Forward Family of Mere, Wiltshire, England

My 4xgreat grandmother, was Sarah Forward of Mere, Wiltshire. While she married and settled in Kingston Deverill, the Forward line had been well established in the village of Mere for many generations.

Following her husband's death, Sarah migrated to Australia with 4 of her grown children in 1850. For some reason, the family did not obtain passage on the same ship and two of her children and several other members of her extended family died as a result of the journey. The family settled in the Newcastle district of New South Wales. Many of the details regarding Sarah's ancestors were supplied by Mr. Kelly Roundy a fellow Forward descendant of Utah, USA. Details of Sarah's descendants have been provided by many, and they are noted in the References, however I'd especially like to thank Betty Stephens, Ron and June Ball for sharing their research and their encouragement. My direct line of descent is shown in bold typeface.

First Generation

Michael is the earliest Forward ancestor found to date. He married Elizabeth KING, 27 Dec 1682 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND and they had the following children: ⁷

It is not known whether the daughters Sarah and Mary who were baptised and buried on the same dates were twins, although it is possible. It is noted that both these names had been used previously by Michael, and that the first daughter Sarah has a marriage recorded. The accuracy of this information has not been clarified at this time.

While John and Hannah's burials have not been found at this time, it would seem most likely that they were deceased at the time of the 1851 Census, and possibly even the 1841 Census.

Given the popularity of the surname at Mere during the 17th and 18th Centuries, it is surprising that only 6 FOWARD households have been identified in the 1851 Census at Mere, plus a few by this name lodging with other families. A total of 18 people residing at Mere had the surname at this time, a total of 59 for the whole county of Wiltshire. None of those identified appear to be direct descendants of this particular family. ²³

John may be the one aged 65 who appears on the 1851 Census at Mere with daughter, Sarah aged 25 years. ²³

He married Mary DOWN, 28 Feb 1808 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁷.

17. Elizabeth FORWARD. Daughter of John FORWARD & Hannah MILLS. Christen 22 Nov 1786 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

She married William INGS, 13 Apr 1801 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ²³.

At their marriage, Elizabeth was described as a spinster, her husband, William was of the parish of Penn, a sojourner in Mere. ²³

18. James FORWARD. Son of John FORWARD & Hannah MILLS. Christen 14 Nov 1789 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

He married Sarah and they had the following children:

Although it is possible that James' children, Ann and Samuel are twins, it is also possible that one was older at the time of baptism and that the two were infact just baptised on the same day. This is more probable given the 6 year gap between this baptism and that of James' eldest child, Charles.

James does not appear on the 1841 Census at Mere, although his wife and children appear to have been identified.

Sarah may be the head of household aged between 40-45 years at the Causeway, Mere on the 1841 Census. Also in this household appear to be two of her children, Ann, aged 7 and William, aged 5. It would appear, Sarah's other two children, Charles and Samuel were residing at the Workhouse. ¹⁷

Mere had a parish poorhouse from 1638. The two-storey building, situated at the bottom of Steep Street, had four rooms on each floor. It was demolished in 1877. In 1814, Mere became a Gilbert's Union and used a workhouse on the south side of Castle Street. The poor were employed in such tasks as road-mending, silk spinning, and in liming fields. Additional people named Forward living in the Causeway household during the 1841 Census, include Elizabeth aged 4, Fanny aged 20, Hannah aged 15, Jane aged 20, and John aged 25. Of these, only Elizabeth was born in the county. It should be noted that during this census, exact ages were not recorded and were rounded to the nearest 5 years. ¹⁷ The 1851 Census confirms that John then aged 38 was born in Gillingham, Dorset, and that his wife, Fanny aged 29 was born in Foley, Dorset. Their daughter, Elizabeth was now 14 and her birthplace was given as Mere. Neither Hannah nor Jane has been positively identified on the census, and it is likely that they may have moved away or married in this time. ²³ John and Fanny have both been identified on the 1881 Census living at Water St, Chapel Lane at Mere. By this time there were only 5 families remaining in the village of Mere ³⁸.

She married Samuel WRIGHT, 11 Jun 1810 in Donhead, St. Mary, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ²³.

20. Sarah FORWARD. Daughter of John FORWARD & Hannah MILLS. Christen 23 Nov 1794 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁷. Died 1 May 1851 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁵. Buried 2 May 1851 in Christchurch Burial Ground, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALI ⁵. Occupation Farm Servant ⁹. Religion Church Of England.

The Nimrod Index revealed a Bastardy record by Sarah FORWARD spinster against William ALFORD, a labourer, both of Mere in 1816. Also a warrant to arrest father. Ref: WRO/438/50&51. This information has not been further followed up at this time. However, they had the following child:

Sarah then married John BRIMBLE, son of James BRIMBLE & Priscilla MAIDMENT, 26 May 1817 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Christen 27 May 1785 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Died 19 Oct 1844 in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Buried 23 Oct 1844 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Occupation Labourer, Shepherd ⁵. Religion Church of England.

John was baptised as BRAMBLE however both his marriage and death were recorded as BRIMBLE. Sarah's name at their marriage was recorded as FORHEAD.

It is possible that John was apprenticed to John GAISFORD as the following has been extracted from the Varied Index complied by Dr. B. Carter:

1793 Jly 3 John BRIMBLE a county boy, was proposed by the Trustee, Wm. NORTHEY Esq., and apprenticed to John GAISFORD on 1 Dec 1794, for 10 pound.

The Goody and Baddy Index revealed two occasions where John appeared in Quarter Session records:

31 March 1818 For a limited time

John Brimble aged 32

Committed by W. Temple Esq. for the space of three months, he having been convicted of an offence against the game laws.

Warrant dated 31 Jan 1818.

By this time John was married with both a wife and young child to support.

Devizes Bridewell

William Brimble aged 13

Committed by W. Heylar, jun, Esq. charged on the oath of John Brimble of Kingston Deverill, with having feloniously stolen a knife, and some bread and cheese, from a house of the said John Brimble, his property.

Warrant dated 8 July 1817.

Guilty. To be privately whipt at the rising of the court and discharged.

This event took place shortly after John's marriage to Sarah. William was infact his second cousin and was later transported for other offences.

John and Sarah had the following children:

All their children, with the exception of Andrew and Sophia appear to be named after John's siblings.

John and his family appeared on the 1841 Census at Kingston Deverill, which was taken on 10 April. At the time there were 420 residents in the village of Kingston Deverill. John was described as an Agricultural Labourer and aged 56 years. Also listed in the family home were his wife Sarah, aged 44 yrs, his sons, Jonathon, aged 15 yrs and Andrew aged 11 yrs, both described as Agricultural labourers. Also living in the home were three of his daughters, Sophia, aged 9 yrs, Isabella, aged 6 yrs and Caroline, aged 18 yrs.

John was 59 years of age when he died however the cause of death is not known at this time.

Sarah migrated to Australia with her son, Jonathon and daughter, Isabella on the 'Lord Stanley'. The ship departed from Plymouth on 4 May 1850 and arrived in Sydney on 27 Aug 1850. Details on shipping indents for Sarah are as follows:

BRIMBLE, Sarah, 56 yrs, born Mere, Wiltshire. Parents John and Hannah Forward (this was difficult to read and was initially thought to be Foley), both dead. Widow on embarkation. Chur of England. Could not read/write. Son Andrew on board 'Emigrant' arr. Moreton Bay. In good health, no complaints. Paid 11 pounds passage.

