Erastus R. McMains , wife Mabel, and their son James, settled in Scott Township, Burnett County, in 1897. Two additional sons were born in Spooner, Washburn County, WI, which is about 20 miles from the McMains homestead site. Two younger daughters were born in Wisconsin (census records), probably in Spooner, however no documentation has been located to confirm this. The land patent was issued Nov. 10, 1903. It does appear, however, that Erastus and family occupied the land as early as 1897 (See Carl McMains birth certificate ) |

This is a detailed map of Scott Township. The grid is not exact, but is an approximate recreation of the section lines as determined by the federal township system. Section 20 contains the land that was granted to Erastus R. McMains. Roughly speaking, the land involved was contained in the northeast corner of the section (northeast of Oak Lake ). |

The land granted to Erastus McMains was described in three lots (1) The east half of the northeast corner; (2) The northwest part of the northeast corner; and government lot #3 (Lots which did meet the acreage requirement of 40 acres were given a number instead of directional label). Total acreage was 159 40/100. Roughly speaking, the land, today, is bordered by Augustine Road, on the north, and County Highway A and Oak Lake , on the south. As is usual, over the years, the land has been subdivided into smaller lots. Several owners hold deeds to these smaller lots. |
