[Biography of John Calvin Murphey, 1833-1907] [thanks Danny Murphy] John Calvin "Cal" Murphey, born 25 Feb 1833 in District 5 around Hurricane Switch (Glendale), was one of nine children of William B. Murphey and Mary "Polly" Benton. At some point the Murphey family attended the Pleasant Mount church. Cal served the Confederacy as a Corporal, Co F 1st Tennessee Cavalry, later called 6th Wheeler's Tennessee Cavalry. He enlisted 5 Jul 1861 at Camp Lee for a period of 12 mos. He was captured with his brother of the same regiment, Joseph "Joe" Hill Murphey, on 8 Oct 1863 at the Battle of Cornersville. In a letter years later, Joe described the capture. They were running over a hill being pursued by Yankee soldiers. Another of their brothers (unidentified) had been shot and they were carrying him. They had to leave him under a tree to die. "It was the hardest thing I ever had to do", said Joe. Cal, Joe and another brother Edmond "Edd" Thomas Murphey, all spent more than a year at the notorious Rock Island Prison in Illinois, Cal & Joe being apparent charter prisoners there and serving time almost the entire existence of the camp. Cal was paroled at Camp Morton, Indiana & forwarded via Baltimore, Maryland for exchange on 14 Feb 1865. He married Nancy Almeda Caskey, daughter of Robert Caskey & Jane Hill, on 27 Feb 1868. It is not known if she was his first wife. Family legend says that Nancy was a student of Cal's, he being 12 years her senior. Cal was apparently a teacher as early as 1855 in District 5, being on a salary roll for that time. If Nancy was his student, then he probably resumed teaching after the war. In 1875 the Murphey family had apparently had enough of carpetbaggers and post-war tensions in Maury County. Cal, Joe, Edd and all their families packed up and moved by wagon train, apparently led by Joe Crews, to Navarro County, Texas. Cal helped establish Liberty Hill Cumberland Presbytarian Church in Navarro Co. TX where he was a deacon. Also a member of the International Order of OddFellows and attended Confederate Veterans reunions in Texas. Cal died 28 Feb 1907, leaving many children and grandchildren, and is buried in Liberty Hill Cemetery.