The following article detailing the voyage appeared in the 'Sydney Morning Herald' of 27 August 1850:

The Lord Stanley has had a passage of 114 days from Plymouht. She brings 309 English and Irish immigrants. There were five births and four deaths on the passage, viz two infants, one child five years old and a married woman. On the 2 June , in latitude 6-15 north and longitude 23-25 west she spoke the Alert, barque, hence for London, which vessel reported having experienced very bad weather off Cape Horn, and also having lost two seamen, one by falling from the mainyard on deck, where he was killed on the spot; the other seaman fell from off the spanker boom overboard, and was drowned. The Emily, for Sydney with immigrants, was to leave Plymouth about the 10 May. The emigrants by the Lord Stanley consist of 50 married couples, 86 single men, 44 single women and 79 children under fourteen years of age.

Sarah and John's other children, Andrew (and his family) and Sophia also migrated the same year on the board the Emigrant, however their ill fated voyage was one of much suffering and is detailed later.

Sarah died at 58 years of age, 12 months after the family's arrival in Australia. She is buried at Christchurch Burial Ground, Newcastle. ⁵

22. Ann FORWARD. Son of John FORWARD & Hannah MILLS. Christen 24 Aug 1800 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

She married James READ, 7 Apr 1828 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ²³.

There are a number of Ann Read's listed on the 1881 Census, however, only one born in Mere - but she was born c1807. She was residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Joshua Jukes. Further research is needed to clarify if this is the same Ann. ³⁸

Sixth Generation

23. Charles FORWARD. Son of James FORWARD & Sarah. Christen 29 Nov 1827 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Died 14 Jan 1919 in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, WALES ⁸³. Buried Jan 1919 in Varteg, Monmouthshire, WALES ⁸³.

Charles may the the 12 year old listed at the Workhouse on the 1841 Census.

Charles married Elizabeth MORGAN, daughter of James MORGAN & Lititia JOMES, 18 Sep 1857. Born 7 Feb 1840 in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, WALES ⁸³. Died 15 Dec 1927 in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, WALES ⁸³.

Charles and his family have been identified on the 1881 Census living in Llanover, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was a labourer, aged 50, born in Wiltshire. His wife, Elizabeth aged 40 years was born Pontnewynydd. Also living with them were their children, William, a 22 year old Collier, born Abersychan. James, a 17 year old Collier, Lettey a 14 year old scholar, Samuel aged 8 born in Cwmavon, Annie aged 5 and Gertrude aged 3, also born in Cwmavon. Also living in the family home was 22-year-old boarder, Louisa Taylor who was born in Nailsea, Somerset. ³⁸

Ann, aged 7 years, appears to have been residing with her mother at the Causeway, Mere at the time of the 1841 Census.

Samuel may be the 8-year-old listed at the Workhouse at the time of the 1841 Census.

Samuel may also be the widowed, pauper inmate of the Devizes Union Workhouse at the time of the 1881 Census. Samuel's age was 47, but his birthplace given as Cuckleton, Somerset. He was an Agricultural Labourer. ³⁸

26. William FORWARD. Son of James FORWARD & Sarah. Christen 5 Apr 1836 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

William is likely to be the 5-year-old residing at the Causeway with Sarah as head on the 1841 Census.

27. Mary FORWARD. Daughter of William ALFORD & Sarah FORWARD. Christen 7 Jul 1816 in Mere, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁷.

No further reference to this child has been found to date.

28. James Maidment BRIMBLE. Son of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 12 Oct 1817 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

No further record of James can be found in Parish Registers. It is not known if he died as a child or whether he reached adulthood and perhaps moved away from Kingston Deverill. He did not appear on the 1841 Census in the home of his parents at Kingston Deverill, although he would have been 24 years of age at the time and quite possibly settled elsewhere.

29. Harriett BRIMBLE. Daughter of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 23 May 1820 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

No further record of Harriett can be found in the Kingston Deverill Parish Registers. It is not known if she died as a child or whether she reached adulthood and perhaps married and moved away from Kingston Deverill.

She did not appear on the 1841 Census at Kingston Deverill with her family when she would have been approximately 21 years old.

There are a couple of Harriett Brimble marriages noted on the St. Catherines Houses indexes, which may relate to her, however these have not as yet been followed up.

There is no record of a Harriett Brimble/Bramble in Wiltshire at the time of the 1851 Census. ²³

30. Caroline BRIMBLE. Daughter of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 21 Apr 1822 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵.

No further record of Caroline can be found in the Kingston Deverill Parish Registers. Caroline reached adulthood and appeared on the 1841 Census with her family but appears to have married and moved away from Kingston Deverill.

There is no record of a Caroline Brimble/Bramble in Wiltshire at the time of the 1851 Census. ²³

It is interesting to note, that Caroline's sister, Isabella, named her second daughter, Caroline Keziah.

31. Jonathon BRIMBLE. Son of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 6 Feb 1825 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Died 7 Oct 1858 in Honeysuckle Point, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 10 Oct 1858 in Christchurch, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Shepard ⁹, Labourer ². Religion Church Of England.

Jonathon appeared on the 1841 Census in the home of his parents at Kingston Deverill. He was aged 15 years and described as an Agricultural Labourer.

He migrated to Australia with mother, Sarah and sister, Isabella on the 'Lord Stanley'. The ship departed from Plymouth on 4 May 1850 and arrived in Sydney on 27 Aug 1850. Details on shipping indents for Jonathon are as follows:

BRIMBLE, Jonathon, aged 23 years, Shepard, born Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire. Parents John and Sarah, mother on board. Church of England. Could Read and Write. In good health - no complaints. Paid 2 pound passage.

Jonathon married Bridget EGAN, 10 Jan 1853 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Died 1920 in Wickham, NSW, AUSTRALIA 40.

Although the marriage for Jonathon and Bridget has been sighted, Bridget's age at marriage is not clear and is either 21 years or 27 years. Both Jonathon and Bridget signed at the marriage and the witnesses included James May.

The marriage took place the same day that Jonathon's sister, Isabella married John Court and that his sister-in-law, Louisa Brimble nee Stone married James May. It is believed it was the last of the three marriages.

Both Jonathon and Bridget were described as emigrants. A search of Shipping Indexes has revealed the arrival of several Brigdet Egan's, however none have been positively identified as Jonathon's wife at this time:

· EGAN, Bridget, 18 yrs, House Servant born Athy, Kildare, Roman Catholic, Read and Write per "Lady Peel" 1849.

· EGAN, Bridget, 18 yrs, Nursemaid, born Cullin, Tipperary, Roman Catholic, Could neither Read/Write per "Lady Peel" 1849.

· EGAN, Bridget, 18 yrs, Nursemaid, Kilkenny, Roman Catholic, Read/Write per "Lismoyne" 1849.

· EGAN, Bridget, 21 yrs, Farm Servant, Roman Catholic, Could Neither Read/Write per "Hyderabad" 1848.

· EGAN, Bridget, 16 yrs per "Thomas Arbuthnot" 1850.

Given that Bridget signed the marriage register, she is most likely to be the House Servant from Athy, Kildare who arrived on the "Lady Peel" in 1849 or the nursemaid born Kilkenny who arrived on the "Lismoyne" in 1849, as none of the others could read or write.

Jonathon died of Scirrhous of Pylorus, which lasted 6 months. His sister, Isabella was the informant of his death. He had been in the colony 8 years. He and his wife, Bridget had no children.

