[Rejected Revolutionary War Land Claim of Butler Murphey, 1834] [transcribed by Mark A. Murphy, 27 Jan 2003] Petition for bounty land. The pt of Butler Murphey- Soldr C.L. There is no proof, whatever, fol'd in support of their claim. The widow of this soldier, (who claims his bounty land, and has given a power of attorney to an agent to demand presive[?] the warrant for the same) has given an affidavit, which is fol'd. She says- that "Bulter murphey servd three years, and three months, in the virginia line, in the company of Capt. ______ in the Regt. commanded by Colo. _______ " and the Justice of the Peace, who administered the oath to her, has certified - that she is a person of truth & of good character- Respectfully submitted John H Smith Comr &c June 14th 1834 To Governor Joanwell[?]} Know all men by these presents that I Lidday Murphy widow and relect of Butler Murphey deceased, do hereby authorize and empower Hamon[?] C. Trigg of the county of Montgomery and state of Virginia as my agent and attorney to demand and receive from the Registrar of the Land office of Virginia any and all comments[?] for Military Bounty Land due to me for the services of the said Butler Murphey in the Revolutionary War with power to appoint one or more substitutes under him, with the aforesaid powers, and all the acts of my said agent or of his subsitutes, I will ratify and confirm by these presents: As witneSs my hand and seal this Eighth day of Aprile 1834 Lidday her X mark Murphy {seal} Teste. Capt[?] Lewis State of Virginia Montgomery county wit[?] This day Lidday Murphey above named personally appeared before me as Justice of the peace, and acknowledged the foregoing power of attorney to be her act and deed.
