 WILLIAM G. DUKE
1942-2012

 
William G. (“Bill”) Duke of Staffordsville died November 19, 2012, at St.
Joseph Hospital In Lexington following a heart attack.
 
Bill was born on February 19, 1942, in Wayland. His parents were John W. and
Bonnie Back Duke.
 
He graduated from Letcher High School, Pikeville College (B.A., English), and
Morehead State University (M.Ed., Counseling). He completed additional
postgraduate work at Morehead State University and Auburn University. Bill
spent ten years as a teacher and counselor in the Johnson County school
system before working at the Carl D. Perkins Rehabilitation Center in Thelma
for twenty-nine years. For the last fourteen years of his tenure he served as
director of the facility.
  
After retirement, Bill served in the Office of the President of Big Sandy
Community and Technical College as Special Projects Coordinator. Throughout
his professional life, Bill served as mentor and counselor to countless
coworkers, students and other individuals. He continually championed the
efforts of others to better themselves through education and personal
initiative. He served on numerous local and statewide committees and boards.
He was a committed member and leader of First United Methodist Church in
Paintsville. Bill was an avid golfer and fisherman. Among his favorite days
were those spent on golf courses and fishing boats with family and beloved
friends. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rebecca, and their son,
Wesley W., of Lexington. He is also survived by six siblings: Betty Campbell,
of Jeremiah; John Duke, of Xenia, Ohio; Judy Breeding, of Blackey; Joe Duke,
of London; Fred Duke, of Hazard; and David Duke, of Blackey. His parents and
three brothers preceded him in death.
 
A Service of Christian Burial was held on November 24, 2012, at First United
Methodist Church in Paintsville with Ken Spurrier officiating.
 
Internment followed in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville.