32. Andrew BRIMBLE. Son of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 31 May 1829 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Died 27 Oct 1850 in On Board "Emigrant", Stradbroke Island, QLD, AUSTRALIA. Buried in Stradbroke Island, Queensland, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Labourer ⁹.

Andrew appeared on the 1841 Census in the home of his parents at Kingston Deverill. He was aged 11 years and described as an Agricultural Labourer.

He married Louisa STONE, daughter of William STONE & Hannah, 6 Feb 1849 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Born Circa 1830 in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁹. Died 1907 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³⁹.

At the time of their marriage, Andrew was aged 20 and described as a Shepherd. Louisa was 17 years old, a spinster of Monkton Deverill (although Shipping records indicate she was born at Kingston Deverill and 2 yrs older). While Andrew signed the marriage register, Louisa left her mark. The witnesses were Andrew's brother, Jonathon and Maria Norris. ⁵

They had the following children:

Andrew, his wife, Louisa and their daughter Emily arrived in Australia on the 10 August, 1850 on board the ill-fated Emigrant. It is presumed that Andrew died of typhus as an epidemic had broken out on board the ship, which was in fact in quarantine on Stradbroke Island at the time of his death. It is possible that Andrew was not aware that his mother, brother and sister had obtained passage on the Lord Stanley that left Plymouth 2 ½ weeks later.

The shipping indents indicate that Andrew was a labourer and that his parents were Andrew and Jane and that his mother was living in Wiltshire. Andrew was Church of England, could read and write, and had no relatives in the colony. The indent also indicates that he was in good health on arrival and had no complaints concerning the voyage. An amendment appears, indicating that Andrew infact died in quarantine on October, 27. There is however, no entry on the NSW Birth Deaths and Marriage index to confirm this.

A son, William, who was born on the voyage, is also listed on the shipping indents, however no record of baptism for a child by this name can be found. A baptism for an Andrew born whilst the ship was at sea and baptised in October has been located. As this child was baptised 3 days before the death of Andrew Snr. it is believed he was later given his father's name, as his father would have been unlikely to survive.

The Emigrant sailed from Plymouth on 17 April and arrived in Queensland on 8 August, but was ordered into quarantine on Stradbroke Island due to a thypus outbreak. The following appeared in the Morton Bay Courier on Monday, 12 August, 1850:

The 'Emigrant' did not touch at any port during her passage out, nor speak any vessels connected with these colonies. the numberof immigrants originally on board, as reported to us, was 39 married couples, 55 single women, 72 single men, 37 male and 27 female children under fourteen years of age, and 3 infants. This would make 272 in all, although we have another report that the number was 276. There is no opportunity at present of correcting the discrepancy. When the ship was off the Cape de Verds, on the 12th May, typhus fever first appeared on board, and in all there had been sixty-four cases of malignant typhus. Two deaths occurred since the ship entered this port, viz., onme of Friday and one of Saturday last: in all the deaths up to Saturday were 18, of which 14 were from typhus fever, and one of the seamen was amongst the latter number. There were 15 sick patients and 12 convalescents in hospital last Saturday. The ship was ordered into Quarantine at Stradbroke Island, and was on her way there when the Health Officer left the bay. The ketch 'Aurora' has been engaged to convey provisions , tents, and other necessaries to the quarantine ground, for the immigrants. Mr. Watson, the local immigration agent, has gone down to take charge of the station, and four pensioners by the 'Bangalore', engaged for the service, have been sent down as guards.

The 'Emigrant' brought a mail, which, having been properly fumigated, was brought to Brisbane and delivered to the postmaster yesterday.

The 'Mary White', for Sydney, sailed from Gravesend on the 14th April.

The book Who's Master, Who's Man by Michael Cannon makes mention of the Emigrant in addressing the voyage out:

"... Another forty, mainly Irish, died on the 'Emigrant' in 1850, along with all three doctors sent to Dunwich quarantine station to tend them."

An obelisk has since been erected to mark the graves of the emigrants who died at Dunwich Quarantine Station. The inscription reads:

Around this stone

an earthly home

have found elsewhere

Also on board the Emigrant was a cousin of Andrew's father, John Brimble (son of Thomas Brimble and Elizabeth Tudgay). Although John survived the voyage, his wife, Elizabeth and young son, Samuel, also lost their lives to typhus fever.

It would appear that once the quarantine period had been lifted, Louisa made her way south into New South Wales where she was re-united with Andrew's family. She married James MAY on 10 Jan, 1853 in Christchurch, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁵and they had 10 children together.

33. Sophia BRIMBLE. Daughter of John BRIMBLE & Sarah FORWARD. Born in Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND. Christen 21 Oct 1832 in St. Marys, Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire, ENGLAND ⁵. Died 28 Jul 1850 in At sea, Bass Strait, AUSTRALIA ¹⁰.

Sophia appeared on the 1841 Census in the home of her parents at Kingston Deverill.

Sophia was not listed on the shipping indents as arriving in Australia with any of her family who migrated in 1850, however, it has since been discovered that she immigrated on the Emigrant, along with her brother, Andrew and his family. There is a letter written by the ship's Captain, W. H. Kemp, to the Editor of the Moreton Bay Courier which was published on Saturday, September 7, 1850 which says that Sophia Brimble died at sea on 28 July, four days after the ship had entered Bass Strait. ⁸⁴

SIR,— On perusal of your paper of the 31st ult., I perceive in your leading article your urging the necessity of the Executive Council examining most strictly into the cause of so much unhappy loss of life on board the ship Emigrant, on her late passage to this port with Commissioners’ immigrants, and contrasting the ship with others which have arrived under private superintendence. As far as regards the ship Emigrant, she was acknowledged by the authorities in Sydney last year as a most eligible ship for the conveyance of passengers, both as regards her spacious ‘tween—decks and her sailing qualities,—I having landed my immigrants on the 90th day from being put on board at Plymouth. I had on board 50 souls more than this year, viz., 326 instead of 276; and only one adult died during the passage, and that of consumption, although measles prevailed throughout the whole of the children, 117 in number.

I have been now in command of ships for eighteen years, and much of the time employed in conveying passengers, having crossed the seas ten different voyages, with ships full and crowded, two of which have been to Sydney-1841 and 1849, and the present one to Moreton Bay; during the whole of which I never lost more than one adult on any passage, and two or three children. Even during the rage of typhus in Ireland and Liverpool, in ‘46 and ‘47, I went to Quebec with 500 on board; I lost but one, when there were vessels arriving with 150 deaths on board,-not single instances, but numbers with upwards of 100. You wish the thing to be diligently inquired into. I make no doubt but such will be the case, or it will be different from any voyage I have made under the Commissioners, which have been generally sifted so closely as almost to make the commander of a ship feel himself degraded to hear questions put to some who are in no way fit to answer them. However, I am happy to say I never yet had fault found.

As far as regards the sickness, I presume you are aware what a fearful malady typhus is ashore, even where you can get away from it; but how much more so must it be on board ship, where there are no back doors to escape by, and where you can hardly get a second person to attend upon the sick! for almost certain everyone who attends falls, which has been the case on board my ship. The surgeon at times could scarcely get anyone to attend; ‘twas only by the utmost persuasion such could be done. We have only one, who has been a constant attendant upon the sick, who has escaped altogether,—John Farmer; he is an aged married man, and I wonder, when I look at him, how he has sustained the fatigue. J. W. Ball the surgeon’s assistant, struggled through it in a most wonderful manner until a few days since; but it had such a severe hold of him that he died after going on shore. The same with George Huiston; he was also in the hospital attending; when he went ashore a lease might have been taken of his life, but it took him off in a few hours. The female nurses have both had very severe attacks, but are recovering; and Dr Mitchell himself, after superintending the whole both night and day, was attacked the day we arrived here; he has been laid down ever since, and very near death’s door, and still lingers.

