ALEXANDER, George Seldon

East Point Vet Found In Ohio Creek
The body of George Seldon Alexander, of East Point, veteran of World War II, was found on Monday, March 31, 1947, in Taylors Creek, near Harrison road, Cincinnati. According to the coroners’ report, he had been in the water since sometime in January 1947.  It was learned that a bag containing the belongings of Alexander was found on the side of the creek bank sometime ago, and his relatives at East Point were notified at that time.  A post mortem examination revealed no evidence of foul play. He had served almost four years in the Army during the last World War, and was last heard from in Minnesota in November 1946. The body was removed to the home of relatives at East Point by the Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 1, 1947. Surviving are his wife, one child, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock today, Thursday, April 3, 1947, at the grave by Rev. William Horn of Auxier. Paintsville Herald Thursday 04-03-1947
BURCHETT, Francis Marion

Jenkins Accident Francis Burchett One of Two to Lose Life Saturday
Francis Burchett, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Burchett of Jenkins, formerly of Van Lear, suffered fatal injuries in an automobile accident near Jenkins Saturday night as he and four other youths were returning from a basketball game between Jenkins and Virgie, at Virgie. Burchett died in a Jenkins hospital three hours after the accident which proved   fatal also to Joe Bevins, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren  Bevins of Jenkins.  Bevins was killed instantly. The driver of the car, Billy Colyer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Salyer, of Jenkins, suffered internal injuries and is in a serious condition.  A manslaughter warrant has been issued against him, according to information from Jenkins.  Others injured were Don Whitaker, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Whitaker, a skull fracture, condition critical, and George Reich, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michitti Reich, of Jenkins, internal injuries. According to reports from Jenkins the youths attended the game and were returning to Pikeville when the driver lost control of the vehicle on Shelby Mountain, near the Pike-Letcher County border, and plunged down a 100 foot embankment. Double funeral services were held for Burchett and Bevins at Jenkins Tuesday morning and the body of Burchett was returned to Johnson County for interment at Stambaugh, Reverend James of Jenkins officiating.   The youth’s survivors include his parents, two brothers, Willard and Edwin, both of Covington; four sisters, Mrs. Donald Nash of Waukegan, Ill., Jimmie Anne, Dona Sue and Nancy Lou, all at home. DAVIS, Charlie G.

Charlie G. Davis, 66, of Ashland, formerly of Paintsville, died unexpectedly at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon of a heart attack here shortly after arriving in the city for a visit with relatives. Mr. Davis, a retired miner and farmer, who had resided in Ashland for two and one-half years, was born March 19, 1880, in Lawrence County, a son of Amos and Rhoda Nickel Davis.  He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church, the IOOF Lodge of Paintsville, and was a veteran of the Spanish American War. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the John Steen Funeral Home in Ashland, with the Rev. Lawrence Colliver and the Rev. H. L. Moore officiating.  Burial was in the Rose Hill Burial Park at Ashland. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Amanda Davis; three sons, Verne C. Davis, Texas; Earl Davis, Williamson, W. Va., and Marcus Davis, Ashland; one daughter, Miss Dorothy Davis, at home; a half-brother, Thony Johnson, Paintsville, and three grandchildren. Paintsville Herald Thursday January 16, 1947

BOONS CAMP YOUTH DIED AT HOME JAN. 22
John Homer Mallett, 12 year old son of Mrs. Marie Mallett of Boons Camp, died Jan. 22 at his home following a short illness. Funeral services were held at the home Jan. 24, conducted by the Rev. Leonard Walters, and interment was in the family cemetery. PAINTSVILLE HERALD THURSDAY JAN 30, 1947
MEEK, Zephanniah

Z. Meek Funeral Held Friday Afternoon Catlettsburg -
Impressive funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Missionary Baptist Church, Catlettsburg, for Zephanniah Meek, 89-year-old retired marine engineer of Catlettsburg whose death occurred Wednesday at the home of a son, Calvin Meek Sr. of Short Street, with whom he resided. Rev. Dewey Jones, pastor of the church, officiated.  The song service was presented by the church choir.  Burial was in the Catlettsburg Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Clyde Hatfield, Garland Chaney, W.E. Fearing, Green Ross, J.J. Redwine and Ballard Wells. Mr. Meek was a native of Johnson County, Ky., and had been living in Catlettsburg since 1909. One son, Calvin Meek, Sr., and three brothers, Robert Meek, High Bridge, N.J., Shade Meek, Fullerton, Ky., and Isaac Meek of Offutt, Ky., survive. Paintsville Herald Thursday, January 30, 1947 (NOTE: Zephaniah Meek was born September 24, 1858 in Johnson County, son of William Meek and Sarah Leek.  Siblings who preceded him in death were Winfield Scott Meek and Juda Meek Boyd. He was married to Sarah V. Murphy and later to Elizabeth Osborne.

Mrs. Della N. O’Neal, 52, wife of Arzetus O’Neal, died at her home at Ashland Jan. 3 following an illness of two months. Mrs. O’Neal was a member and active worker of the Unity Baptist Church at Ashland and was superintendent of the Beginner’s Department of the Sunday School. She was born in Paintsville, Ky., August 30, 1894, a daughter of John Wesley and Caldona Martin Nelson, who now reside at West Van Lear, Ky. Funeral services were held Sunday, at the Unity Baptist Church with the Rev. L. H. Tipton, pastor, officiating.  Burial was made in the Rose Hill Burial Park at Ashland. Surviving are the husband; the parents; two sons, Clem Wesley O’Neal, and Ralph J. O’Neal, both of Ashland; two daughters, Mrs. Leslie A. Barker, and Miss Dorothy O’Neal, both of Ashland; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Stapleton, of Akron, Ohio; six brothers, Ernest and George B. Nelson, Louisa, Ky., Earl and Charles W. RUBY PARKER, 72, CLAIMED BY DEATH
Mr. Ruby Parker, 72, well known resident of the county, died Jan. 1, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lundy Justice, at Kerz, following a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Friday at the home with the Rev. Leonard Walters, and the Rev. Foster Grim officiating. Interment was in the Slone Cemetery. Mr. Parker is survided by several children. PICKLESIMER, Ulysses G.

Ulysses G. Picklesimer, 77, prominent farmer and citizen of Sitka, died in King's Daughters' Hospital at Ashland at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday after a brief illness. He had been residing for the past two months with a daughter, Mrs. Everett L. Rose, 3410 Blackburn Avenue, Ashland. Mr. Picklesimer was born in Johnson County, May 15, 1869, a son of Phillip and Eliza Salyer Picklesimer, both natives of Kentucky. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Volga. The body was removed to the Lazear Funeral Home and will be taken to the daughter's residence at 4 p.m. Thursday. The funeral party will leave Ashland at 8:30a.m. Friday for Cannon Chapel at Volga, Johnson County, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Oren Simmerman pastor, of the South Ashland Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be made in the family cemetery at Volga. Surviving are two sons, Leslie Picklesimer, Detroit, Mich., Hobart Picklesimer, Berea, Ky., one daughter, Mrs. Rose, Ashland, and a brother, R. W. Asa J. N. Reed Dies Jan. 17,1947 At Home Here
Death visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Arms, Jan. 17,1947,and took from them Mrs. Arms father, Mr. Asa J. N. Reed. Mr. Reed was a member of the United Baptist Church. He leaves the following children to mourn his passing, Mrs. Loa Ramey,of Beaver Creek, Mr. Jeff Reed and Noah Reed of Paintsville, Mr. Dockie Reed of Ohio, Ms. Oma McCarty of Manila. His wife,one son, Dewey and two daughters, Mrs. Verna Lemaster and Mrs. Anna Reed Baldwin preceded him in death several years ago. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday by Rev. SHEADER, Joseph

VAN LEAR MAN DIES FROM BULLET WOUND
Joseph Sheader, 70, a resident of Van Lear since 1940 and a retired safety engineer for the Consolidation Coal Company, at Jenkins, died Friday night from a self-inflicted bullet wound at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Mather, at Van Lear.  Ill health was blamed as the cause of his act members of the family said. Native of Durham County, England, Mr. Sheader came to this country in 1909, and settled at Ellsworth, Pa.  He moved to Kentucky in 1916 and accepted a position as bandmaster for the Consolidation Coal Company at Jenkins.  Except for eight years when he was safety engineer for the Elkhorn Company at Wayland, Mr. Sheader has been in continuous employment by the Consolidation. Upon the death of his wife in January, 1940, he moved to Van Lear and retired from active duty in August, 1941. He was well and favorably known throughout the Big Sandy Valley area  and was active in Masonic work.  He was a member of the Blue Lodge at Jenkins, and the India Consistory, Masons, at Covington, and was a member of the Van Lear Eastern Star. Funeral services were held at the Mayo Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon and  internment was in the Paintsville cemetery. Survivors in addition to his daughter are two sons, Joseph Henry Sheader of Denver, Colo., and Charles Frederick Sheader, of Nevada, Mo., and a brother, C. F. Sheader of Pittsburg, Pa. OBITUARY: Joseph Sheader, son of John and Emma Teresa Adams Sheader was born October 6, 1876 in Durham County, England.  He was married to Lizzie Ann Meek, January 20, 1895 who preceded him in death January 19, 1940. To this union were born three children, Joseph Henry, Ethel May and Charles Frederick. In England he was a faithful member of the Salvation Army.  After coming to this country he united with the Methodist Church and was active in church and lodge work until ill health forced him to retire. At the time of his death on Monday, January 20, he was 70 years, 3 months and 14 days old. Mr. Sheader was well known up and down the Big Sandy, was loved by all who knew him, and was known as "Pop" to his  many  friends.   He leaves to mourn his passing the following children, Joseph Henry Sheader, Lafayette, Colorado, Charles Frederick Sheader, Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Mrs. R. Sublett, 85, Dies AT Home Here Mrs. Rhuhemma Sublett, 85, died early Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Heber Ward, following a lengthy illness caused by the infirmities of the age.  Funeral services will be conducted at the home of Mrs. Ward at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, the Rev. C. D. Harsh officiating.  Interment will be in the old family cemetery near Paintsville. Mrs. Sublett was well and favorably known throughout the county and was beloved by all who knew her.  Her passing has caused deep sorrow among a host of relatives and friends. VANHOOSE, Emma (Dixon)

 Emma Dixon Van Hoose was born in Magoffin County, Kentucky, September the seventeenth eighteen hundred and sixty six.  She was the oldest, of ten children born to her father and mother, Isaac and Ella (May) Dixon.  Their being; Tobe, Alonza, Staffordsville, Ky.; Clark, Jackson, Ohio; Minnie, Guy, Wittensville, Ky.; Mrs. Warren Van Hoose, Frankfort, Ky., Don, Ashland, Ky., Mrs. James McKenzie, Wittensville, Ky., Mrs. Langley Preston, Witensville, Ky., Early in her childhood, Isaac and Ella, her father and mother moved to the headwaters of Rush Fork, Johnson County, Kentucky, where she spent her childhood and early womanhood. At the age of fourteen years, on December the twenty ninth, Eighteen Hundred and Eighty one, she was married to Marion Van Hoose, the son of another native mountain family, and to this union were born eight children, G. D., Mrs. Elro Van Hoose, Sally, Arascus, Hoy, Tutor Key, Madgie Stapleton, Paintsville and Minnie. G. D., Mrs. B. B. Vanhoose, Sally M. and Minnie preceded her in death some years ago. In the lane or road of life, Marion fell by the way of death and in Nineteen Hundred and eight she was married to Harry Van Hoose and to this union was born one child Mrs. Gladis Burchett. On December the twelfth, Nineteen Hundred and Twenty six he also passed by the way of death. Aunt Emma, as she was so dearly known by all her neighbors and friends was one of the country’s best mothers.  At he early age of seventeen she gave God her heart and was saved. Mrs. Esther Vest, 76, well known and beloved resident of Auxier, died Saturday afternoon at the Paintsville Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Auxier Methodist Church, Rev. Horne officiating and interment was in the Auxier cemetery. Mrs. Vest is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hime Dunagan of Auxier, and Mrs. Kate Stevens of Lexington, and a son, Jake Vest of Van Lear. PAINTSVILLE HERALD THURSDAY 1-16-1947

