Analysis

The Deduced Ancestral Haplotype represented here is that of Edward Tupper McLeod, son of Norman MacLeod/McLeod (Scotland to Va to Gallia County Ohio). In order to determine the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of Norman, it would be necessary to test descendants of his other sons and triangulate the results.

Markers 1 - 25 Genetic Distance of 1 (0 to our family)

DYS 459b = 10: This marker toggled between "10" and "11" in the earliest days of the ACMS Project but stabilized to "11" in the year 2008. The "age" of this mutation in the descendants of Norman MacLeod pre-dates his estimated birth year of 1775 (our family the mutation appears to predate 1783).

Markers 26 - 37 Genetic Distance of 3 (2 to our family)

CDY = 37/38: This is considered a "volatile" marker in the project with many kits missing the combination of 37/37 that is carried by the majority of the related kits. Convergent or "parallel" mutations are seen within known families; upgrading the first kit to 37 markers would define the "age" of the "38" at CDYb. If both members of this family have "38" it pre-dates Norman MacLeod - if the other kit has "37" it took place in a generation since their MRCA b. 1815 in Ohio (see Genealogy below).

DYS 442 = 11: An "11" is seen in only one other Kit in the project (115676/WDZGN Harris) and based upon other information can be considered a convergent or "parallel" mutation and not an indication of branching; upgrading the first kit to 37 markers would define the "age" of the "11" at DYS 442. If both members of this family have "11" it pre-dates Norman MacLeod - if the other kit has "12" it took place in a generation since their MRCA b. 1815 in Ohio (see Genealogy below).

Markers 38-67 Genetic Distance of 5 (4 to our family)

DYS 425 - 13: This is a Unique Mutation Event not seen in any other Kit in the related group; upgrading the first kit to 67 markers would define the "age" of the "13" at DYS 425. If both members of this family have "13" it pre-dates Norman MacLeod - if the other kit has "12" it took place in a generation since their MRCA b. 1815 in Ohio (see Genealogy below).

DYS 446 = 16: This is a significant marker in the MacLeod Project Haplotype as it differs from the modal allele in P312 and R-L165. One other kit in the Related Group also has the "16" here. That kit (36758 - Colbost) is a 67-2 from our family and a 67-4 (DYS 459b=11) from this family; upgrading the first kit to 67 markers would define the "age" of the "16" at DYS 446. If both members of this family have "16" it pre-dates Norman MacLeod - if the other kit has "15" it took place in a generation since their MRCA b. 1815 in Ohio (see Genealogy below).

Genealogy and Research

Norman McLeod of Gallia, Ohio was born Before 1775 in Scotland. He died Bet. 1820 and 1830 in Perry Township, Gallia County, Ohio United States of America. He was probably married to Mary Ann Humphries b. abt. 1769 in either Augusta County Virginia or the newly formed Botetourt Co. Virginia (formed from Augusta County in 1770), British Colony. The Mary Ann he was married to died after 1850 in Marshall County Kentucky (1850 Census Place Kentucky, Marshall Co., District 1 Page 471 Census Year 1850, , William Thornton 48 M farmer $200 b. Va. Augusta County Virginia Records 1790 - 1800 - Norman McCloud (likely formed from the 1787 tax records used to create the 1790 Census)

The Norman McLeod in Augusta County is likely to be the Norman McLeod who married Mary Ann Humphries, daughter of Uriah Humphries who is also found in Augusta County Records {Augusta Co., Judgments, OS 2, NS1 Uriah Humphries vs. Hollingsworth, Johnston & Co.}

Botetourt County Virginia was established in 1770 from Augusta and Rockbridge counties. Mary Ann McCloud/McLeod was born cr. 1769 in Virginia according to the 1850 Marshall County Kentucky Census (see above) - therefore, she may have been born in either Augusta County or Botentorte County.....most records of her father state Botentorte County even those which predate the formation of a county by that name. Records for Uriah Humphries and Norman McCloud may be found in both counties. From 1771 - 1792, Uriah's name appears on "almost every page" of the Botetourt County Order Book and he held a variety of county positions (Surveyor, Overseer of the Road, and Deputy Sheriff).[JosHumphries.FTW]

Clarke County, GA By 1805, Uriah and his second wife Nancy had moved to Georgia. Uriah wrote his will on July 26, 1816 in Clarke County, GA where it is filed in Will Book A, pp. 83-88).