Up to my arrival in Bass’s Straits, 24 July, our cases of deaths (although there had been a fearful number of cases) were not so many; 3 infants of diarrhoea, 1 married woman apoplexy, 3 married women and 1 man fever, and the matron from decay of nature, making 6 adults and 3 infants; after which time it gained ground fearfully, having nothing but light winds on the coast from 24th July to 8th August, when I was boarded by my pilot in Moreton Bay, no less than 7 adults fell a prey to fever , and after he was on board up to the 13th, 3 more were taken off. As for the true origin of the sickness, I believe there is no possibility of ascertaining, but it often occurs from people who have been rather scant of provisions, or using bad, being placed upon full allowance; also the changes of climate will, I believe, often have a similar effect. Isabella was aged 6 yrs at the time of the 1841 Census and is listed in the home of her parents in Kingston Deverill.

Isabella arrived in Australia on board the Lord Stanley on 26 August 1850, with her mother, Sarah and brother, Jonathon. The following details have been extracted from shipping indents:

She first married John COURT, son of James COURT, 10 Jan 1853 in Christchurch, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁵. Born Circa 1829 in Somerset, ENGLAND 12. Died 22 Nov 1880 in Adamstown, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 24 Nov 1880 in Christchurch, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Miner ².

It is believed that John had arrived in Australia on the Champion on 2 June 1852 as a steerage passenger. The Champion was a schooner, which sailed from Nelson, New Zealand on 11 May with a cargo of timber.

The Nelson Examiner recorded the arrival of the vessel from Wellington on 11 May.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on the arrival of the Champion on 3 June, 1852:

The Champion from Nelson, reports the arrival of the Spray, from Newcastle on the 12th ult, and the John Phillips, from Auckland on the 13th. Spoke the William, hence, for Wanganui on the 26th ultimo.

It is possible that John left the ship at Newcastle, as this is where all further records concerning John can be found.

It is not known how or when John arrived in New Zealand.

The only details concerning John's origins come from the birth certificates of his children, and his death certificate. On his children's birth certificates, his birthdate varies between 1825-1829, and all indicate he was a native of Somersetshire. ¹²

His death certificate again confirms him to be a native of Somersetshire, however his age given as 60 making his birthdate c1820. His father's name and occupation were given as James, a farm labourer. ²

The witnesses to Isabella and John's marriage were her brother, Jonathon and Bidget Egan. Jonathon and Bridget were also married that day, presumedly after Isabella and John. A third marriage also took place that day, between Isabella and Jonathon's sister-in-law, Louisa and James May. Louisa's husband, Andrew having died in quarantine shortly after their arrival in Australia.

John and Isabella had the following children:

The birth certificates of William in 1859 and Mary in 1871 indicate that another daughter to those identified may have been born and died in childhood. William's birth certificate states that Sarah Sophia was living and aged 3½ years, however this was the age of Caroline Keziah. To date, no burial or death record has been found for Sarah Sophia.

John appeared on the Electoral Roll at Hartley Vale in the electorate of Northumberland in 1869/70 until 1876/77 when his residence changed to Commonage, he last appeared on the roll in 1878/9. ³¹

John died as a result of cardiac disease and diarrhoea, which he had suffered for about 3 weeks. His son, William was the informant at his death. ²

The following appeared on the Newcastle Morning Herald of 24 November 1880 (as extracted from the Hunter Valley Registers):

Isabella was living on the South Coast with Joseph Goundry as his wife for several years prior to their marriage, which actually took place in Sydney. The marriage was performed by Thomas Unwin and was witnessed by Sarah and L. Unwin. The Unwin's were related to the BRIMBLE family through marriage.

It is not known when Isabella left the Newcastle area, however the first record of her at the South Coast was in 1883. Joseph Goundry first appeared on Electoral Rolls at Clifton in 1884/5, however disappeared from the Electoral Rolls from 1876/77.

She is also noted as a witness to the birth of several of her grandchildren at Clifton, namely, Robert in 1883, Isabella in 1887, and John in 1889. On each occasion she is described as Mrs. Goundry, nurse.

Isabella married Joseph GOUNDRY, son of Joseph GOUNDRY & Mary SCOEFIELD, 16 Jul 1886 in St. Lukes, Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1830 in Durham, ENGLAND 2. Died 18 Jul 1894 in New Lambton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 20 Jul 1894 in Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Labourer ³, Miner ².

To date, Joseph's arrival in Australia has not been located although at his death his wife, Isabella stated that he had been in the colony 33-34 years, which would estimate his arrival at about 1860.

Joseph has been identified on Electoral Rolls in 1869/70 and 1870/71 in Northumberland, at which time he was living at Borehole. He next appears on the rolls at Lambton, again in the Northumberland electorate in 1876/7, but however is not listed again until 1884/5 in the electorate of Illawarra at Clifton where he is listed until 1889/90. He next appears on the roll in Northumberland in 1891/92 at New Lambton where he is last recorded in 1893/94. It is also noted that a Ralph Goundry was also residing in the Northumberland electorate from 1874/75 until 1891/92 and a William Goundry from 1869/70 until 1881/82. Whether there is a relationship between these men is not known ³¹.

Although described as a widower at the time of his marriage to Isabella in 1886, no details of this previous relationship or to any children are included on his death certificate. It is of course possible that Joseph migrated to Australia as a widow. Having said that, there is a marriage of Joseph GOUNDREE to Jane BROWN in 1862 and a birth of an Alfred J. GOUNDRIE son of Joseph and Jane in 1863 on the NSW BDM Indexes. There are no subsequent death entries to suit Jane or Alfred ¹¹.

Joseph died of influenza, which he had suffered for 7 days.

Isabella died from senile decay. Her son, William was the informant at her death.

The following Funeral Notices appeared in the Newcastle Morning Herald of 15 January 1902:

An obituary was published in the same paper, the following day:

On Tuesday, Mrs. Goundry, who has been a resident of Adamstown for 40 years, passed away at the age of 69 years. She was the mother of Alderman Court, and had been in declining health for some years. During the past few months she resided with her daughter-in-law at the residence of Mrs. Turnbull, sen., in Union-street, and received every care and attention. Her funeral took place yesterday, and was attended by a large number of people and old residents of the township. The funeral service was performed by Rev. G. B. Stevenson of St. Stephen's Church. Mrs Goundry leaves two sons and two daughters.

Emily's age and birthplace are uncertain, as conflicting details have been uncovered. Shipping records indicate she was born at Kingston Deverill c. 1848, although her parents were not married until Feb. 1849. Extracts from the Family Register of Christchurch Cathedral in Newcastle indicate she was born 16 Aug, 1846 at Monkton Deverill and that she was baptised at Christchurch, Bristol. There is no record of a baptism at St. Marys, Kingston Deverill.

She married Daniel GURLEY, 23 Oct 1866 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1838 in Fifeshire, SCOTLAND ³. Occupation Mariner ³.

At the time of her marriage to Daniel Gurley, Emily's age was given as 21, however church and shipping records indicate she would have only been 17 or 18 at the time. Why, is not known, as her mother, was one of the witnesses at her marriage. ³

It is believed that as Sarah Sophia was baptised on the day of her birth that she may have died soon after. No burial or death record has been found for Sarah Sophia, although it is presumed she died prior to William's birth in 1859.

