Location: 3.82 miles southeast of Isle of Wight Court House, on Route #637, thence 0.7 mile south on Route #600, thence 0.6 mile east on Route #605, thence 100 yards south of Route #605. 3. Date: 1760 (date on chimney) [front part is older] 4. Owners: Murphy Henry Murphy 1866. Mrs. Henry Murphy (widow) 1896. Mary Murphy Cofield 1919. H.P. Cofield 1937. 5. Description: This is a small frame house, of a story and a half, located in a grove of elm trees. It has nine windows with different numbers of panes. It is three steps from the ground and the front porch is six by twenty- one feet, a smaller front porch, having been done away with. The doors are two panels and hand-made of cypress wood. There are two brick chimneys, one at the back, one on the end. The interior looks old. There are six original rooms, and two rooms that were built on in 1907. The walls are plastered and have a wood chair rail. The flooring is made of heart pine and the mantels of cypress. The timbers were hand hewn and the weatherboarding sawn by whipsaw. 6. Exterior: "L" shaped with Cellar 1 1/2 stories, frame, Gambrel roof of shingles, 2 brick chimneys-one on back, one on side Weatherboarding: cypress sawn by whipsaw put together with wooden pegs. Nails blacksmith nails. Plain wood cornices 9 windows, panes: 4 panes 8" x 10", 15 panes 8" x 10" No shutters, no dormers Originally square front porch, now 6 by 21 feet [in 1937] Entrance: Panels taken out and glass put in at top. 2 panels at bottom Square columns Interior: 8 rooms, 4 small, 4 large; Approx. ceiling height 9' 7 1/2 inches Stairway: open string circular upstair Cellar: two rooms. Store rooms. Front bricked up. Doors: Hand-made five panel doors. Made of heart cypress. Some plank. Walls plastered with wood chair board No interior cornices Iron "H L" hinges, one strap hinge, iron outside locks. Wide heart pine flooring, varying widths. Mantels: High, hand-made of cypress. Misc: Back part put on 1760. Front part is older. Present condition [1937] Fair, not spoiled architechurally by remodeling. Occupant seems to appreciate old architechural features. Florence Jordan.