Clarke Co., GA. Court House Records...Will Book-A Humphries, Uriah (father of Mary Ann Humphires McLeod) Last Will and Testament dated July 26, 1816. Caveat overruled and will admitted to probate March 21,1818. States that his three daughters Leddy, Polly and Mariah, have already been provided for. Bequeaths to wife Nancy, and son Joseph, dau. Patsy, son Elijah, son Presley, son Mattison, and dau. Julia Ann Humphries. He states "I have had a number of children by another woman in Va. before I came to GA.; all have been provided for, but they will probably try to claim a portion of my estate. Their names are

Mary Ann McLeod, Betsy Tigner Henderson, Nancy Kimberling, Judy Lane, George Washington Humphries,Uriah Humphries.

Humphries, James Kimberling, and Nancy, his wife, and Alexander Henderson and Betsy, his wife and Norman McCloud and Marion his wife, Heirs of Uriah Humphries, late of said county deceased devers good causes us thereunto moving have constituted and appoint and by these presents do constitute and appoint George Swain, Jr. our true Attorney-- heir claim tract of land 800 acres in Jackson Co., on Beach Creek. Land in Clarke on Turkey Creek purchased by Uriah of Ignatus Few. Tract of land on Sandy Creek, partly in Jackson and partly in Franklin 700 acres. Land at Gum Spring- Clarke Co., and all others in GA., which Uriah had at the time of his death.

Gallia County Ohio {Gallipolis Twp Ohio}

A Norman McLeod appears as Normand McCloud in the 1800 according to at least 2 sources, yet neither appears to have actually seen the record. The first verified census record is in Gallia County Ohio in 1820, but he appears in tax and other records of that county in 1806, 1810 & 1814 and through 1818. Census and other records of his children reveal the following:

Colin McLeod b. Dec 29, 1789 Virginia; Mary McLeod b. Jan 16, 1792 Virginia; Jane McLeod born May 30, 1794 Virginia still living in Virginia in 1850 married to Adam Griffith - they married bef 1822; Diana McLeod who was born Dec 30, 1796 Virginia Norman McLeod Jr. stated in the 1850 Census that he was born in Ohio; he gave his age as 51 (birth year 1798/79)- his birth date is given by descendants as Mar 28, 1799 in Ohio. From this point on all children are shown as being born in Ohio. It is obvious that born either in Va. or Ohio, he (Norman Jr.) was an infant during the earliest days of the family's residence in Ohio.

It is entirely possible that Norman McLeod (Sr.) would be shown in records of both his former county and state of residence and a current one for the same year. Two possibilities exist - he still owned property in the State of Virginia on which he paid taxes and/or enumeration in Virginia took place earlier than enumeration in the State of Ohio. We have in our own family an enumeration for one Jesse L. McLeod in both Charleston and in Sumter in the year 1920. Although the presence of a Norman McLeod in 1800 Augusta County Virginia and also in 1800 Gallia County Ohio could indicate two Norman's - both of whom may have been married to women named Mary Ann - should give reason for caution until further evidence is found, it is not enough evidence to definitively state that they were two separate men.

Mary McLeod b. 16 Jan 1792 was the third child and 1st daughter of Norman McLeod and Mary Ann Humphries. I've roughly calculated Norman as being born before 1770 because according to direct family lore Norman and two brothers jumped ship and swan ashore towards the end of the Rev. War. Norman would have to have been old enough and strong enough to swim ashore from a ship off the coast. I have Mary married Nehemiah Knox on 19 May 1813. I have nothing else on Mary or Nehemiah. He conceivably died, and she then married Abram Cline.

I have the cemetery books of four Gallia County townships and found no Nehemiah Knox or Abram Cline in them.