William's birth certificate states that Sarah Sophia was living and aged 3½ years when he was born in 1859, however this was infact the age of Caroline Keziah.

It is most likely that Sarah Sophia was named after her maternal grandmother, Sarah, and her mother's sister, Sophia.

It is believed that Caroline Keziah was named Caroline, after either her mother's sister, or her mother's aunt (who was alive and living in Kingston Deverill at the time). The name Keziah has not been identified in the Brimble family and is possibly a family name from the Court family. As John and Isabella's first daughter was named after her maternal grandmother, one wonders, if the second daughter may have been named after her paternal grandmother! Unfortunately, John's mother's name is not known at this time.

She married William Alfred BALL, son of Thomas BALL & Ann Clark PERRATON, 27 Mar 1884 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁷¹. Born 9 Sep 1852 in Salcombe, Devon, ENGLAND ⁷¹. Occupation Mariner ⁷¹.

Upon the birth of her first child, the following appeared in the Newcastle Morning Herald on 9 May 1885:

BALL, Mrs. W.A - Birth of a son at residence, Bishopgate St, Wickham. Wife of Captain W.A. Ball of Rose M. barque.

The above were extracted from the Hunter Valley Registers.

The family moved to Sydney some time after Ida's birth and in 1898 were noted as living at "Ralston" 56 Wells Street, Annandale. By 1900 they had moved to 20 Little Edward Street, Pyrmont 71. Captain Ball died here in 1901. The following funeral notices appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of 30 March, 1901:

After her husband's death, Keziah remained at Little Edward St, until 1903, when she opened at Grocery store at 22 Union Street, Pyrmont. In 1907, Keziah moved to 132 Harris Street, Pyrmont, again as a grocer. By 1908 Keziah had moved to 75 Murray Street, Pyrmont, where she conducted a boarding house, although she was only listed in the Sands Directory from 1919-1923 at this address 30. In her latter years, Keziah resided with her daughter, Ida and son-in-law, George Robinson at Balmain. ⁷¹

Keziah passed away on 6 March, 1935 71. The following have been extracted from the Sydney Morning Herald, dated 6 March, 1935:

William was born at Honeysuckle Point near Newcastle. The informant of his birth, was his father, John. ¹

William first appeared on Electoral Rolls in 1881/82 in the County of Northumberland at Commonage, and like his father, became a miner. By the time of the 1882/83 Electoral Roll, the area previously referred to as commonage was known as Adamstown.

He married Deborah Ann TURNBULL, daughter of Matthew TURNBULL & Ann HUNTER, 17 Sep 1884 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA. ⁷⁰ Born Circa 1866 in Durham, ENGLAND ². Died 2 Feb 1924 in Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 3 Feb 1924 in Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Wife, Mother and Nurse. Religion Church of England.

Deborah and her parents, Matthew and Ann, and their many children arrived in Australia on the Northbrook in 1879. ⁹

Deborah was known as Nurse Court and was the owner of the Medomsley Hospital, Adamstown. ⁷⁰

William and his family resided at Union St, Adamstown until his death in 1931.

The following description of Adamstown was noted in the Newcastle Directory and Almanac:

This village is about four miles from Newcastle, and adjoins Hamilton. It is rapidly growing into importance, and, with its stately Public School, Mechanics' Institute, and other prominent buildings, is taking its place amongst the leading colliery townships. It contains three hotels, four general stores, one place of worship, and a post office; and has a population upwards of 400, ...chiefly miners employed at the surrounding collieries. Mr. E. Reay is the proprietor of the Assembly Rooms, where concerts, &c, are held. The Public School has 250 pupils enrolled, with an average attendance of 180. Mr. R. McCredie, schoolmaster; Miss Connolly, assistant.

Edward Reay, the above mentioned proprietor of the Assembly rooms, was the father of William's sister-in-law, Hannah, who had married his brother, John.

William later became Mayor of Adamstown. ⁷⁰

A search of Land records reveal that William was involved in a number of land purchases in the Adamstown area of Newcastle from 1889. ³²

By the time of the 1903 Electoral Roll William's occupation was given as Colliery Weighman ³¹ . He was an Alderman on Adamstown Council and later became Mayor of Adamstown. He died on 11 September, 1931.

John was born at Pit Town. His father was the informant and the witnesses to his birth were H. Jackson, Mrs. Greenwell and Annie McNaughton.

He first married Hannah REAY, daughter of Edward REAY & Mary Ann Isabella FAIRBURN, 5 Aug 1881 in St. John's, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁷⁰. Born in ENGLAND. Died 14 Aug 1907 in Cessnock, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³³.

Although Hannah's age is not known, she was under 21 years at the time of her marriage to John. Hannah's brother, John, and John's sister, Caroline Kezia were the witnesses to the marriage. Hannah's father, was the proprietor of the Assembly Rooms in Adamstown. ³

On the 10 November, 1887, John sequestrated his estate and was subsequently declared bankrupt. At this time John and his family were living at Mount Kembla, near Bulli, having left Newcastle due to slackness of work. His debts had been accumulating since 1885 and were mostly for the provision of goods, although one was for medical attendance. The total of his debts was near to 70 pounds, however his assets were realised at just one pound and five shillings being household furniture. At this time, John's income as a miner amounted to about one pound per week and no debts were proven. ⁸⁰

In 1902, John made application to the Supreme Court for a Certificate of Conformity, was required to pay four pound, one shilling and sixpence and was declared solvent on 26 August, 1902. It would appear this application was made so that John could obtain a publican's licence, as this was the occupation given on latter Electoral Rolls.

John's wife, Hannah, died in 1907 whilst they were living at Cessnock. The following Funeral Notices appeared in the Newcastle Morning Herald of 16 Aug:

In October 1908, John purchased land in Government Rd, Cessnock, however sold it a short time later to a baker, Mr. George Hamilton Barnes. ³²

John married a widow, Margaret VOSS, daughter of Edward VOSS & Margaret SCOTT, 31 Dec 1908 in St. Batholomews, Pyrmont, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁷⁰.

It is reputed that Margaret had one child prior to her marriage to John, and that she ran a laundry in the goldfields. ²⁵

John died at Glouster on 26 September, 1922.

50. Isabella COURT. Daughter of John COURT & Isabella BRIMBLE. Born 24 Feb 1864 in Hartley Vale, Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 7 Oct 1920 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹⁴. Buried 8 Oct 1920 in CofE Cemetery, Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹⁴. Religion Church Of England.

Isabella's birth was registered by her father who signed with his mark. The witnesses to her birth were W. Irwin and Mrs Boundy. She was the fifth of John and Isabella's children. ¹

Isabella was just 16 years of age when her father died of heart disease, and following his death, she resided with her older brother, William at Hamilton. Although the youngest, she was the first of the Court children to marry.

Isabella married Robert Cornelius HAILS, son of Robert HAILS & Mary McKENZIE, 19 Feb 1881 in Hamilton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born 9 Nov 1855 in Southwick, Durham, ENGLAND ¹. Died 13 Jun 1895 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 14 Jun 1895 in Church of England Cemetery, Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Occupation Miner ³. Religion Church Of England.

Although Robert's birth at High Southwick has been confirmed with his birth certificate. There is no record of his baptism in the Southwick Parish Registers. It would seem most likely that his family relocated shortly after this time and that he was baptised elsewhere. His parents have not been identified on any Census records to date after 1851.

