           "Moved to Arkansas in 1841. With his wife, and their infant
          daughter, and
          in company with the family of his father-in-law, Hiram Fincher,
          traveled on
          a flat-boat down the Nolichucky, Tennessee, Ohio and


          Mississippi Rivers,
          and up the Arkansas River to the town of Ozark, then overland
          across the
          Boston Mountains to Washington County.
          
           "On the way, both Mrs. Bell and her infant daughter became ill
          with
          pneumonia.  When the group reached the junction of the
          Mississippi and
          Arkansas Rivers, Luther Bell took his wife and daughter ashore
          to receive
          medical attention and rest, and the other members of the group
          continued on
          their way to their new home in Washington County. Both Mrs.
          Bell, and her
          daughter died, and both were buried in a small village in
          Mississippi.
          Afterward, Luther Bell continued his Journey,  joining the
          Fincher family
          in Washington County, near Maguire's Store. This was in the
          year 1841. He
          married Mary Benbrook within the next three years.  They had
          thirteen

          He married Mirian FINCHER on 11 Apr 1840 in Greene County,
          Tennessee.  Mirian FINCHER was born in 1824 in Kentucky OR
          Tennessee.  Died about 1841 in Arkansas.

          Ewing Benbrook:  1819-1883 started to Washington County,
          Arkansas circa
          1830 from Simpson County, Kentucky with his parents, Nathan and
          Sara
          Maguire Benbrook, (who were married 1816 in Sumner County,
          Tennessee by
          Rev. John Benbrook): a sister, two brothers, and an orphan
          cousin, Mary
          Benbrook, who lived with them.  The caravan stopped awhile in
          Illinois
          and in St. Charles County, Missouri, where their son, John
          Quincy, was
          born July 17, 1833.  They were in Arkansas before 1836.
          
          After visiting with Sarah's parents, Owen and Mary Maguire, of
          Maguire's
          Store, they returned to the big spring where they had chosen to
          build
          their new home.  They homesteaded 40 acres of land just above
          the
          spring  (Johnson's fish hatchery now).
          


          Our old ancestors said Nathan was free-hearted and "lost his
          considerable wealth going security for friends".  He was also
          in poor
          health, but his son Ewing, a serious lad of 16, taking a lesson
          from his
          Maguire's Store uncles, Hosey and Green Maguire, put his
          shoulder to the
          wheel and helped his father build a nice log house.  The house
          was still
          standing in he 1940's when I visited in it, but is now gone.
          
          Ewing then drifted back and forth between his Johnson home and
          Maguire
          Town, working for area farmers for 50 cents per day, finally
          homesteading 80 acres in the Harris community.  With a plow and
          half
          interest in a horse he began farming for himself.  He built a
          log cabin
          and married thrifty, industrious Mahala Fincher of Strain on
          February
          12, 1846.  She was born September 12, 1824 in Tennessee - died
          March 12,
          1875.  She was the daughter of Hiram and Harriet Haney Fincher
          who was
          buried in Strain Cemetery.  On November 8th of the same year,
          their
          first of eleven children was born, Hosey Maguire Benbrook.  
          Soon after,
          when Ewing was 27 and Mahala 23, they started their prot‚g‚?
          Family of
          the same number, for Ewing and Mahala would never turn down any
          member
          of their families who needed help.  Nathan and Sarah had
          trouble (no
          descendants now know what kind of trouble) and Ewing brought
          his mother
          and all the children to live with him and Mahala.
          
          Incidentally, the prot‚g‚ orphan cousin, Mary Benbrook, became
          the
          second wife of the noted Presbyterian preacher, Rev. Luther
          Bell.
          Melvin Clark of Wichita, Kansas, a Benbrook genealogist, is a
          descendant
          of Mary.  Rev. Bell had come to Washington County with the
          Finchers,
          having been married first to their daughter, Elizabeth (a
          sister of
          Ewing's wife, Mahala.
          
          Elizabeth and her infant child had died enroute from Green
          County,
          Tennessee to Arkansas.  A little town sprung up there and they
          named it
          Elizabeth in her memory.  A few years passed and a "Mrs
          Benbrook", from
          the Johnson-Spring Valley area, wrote for Ewing to come and get
          her


          children, Mary and William (Will) Benbrook, that she was dying
          of
          consumption.  From a marker in the Spring-Valley Cemetery, it
          is
          believed her name was Martha Frost Benbrook, the second wife of
          Nathan.
          Since he was not mentioned in the transaction of he children,
          it is
          believed he was already dead though no marker could be found.  
          Mary died
          in her teens.  Will was killed in the Civil War.  Ewing and
          Mahala's
