Johnson County Sheriff, Cecil E. “Gene” Cyrus, 56, died Wednesday, March 18
in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
 
Mr. Cyrus was born June 13, 1935 in Lawrence County, the son of the late
Sheridan and Mary Jane Wilson Cyrus.
 
He was a member of the Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Paintsville
Masonic Lodge #381 F & AM, DAV, Paintsville York Rite, El Hasa Temple,
Kentucky Sheriff’s Association and the National Sheriff’s Association. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Ted Cyrus.
  
 Surviving are his wife, Ester
Gay Blevins Cyrus; one son, Cecil E. “Bucky” Cyrus, II of Paintsville, two
daughters, Jeania Gay Cyrus of Paintsville and Angela Michelle Cyrus of Hager
Hill; two brothers, Lindsey and Jim Cyrus, both of Columbus, OH; three
sisters, Ruby Runn and Louise Conley, both of Columbus, and Ruth Maynard of
Louisa; and two grandchildren.
 
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 21 in the gymnasium at Johnson
Central High School, with Revs. James Kelly Caudill, Paul W. Browning, and M.
T. Womack officiating.
 
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Bryan Fraley &
Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
 
Active pallbearers were Jim Cyrus, Mike Castle, Joe Chandler, Tom Iredale,
Pete Cantrell, Eulas Crace, Jack Hill and Vic Ferguson.
 
Honorary pallbearers were the Johnson County Sheriff deputies and friends.