Robert had migrated to Australia with his brother John (and his wife Sarah) on the Windsor Castle which arrived in Brisbane, Queensland on 10 March 1876. At the time, Robert was described as single and aged 20 yrs. His brother John was 25 years and married, John's wife, Sarah was 23 years. ⁹

Although Robert made his way to Newcastle in NSW, where he was to meet his future wife, Isabella, it is not known what happened to his brother John or John's wife, Sarah. A search of BDM records for both NSW and Queensland has not revealed any birth records for children of this couple.

Isabella and Robert were married in the home of her brother, William who also consented to the marriage as her guardian, as Isabella was under 21 years of age and her father was deceased. In fact, she was 5 days short of her 17th birthday. The ceremony was performed by George James, a Minister of the Primitive Methodist Church and was witnessed by her brother William and Sarah Jane King. ³

It appears that Isabella and Robert moved a couple of times during their marriage, most likely in search of employment.

Robert was first identified on the 1882/3 Electoral Roll at Newcastle, as was his brother, John with the spelling of their surname as HAILES, situated at Commonage.

Robert did not appear on the Electoral Roll in 1883/4 in either the Newcastle or Illawarra electorates, although it is known that he was living at Clifton at the time. Robert is listed on the 1884/5 Electoral Roll at Clifton again with the HAILES spelling.

In 1885/86 he is in the electorate of Northumberland at Adamstown, which is consistent with the birth of his third child, Mary. The family appear to have remained in Newcastle, as Robert was included on the 1886/7 Electoral Roll at Stockton in the electorate of Newcastle.

Although it is known the family returned to the Illawarra district as their fourth child, Isabella was born at Clifton in 1887, Robert is not recorded on the Electoral Roll again until 1891/2 at Clifton in the electorate of Illawarra with the spelling HALES. He is recorded here again in 1892/3 and 1893/94, the latter spelling being HAILES. No further listings of Robert can be found on Electoral Rolls.³¹

The township of Clifton came into being in 1877, when the Coal Cliff Colliery was developed. From a Press Report in 1877 it is learnt that a number of well built weatherboard cottages with galvanised iron roofs had been erected about half a mile from the mine, and the spot was known as "the Village of Clifton." The mine manager, Mr. Hale, had a villa residence almost on the edge of the cliffs.

Robert was declared bankrupt twice during the 1890's.

On 3 March, 1890 Robert petitioned the Judge in Bankruptcy and was subsequently declared bankrupt. Robert declared that he was a miner, residing at Clifton, and was married with five children. He claims slackness of work and pressure of creditors caused his bankruptcy. A total of 16 creditors were noted including his brother-in-law, Captain Ball. The debts were contracted from 1885 through to 1889 and totalled nearly 42 pounds. The creditors included storekeepers, butchers and bakers at Clifton, Stockton, Adamstown, Hamilton and Wickham. Robert's only asset was wearing apparel valued at four pound. Obviously Robert's wages would have been similar to that of his brother-in-law, John Court, who had also been declared bankrupt in 1887, and thus such debts would be quite significant to those on an average miners wage of only one pound per week.80

The second occurrence was on 11 Apr 1893 at which time Robert made the following statement:

I have filed my statement of affairs. I don't wish to amend it. I have been bankrupt before that was about 4 years ago I never obtained my certificate I was then living at Clifton was a miner my liabilities were between 30 and 40 pounds that was through slackness of work and pressure of creditors. I have not paid anything of that yet. My present occupation is that of a coal miner at Helensburgh. I kept no books of account. I attribute my present bankruptcy to slackness of work and sickness in my family. 3 at once and one died.

At this time, his liabilities were just over 25 pound.

Life for this family was one of many hardships, and on the evening of the 15th June, 1895, Robert was killed after being run over by a train on the Helensburgh Railway line.

The following appeared in the Illawarra Mercury dated 15th June 1895:

A FATAL ACCIDENT - A HELENSBURGH MINER KILLED BY A TRAIN

A miner named Robert Hails was run over by a train and killed early on Thursday morning in one of the tunnels near Helensburgh railway station. He had stayed rather late in the township and on going home had to pass though the tunnel where the accident occurred. The driver of the train, feeling that something had been run over, stopped the train and went back, and found the deceased lying dead and terribly bruised. One leg was cut off and carried about two chains from the body. The stationmaster was roused, and the Helensburgh police communicated with, and the body was conveyed to an hotel for the inquest. The deceased who was 39 years of age, leaves a widow and six children unprovided for. Evidence was given by Isabella Hails (wife of the deceased), William Hanley, jams Gordall, Henry Jeffreys (driver of the engine) Thomas Smith (guard), and the local constable (J.H. Wilkinson).

The jury returned the following verdict -'That deceased came to his death by injuries accidentally received on the 13th of May though being run over by a passing train - No.67 - in No. 2 tunnel on the Illawara line. We desire to add the deceased was trespassing on the line, and great credit is due to the driver and guard in calling instant attention to the accident and stopping the train.'

Unfortunately although the actual Coroner's Inquests for this period have not survived the Registers of Coroner's Inquests were consulted ⁸¹. Francis Woodward held the inquest on 14 June at Helensburgh Court House. The only additional information included in the Register was that Robert possessed `household effects valued at 5 pound'. Robert did not leave a will, nor was any record found in the Intestate Index.

Robert was buried in an unmarked grave in the Church of England section at Helensburgh Cemetery. His daughter, Sarah was buried with her father when she died four years later. Several members of the Hails and related families were also later buried alongside Robert, including his daughter, Mary and her family, his wife Isabella, her second husband and their son. ⁵²

Some four years later, Isabella married Benjamin BATEY, son of John BATEY & Dorothy MADDISON, 23 Dec 1899 in Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1866 in Northumberland, ENGLAND. Died 1923 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³⁹. Buried 22 Aug 1923 in Helensburgh Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁵². Occupation Coal Miner ³.

Isabella married Benjamin at 157 Elizabeth St, Sydney by the rites of the Congregational Mission Church. He gave his occupation as a Miner and she Home Duties. He was a bachelor, and she a widow. Benjamin's surname was recorded as BEATY. The witnesses to their marriage were James JEFFREY and N. HENNESS. It is possible this was Isabella's son-in-law, as her daughter Annie married a James JEFFREY in 1897. ³

Benjamin had arrived in Australia at Brisbane, Queensland on 6 July 1886 on board the "Duke of Westminster" which had sailed from London on 12 May. He was described as 22 yrs, single, a miner who could read and write, Protestant, born in Durham. Also onboard were his sister Elizabeth and her two young children, Dorothy and Elizabeth. His passage was by way of remittance, however at this time it is not known who provided passage for Benjamin.⁹

Isabella and Benjamin had two children:

Both Isabella and her husband, Benjamin appears on the Illawarra Electoral Roll at Helensburgh in 1903, 1906, 1908, 1909, and 1913. He as a Miner, her occupation listed as Domestic Duties. ³¹

It would appear that life with Benjamin was quite comfortable for Isabella, particularly when compared with the life she had with her first husband, Robert Hails. The Batey family began investing in land and in 1905 Benjamin purchased his first block of land, being Lot 599 Boomerang St, Helensburgh. In 1907 Isabella purchased Lot 594 which was behind the land Benjamin had purchased two years earlier. In 1908 Benjamin made another two land purchases, Lot 600 in Boomerang St, and another piece of land in Undola Rd, Helensburgh 32. It is not known whether Benjamin and Isabella built on these blocks, as it would appear they actually resided in Parkes St, Helensburgh.

