..*1st Wife of August Herman Frank:

The relationship between Louisa Young (December 22, 1863 - June 17, 1913) and August Herman Frank (September 3, 1854 - October 7, 1916) introduced the Frank family into our family tree. At the time of this writing, however, I have been unsuccessful in tracing the Frank family to Europe. This work is ongoing. For the moment, therefore, the story of the Frank family begins with our immigrant ancestor, Oscar Frank (September 27, 1825 - June 4, 1890)

Oscar Frank (September 27, 1825 - June 4, 1890) Born in Saxony, Germany, died in Lewisville, Ohio

wife: Carolina Brubach (May 4, 1830 - February 27, 1912)

children: Henry Jacob Franks (December 9, 1854 - December 19, 1889)

Harriett (Hattie) Frank (October 10, 1862 - ?)

Caroline Frank (abt 1866 - ?)

Rosa Anna (Rosie) Frank (abt 1869 - ?)

Oscar Frank (September 27, 1825 - June 4, 1890) immigrated to America in the 1840s. He first appears in the Federal Census data in 1850 where he is listed as a single 22 year old laborer from Germany. He was living with a German family, Michael and Elizabeth Batram who were 48 and 45 years old, respectively. This census listing of Batram has subsequently been confirmed to be Bertram. At the time of the 1870 Census, Oscar spelled his name, Oskar. Oscar Frank married Carolina Brubach (May 4, 1830 - February 27, 1912) and the couple had 9 children, one of whom was August Herman Frank (September 3, 1854 - October 7, 1916).

partner: Louisa Young (December 22, 1863 - June 17, 1913)

children: William Edward Young (May 20, 1881 - October 24, 1970)

August Herman Frank (September 3, 1854 - October 7, 1916) and Louisa Young (December 22, 1863 - June 17, 1913) conceived a child about August 1880 who was born Willie Young on May 20, 1881. August and Louisa never married and the child was given the surname of his mother, Louisa Young (December 22, 1863 - June 17, 1913). August Herman Frank (September 3, 1854 - October 7, 1916) married Matilda A. Keeser (1863 - 1931) on April 6, 1884 in Monroe County, Ohio and the couple had 11 children. About October 4, 1916 August H. Frank was working in the field and got a pain in his side. He kept working and fell violently ill with what was subsequently diagnosed as a ruptured appendix. He died 3 days later from acute paratinitus.

So far in this book, we have dealt almost exclusively with the ancestors of William Edward Young (May 20, 1881 - October 24, 1970). With few exceptions, William Young's ancestors were from Germany and Switzerland. With William Young's marriage to Julia Viola (Ola) Hodge (December 7, 1888 - June 21, 1956) on September 7, 1905, a good measure of English blood was introduced into the family line. But, even Ola Hodge Young brought considerable German lineage. Ola's grandmother, Julia Ann Winland was largely German. But, the Whitacre and most likely the Hodge lines can be traced back to origins in the British Isles. My mother, Audra Audra Lavada Young (January 24, 1907 - April 8, 1990), frequently observed that if the members of our family had a different colored skin spot for each nationality in our heritage, we would be poka dotted. While this is certainly true, about three-quarters of her dots would favor the German.

Our Whitacre line is undoubtedly of English origin and we will review the details below. However, four generations of Whittaker/Whitacre family lived in America between the time of our immigrant ancestor, John Whitaker/Whitacre (1678 - 1737), and Sydnor Whitacre (1836 - 1887) who introduced the German element into the clan by marrying Julia Ann Winland (1841 - 1923). At this time I have not researched the spouses of those four Whitacres to see what other nationalities may be represented. This would be a good project for some future genealogist or family historian.

wife: Esther Deane (abty 1657 - abt 1680) of Colne Twp, England

children: Robert Whittaker (March 30, 1677 - November 18, 1677) Born and died in Barley, Lancashire, England

@ John Whitaker/Whitacre (November 24, 1678 - 1737) Born in Barley, Lancashire, England and died Makefield, Bucks Co., PA

For many years the descendants of the Whittaker/Whitacre line in America knew our ancestors back only to the immigrant, John Whitaker/Whitacre (1678 - 1737). More recently the line has been researched back to Robert (abt 1624 - ?) and Jane Hardman Whittaker. The discussion that

Printed Book Page # 325

follows has been provided by the unknown researcher who pursued the family back into England. So, let us begin our visit with our Whitacre line with this couple. Like most of the information on our Swiss and German ancestors, the information that follows has not been proven by the author and, therefore, should be considered a guide or leads for more serious research.

