Will you allow an outside person, a lady resident of Washington, D.C. to make copies of said applications? ARTHUR MURPHY REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSIONER Gentlemen: I have been referred by the Adjutant General's office to your pension files for the information I desire as he states that his files are not complete and your office would have this information. Please send me as definite and complete data as you have on the Revolutionary war record and also genealogical records you may have in this connection on the life, parentage and children, if any, of Arthur Murphy. On page 78 of the book Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas by Josiah M.[or H.] Shinn, published in 1908, copyrighted by M.C. Shinn, Washington, D.C. the following information is available: "This roll of honor is a government record and is the highest form of evidence. It is the pension roll of revolutionary soldiers alive in Arkansas in the counties named in 1833 and 1834 and will serve as an index to all descendents who may desire to take membership in any of the patriotic orders. The publication of this must not be taken as an exhaustive presentation of all soldiers in Arkansas, the the Revolution. (Then follows a list of soldiers receiving pensions in various counties in Ark. Under Washington County, Ark. "Arthur Murphy, 72 yrs, member N.C. Continental Line" and other names. On page 113 of this same book he is mentioned as a pioneer of Lawrence County, Ark. There are several Arthur Murphys who are Revolutionary war heroes all of whom were in Pennsylvania regiments. The Arthur Murphy I want news of is the one your office paid a pension as a member of the N.C. Continental Line and who was living in Washington County Ark at the time the pension was mailed to him. It is possible that he was living with children and if you have any names or information on the town he lived in Washington County, Ark. I would appreciate it. I have written to N.C. Historical Society and the Adjutant's office. I have also written to the Arkansas Historical Commission at Little Rock. They say they have not the staffs to bother with giving this information. I know if this man was paid a pension by the government there must be a record of his services, otherwise he could not have obtained the pension. He is an ancestor, that I know but I cannot get this information. Please send me any information of any kind that you have on this Arthur Murphy and to save you trouble will state that only the North Carolina Continental Line will do. I certainly shall appreciate your efforts, believe me. Sincerely, Mrs. Ivan S. Cliff [stamped] 11 AGO Jun 16 1939 Received [hand written document] [cover] 27.326 Arthur Murphy Arkansas, Ten t. The record of the only Arthur Murphy, all spellings of the names searched, that is found on the Revolutionary War records of this office is furnished you herein as found in the papers on file in pension claim, S.31872, based upon his military service in that war. Arthur Murphy was born in 1762, in Franklin County, North Carolina, or in Sussex County, Virginia, day, month, and the names of his parents are not known. Arthur Murphy enlisted in 1778, in Bute County, North Carolina, and served five months as private under Captain John Hopkins and Colonel Thomas Eaton. Section[?] shows a Col. T. E., S. Carolina so I put S.C. on jacket too. While a resident of Frankin County, North Carolina, he later enlisted, served three months as private under Captain Joseph Parish and Colonel Harbert Haynes and was in the battle of Guilford. He then enlisted and served two months as private under Captain Mathew Brickel. When forty or forty-five years of age he moved from Franklin County, North Carolina, to Logan County, Kentucky, two years later he moved to near the Red Banks, Henderson County Kentucky, thence to Johnson County, Illinois, and thence to Lawrence County, Arkansas. He also resided for short periods on the frontiers of Missouri. He was allowed pension on his application executed May 21, 1833, at which time he was a resident of Lawrence County, Arkansas, where he had lived six years. [next page] Arthur Murphy died April 6, 1835, place not stated. There are no family data.
