Okey Lewis Higginbotham (1908-1980) WV

Okey Lewis Higginbotham, 71, of Route 1, Seven Pines, died Thursday in his home. He was born July 22, 1908, a son of Mrs. Mary Carroll Higginbotham of Mannington and the late Luther Lee Higginbotham.

He was married twice. His first wife was the late Sarah Stevens Higginbotham, who died Nov. 11, 1969.

Survivors include his second wife, Dorothy Higginbotham; seven daughters, Elaine and Arlene Higginbotham, both at home; Mrs. Jack (Marie) Monroe, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. George (Pearl) Sieberns, Rochelle, Ill.; Mrs. Lee (Icie) Efaw, Mannington; Mrs. Clarence (Katherine) Dingus, Erie, Pa.; Mrs. Emory (Jessie) Johnston, Baltimore, Md.; three sons, Ralph, Montgomery, Al.; Okey Higginbotham, Clarksburg; Jerry Joseph Higginbotham, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Marshall Lester and Joseph Harold of Mannington; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Burnfield and Mrs. Benjamin (Sarah) Burnfield, both of Warren, Ohio; Mrs. Rosa Spencer, Laurel, Md.; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Four sons, one daughter, two grandchildren, a sister, Lulu, and a brother, Clay, are deceased.

He was a retired employee of the Joanne Mine at Rachel, and a member of the East High Street United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Masters Funeral home in Mannington where funeral services will be held a 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Steve Runnion will officiate and burial will be made in the Mannington Memorial Cemetery.

Lonnie Higginbotham (1899-1980) VA/WV African American

Lonnie Higginbotham, 80, of Harper Heights was dead on arrival Sunday in a local hospital.

Born in Lynchburg, Va., Dec. 12, 1899, he was a son of the late John and Lula Higginbotham.

He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Helen Stevens of Glen Jean.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlors in Beckley with the Rev. Eric Tyree officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Robert Lee Higginbotham (1952-1980) WV

Buffalo—Robert Lee Higginbotham, 27, of Buffalo, Putnam County, died Tuesday at his home in Welcome Travelers Trailer Park, Buffalo, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

He was an employee of Carbide’s Institute plant and was a 1970 graduate of Buffalo High School.

Surviving: son, Alan Bradley of Reedy; parents, Mac and Dorothy Cash Higginbotham of Eleanor; brother, Bill of Cross Lanes; grandmother, Iva O. Higginbotham of Buffalo.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. James Wandling officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Curtis Buell Higginbotham (1910-1980) WV

Curtis B. Higginbotham, 69, of 115 132nd St., Chesapeake, formerly of Baton Rouge, La., died Tuesday in General Division, CAMC, after a long illness.

He was a retired pipefitter and a member of the Pipefitters Local in Baton Rouge. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Baton Rouge. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving: daughter, Mrs. Jackie Vickers of Chesapeake; mother, Mrs. Barbara Boldt of Beckley; sister, Mrs. Clotille French of Charleston; brother, Murrell of Charleston; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Leonard Johnson Funeral home, Marmet, with the Rev. Paul Patton officiating. Burial will be in Marmet Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Cannelton—John Lewis Higginbotham, 47, of Cannelton, died Monday in Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness.

He was a retired computer operator for the Civil Service Commission in Macon, Ga. He was a veteran.

Surviving: John E. of Camp David, Md.; daughter, Mrs. Lee Ann Bucciero of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Mrs. Mildred Fleming of Cannelton, Mrs. Flossie Crislip of Sutton, Mrs. Betty Dorsey of Lumberport.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the rev. Okey Webb officiating. Burial will be in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bridgeport—Abby June Higgenbotham, two-day-old daughter of Bruce E. and Darlene Benazza Higgenbotham of Riven Dale Dr., died Thursday, Aug. 28, at United Hospital Center where she was born Aug. 26.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Higgenbotham of Farmingdale, N.Y.; and her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Darvi Benazza of Bethel Park, Pa.; one brother, Bruce Robert Higgenbotham, and one sister, Amanda Jean Higgenbotham, both at home.

Mrs. Emma Leota Winget Higginbotham, 79, of Red House, Putnam County, died Sunday in Staats Hospital, Charleston.