MARVIN BECULHEIMER DIES AT PORTSMOUTH
Marvin Beculheimer, 32, died at Mercy Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio, Sunday, Feb. 16.  Death was attributed to a stomach disorder. He was a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bechulheimer of Keaton, two brothers, Curtis of Keaton and Orlon of Columbus, Ohio, four sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Hagans, Pikeville, Mrs. Reva Gillam of Columbus, Ohio and Laura and Faye at home. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock at Kenton Church by Revs. Dallas Beculheimer, Hood Wallen and Emerson Collier. Interment was made in the family cemetery at Keaton. James Hayden Cantrell (Potsy) 70, died Sunday, February 16, 1947, at his home on West Third Street after a 6-week illness. He was the son of the late Elijah and Nancy Atkinson Cantrell of Win. He was a well known farmer and livestock dealer of this county. Surviving are his widow, Stella Cheek Cantrell, nine children,  Alkie Turner, Ashland, Mrs. Mae Rice, city,  and Mrs. June Holmes, Detroit, Mich., Walter, New Cumberland, Ohio, Ervin, Lexington, Ky., Earl, city, Clyde, Collista, Russell, Detroit, Mich., and Roy, a son by a former marriage who resides in Ashland. One sister and two brothers, Mrs. Ellen Spradlin, Barnetts Creek, and Tom and Doke of Win, also survive. Funeral services were held at Fish Trap on Tuesday. James Hyden Cantrell, the son of Elijah and Nancy Cantrell was born May 29, 1876 at Win, Johnson County, Ky. and departed this life February 16, 1947 at his home in Paintsville, Ky., at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 18 days. On February 20, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Stella Cheek of Win, Ky.  To this union was born eight children, He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three daughters and six sons, Mrs. Alkie Turner of Ashland, Mrs. Mae Rice of Paintsville and Mrs. June Holmes of Detroit, Roy of Ashland, Walter of New Cumberland, Ohio, Ervin of Lexington, Earl and Clyde of Paintsville and Russell of Detroit.  Sixteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ellen Spradlin of Barnetts Creek and two brothers, Thomas and Grover of Win. Also a host of relatives and friends. Jim was a kind and loving husband and father , a kind neighbor and friend to all. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, February 18, 1947 at 10:30 A. M., at the Fish Trap United Baptist Church at Fish Trap, by Rev. Lonza Reed, and Rev. Oscar McCarty, with burial at Fish Trap. Cerebral Hemorrhage Fatal to Mrs. Dawson
Funeral services were held Saturday for Mrs. Hetty Dawson, 63, who died from a cerebral hemorrhage on February 20 at her home at Thelma. She was the wife of Albert Dawson Surviving besides her husband, are three sons and two daughters, Earl of David, Cecil of Royalton, Ray, city, Mrs. Hubert Daniels, Prestonsburg, and Mrs. Frances Simpson, city.  She is survived by two brothers and three sisters; Green Price, Thelma, C.C. Price, Williamsport, Lula Holbrook, Kayport, W.Va., Hulda Sammons, Thelma, and Addie Butcher, Williamsport. Rev. Leonard Walters and Rev. Salvation Army Officer Died Last Night Mrs. Nola Jane Salyers Litteral, 64, an officer at the Ashland Salvation Army Citadel, died last night at 9:15 o’clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Greene 125 McKnight Street, West Fairview Ashland, following an illiness of six months. She was born March 14, 1882, in Johnson County, Ky, a daughter of the late Green and Lydia Rice Salyers. The body was removed to the Miller Funeral Home and will remain there. Friends may call after 6:30 p. m. today. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Woodrow Williams, West Fairview; four sons, George B. and Charles T. Litteral, Ashland; Richard P. Litteral, West Fairview, and Victor Litteral of Charleston, W. Va, two sisters, Mrs. Cora Spriggs, Garrett, Ky., and Mrs. Ruth Evans, Sherman, Texas; four brothers, Ben, Jes and William Salyers, St. Louis, Mo., and Hysell Salyers, Sherman, Texas, and five grandchildren. Rites For Mrs. Goldie M. Lyon Held Tuesday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Goldie Margaret Lyon, 48, formerly of Johnson County, wife of Lunda Lyon of Lucasville, Ohio, were held February 6 at the Beaver Valley Baptist Church at Waverly, Ohio. Mrs. Lyon died February 3 at the Mt. Logan sanatorium at Chillicothe where she had a patient since December 27, 1945. Rev. Sand Phillip, assisted by Rev. Lonnie Murray, was in charge of the funeral services. Mrs. Lyon was the daughter of Albert and Mellie Phillips Sparks of this county. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Howard, a daughter Miss Ruth Lyon, both at home and another daughter, Mrs. Edith Davis of Columbus, a sister, Mrs. Nova Harris of Winfield, and a brother, O. Hayes O'Brien, 32, son of Mrs. James F. O'Brien, died Feb. 21 in the Paintsville Clinic after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna O'Brien, one daughter, Joan, his mother, and three brother and two sisters, James, Harman and Richard, city, Mrs. Buren Castle and Mrs. Ted Hensley, city, three half-sisters, Mrs. Madge Compton, Mrs. Willard Conley and Mrs. Anna Bradley of Catlettsburg. His father preceded him in death five years ago. Funeral services were held Sunday at the home of his mother on Wood street by Rev. Ralph E. Webb. Burial was in the Town Cemetery. ROBERTS, Charlie

Charlie Roberts, 68, who died Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home here, will be held today (Thur.) at 2 o'clock at the Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Roberts suffered a stroke about one year ago from which he never recovered, although his condition was showing improvement until a few days before his death. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roberts and a member of an old and prominent family of Paintsville. He is survived by his wife, Louellen Van Hoose Roberts, four daughters and two sons, Mary Brownlee, Seamon, Ohio Eloise Childers, city, Mrs. Lorena Butcher, Williamsport, Pauline, at home, Earl, city and Thomas of Ironton, O.  Two sons preceded him in death, Henry, who was killed in France while serving in World War II and William who died in infancy. Zelcia Scarberry Dies Feb. 23
Zelcia Scarberry, 39, of Lowmansville died in a local hospital on Sunday, Feb. 23. She was the wife of Alfred Scarberry and the sister of Sherman Scarberry, city, who survive. She is survived also by seven children. Funeral services were held at the home on February 25. Burial was in the family cemetery at Lowmansville. Paintsville Herald 3-6-1947

