DIES OF HEART
AILMENT
John Arms, 57,
died Saturday, April 5, 1947, at his home in Paintsville of a heart
ailment.
He was an employee of the C & O Railway Company. Surviving are his
wife, Frankie Arms, and five children and tow brothers.
Funeral
services were held at the home on Tuesday, April 8, 1947, by Rev. Scott

Cynthia Davis
Auxier, 79, died at her home on Davis Branch Road, about twelve
o’clock,
Sunday night, April 5, 1947. She had been ill for several months,
but had shown improvement, and her death was unexpected. Mrs. Auxier
was
the daughter of the late James M. and Naomi Price Davis of this county,
and was one of twelve children. She was the widow of Warren D.
Auxier
who died in January 1942. A resident of the Davis Branch vicinity all
he
life, she was well known throughout the county, and she leaves many
friends
and relatives. Surviving are three sons, J. J. Auxier, Warren D. and
Warden
Auxier. Four sisters also survive. Funeral services were held at
the home on Wednesday, April 9, 1947, at 2. p.m. by Rev. S. C.
Honecutt
(Honeycutt). Burial was in the family cemetery. Paintsville Herald

BAILEY, Wade R.

Stricken While
Attending Church
Wade R. Bailey,
60, widely known and prominent farmer of Flat Gap, died suddenly Sunday
afternoon. He was stricken while attending church and was taken to the
home of a neighbor, Ison Salyer. A doctor was summoned, but he died a
few
hours after the attack. He is survived by his wife, Ollie Lyon Bailey,
two daughters, Mrs. Lexie Skaggs, Barn Rock, and Mrs. Eva McKenzie,
City;
two sons, Buell M. Bailey, Louisville, and Orville Bailey of Flat Gap,
two sisters, Mrs. Virgie Ferguson and Mrs. Mary Lyon both of Blaine;
five
brothers, Vinson and Harrison of Portsmouth, Ohio, Charles, Barn Rock,
William, Leon, Ky., Sanford and Thomas of Keaton. Funeral services were
held at the Enterprise Baptist Church at Flat Gap, Monday, April 21, at

Is Fatal To Veteran
Burlon Baldridge,
29, veteran of World War II, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Baldridge, of
Stambaugh, died April 11, after an illness of more than two years. He
recieved
a medical discharge from the United States Army in 1945. Surviving are
his parents, and six brothers and sisters, Thurman Baldridge, U. S.
Army;
Douglas, Otis, Edna Pauline, and Phylis Irene, at home, and Mrs. Audrey
Jean Pierce, City. Funeral services were held Sunday at Stambaugh by
Rev.
Moses Kitchen and Rev. Don The body was interred in the Burial was in
the

TO SHORT ILLNESS
John Clay, 58,
died after a short illness at his home at Van Lear on April 8,(1947).
He
had been employed by the Consolidation Coal Company at Van Lear for
many
years until ill health forced him to retire. He is survived by his
wife,
Vina Clay, and one son, Manuel Clay. Another son was killed
during
the mine explosion at Van Lear in 1935. Funeral services will be held
this
afternoon at the house by Rev. S. C. Honeycutt. Interment will be in
the

OBITUARY John
Clay was born April 7, 1889 and died April 8, 1947 at the age of 58
years.
He had been an employee of the Consolidation Coal Company for many
years,
but had been in ill health for some time, and had recently suffered a
stroke
from which he never recovered. He was well known and loved by all who
knew
him. He lived an honorable life, and was highly respected in his
community. He had faith and confidence in God. He leaves, besides
his wife Vina Clay, one son, Manuel Clay, one sister, Leona Pigg of
Louisa
and two grandchildren, James Franklin Clay and John Livingston Clay,
and
a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the

Mrs. Mollie King
Colvin, of Volga, was found dead Tuesday, April 1, while sitting in her
chair in the kitchen of her home. She was about 68 years of age. Mrs.
Colvin
was the widow of James Colvin and is survived by two brothers, Floyd
King
and John King, both of Volga. Interment was in the Staffordsville
Cemetery

Mrs. Betty
Hibbitts,
74, died at her home at Odds on April 10, after an illness of more than
one year. She was the widow of Logan Hibbitts, and the sister of
Blaine Clark, Commonwealth's Attorney of this district. The daughter of
Samuel and Susan Wells Clark, Mrs. Hibbitts was a member of an old and
well known family. She had resided in the Johns Creek vicinity
all
her life. Surviving are four brothers and four sisters, Morgan Clark,
and
Logan Clark, both of Odds; J.B. Clark, Inez; Emsy Clark, Drumwright,
Okla.;
Mrs. Leona Spears, Pomona, Calif.; Mrs. Della Salyers, Naples, Ky.;
Mrs.
Julia Spears, Hunnewell, Ky.; and Mrs. Noke Richmond, Odds. Funeral
services
were held Saturday by Rev. William Horn of Auxier. Burial was in the
family

Preston, 62, wife of Paris Preston, died Saturday afternoon at her home
at Williamsport. Surviving besides her husband are five children

Williamsport; and Jo Imogene, at home; also one brother and five

and Mrs Exer Holbrook, all of Thelma; and Mrs. Hettie Daniel, Nippa.
Funeral
services were held at the Baptist Church, Bob's Branch, on Monday,
April
14 1947, at 10 a.m. Burial was in the Family Cemetery.

Isaac Slone Dies
April 14
Isaac Slone,
75, a native of Johnson County, died at his home in Peebles, Ohio, on
April
14, 1947. Mr. Slone was born on March 1, 1882. He served as
Jailer of Johnson County from 1918-22. He left Paintsville in
1925
and moved to Ashland, Ky., and then several years later to Peebles,
Ohio,
where he has resided for the last ten years. Funeral services and
burial were held today in Ashland, Ky. He is survived by his wife,
Alice
Pennington Slone, and four children , Audie, Greenup, Ky., Marvel, New
Boston, Ohio, Oscar, Peebles, Ohio, and Mrs. Rebecca Picklesimer, Wes
Van
Lear. Three brothers and two sisters; J.M. Slone, City, Proctor

Kerz, Marion Slone, Portsmouth, Ohio, Cyntha Adams, Catawba, Ohio, and
Margaret Dixon, Wittensville, Ky., eighteen grandchildren and eight
great

Harry Spradlin,
60, died Tuesday morning in the Paintsville Hospital after an illness
of
several months. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00, Friday at
the Freewill Baptist Church at Riceville with the Rev. Con Burke
officicating.
Burial will be at the family cemetery in Riceville. Surviving are his
wife,
Mrs. Florence Williams Spradlin and three children: Mrs. Dewey Salyers,
Switzer, W. Va., J.B. Spradlin, Bristol, Va., and Benny Spradlin whose
address is not known; his mother, Mrs. Emma Spradlin, Riceville; three
sisters, Mrs. Fred Williams, Mrs. Johnny Collins both of Riceville and
Mrs. Arthur Reed, Oil Springs; one brother, Dord Spradlin, Stirrat, W.

87 Dies April 18
Mrs. William
J. Walters, 87, of Offutt died Friday evening, April 18, 1947, at the
home
of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Burke, in Ashland, following an illness of
three
weeks. She was a daughter of the late William and Catherine Stookey
Day,
and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral services
were
conducted Sunday, April 20, 1947, at the Miller Funeral Home, in
Ashland.
Burial was made in the Frankfort Cemetery at Frankfort, Ohio. Surviving
are the husband, the daughter and three grandchildren, Bill and Neil
Burke,
and Mrs. William Clower, all of Ashland; also one great grandchild.
