[Notes from "Diary of Lafayette Rogan, CSA Prisoner of War at Rock Island Prison Barracks 1863-1865", 1938] [exerpted 8 Jun 2006 by Mark A. Murphy] [note: Joseph Hill Murphey was a prisoner Oct 1863 to 1865, barracks 48] Rogan imprisoned at Rock Island December 5, 1863. Released after Lee's surrender. Fri, 1 Jan 1864 "The coldest day I have ever felt. Thermometer 30 below zero." Sun, 3 Jan 1864 "Many fellows have no blankets yet & are very thinly clad. Such men suffer terrible. We sleep by reliefs and fill each bunk heads and tails fashion. I fear that disease and death will be the result of all this suffering. Deaths have already occurred from freezing." Thurs, 12 Jan 1864 "The new Qrs [quarters] are vastly more comfortable than the old." Mon, 1 Feb 1864 "I have fears that small pox will spread amongst us and sweep us from the earth and our friends." 12 Feb 1864 "Judge Grant was over. Those of the prisoners who do not desire to go on exchange send in their names to day. Many will refuse to be exchanged hoping to be paroled. I hope they will get dissapointed and have to remain in prison." Wed, 17 Feb 1864 "More relief for the need Rebels from unknown sources. I fear that many if not all the articles sent fall in to hands which are greedy and clothe many who are unthankful. Many seek contributions who are now deserting our cause."