She was a former teacher in Putnam and Kanawha counties and a retired employee of Stone and Thomas. She was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving: husband, P.H. Higginbotham; son, Roger of Red House; daughters, Mrs. Alice Jean Cooper of St. Albans, Mrs. June Paulson of Dallas, Texas; sister, Mrs. Olive Bryan of St. Albans; six grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Bartlett Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Dr. S. Robert Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Higginbotham, 87, of 5211 MacCorkle Ave., S.E., formerly of Buffalo, Putnam County, died at her home Friday after an extended illness.

She attended the Cross Creek Community Church at Buffalo.

Surviving: foster daughters, Mrs. Nina Mallett of Red House, Mrs. Sylvia Hartley of Eleanor, Mrs. Goldie Stanley of Kenova; sister, Mrs. Vicie Craig of La Rue, Ohio; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cross Creek Community Church, Buffalo. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday at the Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo.

Bancroft—Willard James Higginbotham, 71, of Bancroft, Putnam County, died Wednesday in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was a retired miner.

Surviving: wife, Daisey Hartley Higginbotham of Cleveland, Ohio.; daughters, Mrs. Ruth Ann Evans of Charleston, Mrs. Louise Persinger of Hometown, Mrs. Juanita Graf of Cleveland; sons, James Francis of Cleveland, Thomas of Red House; sister, Mrs. Loretta Dicker of Nitro; half sister, Mrs. Emmer Kinser of Charleston; half brother, Felix Holmes of Charleston; four grandchildren.

Simon Mason Higginbotham, 91, of 206 Fairview Ave., Diamond, died Thursday at home after a long illness.

He was a retired barber and a member of Diamond Methodist Church.

Surviving: sons, Hollis of Sand Ridge, Frank of Diamond; stepsons, Nathan Maddox of Chesapeake, Otto Maddox of Dickinson; daughter, Mrs. Ella Rutledge of Belle; stepdaughter, Mrs. Mae Patterson of Logan; brothers, Alvin and Hansford, both of Glasgow, Burl of Troy, Pa.; sister, Mrs. Sadie Barnette of Glasgow; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchild.

MIAMI—Mrs. Alma A. Higginbotham, 76, of Miami, formerly of Charleston, W. Va. Died Monday in a Miami hospital after a short illness.

Surviving: sons, Charles E. and Jimmy H. Higginbotham, both of Charleston, Okey L. Higginbotham of St. Albans, W. Va. And Paul Higginbotham of Miami; daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Neff and Mary L. Higginbotham, both of Miami, and Delores J. Smith of Sebring; brother, Freeland Brown of Seth, W. Va.; sister, Noma Brown of Logan, W. Va.; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Service will be Thursday at Van Orsdel Bird Road Chapel in Miami. Burial will be in Miami Memorial Park.

Akron, Ohio – Mrs. Irene Williams Higginbotham of Akron, formerly of Dunbar, W.Va., died Tuesday in Akron after a long illness.

She was a charter member of First Church of God in Charleston, W.Va., and was past president of the Woman’s Club of Dunbar. She was the widow of Dr. Cecil M. Higginbotham of Dunbar.

Surviving: sister, Mrs. W. J. Comley of Philadelphia, Pa.

Service will be 1 pm Saturday in First Church of God, Charleston, with the Rev. Edward F. Bowman officiating. Entombment will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may call from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the First Church of God, 915 Main St., Charleston. Mrs. Rosa Ann Higginbotham, 88, of 1330 13th St., Nitro, died Monday in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.

She was a native of Boone County.

Surviving: sons, Chancey and Charles J., both of Nitro; sisters, Mrs. Icy Lambert of Nitro, Mrs. Ivy Pearce of Pontiac, Mich.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cook-Pauley Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Wade Austin officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jon Hubert Higginbotham (1941-1981) WV/DC

Washington, D.C.—Jon Hubert Higginbotham, 39, of Washington, D.C., formerly of St. Albans, W. Va., died Monday in Washington after a sudden illness.

He counseled and worked with troubled youth through agencies in Washington. He attended Wilmington College, Brigham Young University, and West Virginia State College.

Surviving: parents, John and Ernestine Higginbotham of St. Albans; sisters, Mrs. Martha Setterstrom of St. Albans, Mrs. Lora Hayes of South Charleston, Betsy Higginbotham at home; brothers, Sam of Chapel Hill, N.C., Bill of St. Albans.

The body will be cremated. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens with the Rev. Charles A. Rogers officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Patchwork, 1583 Lee St., Charleston, W. Va. 25311.

