Arthur Behrends gave me this information on this family:
He came to America in 1852, and after working for a year for a man
in Fredericksburg, he sent for his parents and Fiance, Elizabeth Kiehne.
They arrived in 1853 and
Christian and Elizabeth were soon married.
Christian also had a half-brother, Frederick Behrends, who was killed in the Civil War in Neaser Canion, and a half-sister Charlotte, who married a Koennecke.
Christian and Elizabeth settled near Palta near Sandy in Gillespie County,
where their five children were born. Later they moved to Fort MacCavit
where he cared for stage coaches, horses,
and gardened. His wife took care of a small store for the army, and
he had to go on scout expeditions for Indians. He scouted along the San
Saba River and on the Shot Burn Crossing. Later
they moved to Cafe Spring on the San Saba River, where they farmed
a small farm, gardened, milked and made the yellow cheese, which they sometimes
sold to a nearby army camp. They r
aised wheat, which was cut with a scythe, and a cradle tied by hand
and thrashed with a club. It was ground on a small mill or sometimes taken
to Guenther Flour Mill. Their meat consisted of
wild turkey and deer ham.
Times were hard during the Civil War. Clothes were not to be had, so
having a few sheep, the wool was spun and knit into shirts and jackets.
Men's clothes were made out of buckskin.
There was no school in those days, and only they taught children a
little at home.
The moved to Luckenbach in 1869, located near Fredericksburg, They spent the rest of their lives farming and ranching there.
Mrs. Behrends died in the year 1880in July at the age of 54 and was laid to rest in the family plot near hme. He lived until September 1912, to the age of 91 1/2 and was laid near his wife.
Christian Behrends and wife Elizabeth workd diligently to make a living
for their children in those trying times. He made his own molasses mill
out of timber, but it was a slow process as juice
had to be boiled in a kettle over an open fire. Soap was made by placing
the wood ashes in an ashhopper and covering it with water. This was dripped
for lye, and animal fat was added and
made into soap for the family laundry.
But on Crhistmas there always was a Christmas tree for the children.
It was a cedar tree placed in a box full of pecans, a Tring was placed
in warm beewax and formed into a candle and
bent around the tree limb and trimed with cookies of different kinds
and shape for the children, wo were very happy with the beautiful tree.
In Comfort, Texas, the "True der Union" Monument was erect to Union
Soldiers killed in the Nueces Massacre. THis the only such monument below
the Mason and Dixon line.
Among those listed on the monument is Christian's brother Frederick.

Hohenbergers Store or the Lower South Grape Creek School.
He was married to Amelia ENDERLIN (daughter of Karl ENDERLIN and Louise