Mrs. Marie Goings Shepherd, 66, sister of Mrs. M. C. Kirk, city, died on February 24 in Washington, D. C., after a long illness. Mrs. Shepherd, who was a veteran of World War I, had been a patient in veterans hospitals in Miami, St. Petersburg, and in Mt. Alto, Washington, D. C. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Cassady of Inez. Besides Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Shepherd is survived by one son, John S. Funeral services will be held at the Emmanuel Methodist Church today  for Dr. Henry G. Sowards, who died Monday evening in a Huntington hospital. Dr. Sowards was a former pastor of the Mayo Methodist Church, and was president of the John C.C. Mayo College here for many years.  He was well known throughout the Big Sandy Valley, and has many friends in Paintsville who will regret to learn of his death. Surviving besides his widow, are two sons, Chatham and John Buckingham Sowards of Huntington, W. Va., and one daughter, Mrs. Charles M. Wells, city. Interment will be in a Huntington cemetery. SERVICES TODAY FOR AGED WOMAN
Lou Walker, 85 years old, member of a well-known Johnson County family, died Sunday in her home at Happy Hollow. She had been seriously ill since receiving an injury in a fall several weeks ago. “Aunt Lou” as she was familiarly known, was the widow of the late J. F. Walker, who preceded her in death some twenty years ago. She was a sister of the De Mart Hager and James Hager of Hager Hill and Julia Jayne of Flat Gap all of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Walker was a former teacher in the Johnson County Schools, and a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Esta Walker, at home and several nieces and nephews. Wallace Ward, the eleven year old son of Mrs. Myrtle Ward of Williamsport, Kentucky, passed away on Saturday morning Feb. 1, at the Golden Rule Hospital, where he had been a patient for some several weeks. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home.  Reverend Charles Perry, cousin of the deceased and pastor of the Stone Methodist Church, officiated.  Reverend C. D. Harsh, pastor of the Mayo Memorial assisted. Pall bearers were Clarence Dutton, Homer, Hobert, and Denver Wells. The song service was prepared by members of the choir of the Wells Chapel. Was Widely Known Throughout Eastern Kentucky
Dr. Jacob Allen Wells, 66, President and Chief Surgeon of the Golden Rule Hospital, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, W. Va., at 8:30 a. m. on Feb. 22. Dr. Wells, who had been seriously ill since February 16 with a heart ailment, was removed to the Huntington Hospital where his condition was thought to be improving until about two hours before his death. Born at Boons Camp on May 5, 1880, he was the son of William Allen and Mary Hicks Wells.  He was graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1911, and was married to Lillie Belle James of Louisville in the same year. Dr. Wells was well known throughout Eastern Kentucky.  He served for many years as physician for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company, and was mine physician at Betsy Layne for a number of years.  In 1926 he returned to Paintsville as one of the founders and chief surgeons of the Golden Rule Hospital. His post graduate work was done in the Polyclinic Hospital in New York, N. Y. in 1926. Dr. Wells was a member of the Kentucky State and American Medical Association, the Gamma Delta Theta Medical Fraternity, and he was a past president of the Johnson County Medical Association. He was active in the local Kiwanis Club and was recently given the twenty-five-year service pin in Masonry. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lillie B. Wells, one daughter, Mrs. Richard W. Watters, Panama City, Fla., two sons, James D. and Robert Allen, four grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; Richard and Ed Wells, Pikeville, Gus and John L., city, Charles J., Williamsport, Mrs. Lizzie Walters, Chalet, W. Va., and Mrs. Malissa Perry, Stone, Ky. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p. m. Monday, February 24, at the Mayo Memorial Church with Rev. C. D. Harsh officiating. Masons of Paintsville Lodge No. 881 F. & A. M. acted as pallbearers and conducted the final rites.  Dr. Wells’ associates in the medical profession served as honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Alice Brown Williams, wife of John B. Williams, well-known Washington attorney, died Feb. 10 at her home in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Williams was an active member of Petworth Methodist Church for twenty-eight years, serving as president of the Women's Missionary Society for eight years.  Her husband is president of the Board of Trustees of the church. A native of Paintsville, Mrs. Williams moved to Catlettsburg, Kentucky, at an early age, and then later to Washington with her husband who was former Assistant United States Attorney. She is survived by her husband, John B. Williams; three daughters, Mrs. D. Stewart Patterson and Mrs. F. P. Hager, both of this city, and Mrs. Clarence E. Dawson, of Chevy Chase, Md.; one son, Carl B. Williams, of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Ava Hall, of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two brothers, George Brown, Beckley, W. Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 16, at Cottle, Morgan county, for Buford E. Williams, 41, who died suddenly Thursday afternoon. Mr. Williams was a driller in the oil business and had suffered an injury while at work.  He had been in the hospital for a few days, but had apparently recovered, and was on his way to his home from the hospital when he suffered an attack of pulmonary embolism.  Mr. Williams lived only 35 minutes after the attack. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Akers Williams, one daughter, Jane, and one son by a former marriage, his father, S. V. Williams, Middletown, Ohio, four sisters, one of whom is Mrs. Melissa Steele, city. A brother, Clarence, also in the oil business and a resident of Paintsville preceded him in death about one year ago. Interment was in the family cemetery at Cottle, Kentucky. James Garfield Castle, 84, a native of Johnson County, died at 1:30 p.m., March 20, in the Kings Daughters' Hospital.  He was residing with a daughter, Mrs. Walter Curnutte, 5244 Winchester Avenue, Ashland, Ky. Mr. Castle, whose wife, Mrs. Rebecca Castle, preceded him in death five years ago, had been a resident of Boyd County for 36 years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., March 22, at the West Catlettsburg Methodist Church with the Rev. G. W. Boll of Ironton, officiating, assisted by the Rev. B. F. Stapleton and the Rev. H. W. Whetsel.  Burial was in the Williams Cemetery. Mrs. Audrey Gibson Conley, wife of Luther Conley, owner of the Conley Bus Lines and sheriff of Magoffin County, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital from burns and shock received February 27, from a gas explosion at her home in Salyersville. Mrs. Conley was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Burnham Gibson of Magoffin County who survive. Surviving also besides her husband are two sons, Winfred and Woodford, at home, two stepchildren, Morris of Salyersville and Mrs. Dudley Green of Jackson, Ohio, also several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Lula Greene, age 61, formerly of Johnson County, died March 14, 1947 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie McKenzie, of Sunbury, Ohio.  Mrs. Greene was married to C. M. Thomas on January 29, 1900 who passed away on April 10, 1925.  She was later married to Henry C. Greene.  She was converted and baptized at the age of 21 and was a faithful member of the Enterprize Baptist Church until her death. Pvt. Mitchell McDowell Dies in Germany March 4 Funeral services were held Sunday at 10 a. m. at the Meally Christian Church for Pvt.  Mitchell McDowell, 26, who died in Germany on March 4. Pvt. McDowell entered military service on July 17, 1944. He re-enlisted in the Army 10 days after receiving his discharge in 1945, and had been in Germany for several months. John Meade,47, of Van Lear, died in a local hospital on March 6, 1947, after a two-week illness with a heart ailment. Mr. Meade came to Van Lear from Carter County 21 years ago,and had been an employee of the Consolidation Coal Company since that time. Local Man Dies Sunday of Injuries
Hit-an-Run Driver Sought In Death Of Veteran
Isaac Mollette, 25, son of Mrs. T. Mollette of Boons Camp, died in a local hospital Sunday morning, six hours after he was found on Two Mile Hill in a badly mangled condition. It was reported that Captain Hall of the State Highway Patrol, shortly before midnight Saturday, investigated a report that a man had been struck by an automobile about two miles north of Paintsville on Route 40.  Hall said he found Mollett lying in the road. It was stated by witnesses that Mollette had got out of a taxicab shortly before being struck by the car and was on his way to his home at Boons Camp. The victim had served in the U.S. Army four years, and had recently returned from overseas. Besides his mother, he is survived by eleven brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at the home at Boons Camp at two o'clock Tuesday.  Veterans of World War II conducted the final rites at the grave.  Interment was in the family cemetery. Sherman Rice, 79, Swamp Branch, KY., died at his home at 4:30, Saturday afternoon after an extended illness. Mr. Rice a retired farmer and merchant was born June 28, 1867, in Johnson Co.,, a son of Martin R. and Mary Hannah Rice.  He was a member of the Paintsville Masonic Lodge No. 381 and was a recently awarded the twenty-five year pin. The farm on which Mr. Rice has spent his entire lifetime is a part of the original farm homesteaded by his pioneer grandfather, John R. Rice, in 1815. In his early life he was quite active in the livestock business, timbering, wholesale and mercantile business.  He was also interested in mineral developments in this section.  In later years he operated a general store, in addition to actively managing the farm until the last few years of his life.  His health had been failing for several years and in June 1945, he underwent a major operation.  A second operation was performed in September 1946, from which he never fully recovered. He was interested in all civic activities and lent his aid to any worthwhile project in the community.  He was a trusted friend and neighbor and was admired and respected by all who knew him.  He had accepted the Lord as his own person savior which helped to sustain and strengthen him during the last months of his illness. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Emma Price; seven daughters, Mrs. Oscar Rice, Louisa, Katheryn Rice, at home; Mrs. Sherwood K. Fidler, Detroit, MI.; Mrs. James Lloyd Wilkins, Mt. Hope, WV., Mrs. Walter Maurice Baker, Lexington; Mrs. Wallis M. Bailey, Lexington; Mrs. Walter H. Meek, Paintsville; one son, Sherman Rice, Jr. at home and Mrs. Walter H. Mrs. Joe Roberts, 78, formerly of Boons Camp, died at her home at Region, in Pike county, on March 29 after an illness of one week. Robert Lee Skeens, 71, died Sunday, March 30, 1947, at his home in the Greentown section of Paintsville after a long illness.  He had been living in Paintsville since his retirement from the North East Coal Company of Thealka. “Uncle Bob’ as he was known to his friends, was born May 3, 1889 in Pike County. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. ARBIE SPEARS FORMER ARMY CAPTAIN BURIED APRIL 3.
Arbie Spears, 47, former U. S. Army captain, died March 31 in a veterans’ hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, where he was admitted on December 4, 1942. Mr. Spears was the son of Julius Spears of River, Ky. A veteran of World War I, He was wounded while fighting for the Meuse-Argonne Forest Campaign, and he failed to recover from wounds received in this campaign.  After receiving an honorable discharge on April 14, 1919, he was employed at Cleveland, Ohio, for a number of years, but ill health forced him to give up working entirely. Mr. Spears was a member of the Masonic Order, Lodge No. 689 of Cleveland, Ohio, where he remained a faithful member until his death. Besides his aged father, he is survived by three nephews and one niece.  His mother, Lorena Preston Spears, one brother and one sister have preceded him in death. Funeral services were held April 3 at 2 p. m. at the home of his father by Rev. Leonard Walters.  Final rites were conducted by members of the F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge of Paintsville. Albert Stambaugh, 52 of Stambaugh, better known as "Ab" died suddenly in a local hospital Monday, March 10. Mr. Stambaugh suffered a minor leg injury while working in the mines at Thealka a few days before his death. He was recovering from the injury when he suffered an attack of pulmonary embolism. He was the son of Sam and Lou Stapleton Stambaugh and a nephew of the late Samuel Stapleton of this city. He was a veteran of World War I. He was married to Murrah Preston in 1920, and to this union was born eight children, three of whom have preceded him in death. Surviving besides his widow, are five children, Dorothy May, Clyde, Sybl Jeanette, at home, Mrs. Betty Lou Burchett, Stambaugh, and Don C. of the U. S. Army, 5 sisters, Mrs. Sybil Thomas, Ashland, Mrs, Virgil Davis, Hitchins, Mrs. Pearl Burchett, Ulysses, Mrs. Hassie Burchett, and Mrs. Ellen Stambaugh, both of Stambaugh, and one brother, Ferrett of Stambaugh. Winfield F. Stambaugh Octogenarian Passes Saturday, March 29
Winfield F. Stambaugh, 82, of Stambaugh, Ky., died suddenly at his home on Saturday, March 29, of pneumonia.  He was the son of the late Samuel and Exer Murray Stambaugh of this county, and was a widely known and highly respected citizen.  His wife was Bessie Williams Stambaugh. Surviving are two sons, Roy, of Stambaugh and Ben F. of Independence, two half-brothers, Fred and Louis Stambaugh, one half-sister, Mrs. Kelly Rothwell, all of Stambaugh, also four grand children and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Delesia Sublett Van Hoose, 55, well-known Johnson County woman, died in a local hospital Saturday, a victim of tetanus.  Mrs. Van Hoose suffered a fractured vertebra and other injuries when hit by an automobile in Bridgeford on February 1 and on March 13, tetanus developed, causing her death. A warrant on a charge of manslaughter, was issued in Johnson County Court on Tuesday for Victor McKenzie, driver of the car. Mrs. Van Hoose was the daughter of the late Allen Thomas and Rhuhemma Sublett of Paintsville. She had been a member of the United Baptist Church since November 7, 1908. Mrs. Van Hoose lived an exemplary Christian life.  She was a kind and loving neighbor, and friend, and will be sadly missed in the community. She was married to Ivan Van Hoose on September 30, 1916.  Besides her husband, she leaves one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Carter of Springfield, Ohio and two grandsons, David Michael and Thomas William Carter. She is survived by five sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Ralph Williams, Mrs. Ransom Daniel, Mrs. Fred Baldwin, Mrs. Hebert Ward, Mrs. Walker Horn, all of Paintsville, Mat, Brookie, Monroe and Frank Sublett, all of Paintsville.  Two brothers Jay and Tandy preceded her in death. Ernest Walters, 66, formerly of Boons Camp, died Thursday, March 13, 1947, at his home in Genoa, W. Va., of a long illness from tuberculosis. Mr. Walters had lived at Boons Camp all his life except for a few months spent in Arizona during the past year. Cynthia Davis Auxier, 79, died at her home on Davis Branch Road, about twelve o’clock, Sunday night, April 5, 1947.  She had been ill for several months, but had shown improvement, and her death was unexpected. Mrs. Auxier was the daughter of the late James M. and Naomi Price Davis of this county, and was one of twelve children.  She was the widow of Warren D. Auxier who died in January 1942. A resident of the Davis Branch vicinity all he life, she was well known throughout the county, and she leaves many friends and relatives. Surviving are three sons, J. J. Auxier, Warren D. and Warden Auxier.  Four sisters also survive. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, April 9, 1947, at 2.  p.m. by Rev. S. C. Honecutt (Honeycutt). Stricken While Attending Church
Wade R. Bailey, 60, widely known and prominent farmer of Flat Gap, died suddenly Sunday afternoon. He was stricken while attending church and was taken to the home of a neighbor, Ison Salyer. A doctor was summoned, but he died a few hours after the attack. He is survived by his wife, Ollie Lyon Bailey, two daughters, Mrs. Lexie Skaggs, Barn Rock, and Mrs. Eva McKenzie, City; two sons, Buell M. Burlon Baldridge, 29, veteran of World War II, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Baldridge, of Stambaugh, died April 11, after an illness of more than two years. He recieved a medical discharge from the United States Army in 1945. Surviving are his parents, and six brothers and sisters, Thurman Baldridge, U. S. John Clay, 58, died after a short illness at his home at Van Lear on April 8,(1947). He had been employed by the Consolidation Coal Company at Van Lear for many years until ill health forced him to retire. He is survived by his wife, Vina Clay, and one son, Manuel Clay.  Another son was killed during the mine explosion at Van Lear in 1935. He was well known and loved by all who knew him.  He lived an honorable life, and was highly respected in his community.  He had faith and confidence in God. Isaac Slone, 75, a native of Johnson County, died at his home in Peebles, Ohio, on April 14, 1947.  Mr. Slone was born on March 1, 1882.  He served as Jailer of Johnson County from 1918-22.  He left Paintsville in 1925 and moved to Ashland, Ky., and then several years later to Peebles, Ohio, where he has resided for the last ten years.  Funeral services and burial were held today in Ashland, Ky. RITES FRIDAY FOR MRS. KATE RICE
82-Year Old Woman Passes Rites were held Friday for Mrs. Kate Powell Rice, 82, who died at the home of her son, Glenn Powell, on Second Street on May 14, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Rice, the daughter of James V. and Amanda Searest Colley, was born July 14, 1864 at Pioneer, Ohio. At the time of her death, she was 82 years and 10 months old. On March 18, 1895 (?), she was united in marriage to Thomas M. Powell. To this union were born the following children: Mildred Margaret, William Colley, Earle, and Glenn who survive. Three children, Elmer, Nina Temperance, and Thomas Maurice, Jr. preceded her in death. Mr. Powell passed away in September 1901. On December 31, 1910, she was married to L.G. Rice, who preceded her in death October 29, 1935. Mrs. Rice was converted at the age of 12, and joined the Methodist Church at Wellston, Ohio at the age of 16. Since that time, she remained a loyal and active member of the Methodist Church. She lived a happy and useful life. She loved the Savior and consistently stood for the cause of right. A kind and helpful neighbor, the whole community mourns her passing. Besides her children, Mrs. Rice is survived by four grandchildren, Kenneth B. Williams, Tommy Jean Hazelrigg, Betty Daniel, and Glenn Richard Powell. Two great grandchildren, James Kenneth Williams and jean Hazelrigg also survive. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Powell by Rev. C.D. Harsh, assisted by Rev. Ralph E. Webb. Burial was made in the family plot in Mayo Cemetery. 89 YEAR OLD CITIZEN PASSES
Rites were held Tuesday at the Mayo Church for Henry M. Stafford, 89, widely known businessman, who died May 10, at the Paintsville Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past several months. Mr. Stafford was born May 8, 1858, the son of William and Martha Hager Stafford.  He was married to Mary Jane Preston who preceded him in death some years ago.  An organizer of the Paintsville Bank and Trust Company, which is now the Second National Bank, and the Paintsville Grocery Company, Mr. Stafford was an influential businessman during his lifetime.  He was instrumental in effecting many civic improvements in the city of Paintsville, and through Mr. Stafford’s initiative and ability, many of the city’s best business buildings were constructed. He had been a member of the Methodist Church, South, since 19 years of age, and he took a great interest in the work of the Church. Surviving is one son, Dr. Donald G. Stafford, of Cincinnati, Ohio, one sister, Mrs. J. W. Auxier, city, and many other relatives. Funeral services were conducted by C.D. Harsh, pastor of the Mayo Memorial Church. Mrs. Arminta C. Wells, 86, of Johns Creek, died in a local hospital from pneumonia following a hip injury resulting from a fall in her home on May 20, 1947.  She is survived by four children:  two daughters, Mrs. Goldie Stevens of Huntington, W. Rev. Dennis Williams, 64, of Red Bush, died Saturday, May 24, in a local hospital after a two- day illness. He had been in ill health for several months and his condition grew critical after he suffered a stroke on Thursday. He is survived by his widow, Ona Williams, and three daughters and four sons, Mrs. Floyd Jackson, Mrs. Frank Pennington, and Mrs. Robert Caudill, all of Enon, Ohio, four sons, Ova of Dayton, Ohio, Sanford, City., Craton, Red Bush, and Perry, Greenup.  Three brothers and one sister also survive:  Albert Williams, Elna, Herbert Willliams, Indianapolis Ind. Leo Williams, Willamsburg, Ky., and Mrs. Ross Wheeler, Olive Hill. Rev. Williams was a member of the Bethel Church of United Baptists, and was ordained a minister in November 1916. Rev. Julius Castle, 50, a former resident of this county, died at his home at Auxier, June 13, following an illness of two years. Rev. Castle was one of the oldest employees of the North East Coal Company at Auxier, having been in their employ between twenty-five and thirty years. Surviving are his widow, Ethel Castle, four daughters and one son, one brother, Lawrence of this city, and one sister, Cora, of Catlettsburg. Funeral services were held at the Auxier Church Monday at 10:00 by several ministers of the Freewill Baptist Church.  Burial was made in the Auxier cemetery at Auxier. Sanford Marion Chandler, 76, a retired farmer of Ulysses, died Tuesday, June 24, at his home following an illness of two years. He was a son of the late William and Mary Wheeler Chandler and had been a member of the Church of God for 45 years. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Millie Bates Chandler; four daughters, Mrs. Edna Lykins of Dunbar, W.Va., Mrs. Eifie Johnson of Charleston, W. Va., Mrs. Dina George of Hamilton, Ohio, and Mrs. Emma Judd of Lowmansville, two sons, Virgil Chandler of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mitchell Chandler of Portamouth, Ohio, three sisters, Mrs. Emma Young and Mrs. Mina Boyd of Ashland, and Mrs. Manda Pack of Los Angeles, California, and two brothers, Frank Chandler of Salyersville, and Jasper chandler of Ulysses. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of God at Chestnut Grove with the Rev. J. W. Lykins and Rev. Henry Griffith officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery. Hiram George Dies June 14
Burial Made at Cyrus, Ky. Hiram George, 88, well-known resident of the county, died in a local hospital June 14.  For the past several years Mr. George had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Borders, city. Mr. George was stricken while in the courthouse about a week ago and was taken to the Paintsville Hospital where he remained until his death. Surviving are three children: two daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Borders and Mrs. Emma May, both of this city, and one son, Bradley of Ashland. John J. Lemaster, 83, died June 17, 1947, in a local hospital after an illness of over a year. Mr. Lemaster had made his home with his nephew, Payne Blanton, at Dwale, for the last several years. Joseph P. Litteral, 74, retired carpenter, West Fairview, died at 2:40 a. m. yesterday in the King's Daughters' Hospital following an illness of four months. Mr. Litteral was born in Magoffin County, Ky., a son of the late James W. Litteral and Eliza Pace Litteral. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p. m. at the Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. C. H. Hibshman officiating. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Daniel Stewart, George Litteral, William Greene, Richard Litteral, Woodrow Williams and Charles Litteral. Surviving are five sons: George B. and Charles T. Litteral, Ashland; Richard Litteral, West Fairview; Victor Litteral, Charleston, W. She was a daughter of the late David M. and Alice Pelphrey Fairchild. She was one of the community’s best women and had many relatives and friends in this section. Surviving, besides her husband, are one son, Huey E. Spradlin, and a daughter, Mrs. Julia Lee Hackworth, both of Bonanza; four brothers, Eli Fairchild of Bonanza, Johnny Fairchild of Collista, Newt and Paris Fairchild, both of Asa, Ky., and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Picklesimer, Ashland. Minnie Stambaugh, 70, died in a local hospital June 13, from the effects of burns received about six weeks ago. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Grim, at Nippa. Surviving are three children; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Lee Daniel, Lowmansville and Mrs. F.B. Grim, Nippa, one son, Elijah P. JUDGE E.E. TRIVETTE DIES JUNE 04
Judge Emery E. Trivette, 80, a former Kentucky assistant secretary of state and one of Pike County’s most prominent citizens, died June 04, 1947. A former merchant and steamboat operator on the Big Sandy and Ohio Rivers, Trivette had resided in Pike since boyhood, after his family moved there from his native North Carolina. Trivette left business a few years after the turn of the century.  He continued in public service with only a few interruptions until his death. A Republician, he was elected to two-terms as mayor of Pikeville, served two terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, served for years as chairman of the Pike County Republican Executive Committee, as postmaster of Pikeville from 1911 to 1915, as judge of the Pike County Court from 1918 to 1921, and for four years, 1923-1926, as assistant secretary of state. Trivette was named Pikeville police judge in 1933 and served in that office continuously until he died. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Pinson Trivette. Paintsville Herald Thursday 6-12-1947