Carrie Francis Price Higginbotham (1903-1981) WV

Mrs. Carrie Price Higginbotham, 77, of Charleston, died Sunday at home.

She was an educator with 47 years of service in Kanawha County schools. She was a former teacher and supervisor and a retired principal of Fort Hill Elementary School. She was a graduate of Concord College and received her master’s degree from Marshall University. She was a member of Christ Methodist Church, Beacon’s Sunday school class, United Methodist Women, pioneer Club, state and county education associations, National Retired Teacher’s Association, Elementary Principals’ Association, American Association of University Women and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was past president and current historian of Alpha Delta Kappa and vice president of the Tillikum Garden Club.

Surviving: daughter, Mrs. Stephen McCann of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Christ Methodist Church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home.

Mary M. Cross Hibbs Higginbotham (1882-1981) WV

Mary M. Hibbs Higginbotham, 98, Meadowdale, formerly of Hundred, died Saturday at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Sept. 17, 1882, in Wetzel County, daughter of the late Samuel and Delila Cross.

She was a member of the Meadowdale United Methodist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Laurine Hibbs of Fairmont, Alta Hibbs Wilson of Wadestown and Maxine Higginbotham Mack of Earnshaw. There are also three step-daughters, Mae Hibbs Parrish of Mannington, Lucy Higginbotham Rebolt of Fairview and Hazel Higginbotham Stiles of Wadestown; and one sister, Betty Simpson of Waynesburg, Pa.

Also surviving are five sons, James Hibbs of Meadowdale, with whom she made her home; Harold Hibbs of Warren, Ohio; Samuel Hibbs of Wadestown; Earnest Hibbs of Burton, and Charles Taylor of Hundred; and one step-son, John E. Hibbs of Mannington. There are also 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was precede in death by her first husband, William Riley Hibbs in 1926 and her second husband, Thomas J. Higginbotham in 1954. Also deceased are one son and one daughter.

Friends will be received at the Lazear and Dent Funeral Home in Mannington from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Charles Daniels will officiate and burial will be in the Uniontown Community Cemetery.

He was an operator retired from American Viscose Corp. and member of Center Point Community Church.

SHINNSTON—Clovis E. Higinbotham, 73, of 748 Debby Circle, Tampa, Fla., died at his residence at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 24.

He was born Aug. 29, 1907, at Shinnston, a son of the late James and Annie Whiteman Higinbotham.
Surviving are one brother, William J. Higinbotham, Clarksburg and five grandchildren.

One daughter and one brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Higginbotham was a retired coal miner and a Protestant.

The body is being returned to Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston.

A lifelong resident of Charleston, she was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois glass company.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine Helmick Higgenbotham; a son, Major Kenneth S. of the U.S. Army in St. Louis; two daughters, Barbara Hays of Weirton, and Mrs. Edward (Patricia) Andochick of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Melvin Malone of Masontown, W. Va.; three sisters, Marie Barry of Steubenville, Maddlyn Santella of Masontown and Evelyn Topp of Michigan; nine grandchildren. Albert Glendower Higginbotham (1903-1982) WV

Albert G. "Bus" Higginbotham, who served as the Wetzel County assessor for 19 years, died Monday in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, at age 79.

A resident of 307 Leap St., New Martinsville, Higginbotham was born Jan. 30, 1903, in Jacksonburg, Wetzel County, son of the late Albert and Jane Mathews Higginbotham.

Surviving are his wife, Garnet Postlethwait Higginbotham, a son, Frank of Chester; three daughters, Mrs. Cecil (Joreen) Nicola of Wintersville, Mrs. Dana (Sonia) Rine of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. James (Nita Faye) Steelback of Wytheville, Va.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Wells Funeral Home, 515 Maple Ave., New Martinsville, yesterday. Friends will also be received at the Bridge Street Church of Christ, New Martinsville, from noon today until services at 1 p.m. with Evangelist Bernard McGrath officiating. Interment in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.

The Wetzel County Assessor’s office will be closed all day today and the Wetzel County Courthouse will be closed from noon until 2:30 p.m.

Dorothy Ann Higginbotham, 31, of Jericho Addition, Mannington, died early Wednesday at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1949 at Mannington, a daughter of John Wesley Higginbotham and Inez Riggs Higginbotham Floyd, both of Mannington.

