Ammen, Durst (1730-1805) - PA, VA - arrived 1749 in Crown

Colonial records show many spellings for this man's name. Surname: AMAH, AMEN, AMON, AMMAN, AMMANN, AMME, AMMEN, AMMON, ANTMANN, EMON, EMMONS. Given name: Durs, Durst, Thirst, Thorst, Torst.

Durst was born 8 Jan 1729/30 at Munchenstein, Roggwill, Switzerland. He sailed for America on the English ship "Crown," landing in Philadelphia on 30 August 1749. Soon after his arrival in Philadelphia, Durst settled in east Cocalico Twp. in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was paying taxes as late as 1780,and was married there to Eve Ranck, daughter of Johann Philip Ranck. East Cocalico is on the northeastern border of the county adjoining Berks. A Swiss record shows that on 17 July 1757, he returned to Switzerland to claim an inheritance (425 Guilden less 10% taxes) for himself and a brother. Durst was a Lutheran and although his wife Eve Ranck became a Dunkard, he refused to do so; Eve may also have been connected to the Presbyterian church. Durst Ammen served in the Revolutionary War in the 3rd Battalion, Lancaster County Militia as a private. (Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 7, Pg. 230.) Following the war in about 1783 or 1784, Durst journeyed through the Shenandoah Valley and acquired land.in Botetourt County, Virginia, settling at Mill Creek; he died there 17 June 1805. Durst and Eve were the parents of nine children. BRERETON-WILLIAMS family tree.

Benedict, Ezra (abt 1763-1817) - CT, VT, Canada

The Benedict families were Quaker and appear in many colonial Quaker records. Ezra was born 15 Apr 1763 at New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut, the son of Jonathan Benedict and Lucy Castle. About 1788, he married Eunice Bull, daughter of Thomas Bull and Martha Smith. Ezra and his brother Joseph both left Vermont after the American Revolution. Some time between 1794 and 1804, Ezra's family went to Canada West (now Ontario)and settled in Leeds County. Ezra's oldest child was Lucy Benedict, born 21 March 1788 (probably in Connecticut.) A later child, my ancestor, Isaac Benedict, born 18 Jan 1794 in Manchester, Vermont; an infant, Rusha, is shown in the 1804 census in Bastard Twp., Leeds, Canada West. The birthplace of Martha, born 28 March 1796, is not known.. Ezra died 8 Jan 1817 at Leeds County, Canada West. Among the 10 children of Ezra and Eunice was my ancestor, Isaac Benedict, who brought his family to Lee County, Iowa, in 1850, with their purpose being to serve as Quaker missionaries.
