[Excerpts from "An Alleged First Census of the American People, A Criticism of William M. Clemens Book 'American Marriage Records before 1699' ", by Michael O'Brien, 1930] [excerpted by Mark Murphy 17 Mar 2004] Notes: O'Brien mostly criticizes Clemens work by the non-English omissions in it, and sets out to prove it by including many others found elsewhere in records, mostly Scotch-Irish. MURFY omitted from Clemens' book. John P. Prendergast, "Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland", information secured from the public archives at Dublin & London. From 1652-1655, about 6,400 Irish, mainly from Province of Munster, transported from Ireland to New England. Prendergast states that documents in archives of Dublin Castle show these people shipped from ports of Wexford, Waterford, Cork & Kinsale to London and Bristol, then to colonies. Lingard states that 60,000 Irish transported in 1656 alone. Bruodin (Propugualculum, 1669) stated that in first half of 17th century, over 100,000 Irish transported to West Indies & American plantations. Many originally sent to Barbados & Jamaica, in time removed to mainland and settled permanently in Virginia, Maryland & Carolinas. Many Irish took English names to disguise their origin. p. 21 [Dearman Matthew, aka Dermin Mathue & Diarhuid O'Mahoney] baptised his son Teague, (Irish for Thaddeus), and his daughter, Honor, and in July 1654, he was "fined twenty shillings for entertaining two Irish women (at Boston) contrary to a law of ye town," and when his widow married the second time she took Bryan MURPHY for her husband, and her name was recorded "Margaret Mayhoone" in the entry of the marriage at Boston on July 20, 1661. p. 24 Matthew Colane, whose name sometimes was rendered Collins, appears in Essex County [Mass.] as a "cosin of Dearman Matthew".
