Letter to Mary Robinson--a horseback journey, 1841

Mary Robinson lived at or near Chichester in Hanover. Chichester is near the border of Hanover and Westmoreland, on what is now the main road to Montego Bay, through Montpelier and Anchovy. Her fiancé John, the author of this letter, had just returned on horseback from Chichester to his home in Falmouth, by way of Montego Bay, which he called "The Bay". You will notice his comments about the mail and mail boats. He also discussed the romantic attachments of a friend of theirs.

Journal of Thomas Callender--a horseback journey, 1847

Mr. Callender was newly arrived in Jamaica as a missionary with the United Secession Church. He was visiting some of the churches, and he recorded his thoughts and reactions in his journal. His journey covered sixty miles from Hampden, near the boundary of St. James and Trelawny, to Goshen in St. Ann, near the St. Mary border.

Montego Bay in 1940

I present a view of Montego Bay about 100 years later. Montego Bay of 1940 also stands in sharp contrast to Montego Bay of 2000. Much has changed.
