Rhode Island was the 13th U.S. state to join the Union:   29-May-1790
The Name:  (provided by "Netstate.com")          
  • Dutch explorer Adrian Block, named it "Roodt Eylandt" meaning "red island" in reference to the red clay that lined the shore.