Her husband, Okey Lewis Higginbotham, died Jan. 24, 1980. Survivors include her parents; two daughters, Elaine and Arlene, both at home; three sisters, Shirley Baker, Carolyn Efaw and Sarah Jane Phillips; one brother, Robert Higginbotham and a step father, Ellis Floyd, all of Mannington.

Friends may call at the Masters Funeral Home in Mannington after 10 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Steven Runnion officiating. Interment will be in Rymer Cemetery.

Robert Ray Higginbotham (1899-1982) MO/WV

Bridgeport—Robert R. Higginbotham, 83, of 623 Rivendell Road, formerly of Farmingdale, N.Y., died Friday morning, May 7, in a Clarksburg hospital.

He was born February 13, 1899, at Fertile, Mo., a son of the late Press G. and Mae Brown Higginbotham.

On March 31, 1933 he married the former Henriette (Peg) Ruschke, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Bruce E. Higginbotham of Bridgeport; one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Karen) M. Smith, Williston Park, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. Valle Higginbotham, Potosi, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Bruce R. and Amanda J. Higginbotham of Bridgeport; Jennifer M. and Brian G. Smith of Williston Park, N.Y.

After graduation in mechanical engineering at the University of Missouri in 1923, Mr. Higginbotham entered a career of aeronautical engineering. He retired from Republic Aviation in 1964.

Mr. Higginbotham was a member of the Farmingdale United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War I serving in the Army Air Corps, a 58-year member and former director of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a member of the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the OX 5 Aviation Pioneers, a charter member of the P-47 Alumni Association and the Steerman Restorers Association.

He was a 60-year member of Blackwell Lodge No. 535 AF&AM of Blackwell, and a 60-year member of the Order of Eastern Star of Missouri Dillon Chapter No. 16 , also of Blackwell. While living in Farmingdale, he was very active with both the Little League and Babe Ruth League ball teams and served as league president from 1953 to 1955.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nitro, a resident of Nitro for 55 years, a retired employee of American Viscose in Nitro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph in 1979.

Born in Narrows, Va., she was a daughter of the late Sidney Jackson and Romerta Mae Frazier Clark. She was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of Mercer County. She was preceded in death by one son, David Clark Higginbotham in 1964 and one great-grandchild.

Oak Hill—Homer Woodrow Grant, 69, and Vera Mae Grant, 65, of Lynchburg, Va., and Marjorie Sarah Shaffer (Higginbotham) of Oak Hill, died Monday of injuries received in an automobile accident on U.S. 60 five miles west of Rainelle, according to Rainelle State police.

Born Sept. 13, 1913, in Virginia, Mr. Grant was a son of the late Homer Cleveland and Vera Merrill Beard Grant.

Mr. Grant was retired from the Meade Paper Corporation in Lynchburg and a member of the Lynchburg United Methodist Church.

The Grants are survived by a son, William Alex Grant of Lynchburg; a daughter, Doris Marie Kloehs of Norwood, Pa., and four grandchildren.

Born July 3, 1918, in Lizemore, Mrs. Grant was a daughter of the late Jarrett Bruce and Ida Mae Morton Legg.

Mrs. Grant, formerly of Oak Hill, was a homemaker and a member of the Lynchburg United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Grant is also survived by a brother, Robert J. Legg of Marysville, Mich.; three sisters, Eva Scott Allen of Harvey, Lecta Price of Summersville and Vada E. Shepherd of Joppa, Md.

Born Feb 12, 1913, in Slab Fork, Mrs. Higginbotham, a sister of Mrs. Grant, was a daughter of the late Jarrett Bruce and Ida Mae Morton Legg.

Mrs. Higginbotham was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill.

Survivors include her husband, John David Higginbotham of Oak Hill; two sons, E. Darrell Shaffer of Oak Hill and Jackie Lee Shaffer of Houston, Texas; two step sons, J. D. Higginbotham of Beckley and Fred Higginbotham of Oak Hill; a brother, Robert J. Legg of Marysville, Mich.; three sisters, Eva Scott Allen of Harvey, Lecta Price of Summersville and Vada E. Shepherd of Joppa, Md.

Joint funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will be in the High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill and at the church one hour prior to services.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lynchburg.

Born in New Martinsville, she was the daughter of the late John and Virginia Guthrie. She was formerly employed at Stone & Thomas in Wheeling.

Surviving are two sons, John Higginbotham of Parkersburg and Kenneth Higginbotham of Heath, Ohio; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, in 1956.