Sarah Francis Daniels Walters, 83, died Thursday, June 26, 1947, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. B. Williams Wittensville.  She was the wife of the late James P. Walters. Surviving are eight children, Oscar Walters, Ashland, Proctor Walters, River, German Walters, Georges Creek, Vint Walters, Patrick, Jesse Walters, Ashland, Heiskel Walters, Ashland, Mrs. C. H. OBITUARY Sarah Francis Daniels Walters, born Monday, November 23, 1863, died at the age of 83 years, seven months and three days. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Lyon and Mrs. Lafe Walters, of Ashland, also one brother, H. A. Daniel of White House. She was married to James P. Walters on Thursday, April 15, 1880.  To this union were born nine children. Oscar Walters, Ashland, Proctor Walters, River, German Walters, Georges Creek, Vint Walters, Patrick, Jesse Walters, Ashland, Mrs. Cort Daniels, deceased, Mrs. C. H. Stambaugh, Paintsville, and Mrs. S. B. Williamson, Wittensville.  She leaves forty-nine grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren. She joined Friendship Church on Saturday, December 4, 1886, being in the service of the Lord, sixty-one years.  Her membership was transferred to the River Church at the time of organization.  She served as deaconess of River Church until the death of her husband, twenty- four years ago. The children, seeing mother’s end near at hand, questioned her as to her last words to them. She replied, “What more can I say that I have always said.  I have always been a praying mother, giving good advice to my children and grandchildren.  I have been a believer in secret prayer.  There is nothing for me to fear, only the sting of death.” Paintsville Herald Thursday 07-03-1947

