(or T.?), old roll, from Glendale, on wood's roll, Co. K; wounded badly R.R. wreck near Auburn, Ala., in Dec. 1862, arm broken, discharged." "Murphy, James C. [bro of Ed T], on Wood's roll, Co. K." Jr.], old roll, Scribner's Mill."[md Nancy Adaline Adkins] Bottom of p145: "Stephen S. Craig says Aug. 1907: many of the "old 48th" were sick and escaped capture at Fort Donelson. then met at Shelbyville--an even hundred of them--just after and made up a new company--C.C. Harris, Capt., James L. Guest, 1st Lieut., Wm. Lee, 2nd Lieut; Billy Martin, 3rd Lieut; ____Mc Bride (later Wm. B. Wood (surveyor) Ord. Sergt. Organized at Decatur few days later to Corinth, the temporarily [top of p146] attached to the "Little 48th" until at Shelbyville, Tenn., after Ky. campaign. After Col. W. M. Voorhies was exchanged (captured at Fort Donelson) he cmae to shelbyville and took the remnant of this company (of sick, escapes &c) then about 65 or 70 men, back to his "old 48th'." Ben T. Martin says, Aug. 1907: At time of fort donelson fight Co. E (Voorhies 48th Tenn. Inf.) was guarding R.R. bridge over Red River (or Whippoorwill Creek?)) in Ky. and not in fight. Enough of the 'old 48ht" escaped from fort d. and were sick and at home, so that with new recruits they formed four companies, Co. A, Co. B, Co. C, and Co. D. Co. E was practically intact." "Cos. A, B, c, D, and e went to Decatur, Ala., March 1862. Col. Wm Deering's 54th Tenn. Inf. had disgraced themselves; about half of the 54th had "just quit". The balance did not want to be known as the 54th. They wer Co. F, G, H, I, K. (There was no J company)." Gen. A.S. Johnston sent geo. H. Nixon of Lawrence Co. (later chancellor, judge, and builder of R.R. from Mt. Pleasant to Lawrenceburg) to collect these fragments of the "old 48th" and the 54th into a regt. Of this Nixon became Colonel, Thoams R. Hughes of Savannah, Lt. Col. (Roll of Honor, Chickamauga, XXX-2, 542); Joseph T. Younger of Santa Fe, Major; Wm. Montague of Wayne Co., Adjutant; Marion Underwood of Columbia, Sergt. Major, according to Ben Martin's recollection." "Col. W.M. Voorhies was captured Fort Donelson, exchanged with the other prisioners 1862. Shortly after 20 Nov. 1862, Voorhies appeared in camp at Shelbyville, Tenn., and wanted his old companies in his "old 48th" again. He got companies A, B, C, and D., but could not get Co. E, which remained with Geo. Nixon's regt. (which had been made up been made up of Cos. A,B, C, D, and E, and the balance of the 54th.)" "Co. E and the remnant of the 54th was afterwards known as the "Little 48th", neither command wishing to lose that number and refusing to be known as "54th". This was after about 1 Dec. 1862."