Oak Hill—Mrs. Jessie Margaret Berry Higginbotham, 71, of 128 Third Ave., died Wednesday at 2:55 a.m. in an Oak Hill medical center apparently of a heart attack.

Born April 11, 1913, at Fire Creek, she was a daughter of the late Marion L. and Ethel Haley Berry.

Mrs. Higginbotham was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence, Virgil, Frank and Lester Berry and a sister, Ellen Mae Burns.

Survivors include her husband, Billy W. Higginbotham; a son, Billy Wayne Higginbotham of Oak Hill; three daughters, Rose Marie Fleshman Godbey of Fayetteville, N.C., Margaret Ann Higginbotham of Oak Hill and Sharon Jean Higginbotham of Beckley; two sisters, Elsie Fleshman of Danese and Opal Adkins of Gatewood; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will be in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Mary Virginia Higginbotham, 63, of Huntersville, died Monday, July 9, 1984, in Pocahontas Memorial Hospital following a stroke.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Born July 17, 1920, at Marlinton, she was a daughter of William W. and Minnie W. Auldridge Potter.

Her husband, David K. Higginbotham, and a brother, James E. Potter, preceded her in death.

Surviving her are three sisters, Nellie Marie Oscar and Elva May Wooddell of Marlinton, and Lavinnia R. Cassell, of Cass.

Services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Higgins, with burial in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

Shinnston—William James Higinbotham, 72, of Shinnston, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday, March 25, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Harrison County, a son of the late James W. and Amelia Ann Whiteman Higinbotham.

His former wife, Kathryn Higinbotham, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Brisbin, Shinnston; one son, Robert L. Worcester, Fairmont; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, two brothers and a niece. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Higinbotham was Protestant. He spent many years in the coal business and supervised various mine operations.

John Ellis Higginbotham, 60, died Friday in a Beckley hospital of natural causes.

Born July 15, 1924, at Wickham, he was a son of the late Joseph Morris and Annie Mae Graham Higginbotham.

Mr. Higginbotham was a retired Systems Technician for AT&T, a member of AT&T Telephone Pioneers and a veteran of the Army.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred R. Higginbotham, at home; two sons, John Ellis Higginbotham II of Mabscott and Robert Higginbotham of Beckley; two daughters, Debra G. Bennett of Grandview and Mrs. David (Sherrie) Ball of Winter Garden, Fla.; one brother, Kenneth Lee Higginbotham of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Celia Mae McKinney of Charleston and Pauline Hedrick of Cool Ridge; and 1 grandchild.

She was born Oct. 23, 1952, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Robert and Violet Bonnell Tucker, who survives in Smithfield.

Her husband, Ross Higginbotham Jr., whom she married Dec. 21, 1968, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lisa Kay Higginbotham, at home; one sister, Miss Deidra Tucker of Smithfield; two brothers, Gary B. Tucker of Clarksburg and James E. Tucker of Folsom; maternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth Bonnell of Lumberport.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents, Bryan and Ortha Tucker.

Mrs. Higginbotham was Pentecostal by faith and a member of the Pentecostal Ladies Aid at Cambria Church. She attended the schools of Smithfield and Pine Grove Valley High School.

Edward S. “Hick” Higinbotham, 72, formerly of Fairmont, died Sunday in Trumbell Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio after an extended illness. He was born in Fairmont on March 15, 1913 to Samuel and Minnie Bartholow Higinbotham.

He moved to Warren, Ohio in 1952.

He was employed as a steel pourer for the Republic Steel Corporation for 24 years and retired in 1975. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and United Steelworkers Local 1375.

Survivors include his wife, Leo Batson Satterfield Higinbotham; are two stepdaughters, Mrs. James (Margaret) Higinbotham of Champion Township, Ohio, and Mrs. Michael (Mary Ann) Ross of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one stepson, James H. Dr. J. Harry Higinbotham, 85, a retired city dentist, died Saturday afternoon at this residence on Hillcrest Road.

He was born Jan. 15, 1901, in Fairmont, a son of the late Joseph and Grace Swindler Higinbotham. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rousch Higinbotham; two sons, William H. Higinbotham of Morgantown and G. Richard of St. Louis, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Joseph Benson and Hilary Higginbotham of Morgantown, and Leslie and Guthrie Higinbotham of Clarksville, Tenn.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fairmont. He attended West Virginia University and was graduated from the Maryland Dental College.

