Wednesday, April 15.. ***** The Western [Carolinian?] informs us that at present and for some week past there has been no person confined in the jail of Rowan county; and that not a single writ had been returned to the last term of the Superior Court. ***** An act has recently been passed by the legislature of Jamaica, extending to the Jews all the privileges enjoyed by the other white inhabitants. ***** A law has been made in Canton condemning those who open shops to sell opium, to death by strangulation. Those who are caught smoking, to be exposed two months with wooden collars about their necks, after which they are to be sent to the territories, and given to the soldiers as slaves. ***** Homicide.- A sudden encounter took place last Wednesday night (25t ul) near Lumberton, between Meredith Messer and a young man named McDaniel, from Randolph, in which the latter received a stab with a knife in the abdomen, of which he died on Thursday night. Messer has not been taken. The body of McDaniel was carried to Randolph by his uncle, who was with him when the unfortunate occurrence took place. N.C. Journal ***** Distressing Accident.- We are informed by a friend in Robeson county, that Mrs. Harmon[or Hanson] Baggett, of that county, was killed by lightning on the night of the 1st instant. Star ***** DIED, In this county, on Wednesday evening last, Mrs. JANE MURPHY, consort of the Hon. A.D. Murphy, in in[sic] the 49th year of her age. In the vicinity of Washington, on the 21st ult. THOS. W. BLACKLEDGE, esq. attorney at law, for several years a member of our state legislature. At Lumberton, on the 4th instant, suddenly, General ALFRED ROWLAND, in the 53d year of his age, and who some years ago was a representative in the general assembly from Robeson county. ***** WANTED. AS as apprentice to the Boot and Shoemaking business, a lad fifteen or sixteen years of age, of industrious habits. Charles L. Cooley. April 14. 77- ***** Election for Wardens of the Poor. AN Election will be held at the court house in Hillsborough, on Easter Monday (20th April) for the purpose of choosing seven Freeholders to serve as Overseers of the Poor for the three years next ensuing.