It's unknown where or when Norman b. bef 1760 died. Mary Ann appears in the 1850 Marshal Co. KY census living in her daughter's home, Elizabeth Thornton. Feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]. Bob Wallace

They are a perfect 25/25 marker match to each other. Edward was named after Edward White Tupper, A Brigd. General in the Ohio Volunteers who served under General Harris in the War of 1812. Edward Tupper died 1823 in Gallipolis, Gallia County Ohio, the son of Bridg. General Benjamin Tupper and Hulda White. Benjamin Tupper was a Bridg. General in the Revolutionary War and died 1792 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.

It is a mystery why Norman named his son after Edward Tupper (if Norman was a sailor from the Oxford, forced to muster into the Virginia militia, it may be that he served under the General- LMW) . Information from Sandy Fowler Edwards.

"Family tradition is that Norman McLeod came from the Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland to the Sussex Co. "There was indeed a Mary Ann Humphries, daughter of Uriah, who married a Norman McLeod. She was from Botetourt Co., VA. My Norman McLeod was married to a Mary Ann , born in VA. British Transport Ship "The Oxford" - Immigration Legend

A letter exists in which a descendant states that this Norman MAY have come over on the British Transport Ship "The Oxford". This ship was captured by the American Revolutionary Forces in 1776 and all seaman/passengers were apparently taken captive and later dispursed throughout Virginia.

UPDATE February 2009 - THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM MCCLOUD (1759-1820) OF SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA AND : "THE HIGHLAND PRISONERS. Journal of Committee of Safety June 5, 1776-July 5, 1776; Monday the 24th of June 1776." In Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, vol. 5:1 (July 1923), pp. 59-63. Page: 62. Apparently, this ship carried the 42 Highland Regiment/Urquhart The 42 Highland regiment which left Greenwich, Scotland on May 1,1776. The ship Oxford was seized Monday the 24th of June 1776

**The printing of the document was off centered/columned but it appears that Winchestor was/is a Town in Frederick County but was separated from that county in the detailed listing of counties. This separation appears to be because the men sent to the Town were of ranking in the British military and were to held as POW's whereas the remainder of the men were to be used in the militia of the county to which they were sent.

The following was found regarding Winchester on Wikipedia:

"During the Revolutionary War, the Virginia House of Burgesses chose local resident and French and Indian War veteran Daniel Morgan to raise a company of militia to support General George Washington's efforts during the Siege of Boston. The 96 men of "Morgan's Sharpshooters", led by Morgan, assembled in Winchester on 14 July 1775 and marched to Boston in 21 days. Morgan, Wood, and others also performed various duties in holding captured prisoners of war, ...... "

Although at least one file on this Norman McLeod states that Aeneus, William and Norman McLeod, all sent to Winchester, were brothers, there appears nothing in the Journal of committee fo Safety record to indicate this. Further, it appears that unlike the other McLeods captured, these three men were held for the duration of the War as POW's in Wichester and possibly in Shepherdstown.

According to Historic Shepherdstown, Woods, on the 21st of February 1781 wrote to Gov. Jefferson that he was unable to feed all the POW's and some were sent to Shepherdstown in Berkeley County (Murdock and John McLeod were sent to that County in 1776) - this book also states that a Bush Farm in Winchester was where many of the POW's were held.

The fact that these three men held rank in the British military indicates they were of some position in Scotland, perhaps related to the MacLeod as one family legend has remembered Norman. YDNA has shown that both our Angus and this Norman are related within genealogically relevant time frames to the MacLeods of Talisker (cr 1559) and the MacLeods of Raasay (pre 1400 according to both YDNA results and Clan History).

NOTE: June 15th 2016 - It has been brought to my attention that Norman MacLeod of MacLeod was also captured by the Americans in the Revolutionary War (and taken to General Washington where he and his wife were reportedly "well treated"). This prompted some additional research which revealed the following: The 23rd Chief  - Norman MacLeod of MacLeod -  purchased a Captaincy in a Company of the 71st Regiment of Foot, Fraser's Highlanders.  Although that regiment was combined with the 42nd Highlanders (captured aboard the Oxford), they were apparently combined AFTER arrival in America.  The fleet that carried the 71st Regiment of Foot included six ships:  Crawford, Mayflower, Anne, George, Annabella, Mermaid - the Oxford was not part of the fleet. The Oxford carried the 42nd Highlanders - so unless Norman, MacLeod of MacLeod and his wife were on the Oxford with another Regiment, we are discussing two separate Norman MacLeods....one a Cadet aboard the Oxford and one the 22nd (or 23rd?) What happened to these three men after the war? Were they allowed to remain in America or were they returned to their homeland? Did Norman remain while Angus returned to marry and then immigrate sometime between 1783 and 1790?