He practiced dentistry in Fairmont for more than 50 years and retired in 1978. He was a member of Fairmont Rotary Club, Fairmont Field Club, Marion County Dental Association and National Dental Association.

Mrs. Virginia “Ruth” Henley, 87, of Route 1, Box 780, Coal River Road, St. Albans, died Nov. 9, 1986, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Albans, where she was a member of Ella Watson Bible class and Daughters of America. She was a 70-year resident of St. Albans and was a retired schoolteacher in Putnam County.

Nellie M. Higginbotham, 78, of Ravenswood died yesterday at the Care Inn in Ripley after a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late John and Thelma White Elkins. She was a member of the Sand Street Church of Christ and a member of the extension homemakers.

She is survived by two daughters, Marian A. Tucker of Ravenswood and Ethel Thomas of McLean, Va.; one son, Bill Higginbotham of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Miss Ethel Elkins of Ravenswood and Mrs. Audrey Gilbert of Port Arthur, Tex.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Straight-Tucker Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

George W. Higginbotham Jr., 58, of Charleston, died March 6, 1987, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness.

He was born in Charleston and was president of Regal Construction Co. He was the third generation of a family of general contractors in the Charleston and Huntington areas.

Surviving: wife, Ann Higginbotham; daughters, Julia Higginbotham and Scarlett Foster, both of Charleston; sons, David Tate of St. Albans, Chris Foster of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepfather, David Harris of Huntington.

Henry Kesler Higginbotham (1905-1987) WV

Headline: Henry Higginbotham Memorial Service Thursday at 1 P.M.

A memorial service for Henry K. Higginbotham, recognized among his peers as the dean of Elkins lawyers, will be held Thursday at 1 pm at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins.

Higginbotham died at 8:30 am Monday in the Davis Memorial Hospital. Death was attributed to Myelodyplastic Syndrome.

Graveside service will be held at 11 am Wednesday at Maplewood Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Logan Landrum officiating.

Higginbotham, 82, an Elkins lawyer for 53 years, was still practicing law when he was stricken acutely ill a few months ago.

His wife, Mary Ann, was still accompanying him to his office to do his secretarial work.

Higginbotham was a graduate of West Virginia University Law School in 1931 where he was named to the Order of Coif as one of the top five members of his class. He led the entire law school in grades in his final semester.

While in law school, he was a member of the WVU wrestling team for which he won a letter.

Also at WVU, he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and won the James F. Brown prize for writing the best essay on Constitutional Law.

In 1934 he came to Elkins to abstract and check land titles for the U.S. Government. The following year he was admitted to practice in the circuit court of Randolph County and in 1936 left his government job to practice law in Elkins.

On Jan. 25, 1966, Judge Robert E. Maxwell of the U.S. District Court for Northern West Virginia, appointed Higginbotham as one of the U.S. Commissioners for the Northern District of West Virginia.

Judge Maxwell also appointed him as special master on important civil cases to hear evidence and report as a special judge in the Randolph County Circuit Court for the many cases prior to 1978.

Higginbotham served as deputy circuit clerk and served for two terms as the City of Elkins attorney. On Nov. 1, 1950, Higginbotham was appointed a commissioner of chancery of the circuit court of Randolph County, and reappointed to that office in February of 1953. The name of this office was later changed to commissioner. On Dec. 6, 1960, he was appointed a commissioner of accounts of Randolph County.

An accomplished musician, Higginbotham composed and published music.

He was a member of the W. Va. Bar Association, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Loyal Order of Moose, the Elkins Chamber of Commerce, the Elkins YMCA and Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF and AM.

He had been a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1947 and was still singing in the choir when stricken ill.

He was born on March 30, 1905 at Lowell, W. Va., a son of the late Abel Parker Upshur Higginbotham and Roberta Kesler Higginbotham.

On Feb. 17, 1935 he was united in marriage to the former Mary Ann Trice who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Robert and Sally Keeney of Sanford, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Joshua Paul and Harmony Kesler Keeney of Sanford, N.C.

Higginbotham was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Katherine Adams and Lucy Mann; and one brother, Dr. Upshur Higginbotham.

William Moore Higginbotham Jr. (1920-1987) WV

William M. Higginbotham Jr., 66, of Frankford, died Friday, July 24, at Humana Hospital Greenbrier Valley, Fairlea, of an apparent heart attack.

