[A Case for some of the Murphy Genealogy of Audie Murphy] [Mark A. Murphy, Stephenville, TX, 23 Jan 2003] Having not found any readily available Murphy lines prior to Audie's grandfather, I felt the challenge to test my meager genealogical skills for a brief synopsis of his recent ancestry, supported by evidence given herein. It is a mass of jumbled notes at the moment, but hey, what do you expect in a day and a half? Audie Murphy, b. 1924, Hunt Co. TX, son of Emmitt Berry Murphy and Josie Killian Emmitt B. Murphy, b.1886, Grayson Co. TX, son of George Washington Murphy and Virginia Devore Berry (m. May 12, 1872) George W. Murphy, b. 1852, Bienville Parish LA; d. 1924 Hunt Co. TX (buried in the Etta Lake Cemetery in Dixon), son of Jesse Murphy and Rachel (?) Jesse Murphy, b. 1828, KY, d. abt 1899 Bienville Parish LA; son of John(?), probable brother of John Murphy (b. 1818 LA), m. Rachel (?). Jesse probably moved to LA from KY prior to 1830 as a baby. John Murphy, b. bef. 1790. Only one John Murphy (26-45) fits the pattern, and that is in Shelby Co. KY, 1820 census. Another is close to fitting (Jefferson Co.), but has too many children and too old a wife. Right next to John on the 1820 Shelby KY census are J.B. Murphy (26-45) and Leander Murphy (45+). I speculate that John (b. bef 1790) may be one son of Leander Murphy (b. 1760), Rev. War soldier from around Prince William Co. VA. Need to pursue further with land records in LA & KY. Opinions welcome. =============== Correspondence... from ken_92030@yahoo.com, Ken Stanley Mark, George Murphy lived next door to my gg grandparents John and Ellen Dyches who lived at Dwelling 298. One of their daughters, Rosa T. Dyches married John Beauregard Compton who was Virginia Berry's sister's son Good Luck, Ken. Virginia Devore Berry (twin of Patrick) was the eleventh child of John Berry Sr. and Hannah Devore. She was b. 1855 and d. Aug. 1906 in Hunt County, Texas. She was married May 12, 1872 to George Washington Murphy. He was b. ca. 1852 and d. 1924, he is also buried in the Etta Lake Cemetery in Dixon. They moved to Hunt County about 1890. Went through all Murphy heads of families & single adults (391 total) in 1870 LA census over the age of 35, who would be old enough to have a George W., age 18. You wouldn't believe the number of Patrick, Mary, James & John Murphys from Ireland living in New Orleans in 1870! Most interesting was Ovary Ann Murphy. Even checked black & mulatto (hey, you never know). Now, George W. We know by George W.'s 1920 census that his father Jesse was born in KY, so if Jesse's father was John as listed in the 1830 Claiborne Parish census, then John is 30-40 in 1820. Jesse not born and John Jr. only child is about 6 y.o., wife is 15-20 y.o., no other children, unless one died between 1820 & 1830 which is highly possible. John, Sr could also have had a different wife.
