Email from: Daryl Spradley November 3 2009

Charles Vivian Spradley, was born in Camden on May 6, 1906 to the parents of Charles Benjamin Spradley and Buelah Viola Stokes. ... Charles Benjamin Spradley....was the son of William James Spradley who was married to Sallie Catherine Stokes Myers. ..... My family records indicate that she passed on February 22, 1920. Within the same entry in reference to the obituary of William Spradley, someone raised the question of whether it applied to William Spradley or his father......

William James Spradley (born January 4, 1839, died May 18, 1923) was indeed the father of Charles Benjamin Spradley (born November 28, 1876, died May 1942). The exact day of May is unknown to me.

J.B. Spradley was William James Spradley's father. His full name was John Bryant Spradley (born November 25, 1819, unknown death date). My records are based on conversations with my father before be passed at 93 as well as the family bible and several trips to the Mt. Zion cemetery over the years. My father's family left Camden when he was a teenager and moved to Miami, FL. Probably in the 1920s. During the last decade of his life, he returned to Camden and purchased a home near the Colonial Cup track.

Can you help identify this family?

Anna Meyers, daughter of THOMAS Meyers and EDITH (--?--)

"Annie Myers was born August 1840 in South Carolina and died March 17, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents, Thomas and Edith, are listed on her death record. She married George F. Devine born about 1818 in England and died 14 Mar 1883 in Saint John, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. George lived in Camden South Carolina until about 1860 at which time he gave Power of Attorney to Washington Meyers to dispose of his South Carolina property.

The following is from an email sent to me by Rob Rathbun, great grandson of Estelle F. Devine on February 28, 2011. Please email either Rob or myself if you can help.

"Census records indicates his birth country as both Ireland and England. He did marry first Harriet Augusta Shartland, the daughter of Isaac Shartland, a native of Bath, County Somerset, England. Harriet died May 17, 1854 in Glenn Springs, South Carolina living a daughter, Emma Charlotte. His daughter, Emma C. Devine died in Boston, Massachusetts on January 16, 1933 at the age of 80. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery. "

"George F. DeVine of Camden, South Carolina purchased Lot 33, 24, 34, 40 and 41 on January 4, 1855. In 1860, George was listed as a planter while living in Kershaw District, South Carolina. On July 2, 1861 George made Washington Myers his power of attorney to pay off debts and dispose of property in Camden. It appears they ( George and Anna Meyers) moved to Florida shortly after this. "

"His granddaughter, Estelle Masters Rathbun, told stories of her grandfather to me in the late 1970's In summing them up, "George had a plantation and slaves during the civil War in Florida. He was outspoken against the abuses towards slaves and was jailed for these views. He left Florida and moved the family to New Brunswick, Canada. He played the viola and piano. "

"He is first seen in the City Directory of Saint John listed as a professor of music, music publisher and dealer. His place of business was 82 Prince Williams Street while his residence was on Celebration Street in Portland, North Saint John. By 1878 he was listed as a music dealer at 95 Germain Street. He was listed as a music teacher in 1881. With him in 1881 were his wife, Anna; his daughters, Emma age 22 and Estelle F. age 16. He was a professor in St. John and was a member of the Masons. He was connected with the Trinity Church and the Mechanics Institute. He was a member of the Church of England. It appears he was buried in a lot owned jointed by Thomas Reynolds (purchased August 3, 1878) and Emeline Steel, widow (purchased October 23, 1878)." "Anna was left $1400 in George's will. "

From her death certificate and death record I have Annie Myers born August 1840 in South Carolina and died March 17, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents, Thomas and Edith, are listed on her death record. South Carolina is given as birth state. She died at home at 275 Shawmut Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts."

In the 1910 census of Boston, she lists the birthplace of her father as Germany and her mother as North Carolina. She is working as a machine hand at a local factory. She and Emma, her step-daughter, are lodging together at a boarding home on Cambridge Avenue in Boston. She was a machine hand for underwear garments. In 1920 she was working as a stretcher for a children's garments. "