John Whitaker/Whitacre (November 24, 1678 - 1737) Born in Barley, Lancashire, England and died Makefield, Bucks Co., PA

wife: Jane Bond Scott married on December 3, 1702

children: @ John II Whitacre (May 14, 1704 - 1768)

Our immigrant ancestor from England was John Whitaker/Whitacre (November 24, 1678 - 1737). He was born in Barley, Lancashire, England and died Makefield, Bucks Co., PA. John was married on December 3, 1702 to Jane Bond Scott. Jane Bond Scott was the widow of John Scott. John Whitacre and Jane Bond Scott were the parents of John II Whitacre (1704 - 1768). John Whitacre (abt 1675 - 1737) was the original immigrant from England that began our Whitacre line.

FETTERS: (The source for the following appears to be FETTERS. Nothing further is known about this source at this time.) Although proof is lacking, it would seem reasonable to believe, as is often claimed, that John WHITAKER sailed to America with the SCOTTs and other Lancashire and Yorkshire Friends on the Britannia in 1699. ... John SMITH's will, signed on the Britannia 29 July 1699, appointed James DILLWORTH of Philadelphia and John SCOTT, "late of ye Hill in Yorkshire", as executors. SMITH's will was proved at Philadelphia on 9 September 1699, just 16 days after the Britannia had arrived at its destination. John SCOTT signed the executor's bond, as did John WHITAKER as the "attorney" or co-bondsman. ... Then, about seventeen months later, John WHITAKER served in the same capacity for Jane (Bond) SCOTT, the executrix of the estate of her husband, John SCOTT.

Thus the close association of WHITAKER and SCOTT immediately after SCOTT's arrival in Pennsylvania makes it seem highly likely that WHITAKER was a Britannia passenger. But we do not know whether the men became friendly during the voyage, or already were acquainted prior to leaving England.

If John was acquainted with the SCOTTs before leaving England, his origins would be in the area near the Yorkshire-Lancashire border that had been the SCOTT family's home. Colne Parish and nearby Burnley Parish, Lancashire, ... have been inhabited by WHITAKERs from the earliest days that parish records were kept there. ... Burnley is only 10 miles southeast of Sawley, where the SCOTTs resided until the late 1690s.

Our John WHITAKER was a Quaker, and Quakers living in that region belonged to Marsden Monthly Meeting. ... Three WHITAKERs (John, James, and Henery) were members of Marsden MM in the 1670s and 1680s. These men apparently were related, perhaps brothers, and judging by

Printed Book Page # 326

the marriage dates for the first two, probably were born about 1650.

KERNS: (The source for the following appears to be KERNS. Nothing further is known about this source at this time.) The immigrant ancestor, John WHITACRE Sr. allegedly came to America about 1699 from Yorkshire, England. Being inspired by the Quakers, he settled in William Penn's Colony of Pennsylvania. Proof of the Bond-Scott-Parker relationships is best-presented by Harry Hollingsworth, "The American Genealogist", Volume 54, 1978, pg. 19-24. Kerns is also indebted to the late Dr. George E. McCracken for his ground-breaking research reported in his book, "The Welcome Claimants Proved, Disproved, and Doubtful", (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company), 1970, pg. 226-227.

The above the only information that I have to support our claim for these ancestors.

There is a fine book on the genealogy of the Whitacre and related families compiled by Rual P. Anderson (October 23, 1902 - June 17, 1993) entitled, "GENEALOGY - SPAID, ANDERSON, WHITACRE and a NUMBER OF ALLIED FAMILIES also HISTORICAL FACTS AND MEMOIRS." This book is available from the Library of Congress where it has the LOC Catalog Number 75-26456. It is recommended to anyone interested in the details of the Whitacre lineage. Like the book you are now reading, Anderson's lineage, data and history of the Whitacre family is offered with only a modicum of proof of its contents. But, it serves as an excellent guide to anyone wishing to prove the lineage.

For the purposes of this book, I have borrowed liberally from Rual Anderson's account of the Whitacre family prior to the immigration of Sydnor Whitacre to Monroe County, Ohio. Material subsequent to the immigration is the product of the authors own research.

They moved to Kingwood, NJ in 1756, and resettled in Loudoun Co, VA in 1761. Same records indicate John and Naomi received certificate for removal on December 1, 1756.

It is of interest to note that of the 9 children born to John II Whitacre (May 14, 1704 - 1768) and Naomi Hulme (1713 - 1789), 5 of them moved to and died in Ohio. Naomi married Samuel Smith and moved to Jefferson County, Ohio; Joshua married Ann Steer and moved to Columbiana County, Ohio; Joseph married Jane Wilson and moved to Columbiana County, Ohio; Caleb married Phoebe Gore and moved to Warren County, Ohio and Robert married Sarah Roach and moved to Miami, Warren County, Ohio. It is likely that Julia Ann Winland named her daughter, Mary Jane Whitacre, after the sister of her grandfather, Martin Baker. Martin Baker's youngest sister who was just 2 years older than himself was Mary Jane Baker. Mary Jane Whitacre married George Washington Hodge on October 6, 1883 in Monroe County, Ohio. They had 5 children, one of whom was the author's grandmother, Julia Viola (Ola) Hodge (1888 - 1956).