It was previously speculated that Angus MacLeod of the 1820 Sumter District South Carolina Census was possibly the Angus of "The Oxford" - however, research has revealed the following:

It appears that there is some substantial evidence that he was the Cadet Aeneus MacLeod who was captured aboard "The Oxford"; however, it remains unclear as to what that evidence is - the Cadets were sent to Winchester Town in Frederick County and apparently held there for the duration of the War. Whether Norman of Gallia County Ohio is the Norman of "The Oxford" is still to be determined. LMW

THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM MCCLOUD (1759-1820) OF SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA indicates that it is believed that the William who was captured and sent to Winchester may have remained in the county of Frederick as a William McLeod is found there in the 1787 Tax Rolls which served as the first census for the new country.

However, there was a William McLeod also found in Richmond County and one (of whom the book is written) found Spotsylvania County records for that year. A William McCloud was found earlier in 1783 Amherst County Records.

1790 - An Anquish McLeod paid taxes on two hogs in the Lexinton Parrish. No tithables (free males over 16/slaves of any age or gender) - Apparently referenced in the "Highland Prisoners" article of the Highlander Magazine of July/August 1984 as THE Angus of the Oxford and a POW held at Wincester. Whether this was proven with documentation or just conjecture is unknown.

Possibly the Sergt. Norman McLeod captured aboard the Oxford and held as a POW in Winchester Town Fredrick County Va as a POW for the duration of the Revolutionary War.

The Norman McLeod in Augusta County is likely to be the Norman McLeod who married (by 1787) Mary Ann Humphries, daughter of Uriah Humphries who is also found in Augusta County Records {Augusta Co., Judgements, OS 2, NS1 Uriah Humphries vs. Hollingsworth, Johnston & Co.}

Note: Botentorte County where records are also found for Uriah Humphries and where Mary Ann was supposedly born was formed from Augusta County in 1770 - which may explain why records are found in both counties until Norman moved to Ohio.

A Torkal/Torkil McLeod purchased land on August 21 1751 - designated as McLeod of Essex - he died cr. March 17 1752 - he left a daughter Ann b. in 1742 who married William Marshall.

Winchester Town - Cadet Angus McLeod and Sergts. William and Norman McLeod of the captured British Transport "Oxford" were sent here in 1776 to be held as Prisoners of War until such time as they were given release. No information about that release has been found as of February 2009 - they may have been released to stay or go as they pleased, or may have been forced to return to their home country.

1782-1799 - William McLeod (William McCloud)

This William may have been the William of the Oxford - an Anguish McLeod is found in Amherst County records beginning in 1790 (see above) and a Norman McLeod is found in Augusta County records in 1790 (probably from the 1787 tax records used to form a 1790 Census).

The Norman McLeod in Augusta County is likely to be the Norman McLeod who married Mary Ann Humphries, daughter of Uriah Humphries who is also found in Augusta County Records.

Note: "Yohogania, Monongalia, and Ohio Counties were created in 1776 from the District of West Augusta, the western territory of Augusta County, VA that was treated like a separate county. West Augusta was administered from Fort Dunmore, Virginia'a name for what is now Pittsburgh, beginning in 1775. The northern portion of Monongalia County, the northeastern portion of Ohio County, and and all of Yohogania County were also known as Westmoreland County, PA which was a mother to several counties. The area that was the northwest corner of Monongalia became Washington County, PA in 1781, and most of that became Greene County, PA in 1796. The area that was the northeast corner of Monongalia became the southern portion of Fayette County, PA in 1783. "

James McLeod (h/o Fannie) wrote his will on April 9 1785. His widow married the widower of his sister Francis (see marriages below)