Lonzy Webb, 66, of West Van Lear died in a local hospital Monday morning following an illness of two weeks. She was formerly connected with the Johnson County Health Department. John Wallace Blanton, 67, died at the home of Rev. Theodore Williams, near Manila, Monday night about 11:00. He had been in ill health for some time, but his condition was not considered serious. He was stricken suddenly while taking a walk Sunday evening. He was taken to the home of his brother- in-law, Rev. Williams, not being able to be moved to his own home. He is survived by his wife and several children, four of whom live in Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services were held at 11:00 today by the Rev. Thurman Ferguson, Foster Rigsby and Lonza Reed. Wesley Brown, 70, died Saturday at his home at Green Rock near Riceville after an illness of a year. Mr. Brown was a farmer and a well-known and prominent member of his community. Long Illness Takes Mother Of Seven
Addie Burke, 67, wife of Grant Burke of West Van Lear, died in a local hospital Thursday, July 3, following an illness of several months. Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lena Birchfield, Alfax, Ky, Mrs. Tessie Fields, City, four sons, Robert and Walter of Odds, Richard, Van Lear, Estill and William of West, Van Lear. One son, Heber Ray, was killed in an automobile accident near Prestonsburg last October. Two brothers and two sisters also survive; John Clifton, San Diego, CAl. Robert Clifton, Buffalo, N. Y., Mrs. Julia Spradlin, Cliff, and Mrs. Margaret Ennis, Miamisburg, Ohio. She leaves twenty-three-grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Rowland Castle Engineer Chief Dies Suddenly
Rowland R. Castle, 47, 322 West Tenth Avenue, Huntington, W. Va., chief of the operations and maintenance division of the Huntington District Corps of Engineers and former Army Colonel, died suddenly at his home Saturday, July 19. Mr. Castle, a member of the class of 1923 of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, was employed by the Huntington engineers office as an inspector in 1929. In July 1942, he was commissioned a major in the Army engineers.  He served at Kingsport, Tenn., on an explosive plant construction project from where he went to Terre Haute, and Evansville, Indiana, on similar projects. He was sent to the Philippines in 1945, where he was acting engineer in charge at Base M, the home base for the invasion of Japan.  He returned to the United States in May 1946, for release from active duty and returned to the engineers office July 1, 1946. He is survived by his parents, Fred W. and Emma R. Castle. Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 21, at the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary with the Rev. Rolla S. Kenaston, pastor of the Johnson Memorial, Church officiating. Burial followed in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Mr. Castle formerly lived in Paintsville and had many friends here. Laura B. Crum, 64, wife of Thomas Crum of Boons Camp died July 12 at her home after an illness of several years. She was a native of Johnson County and had lived at Boons Camp all her life, where she was a respected and well-liked member of the community.  She was married to Thomas Crum on Sept. 22, 1922. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Crum, and two children; one daughter, Mrs. Chloe Perry of Aflex, Ky., and one son, Jeff Perry of Boons Camp.  Also nine grandchildren. Wallace Fraley Killed Sunday By Motorcycle
Skull Fracture Causes Death Of C. & O. Employee
Wallace W. Fraley, 33, died Sunday, July 20, 1947 at 6 p.m. at a local hospital of injuries received two and one-half hours earlier in a motorcycle accident.  The accident occurred in Kings Addition on Route 40, when he was thrown from the motorcycle and (p)inned beneath it after being dragged several feet.  Death was caused by a skull fracture. Mr. Fraley, the son of the late Joe Fraley and Mary Johnson Fraley, of Thelma, was a member of a prominent Johnson County family.  He had been employed as a brakeman by the C&O Railway Company for the past several years. He was a member of the Elks, Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, and the Owl Club. Surviving are his widow, Mary Boyd Fraley, and four children, Shirley Ann, Laura Belle, James W., and Larry Lee, his mother, and one brother, James Fraley, all of Thelma. Funeral services were held at 2 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, July 22, 1947, by Revs. Leonard Walters, and L. T. Nephew of Local Man is River Victim
The body of Willard Edward Hood, 22, 1313 Caster Ave., Ashland, Ky, World War II veteran, nephew of Mr. O. C. Cooper of this city, who was drowned Tuesday, July 12, 1947, while swimming in the Ohio river near the Coal Grove bridge, was recovered by the rescue squad of the Ashland Police and Fire Department.  The victim was found near the scene of the tragedy.  He was identified by Homer Stevens and Roy Lambert. Boyd County Coroner, J. Fred Miller, said death was due to accidental drowning.  Bryan Morrow, a houseboat dweller, and Joe Woods, who was on a nearby street, reported seeing the youth drown.  The body was removed to the Miller Funeral Home.  Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Baptist Church, Westwood, and burial was in the Dixon Cemetery.  The Rev. Miss Martha F. Lemaster, 82, known as "Aunt Kitty" by all of her friends and relatives, died at her home at 8:00 P. M., July 31, 1947, following a long illness with cancer. She was the daughter of Francis P. and Mary E. Lemaster and was the youngest of a family of seven children all of whom preceded her in death several years ago. She as born at Barnetts Creek January 13, 1865, and spent her entire life at the old home on Tiny Branch. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for more than fifty years and was a fine Christian woman, a hard worker, and a great lover of her home. She had been away from her home only a few times, having been to Paintsville twice and out of the county only once, when attended a camp meeting in Magoffin County. Surviving are her nephew, Milton Lemaster, his wife, Stella, and one son, Robert, who were living with her at the time of her death and a host of relatives and friends. Noah S. Ross, 55, formerly of Flat Gap, passed away at his home in Waverly, Ohio, on July 26. His death was caused by a cerebral hemmorrhage which he suffered a few days prior to his death. Mr. Ross was the son of Harrison and Cora Ross of Flat Gap. He moved from Johnson County about seven years ago. Surviving are his wife, Eliza Travis and two sons, Stewart and Henry Clyde, all of Waverly, also four brothers and one sister, Mason, Mitchell and Dewey Ross all of Waverly, Glen Ross, Flat Gap, and Mrs. Della Sparks, Plain City, Ohio. Well-Known Woman Dies July 21 After Long Illness
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at the Christian Church for Mrs. Pauline Wheeler, 79, who died at 3 P. M. Monday afternoon at her home on Second Street. Mrs. Wheeler had been in ill health for the past few years but her condition became serious a few weeks ago, following an attack of pneumonia. She was born March 11, 1868, the daughter of Judge and Mrs. A. P. Cooper of Salyersville, but had been a resident of Paintsville for the past fifty years.  She was married to D. J. Wheeler in 1892.  Mr. Wheeler preceded her in death on October 11, 1937. Mrs. Wheeler had been a member of the Christian Church since early girlhood.  She was well known throughout Johnson and Magoffin Counties, and will be missed by many friends and relatives. Surviving are four sons, Orion and Hannibal, city, Clarence of Dayton, and Bruce of Richmond, Va., also fourteen grandchildren, one brother, J. H. Cooper, city, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Hale and Miss Allie Cooper of Cyrus, Ky.  Two daughters, Mrs. Eva Davis and Mrs. Minnie Peters preceded her in death. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. S. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning for Mrs. Rilda Wright Wheeler, 43, Ashland, formerly of Johnson County, who died Monday morning. Services were conducted at the Lazear Funeral Home by the Rev. C. E. Hawkins, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Pallbearers were P. P. Williams, Edgar P. McGlone, Dr. P. J. Evans, B. Death Takes Van Lear Man August 20
James Adams, 66, died at 3:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 20 at his home in Van Lear after a lingering illness of about a year. He had been an employee of the Consolidation Coal Company about 21 years, but had been forced to retire on account of health. He is survived by his wife Bleva Litteral Adams, and three sons, Raymond, James and Ray all of Van Lear. Also 2 brothers, Harry of West Van Lear and George who resides in the state of Vermont and one sister. Funeral services will be held at the home Friday at 10:00 a.m. by Rev. Mose Kitchen. Sidney Brown Dies In Auto Accident Aug. 8
Victim Was Veteran Of World War II From Johnson County
Sidney Brown, 22, Williamsburg, Ohio, son of Mr. And Mrs. J. Elbert Brown, former residents of Paintsville, and two other Williamsburg youths were killed August 8 when the automobile in which the three were riding sideswiped one bus and crashed into the front of another.  The accident occurred in Mt. Washington just beyond the eastern limits of Cincinnati.  The other victims were Kenneth Jordan and Norman Davis. Twenty-three persons of the 37 passengers on the Portsmouth bound Atlantic Greyhound bus were trapped when the sedan in which the young men were riding smashed the front of the bus with such force that the front door was jammed shut and the automobile crumpled under the bus as far as the windshield.  The driver, who was pinned beneath the wreckage, worked himself free and opened the emergency door in the rear of the bus. Twenty-two passengers on the first bus were shaken up when the car crashed against it.  The passengers were removed through the emergency exit and rescue workers jacked up the bus so that, nearly an hour after the accident, they were able to remove the young men’s bodies. Brown was a clerk in a Williamsburg store.  His father is manager of the Ashland Oil Refinery bulk plant at Williamsburg. Brown enlisted in the Army Air Forces at the local draft board when the family resided in Paintsville, and he became a Staff Sergeant while serving as gunner.  He was shot down over the Bioesti oil fields in Romania on his 45th mission and was a prisoner for two months. Rites To Be Held At East Point Friday
Vina Margaret Delong, 86, died at the home of her son Marion, at Odds, Ky., Tuesday night following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Sampson Delong and was originally from Martin County. She was a member of the Priest and Maynard families. She is survived by five children, two daughters; Mrs. Alice Osborne, East Point, and Rebecca Martin, Willow Run, Michigan; three sons; Marion, Odds, William, East Point, James, South Charleston, Ohio. Also two sisters; Mrs. Mary Smith, and Mrs. Lizzie Hale, both of Martin County, and one brother, Mr. Priest, of near Louisa. Funeral services will be held at the Christian Church at East Point at 10:00 a.m. Friday by the Rev. S.C. Honeycutt of Auxier, and Rev. J.H. Short of Meally. Native Of County Dies Monday
Mrs. Evelyn Meeks George, 78, a native of Johnson County, died Monday at her home in Catlettsburg. Mrs. George was the daughter of the late Nathan and Elizabeth Ann Pack Meeks.  She had been a resident of Catlettsburg for the past 30 years. Surviving are two sons, Carley Ward of George's Creek, Beecher Ward of Catlettsburg, two daughters, Mrs. Louella Ward of Nelsonville, O., and Miss Dutchie Ward of Catlettsburg, and two half-brothers, Thomas of Paintsville and Winfrey of Ashland. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning in Catlettsburg. Burial was in the Catlettsburg cemetery  Paintsville Herald Thursday, August 21, 1947 (NOTE: Evelyn was born in 1865.  Her first marriage was to F.M. Ward on December 10, 1890.  Her siblings were William B. Meek, Elizabeth Meek, Anne Meek and John Meek.  Her father, Nathan Meek, was first married to Columbia J. Webb, and had these children (Evelyn's half-siblings) Winfrey, Laura, Harrison, Jesse, Thomas, Asa, Albert and Jefferson.

