Location: 1/4 mile southwest of Isle of Wight on Route #158, thence 1/2 mile west on Route #637, thence 1/4 mile north of highway. 3. Date or Period: About 1786 4. Owners: J.J. Murphy --1891. W.T. Murphy 1891-1920 Willie Murphy 1926-1937 5. Description: See form #3686 attached 6. Historical Significance: This house was moved here from back of the place near a swamp. Mrs. Murphy said that Captain John Murphy in the year 1857, skated from Norfolk to Smithfield on the creek which was frozen over. He was the captain of a boat and as he came home every night, this was the only way he could come. This information is found in the Murphy Family Bible. 7. Art: Photograph 8. No Cellar 1 1/2 stories, frame, gambrel roof, shingles. 2 brick chimneys, 1 on each side Weatherboarding unpainted. Sawed by whipsaw and beaded Plain cornices of wood Windows: 11, 1 pane 12"x28; 15 panes 8"x10"; 4 panes 8"x10" no shutters, three dormers One story porch approximately 5' x 16' Plain plank door entrance unpainted Square columns Interior 4 large rooms, 1 small, ceiling approx. 7' up, 9' down Stairway: open string, square newel and balusters, heart pine, turned rail No cellar Doors: wide, hand made, also four panel. Walls: Plastered, with chair rail, ceiling panelled, rafters showing in one room. No interior cornices Hardware: Iron HL hinges and common hinges. Iron outside locks, some wooden locks. Wide pine flooring. High pine mantels, painted. Dining room and kitchen built in 1919 on back. Two rooms added on side 100 years ago. One window cut in old part. Present condition fair and not spoiled by remodeling. Occupant seems to appreciate old architechural features. Florence Jordan.
