[Excerpt from "The Virginia Journal", 21 Oct 1784] [excerpted 13 Jun 2006, Mark Murphy] RAN away from the Subscriber, on Tuesday the 5th inst. an Irish Servant, named JEREMIAH MURPHY, who was imported into Baltimore, in Maryland, and appears to be 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high; he is pitted with the small-pox, has short brown hair, speaks bad English, and has a disagreeable tone, can neither write or read, and is rather forward and talkative, especially when he is in liquor. -He was in Dumfries on Tuesday morning, and stole some things there the night before, which was the occasion of his going away. - As he may possibly endeavour to hire himself as a sailor, I must forewarn all masters of vessels from employing him, or carrying him out of the country.- I will give for taking him up, and securing him so that I get him again, a fourth part more than what is allowed by law. HUGH STEUART. October 18, 1784.