Ballard Hyden Dies Suddenly August 1
Ballard Hyden, 64, of near Colista died very suddenly August 1, 1947, while  at work near his home. Mr. Hyden was apparently enjoying good health up until  the time he was stricken. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Webb Hyden, and eleven children. He is  survived by several brothers and sisters. Mr. Hyden was the son of the late Sam Hyden of Hager Hill, and he had  resided in the Hager Hill vicinity until the last few years. Funeral services were held at the Collista Baptist Church August 4, 1947 by  Rev. S.C. Honeycutt and Rev. Charles Lemaster. Burial was made in the Music Cemetery at Hager Hill. Mary Jennings Dies Monday
Rites were held August 6 at the United Baptist Church at Meally for Mrs. Mary Jennings, 53, who died Monday, August 4, 1947, in a local hospital following an operation.  Mrs. Jennings had been ill for several months.  She was the wife of Elbert Jennings of Meally. Surviving, besides her husband, are nine children:  Mrs. Flossie Preston, East McDowell, Mrs. Marie Childers, E. McDowell, Mrs. Sylvia Maynard, Meally, Mrs. Vina Preston, Georges Creek, Anna Ruth, at home, James P., Akron, Ohio, Ira, Meally, Elbert Jr., David, and Glenn at home. She is also survived by two brothers, Sam and Lafe Preston of Meally. Funeral services were in charge of Revs. Elzie Banks, F. F. Rigsby, Leonard Walters and Lonza Reed. Succumbs To Heart Attack
Robert Lee Miller, 54, veteran of World War I, died in his room at the Herald Hotel shortly after midnight August 30 from a heart attack. Mr. Miller had been suffering from a serious heart condition for some time and had a very severe attack about three weeks before his death. He had been a resident of Paintsville for about twenty years. He is survived by five children; Mrs. Dan Johnson, Pineville, Ky., Miss Lillian Miller and Joseph Miller of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mrs. Wallace Vyles, Wildwood, Tenn., also one daughter Jean of Paintsville. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church at 2:00 P.M., Monday by the Rev. C. W. Krebs and Rev. John N. Mostoller. Illness Fatal To Local Woman Rites Held Sunday For Johnson Citizen
Mrs. Nancy Jane Engle Newsom, 68, who resided on Route 23 south of the city limits of Paintsville, died Thursday, August 21, in a local hospital after a short illness. She had been active until a few days before her death. Mrs. Newsom was born in Perry County on December 18, the daughter of the late Frank and Polly Ann Engle. She was united in marriage to Jarvie Newsom on December 15, 1899, and to this union was born eleven children, five of whom preceded her in death. She had been a member of the Holiness Church since 1917, and she lived a faithful, exempliary Christian life. Surviving besides her husband, are three sons, Noah, Columbus, Ohio, Charley and George, city, Willie at home, and two daughters, Mrs. Anzie Copher, Owingsville, Ky., and Mrs. Kathleen May, city. Five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cedar Grove Church by Rev. Bud Wiley. NATIVE OF COUNTY DIES IN WEST
Mrs. Lucille Schrupp, daughter of Mrs. Pearl Baldridge and the late Eddie L. Baldridge, and former Paintsville resident, died at her home in Tucson, Arizona, August 7, (1947). Mrs. Schrupp was born Febuary 8, 1920.  She married Frederick William Schrupp in 1939 and moved to Dennison, Ohio, and then moved to Tucson in 1944. She is survived by her husband and 7-year old son, William Eddie Schrupp; her mother, Mrs. Pearl Baldridge, of Tucson, and a number of relatives in Kentucky and Ohio. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. George Ferguson, Pastor of St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church. Pallbearers were; Scott Garland, James Smith, Rand Bookman, Kenneth Freisner, Edward Cooley and Marvin Lyon.  Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson. Martha Selvage Dies August 4
Long Illness Takes Aged Denver Mother
Mrs. Martha Selvage, 89, died Monday, August 4, at the home of her son, Clay Selvage at Denver after a long illness. Mrs. Selvage was born April 27, 1858, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Parker Hitchcock who were early settlers of this County.  She had been a member of the United Baptist Church for 72 years. Surviving are six sons, H. B., Jesse, Alford, Add, and Clay, all of Denver and Cal of Van Lear; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Spradlin, Barnetts Creek, Mrs. Rose Spradlin, Denver, and Mrs. Malta Ratliff, Denver.  Also surviving are one brother, Ben Hitchcock, Trimble Gap, fifty-six grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were the grandsons of Mrs. Selvage.  They were Alvin Spradlin, Clark Ratliff, Bill Selvage, Lester Selvage, Ivan Selvage and Vinson Selvage. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the home of Clay Selvage by Rev. Hamblin May and Rev. Foster Riggsby. Burial was made in the family cemetery. ATTACK FATAL TO PROMINENT CITIZEN
Ernest Carrol (Dick) Turner, died suddenly Saturday at his home on Turner Branch of a heart attack. He was one of Johnson County's most respected citizens, and a member of a prominent family in this locality. Mr. Turner had been in ill health for several months, but his death is unexpected and came as a shock to his family and friends. He was the son of John Wesley and Frances Lyon Turner, and was born Febuary 15, 1875. He had been a builder and contractor since early manhood, and had constructed many of the homes and business buildings in Paintsville. Mr. Turner was married to Mollie Rice about 51 years ago and to this union was born three children. After his wife's death on October 31, 1930, he was later married to Flossie Tackett, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Faye Campbell and Mrs. Dixie Ray Chatfield, both of Catlettsburg, and Mrs. Frances Schlunegar of Tulsa, Oklahoma, also one brother, Ray Turner of Turner Branch. Lou Walker, 85 years old, member of a well-known Johnson County family, died Sunday in her home at Happy Hollow. She had been seriously ill since receiving an injury in a fall several weeks ago. “Aunt Lou” as she was familiarly known, was the widow of the late J. F. Walker, who preceded her in death some twenty years ago. She was a sister of the De Mart Hager and James Hager of Hager Hill and Julia Jayne of Flat Gap all of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Walker was a former teacher in the Johnson County Schools, and a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Esta Walker, at home and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Barbara Blanton, 18, was found dead on the Highway near her home at Staffordsville at 8 o'clock Friday evening, by her husband, Quentin Blanton. Guy Preston, coroner, said she was apparently killed by a hit-and-run-driver, She received a fractured skull and numerous other bruises. Besides her husband, she is survived by an infant child, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Smith Blevins, Staffordsville, and two brothers, Edward and Chalmer Blevins. Funeral services were held September 8 at 10 o'clock at the Old Union Baptist Church at Staffordsville by Rev. Lonza Reed  and Rev. J. C. Sparks. William H. Caudill Dies Sept. 3
William H. Caudill, 65, prominent real estate broker and native of Johnson County, died suddenly Wednesday morning in the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Ashland. Mr. Caudill was the son of the late Rev. Louis F. Caudill, a Baptist minister, and Cynthia Corley Caudill.  He had been a teacher in the Magoffin County Schools and had resided in Ashland for the past 25 years.  He was president of the Exchange Land and Realty Association of Ashland at the time of his death.  Mr. Caudill was past president of the Ashland Board of Realtors and had engaged in the real estate business for twelve years Before that time he was engaged in oil and gas development.   He had been secretary treasure of the Boyd County Farm Loan Association. For several years, and was a member of the Unity Baptist Church, where he had been a teacher of the Men’s Bible Class for ten years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jeanette Fairchild Caudill, two daughters, Mrs. Evalena Salyer, Ashland, and Mrs. Faye Furbee of South Charleston, W. Va., two sons, Rexford R. Caudill and Victor D. Caudill of Ashland, who were associated with their father in business; four brothers, Edward R. Baxter and Charles Baxter, all of Salyersville and Rev. Henry Davis After suffering and extended illness, 90 year-old Henry Davis passed away on September 25 in a local rest home. Pneumonia Fatal To Local Woman
Mrs. Talia H. Roberts, 75, well known and respected member of one of Johnson County's most prominent families, died of bronchial pneumonia at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James H. Trimble, at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 14.  She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Roberts was born at Staffordsville October, 7, 1871, the daughter of Cynthia and James Stafford.  She was one of a family of fourteen children, two girls and twelve boys. She was married to Hiram Roberts December 20, 1889, who preceded her in death thirty-two years ago.  Nine children were born to this union.  Two sons, Clarence C. and Sherman R. died in infancy and one daughter, Shella died at the age of 17. Mrs. Roberts lived a devoted Christian life.  She was converted and baptised at the age of 17 and joined the White House Christian Church at Mud Lick.  Later her membership was moved to the First Christian Church here. She is survived by six children; three daughters, Mrs. James H. Trimble, Mrs. Walter Kennard, and Mrs. Harry Johnson; three sons, Marvin Roberts, W. E. Roberts, and J. E. Mr. Z. C. Ward, 85, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hopkins Preston, at 9:00 P.M., Friday, September 26, following an extended illness. Mr. Ward, a retired farmer and merchant was a life-long resident of Johnson County.  He was a member of one of the County’s oldest families and was one of its most respected and well-known citizens.  He had been a member of the Oil Springs Methodist Church for more than fifty years.  He was married to Miss Margaret Catherine Litz of East Point, who preceded him in death about twenty years ago. He is survived by his three children, two daughters, Mrs. Hopkins Preston, city, and Miss Stella Ward, Buckhannon, W. Va., one son, Arch Ward, Portsmouth, Ohio.  Also one brother, Will Ward of Ashland, Ky. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at Oil Springs, Monday at 2:00 P. M. by Rev. C. W. Truck Accident Fatal To Local Man
Wm. Russell Woods World War II Veteran  Dies September 27
Mr. William Russell Woods, 24, of East Point, son of Mr. John E. Woods and the late Gertrude Fraley Woods, was fatally injured Saturday afternoon, September 27, in a truck accident on Route 460 near Staffordsville. It is reported that the truck in which he was hauling gravel for the Midway Service Company overturned and pinned him underneath after it was crowded off the road by another truck. He was a World War II veteran having entered the U.S. Army in May 1943.  He received his discharge in November 1945 after participating in several campaigns in the European Theater. He is survived by his wife, Geneva May Blevins, and two small children, his father, John E. Woods, city, one brother, Charles, city, and one sister, Mrs. Loretta Spears, city. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. Dan Fraley and Dewey Fraley at the home of his father in King Addition, Tuesday at 2;00 pm.  Burial was in the O'Bryan family cemetery near Staffordsville. Everett Blevins, 51, veteran of World War I, died at 3:45 p.m., October 6, at the home of his mother, Mrs. Flora May Dale, following an illness of several months. He had been a patient in the Veterans’ Hospital in Huntington for some time and had returned home on Friday before his death. He was the son of the late John Elliott Blevins.  He is survived by his mother; one son, John Blevins, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at 10:00 Thurs. morning at the Freewill Baptist Church by the Revs. Scott Castle and Jess Tacket. Body of Local Boy Among War Dead To Arrive in U. S.
The body of T-5 Ora Conley, son of Eddie Conley of Flat Gap, has been returned to the United States, together with the bodies of 61 Kentuckians, aboard the U. S. Army transport Honda Knott from the South Pacific. The caskets were the first of tens of thousands, which will stream continuously into the once bustling port of embarkation in months to come.  Covered with flags, they were moved from the dock to a huge white and silver building, where they will be segrated and placed on waiting funeral trains for transportation to distribution centers throughout the country. Kentucky relatives of the dead received telegrams telling them the bodies are being shipped to redistribution centers in Atlanta, Memphis, and Columbus, and should arrive Soon in their hometowns. Mrs. Polly M. Holbrook, 79, wife of George Holbrook, died suddenly at the home of her son, J. H. Holbrook, near Circleville, Ohio, Sunday, October 26, 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook were former residents of Johnson County, but had made their home in Ohio for the past twenty-two years. Car Truck Wreck Takes Life Of Clay Hyden
Accident Occurs Wednesday Morning At Cannel Coal Gap
Henry Clay Hyden, 43, died Wednesday morning of a crushed chest and other injuries received when the car in which he was riding collided with a truck of the Caudill Fruit Company driven by Ernest Preston of Meally. The accident occurred about 6:30 a. m. about one half mile north of Cannel Coal Gap on Route 23.  According to Wiley Hall, sheriff, who investigated the accident shortly after it occurred, the victim was traveling in a Dodge coupe on the right side of the highway.  He stated that the steering gear of Hyden’s car was smashed from the impact. Preston, it was reported, reloaded the produce of the fruit company on another truck and proceeded on his route, unaware that Hyden had died while being removed to a local hospital. Mr. Hyden was a life long resident of the East Point community.  He was the son of the late Sam Hyden and was a employee of the Ritter Lumber Company of Van Lear where he had started when the fatal accident occurred. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Bays Hyden, one daughter, Billy Jean, three brothers, Harry and Taylor Hyden of Auxier, Ed of East Point, and three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Delong, Mrs. John T. Delong and Mrs. Allie Reed, all of East Point.  A brother, Ballard Hyden, preceded him in death on August 1 of this year. Judge Pauley Dies At Pikeville Oct. 4
Judge Hi Pauley, 63, recognized as Pike County's best known citizen and a long-time Republican leader, died at his home at Pikeville October 4 following a heart attack suffered early Thursday. Judge Pauley served from 1911 to 1913 as sheriff of Pike County after which he served 16 years as county treasurer. His county judgements covered the periods 1928 to 1932 and 1941 to 1945. He served as mayor of Pikeville from 1937 to 1941. Surviving are one son, two daughters and two sisters. Funeral services were held Monday from the Pikeville Methodist Church. Was Well Known Resident of County Green Rice, 75, well known resident of the county, died October 20, at his home at Oil Springs. He was born in Jennies Creek on April 29, 1872, the son of James and Nancy Salyer Rice, and was a member of a family of ten children. He was married to Cora A. Davis who preceded him in death two years ago. Mr. Rice had been a member of the United Baptist Church at Fish Trap for more than 40 years. Surviving are nine children, Mrs. Erie Wheeler, Mrs. Lillie Wheeler, Mrs. Rouie Caudill, Alva, Frank, Grant, Charlie, Roy and Johnny, also four sisters, Mrs. Sarah K. Picklesimer, Mrs. Mary Litteral, Mrs. Addie Collins. Twenty-four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Wednesday, October 22, by Rev. Manasseh Stapleton, 65, well known resident of the county died at 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 17, 1947, at the home of his son, William at Barnetts Creek.  Mr. Stapleton had been ill for three years and had been confined to his bed the past year.  He was a widely known and respected citizen of this county. Dr. E. P.WALTERS DIES OCTOBER 20 AT PIKEVILLE
