[Murphree Cemetery, Evant, TX] [Visual survey done 1 May 2001 by Mark Murphy] The cemetery contains only one Murphree with a marked headstone. A conversation with an elderly woman, Mrs. A. Lopez, indicated that there was once a community named Murphree in the area, but the people had all moved to Hamilton, TX many years ago. Mrs. Lopez had several family members buried in Murphree Cemetery. The cemetery is located about 1 mile north of Evant, TX on Hwy 183 and has a large stone entrance facing West. There are around 300 well maintained graves, with the oldest being in the center on the East side. There are many Seales, Sims, Sawyers and Winters around the older area. Also of note is the fact that many headstones face the Eastern fence, even those that abut it, indicating that the entrance may once have been from the East. Three gravestones are transcribed below. ********* Phebe Wife of S.M.
