[Record for Hugh le Cran, Mayor of Winchester for the years 1357, 1365 and 1369] [posted 28 Jun 2005] Dear Mr Murphy, Thank you for your enquiry. Here at the Record Office we hold many documents that refer to the Shrievalty, mainly the Quarter Sessions records which contain much information on sheriffs, such as appointments and oaths (Ref: Q21) and County Court books (Ref: Q31/1) however both of these collections begin at a much later date, in the 18th and 19th centuries. I have searched our name card index for Hugh le Crane and found reference to a Hugh le Cran, Mayor of Winchester for the years 1357, 1365 and 1369. This was in a list of Mayors of Winchester that we hold in our library. The only document we have relating to him, however, is a set of 6 photographs of various seals, annotated by A P Whitaker, one being of "Hugh Crane, mayor and merchant, 1390" (Ref: TOP345/2/71) It should be possible for you to purchase a photocopy of this document if you require it, and an application form can be downloaded from our website below. There is a minimum deposit of £5 for overseas orders. I hope this information is helpful and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
