85-Year Old Woman Dies At White House
Mrs. Vashty Boyd, 85, died at her home at White House at 8:30 p.m.
Friday, April 9, following an illness of several
years. She is survived by seven children: Four
daughters, Mrs. Dan Bellomy, Ashland, Mrs. Millard Lemaster,
Huntington, Mrs. Rebecca Hall, California, and Mrs. James Blevins,
Beaver Creek; three sons, Jonathan and John Boyd of this county and
Major Boyd of Washington. Also surviving are one sister and two
brothers. Funeral services were held at the home of her
son, Jonathan, at 2:00 P. M., Saturday, April 10 by Rev. Leonard

CAUDILL, Abel C.

Death Takes Aged Oil Springs Man
Abel C. Caudill Passes April 18 Abel C. Caudill, 82, died at his home
near Oil Springs at 3:30 P. M., Sunday, April, 18, following an
extended illness. Mr. Caudill was born In Johnson County January 14,
1866 the son of the late Jack and Rebecca Harris Caudill. He was
one of a family of ten, all of whom preceded him in death. He was
united in marriage to Louise Rice in 1880. To this union were
born ten children, six daughters and four sons, of whom six are still
living. He was converted and joined the United Baptist Church in
1908 and lived a devoted Christian life until his death. Surviving are
the following children; Mrs. Boe Trimble, Mrs. Roy Colvin, Mrs. Elbert
Reed, and Mrs. Arthur Kelsay all of Oil Springs, Mrs. James Caudill,
Clay City, Ky., and Mrs. Walter Caudill, Hammond, Indiana. Also
surviving ae 28 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren and a host of
friends and relatives. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April
20, at 1:30 P. M., at the United Baptist Church by Revs. Firman Blair
and Doug Conley. Burial was in the family cemetery. Paintsville

CAUDILL, Emma

DENVER
Death visited the home of Luther Caudill Thursday, and took from them
their loving mother, "Aunt" Emma Caudill, as she was known by all in
the neighborhood. "Aunt" Emma had been in ill health for some
time. She was eighty-two years old. She was a devoted
member of the United Baptist Church. She is survived by the
following children, Mrs. Rosa Lee Blair, Mrs. Bennie Hitchcok, Luther,
Monroe, and Frank Caudill all of Denver, Mrs. Milt Salyer of
Paintsville, Mrs Lawrence Litteral of Oil Springs, and a number of
grand children and great-grand children, besides a host of relatives
and friends. Her husband, "Uncle" Camel Caudill preceded her in

CRUM, James

Boons Camp Man Dies Here
James Crum, 56, miner, of Boons Camp, died in a local hospital at 10:30
A.M., Saturday, April 3, 1948 of a heart condition following an illness
of three years. Mr. Crum was born in Johnson County May 14, 1880, the
son of James W. Crum. He had resided at Boons Camp for a number
of years and was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving
besides his wife, Laura Crum are two sons, James E., and Frank M. Crum
and five brothers and one sister. Funeral Services were conducted at
the home at 10:00 A.M., Monday, April 5, by the Revs. John Crum,
Leonard Walters, and Eliza Banks. Burial was in the cemetery at Boons
Camp.
DANIEL, David Harold
1948
Pfc. David Harold Daniel, 31, a native of Paintsville, died Tuesday,
April 6, of chest wounds from an accidentally discharged gun at
San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he was stationed in the U. S.Army,
according to information received here by his mother, Mrs. Nancy Ellen
Daniel. He was a brother of Homer Daniel of this city. Details of
Pfc. Daniel's death were not immediately available. He was a
graduate of Paintsville High School, and was a veteran of World War 11
with 34 months of overseas duty. He was discharged September 11,
1945, and reenlisted in the Signal Corps branch of the U. S.Army April
11, 1948. At the time of his death, he was stationed in the post
signal office of the U. S. Army, Signal Corps, at San Juan. Surviving
besides his mother are four brothers, and four sisters, Jay Daniel,
Cincinnati, O., Oakley Daniel, Chicago, Ill., Mitchell Daniel, Seattle,
Washington, Homer Daniel, city, Mrs. W. W. Wireman, Cincinnati, O.,
Mrs. Herbert Southers, Ashland, and Mrs. Norman Statton, Baltimore, Md.
The body is to be taken to the John Steen Funeral Home in the
Ashland. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Rites Monday for Pfc. David H. Daniel Funeral services for Pfc. David
Harold Daniel, 31, native of Paintsville and brother of Homer Daniel,
foreman of the Paintsville Herald, were held Monday at 2 P.M. at the
John Steen Funeral Home in Ashland by Rev. Clay Caudill, Pastor of the
Central Baptist Church. Pfc. Daniel was accidentally shot and killed in
San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 6. A member of the U.S. Signal
Corps, he was assigned to the post signal office at San Juan. He was
the son of Mrs. Ellen Salyer Daniel of Cincinnati, and the late William
Daniel of this city. Surviving besides the mother are four brothers,
Oakley Daniel, Hammond, Ind., Mitchell Daniel, Seattle, Wash., Homer
Daniel, city, and Jay D. Daniel, Cincinnati, four sisters, Mrs. W. H.
Wireman, Cincinanti, Mrs. J. N. Statton, Monkton, Md., Mrs. L. C.

