PEVERLY, occasionally Peverell. The former sometimes a corruption of Beverly; Peverell dates from the Conqueror.

1 JOHN (2), Portsmouth, ( approximately 82 in Apr. 1731), had a town gr. in 1674. Summonsed in 1679 for failure to pay rates for some yrs.past, and the only Peverly taxed in 1688. Jury 1684, 1692; O. A. Aug. 1685; selectm. 1696. Abs. from meet. 1698, when Thos. Beck was his bondsm. Lists 313a, 324, 330acd, 331b, 332b, 335a, 339, 52. See also Hicks(4). His wife, List 335a. His will, 5 Sept. 1730--25 Nov. 1731, names 3 ch. (not w.): John, Portsm., b. approximately 1688, taxed for Mill Dam 1708 (jr.), m. 5 Feb. 1712-3 Deliverance Lang (7), List 339. Will, 26 Mar. 1753--26 Dec. 1759, names 6 ch. Nathaniel, housewright, Portsmouth, b. 14 Mar. 1690, m. 13 Nov.--1 Dec.1715 Elizabeth Cotton(1), who d. May 1765, List 339. Will, 2 Jan. (d. 20 May) 1769, names 6 ch. Grace, rec. into cov. and bp. No. Ch. 10 Apr. 1709, m. Wm. Ross(4). William, List 339, is poss. a son who d. s. p. by 1730, or Peavey(4).

2 THOMAS, Portsm., m. Jane Walford (Thos.) as early as 1645 and had fenced land bef. 1651. Cf. Feverill. Town gr. 1652; O. A. 2 July 1657. By 1661 his land extended from Sagamore Creek to what is still kn. as Peverly's Hill; his ho. was on the Creek. Highway surv. 1664-5. Lists 330abc, 323, 325, 326a, 43, 313a. See also Evans(16). His widow, Lists 312c, 326c. His will, 19 Apr. (inv. 26 May) 1670, names w. Jane (m. 2d Richard Goss 1), and ch., only the first 3 of age: Mary, b. approximately 1646, m. John Holmes(3). Martha, m. betw. 1666-1670 Christopher Noble(1). John, b. approximately 1649, exec. Thomas. Thos. Dean of Salem sued one T. P. in Salem Ct. in 1701. Lazarus, b. approximately 1657. List 306c. Samuel. Jeremiah. Sarah (did she, not Sarah Walford, m. Michael Hicks [4]?). Phanin, alias Pickering, List 330c.
