My Various Harlan Connections

My Various Harlan Family Connections

I am doing this website a little differently than my other pages. I also have my family tree online at Rootsweb.com on their World Connect pages and since the Harlan family is so large and my connections are so varied, I thought I would provide links to my World Connect pages titled Goffs and Hobbs and Everything in Between. In this way, one can see how the various families intersect.

I am twice a descendant of George HARLAN and Elizabeth DUCK who came to America in 1687. They were Quakers (Society of Friends) and had left England after the end of the Civil War there and settled in County Down for a time. George and Elizabeth brought their four youngest children with them and headed out for an unknown land to make a better world for themselves and their family. From these two people, there are tens of thousands of their descendants in the world today. George's brother Michael also came with him and his descendants probably number about the same as George's.

My mother descends through their daughter Hannah who married Samuel HOLLINGSWORTH (or my Hollingsworth pages "Descendants of Robert Hollingsworth of Hollingworth, Cheshire, England"). Her line from Hannah is:

Hannah HARLAN and Samuel HOLLINGSWORTH
Samuel Hollingsworth and Barbara SHEWIN
Samuel HOLLINGSWORTH and Elizabeth ________
Malona HOLLINGSWORTH and Robert STEEN
Agnes Lucretia STEEN and Vincent Ruso HARRISON
Amanda Owens HARRISON and John Andrew HOLLAND
Mattie Dean HOLLAND and Harmon Allen WADE Sr
Bonnie Moore WADE and Sandy Iddo FISHER, my grandparents

I am the 7th great granddaugther of Hannah Hollingsworth. The above links are to the other webpages I have for those families and most include pictures.

My father descends through George and Elizabeth's second youngest son, James HARLAN. His line from James is:

James HARLAN and Elizabeth ___________
John HARLAN and Martha ASHBY
John HARLAN and Jemima WRIGHT
Aaron HARLAN and Nancy COMBS
Thomas Milton HARLAN (HARLAND)and Hannah BRAY
Elvira Ann HARLAN and Thomas S (or J) DAVIDSON
Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" DAVIDSON and James Thomas GOFF
Dennis Mitchell GOFF and Rosa Maud PAULSELL
Willard Dennis GOFF and Ollie Frances "Frances" BRADBERRY, my grandparents.

I am the 8th great granddaughter of James and Elizabeth Harlan. My mother and father are 8th cousins once removed! The above links are to the other webpages I have for those families and most include pictures.

Here I am listings some of the Harlan "coincidences" in Gary's family and my family:

1. James Thomas GOFF's second wife Axie Marilla "Mary" COOPER was his first wife Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" DAVIDSON's 6th cousin once removed. Mary is the 4th great granddaughter of Michael HARLAND and Dinah DIXON.
2. Gary's 2nd great grand-aunts Mary Ann KELLEY and her sister, Elizabeth KELLEY married my 5th great grand uncles, Reverend George Barton HARLAN and Thomas HARLAN respectively. They are the sons of John HARLAN II and Jemima WRIGHT.
3. My 6th cousin twice removed, Cpt Newell William Davis COUCH married Gary's 3rd cousin once removed, Emma Elizabeth Woods, who is in his BUTLER family.
These are the connections that I am aware of. There may be more, who knows?? It has really been a pleasure learning about my Harlan roots. In the Harlan family, there is a First Lady, Ida Saxton McKINLEY (wife of William McKINLEY, President of the United States of America), two Supreme Court Justices, Justice John Marshall HARLAN and his grandson, Justice John Marshall HARLAN II as well as the pioneers who helped settled the United States from brother George and Michael HARLAN (Harland)to George HARLAN (852)and Elizabeth DUNCAN who helped blaze the trail to California to the Harlans who helped settled the new state of Kentucky and have a county named after Revolutionary War hero, Silas Harlan (215). They are the great names in the Harlan Family but they are only a few compared to the hard working people that comprise this wonderful family lineage.

What I have on the Harlans is by no means the complete picture. I have primarily concentrated on my direct lines but sometimes I veer off when I find something interesting. The History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family by Alpheus Harlan, 1910, has been invaluable as a guide to who's who and the numbers proceeding some of the names are the numbers for those individuals in the book. The Harlan Family in America is a helpful web site for those starting their Harlan research. G. R. Vernon, Heather Harlan, Jim Harlan, John Harlan, Kathy Cardwell, Dorothy Wear, Christopher McKee, Teresa Miller, Joy Salerni, Jack Laswell Sr, Mary Ann Carson Sarrels, Ken Hollingsworth, Margaret Hollingsworth, Susan Wyatt, and a host of other people have been a huge help in piecing my Harlan roots together. Any new information on my direct lines is always appreciated.
