William C. Conley of Paintsville died in an accidental fall Tuesday, in
Martin County. Conley, 48, reportedly was working for the Ohio firm of First
Colony Construction Company on construction of a coal silo at Island Creek’s
Peblar Mine, near the Pike County line. A scaffolding on which he was working
collapsed, according to preliminary information, and Conley fell nearly 70
feet. The body was taken to the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville, No
information was available at press time concerning funeral arrangements.
   
Mr. Conley is survived by his wife, Mae, a son and daughter at home, Billy
and Becky Conley, and two married daughters, Mrs. Earl Lee (Pam) Castle and
Mrs. Joe (Pat) Porter. Two grandchildren also survive along with six
brothers, Bert Conley of Flat Gap, John Conley of Wittensville, Herschell
Conley of Alabama and Roy , Jim and Curtis Conley, all of Columbus, OH, and a
sister, Mrs. Kathryn Arms of Chesapeake, OH. The commander of the local
Veterans of Foreign Ward Club, Conley also served as president of the United
Mine Workers Association, district 30 and was part owner of the C and C
Newsstand in Paintsville.

William C. Conley died May 13 in Martin County at the age of 49 as the result
of a mining accident. Mr. Conley was the son of the late Smith and Grace
Preston Conley. He was born April 28, 1926 in Garth.
 
He was employed by the First Colony Construction Company, he was also
president of U.M.W.A. local 8364, and Commander of V.F.W.
 
Surviving, are his wife, Mae Stricklin Conley; a son, William Allen Conley of
Paintsville; 3 daughters, Patricia Mae Porter and Rebecca Susan Conley both
of Paintsville; and Pamela Colleen Castle of Lowmansville; one sister,
Katheren Arms of Chesapeake, OH; 6 brothers, Ray Conley and Curtis Conley of
Columbus, OH, James Conley of Washing C.H., OH; Hershell Conley of Athens,
OH, Bert Conley of Oil Springs and John Conley of Wittensville.
 
Gravesite rites were conducted by the V. F. W. with state service officer
John Williams participating on Friday, May 16 at 1 p.m. at the Mouth of Rush
Freewill Baptist Church in Nippa.
 
Reverends James Kelly Caudill and M. T. Womack officiated.
 
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville under the direction of
the Jones-Preston Funeral Home.
