[Confederate Murphys in Rock Island Prison] [from Director, Rock Island Arsenal Museum] The following entries appear in the index to the two-volume general register of prisoners: Name: Murphy J.D. Barracks Number: 11 Register Number: 177 Name: Murphy John T Barracks Number: 33 Register Number: 390 Name: Murphy Joseph B Barracks Number: 33 Register Number: 400 Name: Murphy James Barracks Number: 41 Register Number: 549 Name: Murphy Edwin T* Barracks Number: 54 Register Number: 700 Name: Murphy Thomas Barracks Number: 69 Register Number: 798 Name: Murphy Joseph H* Barracks Number: 48 Register Number: 882 Name: Murphy John* Barracks Number: 48 Register Number: 924 Name: Murphy (illegible initial) S Barracks Number: 75 Register Number: 1041 Name: Murphy Thomas Barracks Number: 77 Register Number: 1179 Entry in register is mostly illegible, but you can read that he was a Missouri conscript. Name: Murphy James Barracks Number: 69 Register Number: 1266 Entry in register is mostly illegible, but you can read that he was with an Arkasas regiment. Unfortunately all but two of these register numbers (the last two) would have been in the first volume of this two-volume set. This first volume did not survive. I checked the exchange roster next and did locate the following entry: page 252 Register Number: illegible Name: Murphy Edwin T Rank: Private Regiment: 48 Tennessee Infantry Company: H Where Captured: Columbia, Tennessee When Captured: September 7, 1863 Sent for Exchange: When: March (illegible) 1865 Where: Point Lookout, Maryland Although this doesn't exactly match the information for Cpl Edmond Thomas Murphey, the regiment information is identical. I did not find an entry for Joseph Hill (James H. or J.H.) Murphey or for John Calvin Murphey in the exchange roster. Portions of the original register are illegible, so that record is not complete.
