DNA test results from participants with both Kinney and McKinney surname variations include representation from multiple ancient ancestors.  These are called haplogroups (R1b, I, etc.) and identify ancient ancestors, thousands of years ago, long before there were surnames.  Within these haplogroups, there are many different haplotypes (the series of  12 or more numbers from the Y-DNA test) representing multiple progenitors.  More than half of the participants have a match (some more relevant than others) and the others are still waiting for a match.  The multiple haplogroups (ancient ancestry), multiple haplotypes (surname progenitors), and percentage of those still waiting for a match, are all typical of most Y-DNA surname projects.  This is a pioneer field and as databases increase over time, the percentage of those with matches will increase.
