Fonetta Akers Blackburn Elam, 65, of Paintsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at
the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center.
  
Born Sept. 4, 1947, she was the daughter of Pauline Conn Akers of Dana, and
the late Lee Akers.
  
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Kenny Blackburn, who was
killed in Vietnam; and a special Aunt, Ida Akers.
 
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Robert Lynne Elam; a sister, Carol
(Danny) Harvey of Debord; a brother, Paul Lee (Brenda) Akers of Arkansas; and
three nieces, Danetta Harvey, Ashley Harvey, and Erin Akers.
 
Fonetta graduated Salutatorian from Betsy Layne High School in 1965, Morehead
State University in 1972, and received her Masters Degree in Social Work from
the University of Kentucky in 1976.  She worked for 28 years in Pike, Floyd,
and Johnson County for Mountain Comprehensive Care, and served several years
on the Kentucky State Social Work Licensure Board.  She was secretary to the
Big Sandy Chapter of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.
 
Funeral services were noon Saturday, Jan. 19, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel,
with Chris Rowland officiating.
 
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society by contacting
Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville.