HEART ATTACK FATAL TO NATIVE OF COUNTY
Dr. Edgar Poe Walters, 67, prominent Pikeville physican and native of Johnson County, died at his home in Pikeville on October 20 (1947) four hours after he suffered a heart attack. Dr. Walters had practiced at Flat Gap and Charley in Lawrence County before going to Pikeville. He was born Sept. 3, 1880, a few miles from Paintsville, the son of the late Winfred and Elizabeth Preston Walters.  Hw was one of fifteen children, five of whom survive. As a youth, Dr. Walters attended school in Johnson County,  In 1902 he went to Washington State where he worked for a short time and then returned to work with the surveying crew which planned the town of Jenkins and the coal operation there. He later went to Medical College and was graduated from Louisville School of Medicine in 1907. He was married on July 2, 1904 to Miss Ada Walker of Johnson County. Dr. Walters was a member of the Baptist Church, the Masonic Order and a charter member of the Pikeville Kiwanis Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Elmon P. Walters and F. Bruce Walters, both of Pikeville and H. Grant Walters of Lexington; and a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Stout of Jefferson, Md. Surviving brothers and sisters include;  Dr. W. J. Walters, Pikeville, U. S. Walters, Offutt, S. W. Walters, Malta, Ohio, Mrs. Exer Preston, Ephrata, Wash., and Mrs. Susie Preston, city. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. O.B. Stroke Fatal To Harvey Williams Rites Wednesday For Hager Hill Man
Harvey Williams, 54, one of the leading mechanics of this city, died at his home at Hager Hill Monday morning October 27, 1947, following a stroke. Mr. Williams had fallen from the roof of a new garage he was constructing and suffered injuries from which he had not recovered when he was stricken with cerebal emolism. He was born in Johnson County, the son of Wince Williams and Georgann Davis Williams.  He had lived in Paintsville for a number of years and had been connected with the automobile industry here for about twenty-five years. He is survived by his wife, May Horne Williams, and three children; two daughters, Okie Lee and Ruth Lanelle, and one son, Paul Winston.  Also surviving are his aged mother, who was unable to attend the funeral services, and several brothers and sisters.  One brother, David, preceded him in death in February of this year (1947). Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ralph E. Webb and Rev. Lonza Reed at the First United Baptist Church at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday, October 29, 1947. Car Plunges Over Hillside On Flat Gap Road
Mrs. Nila Potter Williams, 44, of Flat Gap was killed at 5 p.m. Sunday when the car in which she was driving plunged over an embankment into a creek on the Red Bush - Flat Gap Road about a mile from her home. She was pinned beneath the car and death was instantaneous. Mrs. Williams was the wife of Preston Williams of Williams Grocery Company, city. She was born February 1, 1903, and was a native of West Virginia. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Mrs. Walter Kennard, Jr., city, three sons, Forrest Vaughn, Robert Palge, and William Preston, two grandchildren, Frank Preston and Carolyn Sue Kennard, and one brother and three sisters, Dennie Potter of Ironton, Ohio, Mrs. W. Mr. Witten was a former resident of this county.  He was married to Laura Rice in 1896 and to this union were born three sons, Everett, Earl, and Edgar of Wurtland and one daughter, Mrs. Louis Stephans, also of Wurtland.  He was the brother of Fane and Chester Witten of Sitka and Mrs. Mary Emily Rice of Stambaugh. Eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Church of Christ and Funeral services were held in that church at Raceland, KY., with the Rev. Ned Gaylon officiating. Dr. William R. Castle
Rites Held Monday For Noted Physician Was Prominent Civic Leader
Dr. William Rogers Castle, 65, prominent Johnson County physician and surgeon passed away November 29 at 12:30 A. M., at the Golden Rule Hospital after an illness of three years. Dr. Castle was born January 7, 1882, a son of the late Jefferson and Mary Meadows Castle of Nippa, Ky. He received his early education in the schools here after which he was employed by the railroad, and as a teacher in the Johnson schools. Later he attended the University of Louisville's school of Medicine, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1907.  The grade he made on the examination given by the State Medical Board was the highest ever recorded at that time and remained so for many years. He then returned to Johnson County where he entered the practice of medicine at Nippa, Ky., later moving to Offutt, Ky., where he resided for sixteen years.  He later moved to Paintsville in 1923.  In 1925, with the assistance of Doctors John P. Wells, G. V. Daniel, D. H. Daniel, and J. A. Wells, he helped to organize the Golden Rule Hospital.  After completing a postgraduate course at the New York Polyclinic Hospital, he continued to practice until about three years ago when he was forced to retire because of ill health. He was a prominent civic leader, served as city councilman, was a Fellow of the American Medical Association, and a member of the United Baptist Church of this city. Until he ceased to practice, Dr. Castle was so loyal to his profession that he never failed to answer calls, day or night.  Through the valleys and over the hills, rain or snow, he wended his way to relieve afflicted sufferers. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F. F. Rigsby, assisted by Rev. Clarence Krebs, at the United Baptist Church December 1 at 2:00 P.M. and interment was in the Castle Cemetery at Nippa, Ky. The active pallbearers were: Messrs J. H. Pelphrey, Bruce Wiley, Dennis Van Hoose, Verne Horne, Otto Baldridge, Byron Van Hoose, Bill Meade, Jonah Castle, Claude Van Hoose and Ollie Cooper. Honorary pallbearers were: Monroe Wheeler, Martin Wheeler, F. S. Van Hoose, Ray Turner, Franklin Chandler, H. G. Hazelrigg, J. W. Turner, and the Johnson County Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Johnson Castle, a daughter, Mrs. Eunice Phelps, three sisters, Mrs. C. B. Van Hoose of Nippa, Ky., Mrs. Martha Meade, Nippa, Ky., and Mrs. Beth Wiley of Betsy Layne, Ky., and a host of relatives and friends.  His three brothers, Thomas, James, and Israel Castle preceded him in death. Albert Preston Childers, 83, better known to his friends as Press, died at his home on Davis Branch about 10:30 P. M. Wednesday, November 19. Mr. Childers was born in Lawrence County June 13, 1864, the son of Pressly and Pricie Stafford Childers and was one of a large family of children most of whom have proceeded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Rhuemma Davis Childers, and two sons, J. R. and P. H. Childers both of Paintsville.  Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Milt Allen of Catlettsburg, Ky. ALBERT PRESTON CHILDERS Albert Preston Childers (better known as Press Childers) was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, January 13, 1865.  At the age of 82 years, 10 months and 6 days, he passed into “The Great Beyond” November 19, 1947.  In the stillness of the night that Long Sleep fell upon him quickly and peacefully.  Press was a son of Russell and Pricy Stafford Childers.  Four brothers nad one sister preceded him in death.  Two sisters:  Mrs. Milt Allen, Catlettsburg, and Mrs. Pricy Davis, Hellier, Ky. Survive. The mother of these children died when Press was 8 years old.  A few years later his father died.  At the age of 14, he came to live with his Uncle, Tip Childers of Thelma, Kentucky, where he lived until he married. On January 6, 1892 he married Rheu Hemma Davis and to them were born three children: Jay Russell and Press Honshell both of Paintsville who survive him.  Kit Elmon died in infancy.  Six grandchildren and one great- grandchild also survive him. Press had always been an industrious man.  He spent most of his time as a farmer and a carpenter having worked for the Consolidation Coal Co., more than fifteen years.  Although a hard worker, Press never saved much of his life’s earnings but better than that he built for himself a name and a character so nearly perfect that no man was ever heard to speak evil of him.  “A good name is better than riches.”  It seems he chose this for his life’s work.  A few hours before his passing, he told his wife his conscience was clear.  Death seemed to have lost its sting for him. The tempernment of Press and Hemma was so much alike it enabled them to see as one, thereby, bringing such peace and happiness into their home that only a few couples have ever enjoyed.  HOME was “SWEET HOME” to them. MILLARD COOK BURIED AT INEZ NOVEMBER 24
Millard Cook of Whitman, W. Va., died at his home November 23, 1947, following a heart attack. Funeral services were held at his home November 24, and the body was then moved to the Ward Cemetery at Inez, Ky., for burial. Mr. Cook was an employee of The Island Creek Coal Company for the past eight years and was a member of the Whilman No. 20 Union Church, Whitman W. Va., for eleven months. He was the son of Rev. William Cook, who preceded him in death, and Sarah Scalf Cook of Banner, Ky. Joseph H. Daniel Dies November 20,1947
Joseph H. Daniel, 80, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Levi Johnson, at Thelma, Thursday, November 20,1947,at 12:10 P.M. after a long illness. Mr. Daniel had been a lifelong member of the United Baptist Church, and he was a widely known and respected citizen. Surviving are seven children, three sons and four daughters, William Daniel,of  Richardson; E. B. Daniel, of Auxier; Frank Daniel of East Point; Mrs. J. G. Nowlin, Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Montana Travis, Catlettsburg; Mrs. Virgie Blanton, City; and Mrs. Johnson. He is survived also by one brother and two sisters: W. E. Fred Kinner, 70, father of E. W. Kinner, editor of the Licking Valley Courier, West Liberty, died November 4, at West Liberty following an illness of two months. Mr. Kinner was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County.  He served two terms on the Lawrence County Board of Education and was a member of the Louisa Methodist Church. He moved from this county to Mouth Card about 35 years ago Where he practiced his profession until two years ago when his health failed. The body was returned to the Meade Memorial High School auditorium on Sunday morning where services were held at 11 a.m. by the Rev. H.M. Hernon. DEATH TAKES AGED MEALLY WOMAN
Mrs. Nancy Jane Lilly of Meally died Tuesday, November 4, after a lingering illness. She was 79 years of age. In 1872 Mrs. Lilly was married to Bud Webb who preceded her in death. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Arch Jordan, Williamson, W.Va., Mrs. Walter Freeman, Huntington, W.Va., and W.L. Webb, city. One son, Hobart Webb, preceded her in death. In 1915 she was married to Bud Lilly who also survives. Besides her immediate family she leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her passing. Mrs. Lilly had been a member of the Church of Christ for the past fifty years and she remained faithful until death. Funeral services were conducted at the Meally Church of Christ on November 6, by Rev. J.H. Short. Interment was made in the family cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home. Homer McKenzie, 54, an employee of the Northeast Coal Company for many years, died at his home at Auxier Wednesday, November 12, following an extended illness. Funeral Services To Be Conducted Saturday Lucinda Meek, 76, wife of Thomas L. Meek died at her home at 23 Depot Road at 10:30 am, Wednesday, November 12.  Mrs. Meek had been ill for some time. Mrs. Meek was a member of a well-known Johnson County Family, the daughter of John and Jane Stevens Estepp.  For a number of years she had been a member of the Methodist Church. Isaac McDaniel Osborn, 72, died November 17, at his home at Sitka after a short illness. He was the son of Thomas and Katie Brown Osborn who preceded him in death several years ago. Carl Preston, 71, Shoots Wife And Kills Self
Tragedy Occurs Tuesday Night In Huntington
Carl Preston 71, native of Johnson County, shot and critically wounded his wife Tuesday night at their home in Huntington, and then killed himself with a 38 calibre revolver, it was reported. The Prestons had been residing with their two daughters, Mrs. Chris Ward and Mrs. Justice Bailey, and their son-in-law, Mr. Bailey.  Mrs. Preston’s condition was too grave to permit questioning immediately, but the Chief of Detectives, Azel T. Bryant of Huntington said he was informed Preston had been in failing health and was despondent. Mrs. Preston, 69, was taken to Memorial Hospital where emergency surgery was performed in an effort to save her life.  The police said she was shot in the chest, and that Preston then shot himself in the chest. Preston’s body was found in the doorway of a second floor bedroom, and Mrs. Preston was on the bed.  Mrs. Ward was in another part of the house and the Bailey’s had retired at the time of the shooting.  Mr. Bailey summoned the police. Mrs. Preston is the sister of Dr. Avery Lewis, a former resident of this county who died Thursday, November 20, Mr. Preston is the brother of Frank Preston of Tutor Key., Forest Preston of Lexington, and E. Mrs. Ida Blackburn Robinson, 63, wife of Shird Robinson of Whitaker died Wednesday morning at the Paintsville Hospital of a stomach ailment from which she had been suffering for many years. She was a native of Floyd County and was the daughter of the late Mrs. And Mrs. Rufus Blackburn of the Little Paint community. A member of a widely known family, Mrs. Robinson was held in high esteem by all who knew her, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.  She was a member of the Methodist Church. Logan Salyer, 84, Dies November 9
Logan Salyer, 84, died Sunday, November 9, 1947, at the home of his son, Tom Salyer, at Flat Gap. Mr. Salyer was the son of Calvin and Evelyn Helton Salyer.  He was married to Caroline Hamilton who preceded him in death, and to this union was born four children; Mrs. Cleveland Daniel, Louisa, Isom, Flat Gap, and Callie and Mary who preceded him in death. Mr. Salyers was later married to Delia Blanton who survives.  He is also survived by two brothers, N. N. Salyer of Salyersville, N. P. Salyer of Indiana, two sisters, Helen Johnson and Betty Stanley of Prestonsburg, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, November 11, 1947, at 1 P.M. by Revs. Bruce Daniel, William Luster and Quirl Thomas.  Burial was made in the family cemetery near the home.
OBITUARY Logan Salyer, who departed this life, Sunday, November 9, 1947, was born June 22, 1863 the son of Colvin and Evelyn Helton Salyer.  At the time of his death, he was 84 years, 4 months and 17 days old.  In 1880 he was married to Caroline Hamilton, who preceded him in death in 1906.  To this union was born four children; Mrs. Cleveland Daniel, Louisa, Isom of Flat Gap, Callie and Mary, Collie preceded him in death by two years and Mary died in infancy. In 1908 he was married to Delia Blanton who survives.  He leaves to mourn his passing two brothers, N. N. Salyer of Salyersville, N.P. Salyer of Indiana; two sisters Helen Johnson and Betty Stanley of Prestonsburg; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. To his neighbors and family, he was affectionately called Uncle Loge or Gran.  He is sadly missed by the young and the old who were fortunate enough to know him.  To him belong the words: “He lived in a house by the side of the road and was friend to man.” To those of us who witnessed the last courageous days of patient suffering, we can but think of Bryant’s words: “He wrapped the drapery of his couch about him and lay down to pleasant dreams.” Funeral services were held at home Tuesday, November 11, 1947, at 1 P.M. by Revs. Bruce Daniel, Wm. James S. Short,74,  former Johnson County man died Saturday [Nov.21 1947] at his home in Louisa following an illness of four months, he was a retired railroader. A son of Silas and Elizabeth Powers Short, Mr. Short was born in Johnson County and moved to Louisa twenty-seven years ago. He was employed for many years as a construction worker on the Norfolk and Western Railway. He was a member of the Methodist Church for forty-three years. Mr. Short was married in 1901 to Jennie Brown, who survives. He is survived by two sons; James and Ollie J. Short of Louisa; one sister, Mrs. Jerry Hall of Meally, and one brother, Grant Short of Meally. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home with the Rev. J. C. Hagar officiating. Former Johnson Resident Killed In Slate Fall