Born August 28, 1920, at Frankford, he was the son of the late William Moore, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Morton Higginbotham.

Mr. Higginbotham was a member of the Frankford United Methodist Church, was a former employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways and was a retired farmer.

He was a member of the Greenbrier County Farm Bureau, National Transportation Association, charter member of the Frankford Ruritan Club and the Frankford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former trustee of the Greenbrier County Youth Camp and the Soil Conservation Commission and was a former owner of the Frankford Hardware Company.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Bennett Higginbotham; two sons, William M. Higginbotham III of White Sulphur Springs and Charles A. Higginbotham of Frankford; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Margaret) Snyder of Tyler, Texas and Mrs. Sam (Lucy) Banton of Frankford; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs. Burial will be in the Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.

Any donations of sympathy may be made to the Greenbrier County Youth Camp or to the Northern Greenbrier Ambulance Service.

Mary Elizabeth Higginbotham, 103, formerly of Route 1, Seven Pines Community, Mannington, died Monday (Aug. 17, 1987) at Wishing Well Manor. She was born March 31, 1884 in Archers Fork, Wetzel County, daughter of the late Marshall and Anna Swiger Carroll.

Her husband, Luther Lee Higginbotham, died Sept. 11, 1961.

Survivors include two sons, Marshall Lester and Joseph Harold Higginbotham, both of Mannington; two daughters, Carrie and Sarah Burnfield, both of Warren, Ohio; 27 grandchildren; and over 100 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Okey Lewis and Clay Higginbotham; two daughters, Lula Higginbotham and Rosa Spencer; nine sisters; two brothers; and several grandchildren are also deceased.

She was a member of the Logansport Methodist Church.

Friends may call at the Masters Funeral Home in Mannington Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Burrows officiating. Burial will be at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

George Alvin Higginbotham, 97, of Glasgow, died Sept. 12, 1987, at home after a long illness.

He was a native of Putnam County and had lived in the Glasgow and Cedar Grove area for more than 63 years. He was retired from Cabot Gas with 39 ½ years service. He was a member of Glasgow United Methodist Church where he was former secretary and treasurer for 30 years. He was a member and former secretary and treasurer of Cedar Grove Knights of Pythias.

Miss Garnett Mellrose Higginbotham, 75, of 203 Thorn Street, Princeton, died Saturday morning in a Princeton hospital.

Born in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Macy Thorn Higginbotham.

She was a retired school teacher having taught at Matewan, Pembroke, Oakvale and Tazewell High Schools. She studied playwriting at the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina and West Virginia University, and the Shuster Martin School of Drama at Cincinnati and the Pasadena Playhouse of Dramatic Art in Pasadena, Calif. She also attended Concord College in Athens.

She wrote the pageant for the Mercer County Bicentennial, the Rams Horn on 1976, and the pageant for Giles County, Call of the River—in 1968.

She was a member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church of Princeton and the Matthew French Chapter of the DAR, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Mercer County Historical Society, the Beta Sigma Phi, the Alpha Delta Kappa, the White Shrine and the Woodman of the World.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Miss Ruby Nile Higginbotham and one brother, William Davis Higginbotham.

Survivors: brother, T. J. Higginbotham of Princeton; niece, Patricia Tolley of Princeton; nephew, Thomas Higginbotham of Princeton.

The funeral will be 2 pm Monday in the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with the Rev. Joseph Shreve officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Mr. Higginbotham was retired from Pittston Coal Co. at Bolt and attended the Red Star Baptist Church.

Mrs. Peyton Randolph (Miriam Gwendolyn) Hughes Higginbotham, 84, of 132 Williams St., Bluefield, died Thursday at Glenwood Park Methodist Home.

Born in Lynchburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Bishop W. A. C. and Mary Butler Hughes. A Bluefield resident for more than 50 years, she was a member of the John Stewart United Methodist Church, where she served as directress of the junior choir from 1929-1952, a member of the United Methodist Women and past chairperson of Council on Ministries.

Mrs. Higginbotham attended public schools in Baltimore and continued her education at Minors Teachers College, D.C., the University if Pennsylvania and Bluefield State College. She was a member of the State Human Rights Commission, United Fund, lifetime member of the NAACP, past Midwest Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, past National President of Bluefield State College Allumni Association, League for Service, Links of W. Va., originator of Jack and Jill of Bluefield, and Alpha Wives.