Pfc. David Harold Daniel was born May 12, 1917 at Paintsville, Kentucky
and died April, 6, 1948 of a gunshot wound at the hands of an assasin
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, while serving his country. He was the son of
Ellen Daniel and the late William Daniel. His father, preceded
him in death on April, 5, 1930. Pfc. Daniel was a graduate of the
Paintsville High School. He was a veteran of World War 11,
serving 34 months overseas. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 11,
1945 and reenlisted on April, 11, 1946. He was serving with the
Signal Corps at the time of his death, and was stationed in the post
signal office of the U. S. Army at San Juan. The following message was
received by Pfc. Daniel's mother from his Commanding Officer, Colonel
William R. Irvin. "As a member of his command your son was liked by all
of his associates. He was an excellent soldier, performing all
tasks assigned to him in a cheerful and efficient manner, thereby
winning the praise of his immediate superiors and the respect of his
comrades. News of his death comes as a real shock to all who knew him,
and his loss will be felt keenly in his organization. I sincerely hope
that the knowledge that your son was an exemplary soldier and died
while serving his country will afford you some consolation in your
bereavement." Surviving besides his mother are four brothers and four
sisters, Oakley Daniel, and Jay Daniel, Mrs. W. H. Wireman, Mrs.
Herbert Southers, Mrs. L. C. DeHart and Mrs. J. N. Statton. "Be not

FRALEY, Mrs. Geneva (Miller)

Mrs. Geneva Fraley Dies April 24
Mrs. Geneva Fraley, 55, wife of William Fraley of Van Lear died in a
local hospital early Saturday morning, April 24, following an illness
of more than two years. Mrs. Fraley was born February 13, 1893, near
Louisa, the daughter of James and the late Melissa Wilson Miller. She
was a loyal and devoted member of the Freewill Baptist Church for a
number of years. Surviving besides her husband are five children: two
daughters, Mrs. Clyde Arrowood and Mrs. Walter Barker, both of Van
Lear. Also surviving are her father, James Miller, Prestonsburg, Mrs.
W. C. Moore, Kenova, W. Va., Mrs. Jim Justice, Pikeville, Mrs. Charles
Allen, Louisa, Mr. Al Butcher, Birmingham, Alabama, and one brother,
Bryan Mille, Prestonsburg. Funeral services were conducted Monday at
1:00 P. M. at the Freewill Baptist Church in Louisa by Res. Walter
Hooper, Claude Preston and W. M. Moore. Burial was in the Pinehill

MRS. FOREST LEMASTER DIES MONDAY IN OHIO
Mrs. Forest Lemaster, former resident of Johnson County, died Monday
evening at Fayetteville, Ohio after an illness of 2 1-2 years from
diabetes. Before moving to Ohio a few years ago, Mrs. Lemaster and her
husband lived on a farm at Barnetts Creek, now owned by Dr. G. M.
Stafford. She was a former president of the Homemakers Club here, and
is widely known in this county. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m.
today at the Christian Church at Mt. Orab, Ohio. PAINTSVILLE

