["Daughter of Hubbard pioneer family dies", Hubbard City News, 17 Nov 2002] [Provided by Danny Murphy, transcribed by Mark Murphy, 21 Jul 2003] Mrs. Martha Lee Murphy, age 84, of Hubbard died on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at a Waco hospital. Funeral services are set for Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in Hubbard. Rev. Jerry Irvin will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard. Visitation will be held at her home at 200 N. 6th Street West in Hubbard, where she will lie in state from 2p.m. on Monday November 18, 2002 until Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 12 noon. Mrs. Murphy, a member of one of Hubbard's pioneer families, was born on June 25, 1918 in Hubbard to Robert Coats Haralson and Lois Barrett Haralson. She was a lifelong resident of Hubbard and a graduate of Hubbard High School and also attended Baylor University. Along with her husband, G.R. Murphy, Jr., she was the owner/operator for many years of the Jarvis-Paris-Murphy Company (JPM), and agriculture business, who[sic] main office was in Hillsboro until 1976. JPM currently has offices in Waco, Dawson, and Mart. At the time of her death, she was serving as Vice-President of JPM. Mrs. Murphy was a charter member and board member of the Hubbard Community Affairs Association, which oversees the restoration and operation of the Historic Hubbard High school. She was a lifelong active member of the First United Methodist Church, and was one of the founders of the Lord's Acre in Hubbard, serving as its chairman for the past 25 years. Her family was instrumental in the building of the Haralson Family Life Center, located adjacent to the Hubbard Methodist Church. This center has been a great asset to the community, as it is used for many church and community functions. Many knew the Murphys for their traditional Christmas party, held each year in their home for family and friends. After the death of her husband, G.R., she and her son, Gary, continued the tradition each Christmas season, spanning a period of 49 years. She was a former member of the Hubbard Garden Club and loved Hubbard, where she was considered a very generous person and a true lady. Last year she was honored as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year for 2002 at their annual banquet, sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her husband, G.R. Murphy, Jr. in 1986. Survivors include one son, Gary, and his wife, Chantal Murphy of Hubbard; three granddaughters, Heather and Paul Morris of Hubbard, Holly and R.T. Brown of Bryan, and Christina and Jeff Hancock of Hubbard; four great- grandsons, Gage, Hunter, Seth, and Logan Morris, all of Hubbard. Pallbearers will be Billy Jarvis, Arthur Deiterman, Gerald Freeman, Carl McGee, Wayne Kilgo, Tom Anderson, Doyle Holman, and Thomas Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Weatherby, Conrad Newton, Jr., Paul Allen, James Anderson and Don Prue. The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Hubbard or the Hubbard Community Affairs Association. Wade Funeral Home in Hubbard is in charge of arrangements.
