Funeral
Parlours
C. G. Thomas & Son, St Mary's Road, Southampton c 1880 submitted by Jo who says "an awful lot of people used my g g grandfather's funeral service. Some people probaby have photos of prominent funerals, old 'in memoriam' cards, receipts for services etc. plus Staff and Servants are listed on the Censuses, Obituaries etc. That open up a whole new world for people tracing their kinfolk." Jo also adds the following " Charles George Thomas was born 1854 in Southampton. He was also a JP and worked for the Southampton Corporation also was a guardian at the Workhouse. My Nan remembers he used to carve the meat on Christmas Day there and he laid the Foundation Stone for the new hospital (general). I don't Know what year he started the Funeral business but apparently he owned the first motorised hearse in Southampton and also had the contract to collect the dead from Netley Hospital. Tankerville Chamberlayne was a good family friend and his wife was Nan's Godmother.