Of the land purchased by Benjamin and Isabella, Benjamin sold Lot 600 to Andrew Otago McCullock, his stepdaughter's brother-in-law in 1918 who subsequently sold it to Charles Campbell, Mary's husband in 1922. Upon Charles' death the title was transferred to Mary who had the land sub-divided and sold in 1945.

The land in Undola Rd was also sold in 1918, and Lot 599 Boomerang St. was sold in 1919. Isabella's land (Lot 594) was transferred to her daughter, Dorothy in 1919. Dorothy retained the land until 1970 when it was sold.

It has been said that Benjamin was quite careful with his money, however he did develop a weakness for gambling later in his life and lost all his property. This has not been confirmed, although the sale of all their property at this time does appear to add some substance to this story.

Isabella died in 1920. A funeral notice appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of 8 October:

BATEY - The relatives and friends of the late Mrs. Isabella Batey are kindly invited to attend her funeral to leave her late residence Park Street, Helensburgh, this day at 4pm for Church of England Cemetery, Helensburgh.

Isabella was buried at Helensburgh Cemetery near the grave of two of her grandchildren and her headstone reads ¹⁴:

My dear mother.

Erected by her loving daughter and son-in-law

Mary and C.J. Campbell.

Benjamin Batey died in August, 1923 and was buried in the Church of England section at Helensburgh Cemetery near his wife, Isabella and their baby son, Benjamin. ⁵²

A search of the Probate Indexes for the years 1919-1928 has failed to locate wills for either Isabella or Benjamin, and no record for either could be found on the Intestate Index. ³³

Henry is the sixth child of John Court and Isabella Brimble. He was born near Borehole. The witness to his birth was Mrs. Conway and the informant was his father. ¹

Henry James died at just 1 month of age of marasmus, a deficiency disease.²

Mary's birth was registered by her father, John and was witnessed by J. J. Hill and Mrs. Conway. ¹She died when just 8 days old of a congenital weakness from birth. ²

The following information about Edwin was provided by his granddaughter, Sue Welch:

Edwin was in the South Wales Borderers, in World War I, and also was assigned to the Black Watch towards the end of that war. He fought in the Dardanelles, according to his daughter, Lois, and also fought at the Somme and at Ypres. He apparently used the old speech, with "thee" and "thou". At one point Ruth Forward, Edwin's sister, was asked to go to her family in Utah, to take care of a family, which had suffered a terrible fire tragedy. She left Britain just as her brother Edwin was returning to Europe from the Dardanelles. Edwin had a tattoo on his arm of a clasped fist, with the name Ruth. So the story goes that two "Ruths" crossed on the ocean. ²²²

Caroline was the fourth known child of Andrew and Eliza. At the time of her birth in 1882 she had two sisters living. One of the witnesses to her birth was a Mrs. Gurry. ¹

Young Caroline died at 6 years of age of injuries she accidentally received on the Stockton Coal Company's railway line. The following appeared in the Newcastle Morning Herald on 29 October 1888:

BRIMBLE, Caroline - At Lookout Hotel, Stockton Coroner G.C. Martin conducted an enquiry into the death of this child. The jury was address by Dr. Henry Bonnefin who said a miner had informed him that a child identified as Caroline Brimble had been crushed by a truck on the Station Company's estate.

The body had been conveyed to the home of the parents and when he inspected it, it was in a dreadful state of mutilation.

The injuries when described made several jurymen most uncomfortable.

He sent for Dr. Beeston and prepared to amputate 3 limbs. This was done but the child did not survive the operation, which had been skilfully done by Dr. Beeston. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and made a rider that children should be prevented from approaching coal lines.

John Court, Robert Hails and Captain A. Ball were also uncles. His mother was Deborah.

As her mother died when she was just 15 years old Bella, as she was known, went to Sydney and lived with her Aunt Kezia at Pyrmont. Bella can recall her Aunt Keziah, and describes her as being "very nice, but strict". Bella can also recall scrubbing the floors of the boarding house, which she feels may have contributed to her bad knees!. Her husband had a men's shoe shop which also sold leather goods ⁷¹.

She married Henry C. BUTTERS, 1912 in Newtown, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³⁹.

Hannah was the first of Robert Hails and Isabella Court's children. The midwife at was named Mrs. Hails - is it possible that this was Sarah, the wife of her uncle, John ?

She married James JEFFREY, son of John JEFFREY & Elizabeth WEIGHTMAN, 1 May 1897 in Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1872 in Bedlington, ENGLAND ³. Died 20 Feb 1942 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Buried 21 Feb 1942 in Helensburgh Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁵². Occupation Miner ³.

Annie was just 17 at the time and the marriage took place at 57 Philip St, Sydney by the rites of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Witnesses to their marriage were Hannah JEFFREY (most likely James's sister) and Robert WALKER.³

James migrated to Australia in 1880 on the "La Hogue" with his mother, Elizabeth, sisters, Isabella and Mary Ann and brothers, Hugh and Robert. ⁹

The informant and witness of Robert's birth was his grandmother, Isabella Goundry. It is known however that Isabella did not marry Joseph Goundry until 1886. Isabella also stated that her daughter and son-in-law were married in England, when in fact they were married in Newcastle, NSW. She also stated that her daughter, Isabella was born in England, when she too was born in Newcastle. It is not known why she gave false information to the Registrar, except perhaps to cover the fact that she was living with Joseph Goundry without being married, although her husband had died in 1880. Is it possible that she left her husband prior to his death and moved to Clifton with Joseph ?

Robert first appeared on Electoral Rolls in 1906, a resident of Helensburgh, his occupation listed as Miner. He remained in the South Coast area for many years. ³¹

He first married Emma Sarah REEKS, daughter of George REEKS & Maria SALISBURY, 6 Feb 1909 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Born 26 Aug 1885 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Died 27 Apr 1978 in Turrella, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁴. Buried 1 May 1978 in Woronora Crematorium, Woronora, NSW AUSTRALIA ⁴. They were divorced 23 Nov 1926. Occupation Domestic ³. Religion Church Of England.

Emma, a young widow, married Robert Hails according to the rites of the Methodist church in the home of Robert's step-father, Benjamin Batey. The witnesses to their marriage were Robert's brother, John and sister, Isabella. ³

Emma was previously married to Bartholomew Metcalfe at Petersham by a Salvation Army Officer. The witnesses to their marriage were Emma's sister, Selina and her husband William Walker, who also happened to be Bartholomew's step-brother. ³Sadly, Bartholomew was killed in a mining accident, just 8 months after they were married. ²

Robert purchased land at Helensburgh in 1916 from his brother-in-law Charles Campbell. This land is described as Portion 597 and was located on Boomerang St, Helensburgh. He sold the land in 1918. ³²

Robert and Emma were living at Coledale when their daughter Myrtle Annie was born in 1914.

It would appear the family moved shortly before this, as Robert and Emma's two younger children, were born in the Sydney suburb of Concord in 1917 and 1918.

By 1925, Robert had reappeared on Electoral Rolls at Helensburgh.

Emma and Robert were divorced in 1926 after 17 years of marriage. ³ In 1932 Emma and her children were residing at 30 Hannan St, Arncliffe.³⁰

Robert married Eileen MOON, daughter of Edward James MOON & Sarah Martha WETHERBY, 31 May 1927 in Canterbury, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1896 in Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRLIA ³. Occupation Home Duties ³.

