Honorary Membership

At its Meeting on the 11th November 2005 in the Council Chamber of the Law Society of Ireland the Council of the Irish Association of Law Teachers in accordance with Rule 6 of the Constitution of the Association, unanimously agreed that President Mary McAleese become an Honorary Member of the Association.

At its Meeting on the 16th December 2005 in the Council Chamber of the Law Society of Ireland the Council of the Irish Association of Law Teachers in accordance with Rule 6 of the Constitution of the Association, unanimously agreed that Judge Aindrias O Caoimh of the Court of Justice of the European Communities become an Honorary Member of the Association.

International Association of Law Schools

In May 2005 a group of legal educators from fourteen different countries, representing all types of the world’s legal systems, gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, and agreed to the terms of a charter for the International association of law schools. In October 2005, the Ials was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia in the US.

 

Mission to:

* foster mutual understanding of and respect for the world’s varied and changing legal systems and cultures as a contribution to justice and a peaceful world;

* enhance and strengthen the role of law in the development of societies through legal education;

* serve as an open and independent forum for discussion of diverse ideas about legal education;

* contribute to the development and improvement of law schools and conditions of legal education throughout the world;

* contribute to the better preparation of lawyers as they increasingly engage in transnational or global legal practice, and when they pursue careers other than private practice, including governmental, non-governmental, academic, and corporate careers.

* share experience and practices regarding legal education;

 

Membership?

IALS has both voting and non-voting members. Voting members are institutions offering legal education. Non- Voting members include individual legal educators and associations of law schools. all members are committed to the principles and mission of the association and to paying dues in an amount established by the Governing Board.