Walter VanHoose, 37, former resident of Johnson County, was fatally injured in a slate fall at Wayland, Ky., Tuesday, November 25. Mr. VanHoose was assisting mine foreman and was removing a piece of slate, the key rock to a large piece above it, when it fell completely covering him. He was taken to the Beaver Valley Hospital at Martin, where he died about 7:00 p.m. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry VanHoose of Fort Gay, W. Va., and was married to the former Mabel Castle, of Thealka, Ky., all of whom survive. Also surviving are several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church at Wayland at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, after which the body will be brought here for burial at the Wells-Rockingham cemetery under the direction of the auspices of the local American Legion. Mary Borders Auxier, 72, died December 9 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Preston, at Allen, Kentucky, after an extended illness. Mrs. Auxier was born and reared near Boarders Chapel but had resided at Pritchard, W.Va., for many years until she became ill. She was the widow of Nat. L. Auxier of this county who died in a local hospital on June 5 of this year.  She was a member of the Methodist Church. MINE ACCIDENT FATAL TO HALLACK BLAIR
Hallack Blair, 35, was killed instantly Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in a fall of rock in the Johnson mine at the mouth of Teass Branch. Mr. Blair was crushed above the waist in the accident, and several men were required to remove the rock from the body. He is survived by his wife. Mrs. Blanton And Infant Son Die In Ohio
Wife Of Orville Blanton Was Native of County
Mrs. Orville Blanton, 40, formerly of Oil Springs, died at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on December 2, following the birth of a son, Stephen Russell.  The infant died of a brain hemorrhage apparently suffered during delivery. Mrs. Blanton resided at Washington, C. H. Ohio, where she moved with her husband about five years ago. The birth was believed by physicians to be a normal one.  After delivery when Mrs. Blanton was being taken back to her room she was suddenly stricken with shock, physicians said, and she died immediately. The infant was Mrs. Blanton's second child.  Her firstborn son died a few years ago in a tragic accident in the front yard of the family home when he became entangled in a rope swing. Surviving Mrs. Blanton are her husband, her mother, Mrs. Susan Stone, a brother, Ollie Stone, both of Washington, C.H., and five sisters, Mrs. Clinton Salyer, Lucasville, Ohio, Mrs. Ben Patrick, Jeffersonville, Ohio, Mrs. Graham Harris, Okanagen, Washinton, Mrs. Floyd Day, Seattle, Washinton, and Mrs. Oscar Salyer, Washington, C.H.  Youth's Death Investigated By Local Officers The body of Vernon B. (Junior) Castle, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bosier Castle of Thealka, was recovered from the Big Sandy River Friday near the mouth of Buffalo Creek. The youth had been missing for twelve days. He was last seen at the Riverside Club about 12:30 a.m. on the day of his disappearance. Witnesses testified that he ran over the bank towards the river following a disturbance at the roadhouse. A companion of the victim stated that a large number of people had congregated at the club and that he had purchased whiskey there prior to Castle's disappearance. Castle's parents suspecting foul play, after his failure to return home contacted local law officials and several searches were made of the locality and the river was dragged several times in search of the body. The body was discovered on the opposite side of the river from the Riverside Club where it floated to the surface. The remains were removed to the Jones Funeral Home for examination by county officials. It was then taken to the Paintsville Hospital for x-ray and later taken to a pathologist in Huntington. No report has been recieved from the findings. Funeral services were held at the Thealka Church, Sunday at 10 a.m. by Rev. Claude Preston and Rev. Charlie Bailey. Mrs. Irvin (Alafair) Clay Victim of Sunday Morning Accident A truck accident on Route 40 near Meally Sunday morning caused the death of Mrs. Irvin Clay of River and serious injuries to Mr. Clay and their daughter, Miss Herma Clay. The accident occured about 9:30 A.M. when the family, riding in the cab of the truck, were en route to visit a married daughter at Tutor Key.  The truck skidded and over-turned when Mr. Clay, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle when he attempted to avoid a collision with another car. Mrs. Clay died about five hours later in a local hospital of a punctured lung and several broken ribs. Mr. Clay sustained an injured shoulder and bruises, and Miss Clay suffered internal injuries and brusies. They are patients in a local hospital. Mrs. Clay who was 46 years old, was the former Alafair Daniel, daughter of Bascom Daniel of this county. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs, Vonda McKenzie and Mrs, Gladys Stapleton, both of Tutor Key and Miss Herma Clay at home. OBITUARY Alafiar Daniel Clay was born on Wiley Branch, Kentucky, on November 9 1901, the daughter of Mr. Luther Daniel and Sacillar Preston Daniel, members of two of the county's most prominent families. She attended school at Wiley Branch and lived with her parents until her marriage. On April 22 1918, she was united in marriage to Irvin Clay, also a member of a leading Johnson County family, To this union were born two daughters, Vonda Clay McKenzie of Tutor Key and Herma Clay, who made her home with her parents. Alafair was one of the community's best loved and religious mothers, having joined the Unvel (?) Baptist Church at River, Ky., in 1921.  For twenty-six years she lived the life of a good Christian; so that when the Great Emancipator called for her on December 9, 1947, she said, "I am ready". From childhood Alafair was a friendly and lovely person with a pleasing smile for everyone. She was always ready to help anyone whenever it was in her power to do so. Besides her husband and two daughters, she is survived by her parents and seven sisters, Mrs. Matilda Preston, Golda Daniel and Gladys Stapleton, twins, Mrs. Mary Meek, Mrs. Amanda Stapleton, Mrs. Gustava Price, and Mrs. Roberta Van Hoose.  One brother, Jay Daniel.  Two sisters, Mrs. Vina Preston and Mrs. May Meek, proceded her in death. JOSEPH O. COULSON DIES DECEMBER 13.
Joseph O. Coulson, 86, widely known decorator, died at his home at West Van Lear Saturday morning, December 13, (1947) from the effects of a stroke suffered the earlier part of October. Mr. Coulson, a native of Canada, came to this section from Detroit, Mich., and for many years practiced his profession of interior decorating in and around Paintsville. He is survived by his wife, Alma Duncan Coulson, and two sons, John Charles and Russell, both at home, one step-son, Arlo Wallace of Xenia, Ohio, and one step-daughter, Mrs. Nell Shepard, Louisville. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt at the Christian Church at West Van Lear at 2:00 P.M., Monday December 15.  Burial was in the family lot in the West Van Lear Cemetery. Crum Twin Succumbs At Boons Camp
Jimmie Crum, Jr., infant son of James Crum of Boons Camp died at the home of his parents on December 6.  He was two months and 29 days old and was one of twins. Heart Ailment Fatal  To Father Of 14 James Fraley, 68, died suddenly of a heart condition from which he had suffered for years, at his home in King Addition Thursday morning, December 18, 1947. Mr. Fraley was born in Lawrence County, but had for many years been a resident of this county, where he had been employed in the mines. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Newcomb Fraley, and fourteen children, Ruel, Delmar, Mrs. Gladys Melvin, Mrs. Opal Daniel, and Mrs. Lizzie Gillum of this city.  Mrs. Gypsy Lyons of Springfield, Ohio, Rev. Dewey Fraley of Auxier, Mrs. Adeline Collinsworth, New Cumberland, Ohio, Robert, Herschell , George, Homer, James and Katherine at home.  Also surviving are four brothers, Tom and Millard of this city, Dock of Weeksbury, Fred of Cattlettsburg, three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie O’Bryan and Mrs. Maude Boyd of this city, and Mrs. Isabel Spencer of Plain City, Ohio. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 20, 1947, at 1:30 by Revs. C. C. Hall, Scott Castle and Ralph E. Webb. Funeral Services Held Sunday At Methodist Church Kala Meade, 70, wife of Riggs Meade, died at her home at Oil Springs, Friday evening, December 5, 1947. Mrs. Meade was the daughter of the late Wiley and Rebecca Pace Litteral and was a lifelong resident of the community in which she died. She is survived by her invalid husband and seven children; six daughters, Mrs. Jenny Lind Nickells,Kenova, W. Va., Mrs. Mamie Blanton, Mrs. Anna Webb, Mrs. Fanny Belle Blanton, all of Oil Springs, Mrs. Marie Castle of this city. Mrs. Ruth Kirkly, Baltimore,Maryland, and one son, Mr. Frank Meade of Oil Springs. Also surviving are three brothers, Luther and Luster Litteral of Oil Springs, C. Litteral of Charleston,W.Va., and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Salyer of Oil Springs. Twenty-two grandchildren also survive her. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church at Oil Springs by Revs. Collins,Bandy,and Helton. Burial was in the Litteral cemetary at Oil Springs. Mona L. Preston Dies December 1
Wounds Fatal To County Woman
Mrs. Mona Lewis Preston, 69, formerly of Johnson County died on December 1 in the Huntington Memorial Hospital, Huntington, of gunshot wounds inflicted by her husband, Carl Preston, on November 25.  Mr. Preston killed himself at the same time. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Chris Ward and Mrs. Justice Bailey of Huntington, also one sister and six brothers, Mrs. Erma Harman, Jenkins, Willie Lewis, Allegheny, Ky., Hilliary, Staffordsville, Walter, Williamsport, Eli, Tomahawk, Frank and Robie of Boones Camp.  A brother, Dr. Avery Lewis died in a Lexington hospital on November 30. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ralph Webb at 11 A. M. on Thursday, December 4, in the Meade Memorial High School gym at Williamsport. Special singing was rendered by the Williams quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Williams, Rev. Ralph Webb and Ransom Daniel. Burial was made in the Lewis cemetery at Williamsport. William Epp Ratliff, 62, of Ashland, retired contractor and builder, died suddenly Saturday, December 13, 1947, in an Ashland restaurant of a heart attack. Mr. Ratliff was a native of Pike County.  He was married early in manhood to Miss Mary Kirk, daughter of Judge Jim Kirk of Martin County.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Henry Ratliff, Pike County, three daughters, Mrs. D. E. Wheeler, and Mrs. David S. Miranda, Ashland, and Mrs. Henry C. Kelly, Jr., Ivyton, two sons, Darwin Ratliff, Ashland and William V. Ratliff, Ashland. SEVEN MEMBERS OF RICE FAMILY DIE IN FIRE IN OHIO
ONE ESCAPES IN APARTMENT HOUSE EXPLOSION
An Explosion and fire in an apartment house in Greenwich, Ohio, Sunday, December 07 1947. took the lives of seven members of a former Johnson Co., family, the victims were Warnie Rice, 48, his wife, Stella May Rice, and five of their children, Donald, 18, Martha, 16, Robert, 14, Joe, 06, and Roy 04.  They were former resident of the Jennies Creek locality. It was reported that the family was sleeping in a second story apartment when an explosion followed by fire occurred in the kitchen about 1 o’clock Sunday morning causing instant death to all the victims except Rice and one son, Joe, who died a few hours later in a Willard, Ohio Hospital. Escaping without injury was one son, Dewey, 21, who was sleeping with Everett Ratliff, a half-brother of Mr. Rice in another wing of the house. Mr. Rice was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rice of this county.  He was a railroad employee of Greenwich, Mrs. Rice was the daughter of Sherman May, formerly of Prestonsburg.  She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Albert Ratliff of Greenwich and Mrs. Warren Ratlliff of West Portsmouth, Ohio. Carl Setser, 31, Dies December 26 Carl Setser, 31, of Auxier died in a Huntington hospital Friday, December 26 at 11:00 A. M. following an illness of less than a month. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Setser, who reside near Odds, Ky. Mrs. Setser had worked in the mines practically all his life, having been employed by the Northeast Coal Company from the time he was old enough to work, and remained with them until the mine closed. He afterwards obtained employment at David, Ky., with the Princess Elkhorn Coal Company and was working for them when he died.  He is survived by his wife, Sarah Butcher Setser, and three children, his parents and several brothers and sisters.Funeral services were conducted by S. Sud Stafford, 70 Dies December 2
Rites Held Here Wednesday
Sud Stafford, the son of the late George Stafford and Susan Stafford Mahan, died at 4:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 2, 1947 following an illness of several years. Mr. Stafford made his home with his brother Frank Stafford, who preceded him in death two and one half years ago, after which he remained in the home under the care of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Stafford. He was converted when a young man and lived a consistent Christian life.  He entered his membership with the Paintsville Freewill Baptist Church about ten years ago and was a faithful member until his death. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Anna Ward, Mrs. Green Salyer, and Mrs. May Pelphrey of this city; three brothers, Carl and Proctor of this city, W. M. of Cincinnati, Ohio, and  one-half brother Ballard of Camargo. Funeral Services were conducted by the Rev. Walter L. Hooper and Rev. C. C. Hall at the Freewill Baptist Church, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 3.  Burial was in the Town Cemetery. Paintsville Herald Thursday 12-4-1947

Rites Friday For Rev. Aaron Stepp 73-year Old Martin County Man Passes
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, for Rev. Aaron Stepp, 73, of Inez who died Tuesday, December 16 in St Mary's Hospital in Huntington where he had been a patient for the past three weeks. He was a lifelong resident of Martin County where he owned considerable real estate. He had been a minister of the Baptist Church for about forty years. surviving are his wife, Rebecca Maynard Stepp, and seven children, Mrs. Charity Stewart, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Martha Jane Collier, Beauty, Mrs. Mary Belle Bragg, Jacksonville, Fla., James, Williamson, W. Va., Nilburn, Leonard, and Landrum of Inez. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Golden Ramey of Wayne, W. Va., at the Bethel Church on Coldwater Creek three miles out of Inez on graded road. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, December 21, by Revs. Fraley and Hooper for Walter Gordon Van Hoose, the 20-month-old son of Joe and Flossie Wilcox Van Hoose. The child died in a local hospital following a days illness of bronchial pneumonia. He is survived by his parents and several brothers and sister. Burial was in the Thealka cemetery.
