JOHN W. SPEARS

John W. Spears, 59, died February 28 in Lexington after suffering a
brief illness.

The Van Lear coal operator was born in Johnson County to Lucinda
Spears and the late Lewis Spears.

He was a member of the Van Lear Lodge 885, F & AM, 131 RAM 48
Knight Templar and the El Hasa Shrine of Ashland.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Clifton Spears; a daughter in
Lancaster, Pa., Mrs. Billie Spears Massey; one brother in Denver,
Marcus Spears; four sisters, Adeline Smith and Nola Mae Stepp of
Inez. Jean Fortner of Marysville, Ca., and Garnet Cox of
Staffordsville, as well as two grandhildren.

Services were held today (Wednesday) by the Rev. Mose Kitchen in
the Van Lear Freewill Baptist Church, with graveside rites under
the direction of the Van Lear Lodge 885 F & AM.

The Jones Preston Funeral Home supervised burial in the Highland
Memorial Park in Straffordsville.