Robert and Eileen were married at the Registrar's Office at Canterbury. At the time he was working as a Council Labourer and they were both residing at Lakemba. The witnesses at their marriage were W. A. Dalton and Doreen Murphy. ³

In 1932 Robert was residing at 27 Pentland Avenue, Punchbowl.30 It is believed that at some stage he had property in the vicinity of Waterfall. He later moved to Bathurst and was residing at Perthville when he died in 1957 aged 76 years of myocardial degeneration, which he had suffered for several years. The informant at his death was his son-in-law, R. T. Pethybridge. ²

The following funeral notice appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of Tuesday, 24 September, 1957:

"HAILS - The relatives and friends of the late ROBERT HAILS of Waterfall and Bathurst, are invited to attend a graveside service at Wornonora Cemetery at 2pm., today, Tuesday. (Full service Bathurst, Monday.)"

No mention of his death could be found in the Bathurst papers of that time. Robert did not leave a will, however, his son by his second marriage, Robert John, made application to the Supreme Court to administer his father's estate. This was granted 1 June, 1961. ⁸²

My dear husband

Mary lived a long and healthy life and later moved to the Sydney suburb of Gymea where she died in her 85th year. Mary is buried with her two children who died in infancy. Their headstone reads:

The following appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of 1 August, 1970:

DEATHS:

"CAMPBELL, Mary - July 30, 1970, at hospital, late of 45 Chapman St, Gymea, dearly loved sister of Dorothy and fond nephew of Ernest. Aged 85 years. In Gods Care."

FUNERALS:

"CAMPBELL, - The relatives and friends of the late Mary Campbell of 45 Chapman St, Gymea, are invited to attend her funeral: to leave the Baptist Church - Corner of Flora & Auburn Streets, Sutherland (Monday) after a service commencing at 2.15pm for the Helensburgh Cemetery."

92. Isabella HAILS. Daughter of Robert Cornelius HAILS & Isabella COURT. Born 15 Sep 1887 in Clifton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 18 Aug 1967 in Kogarah, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Buried 21 Aug 1967 in Woronora Crematorium, NSW, AUSTRALIA ²⁵.

The informant of Isabella's birth was her father, Robert. Her grandmother, Isabella Goundry is noted as the nurse present at the birth.¹

She married Gavan McCULLOCH, son of John McCULLOCH & Jane BRUCE, 25 Jan 1911 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1886 in Woodburn, Richmond River, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³. Occupation Dairy Farmer3.

Isabella was 23 years old when she and Gavan were married at the Batey's residence in Helensburgh. The marriage was witnessed by Isabella's brother, John, and Gavan's brother, Andrew.

Isabella and her husband Gavan appeared on Electoral Rolls in 1913, still residents of Helensburgh, and at that time, Gavan was described as a wheeler. ³¹

They had the following children:

i. Gavan Hails McCULLOCH

ii. Dorothy Isabella McCULLOCH

Isabella died shortly before her 80^th birthday. The following Death and Funeral notices appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of 21 August, 1967:

DEATHS:

"McCULLOCH, Isabella - August 18, 1967, at her residence, 15 Burgess St, Kogarah, dearly beloved wife of Gavan, loved mother of Gavan and Dorothy, fond mother in law of Evelyn and Ron, and dear grandmother of Gavan and Cheryl, aged 79 years."

FUNERAL:

"McCULLOCH - The relatives and friends of the late Mrs ISABELLA McCULLOCH of 15 Burgess St, Kogarah, are invited to attend her funeral to leave the Metropolitan Funeral Home corner Princes Highway and Bestic Street, Rockdale. This day, after service commencing at 2.45pm for the Woronora Crematorium."

93. John HAILS. Son of Robert Cornelius HAILS & Isabella COURT. Born 29 Aug 1889 in Clifton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 4 Jun 1948 in Melbourne, VIC, AUSTRALIA. Buried in Springvale Cemetery, VIC, AUSTRALIA. Occupation Mechanic ³. Religion Methodist.

The informant of John's birth was his father, Robert. A surgeon, nurse and witness are all named on his birth certificate, the nurse being his grandmother, Isabella Goundry. It is noted however, that his father has stated there were 2 boys and 3 girls living at the time of John's birth. However, no evidence of the birth of another son to this couple can be found and it is considered that the information given included John. ¹

John first appeared on Electoral Rolls at Helensburgh in 1913 as a Wheeler . He later moved to Lithgow and then some time before 1922, Melbourne, Victoria. ³¹

At the time of his marriage, John was described as a bachelor. He gave his residence as Federal Coffee Palace, and his usual residence as Lithgow, NSW. The witnesses to their marriage were Ellena McADAM and Joseph Arthur HARRIS, who was likely Martha's brother.³

John died as the result of a stroke. ²

He married Martha HARRIS, daughter of Joseph Barclay HARRIS & Ellen BELL, 30 Mar 1922 in St. Kilda, VIC, AUSTRALIA ³. Born Circa 1894 in Stawell, VIC, AUSTRALIA ³. Known As Matt.

They had the following children:

94. Rose HAILS. Daughter of Robert Cornelius HAILS & Isabella COURT. Born 10 Sep 1891 in Clifton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 25 Nov 1892 in Clifton, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 26 Nov 1892 in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Religion Church of England.

Rose is the sixth child of Robert Hails and Isabella Court. Her birth was witnessed by Mary Dryson. The informant was her father. ¹

Rose died at 14½ months of age. The cause of death was given as collapse of lungs, moapena cough, which she had suffered for 2 months prior to her death. ²

95. Sarah HAILS. Daughter of Robert Cornelius HAILS & Isabella COURT. Born 24 Oct 1893 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 3 May 1899 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 4 May 1899 in Helensburgh Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Religion Church of England.

Sarah was born at Cawleys Creek near Helensburgh. She was the seventh child of Robert Hails and Isabella Court. The midwife's name was Sarah Stork ! ¹

She died at 6 years of age, after suffering Lobar Pneumonia sympta for 12 days. The informant of her death was her Uncle John Hails. ²

She was buried with her father at Helensburgh Cemetery. ⁵²

96. Violet HAILS. Daughter of Isabella COURT. Born 1897 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA39.

Violet's birth certificate has not been sighted, and the BDM indexes do not include the name of a father. She was born two years after the death of Robert Hails. ¹¹

She married Richard Stanley SMITH, son of Richard SMITH & Elizabeth, 1914 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³⁹. Born 1896 in Narrabri, NSW, AUSTRALIA ³⁹. Known As Stanley.

They had the following children:

i. Sidney Eric SMITH

ii. Stanley C. SMITH

iii. Freda Joyce SMITH

iv. Patricia SMITH

97. Dorothy BATEY. Daughter of Benjamin BATEY & Isabella COURT. Born 14 Nov 1900 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 29 Jul 1991.

Dorothy was the first of Benjamin Batey and Isabella Court's children. There were no witnesses to her birth, her mother was the informant. ¹

She married Cuthbert Spergent WALLBANK, 1920 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ⁴⁰.

They had the following children:

i. Ernest Arnold WALLBANK

98. Benjamin BATEY. Son of Benjamin BATEY & Isabella COURT. Born 27 Jul 1904 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ¹. Died 16 Sep 1904 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Buried 19 Sep 1904 in Helensburgh Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA ². Religion Church of England.

Benjamin was the second of Benjamin Batey and Isabella Court's children, although he was Isabella's 10th child. The witness to his birth was Mrs. Ford. His mother was the informant. ¹

Young Benjamin died at just 9 weeks of age of gastritis and premature birth. The witnesses to his burial were his uncles, James Jeffrey and Charles Campbell. ²