She was a member of the Levi First Missionary Baptist Church, Rand, the Willing Workers Club, Senior Choir, Missionary Society and Senior Usher Board. She was a 35-year resident of Rand.

Surviving: husband, Kinkle A. Higginbotham; daughter, Mrs. Vernell Megginson of Rand; son, Von of New Jersey; sister, Mrs. Toy Spann of Charleston; brother, Edison Martin of Lenora, Pa., eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Putnam County and was a resident of Teays Valley for 14 years. She attended Teays Valley Baptist Church.

James Dayton Higginbotham Sr. (1937-1988) WV

Glen Jean—James Dayton Higginbotham, 51, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1937 at Stonecliff, he was the son of Johnnie and Oma Sears Higginbotham of Red Start.

Mr. Higginbotham was a retired coal miner, having retired from the Donaldson Mine at Cedar Grove, member of the UMWA and the Red Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Other survivors include his wife, Jinnie England Higginbotham; two sons, James Dayton Higginbotham Jr. of Manassas, Va. and Richard Lee Higginbotham of Glen Jean; a brother, Gerald Higginbotham of Red Star; four sisters, Ruby Kessinger of Red Star, Myralea Jones of Richmond, Va., Virginia Helton of Red Star, and Nilah Clemmons of Oak Hill and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Red Star Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Barnhouse officiating. Entombment will be in the High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill.

Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill and at the church one hour prior to the services.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Robert K. (Bob) Higginbotham, 64, of 310 N. 1st Ave., Paden City, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1989, in Sistersville General Hospital. He was born in New Martinsville Jan. 27, 1925, son of Ida Dietwyler Higginbotham of New Martinsville and the Late Charles P. Higginbotham. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Paden City, a retired manager with A&P Co. after 34 years, a Navy veteran of WWII; member of the Mason-Dixon Amateur Radio Club, member of American Legion Post 86, Paden City, DAV of West Virginia, VFW of Sistersville and Elks Lodge No. 333 of Sistersville.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Barbara Broadwater Higginbotham, one son, Charles Woodrow Higginbotham, Helvitia, WV, one daughter, Lark Higginbotham, Zanesville, Oh., two brothers, William of New Martinsville and Charles of Santa Rosa, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Alberta Jacobus, Rockville, Md.

She was a former sales clerk for The Diamond, Embees and Cox Department Stores. She was a 47 year resident of Dunbar.

Mary Ann Trice Higginbotham (1900-1989) TX/WV

Mary Ann Higginbotham, 88, a longtime secretary and a resident of the Nella’s Nursing Home on Central Street, Elkins, since Jan. 24, died at 5:55 pm Sunday. She had been in failing health since October of 1988.

Mrs. Higginbotham, a resident of 11 Moore St., was the wife of Henry K. Higginbotham, a well known Elkins attorney, whom she married on Feb 17, 1935, and who preceded her in death on June 8, 1987.

She operated Mary Ann’s Sewing Center on Davis Avenue, Elkins for several years. She was a secretary for 70 years and was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Elkins and the Seneca Trail Artist Guild. Mrs. Higginbotham was also a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1947.

She was born Sept. 13, 1900 at Waco, Texas, a daughter of the late William Walter Trice and Cora Smith Trice.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sally) Keeney of Chapel Hill, N. C.; and two grandchildren, Joshua Paul and Harmony Kesler Keeney, both of Chapel Hill, N. C.

Mrs. Higginbotham was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by four sisters, Josie, Lil, Agnes, and Mozelle; and three brothers, Walter, Lewis and Charles.

Born Jan. 1, 1911, at Beury Mountain, he was the son of the late Henry and May Moses Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham was a retired coal miner, member of the UMWA District 29 and the Redstar Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Higginbotham; a sister, Hilda Ritter and two brothers, Lawrence and Loren Higginbotham.
Survivors include his wife, Oma Sears Higginbotham; a son, Gerald Higginbotham of Redstar; four daughters, Ruby Kessinger and Virginia Helton, both of Redstar, Myralee Jones of Richmond, Va. and Nilah Clemins of Oak Hill; three brothers, Clark Higginbotham of Piney View, Lewis Higginbotham of Coal City and Robert Higginbotham of Redstar; four sisters, Clara Harrah of Beckley, Louise Irons of Elkins, Arbutus Bailes of Danese and Wilda Escue of St. Albans; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