MCKENZIE, Nathan Asbury
1948
OBITUARY
Nathan Asbury McKenzie was born January 4, 1869, and departed this life
April 18, 1948. He was the son of Martin and Littie Sparks McKenzie. On
September 5. 1895, he was married to Cora Ward of Sitka, Ky., and to
this union was born six children, four daughters and two sons: Mrs. J.
M. Slone, Paintsville, Mrs. Charles Stapleton of Lowmansville,
deceased, Mrs. J. H. Hampton, Lowmansville, Mrs. Roy A. Daniels, Sitka;
Mr. R. B McKenzie and Mr. Clyde McKenzie, both of Paintsville. He
leaves to mourn his passing besides his wife and children, thirty
grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one brother, Phillip
McKenzie, and a host of friends and relatives. Brother McKenzie was
converted and baptized by the hand of Brother W. W. Daniels and joined
the United Baptist Church at Sugar Grove January 1894. Later he came by
letter to the United Baptist Church at Georges Creek where he was
ordained a deacon fifteen years ago. He lived a true, devoted Christian
life until separated by death. His wife lost one of the most loving
husbands, the children a dear, devoted father, the church one of its
greatest deacons, but their loss is heaven’s gain. He will be
missed by all who knew him; but if his pattern in life is followed,
they will be able to meet him where God said He would wipe away all
tears. Brother McKenzie came to the end of life’s journey at the age of

N. A. McKenzie Succumbs After Short Illness Funeral Services
Tuesday at Georges Creek Church Nathan Asbury Mckenzie, 79, died
at his home on Preston Street at 9:20 P.M., Sunday, April 18, after a
short illness Mr. McKenzie was born in Johnson County January 4, 1869,
the son of Martin and Littie Sparks McKenzie. He was married to
Cora Ward of Sitka September 5, 1855, and to this union were born six
children. Hel followed his occupation as carpenter in the city
for a number of years. Mr. McKenzie was a devoted and loyal
member of the United Baptist Church in which he was ordained a deacon
fifteen years ago. Surviving are his wife, Cora McKenzie, and five
children, three daughters, Mrs. J.M. Slone of this city, Mrs John
Hampton, Lomansville, Mrs. Roy Daniels, Sitka, two sons D.L. and Clyde
McKenzie, both of this city. Also surviving are one brother,
Phillip McKenzie, Lomansville and 30 grandchildren and 16 great
grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. One
daughter, Mrs. Charles Spradlin of Lomansville preceeded him in death.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 20 at the
Georges Creek United Baptist Church by Rev. Leonard Walters, Charles
Estepp, and J.P. Riggsby. Burial was in the McKenzie cemetery.

Heart Attack Takes Martha Murphy, 62
Mrs. Martha Murphy, 62, died suddenly of a heart attack at 5: A. M.,
Tuesday, April 20, at her home at White House. Mrs. Murphy was born on
Georges Creek, the daughter of Newell Wheeler. She had been a resident
of White House about nine years and was a member of the Freewill
Baptist Church. She is survived by four children, three daughters, Mrs.
Shellie Isaacs, Bevinsville, Ky., Mrs. Frank Blessing, Patrick, Ky.,
Mrs. Raymond Meeks, Wabash, Ind., and one son, Ralph Wheeler of White
House. Funeral services were held at White House at 1:00 P. M. April 22

William L. Perkins Dies Saturday
Word has been received here of the death of William L. Perkins of a
heart attack at his home at Vine Grove, Ky., at 12:06 p.m., Saturday,
April 3. Mr. Perkins was a former teacher and coach in the school here
and had many friends in the city who regret to hear of his death.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 Tuesday morning. PAINTSVILLE

World War II Vets Victims Of Auto Crash
Funeral For Enoch W. Robinson At May Church Tuesday Enoch Walter
Robinson, Jr., 19, was killed in an automobile accident here early
Sunday morning. His companion Edwin T. Gibson, 24, of Louisville, a
salesman for Modern Art Distributors, received injuries which resulted
in his death a day later. The accident occurred in Stafford Addition on
Route 23 when Robinson, driver of the car, crashed into a parked
truck-trailer. Both victims were veterans of World War II. Enoch Jr.
was born in this city July 11, 1928, the son of Anna Bailey Robinson
and the late Enoch W. Robinson. He was a graduate of the Paintsville
High School in the class of ’46 and a popular member of the football
team. He enlisted in the Marine Corps August 15, 1946, and received his
basic training at Parris Island, S. C. Later at Cherry Point, N. C., he
was connected with the seagoing outfit and made cruises to South
Africa, Puerto Rico and other points. He received his discharge on
March 19, 1948. He had planned to enter pre-medical school at the
University of Louisville this fall. He is survived by his mother
and a number of half-sisters and brothers: Mrs. Felix Crider, City,
Mrs. Bascom Taylor, Sitka, Mrs. Mrs. Bill Brown, Catlettsburg, Mrs. Roy
Melvin, City, Mrs. Burl Castle, Jamestown, Ohio, Manuel Robinson,
Ponoma, California, J. C. Robinson, Portsmouth, Ohio, W. L. Robinson,
City, Mrs. Arthur Vaughan, Ashland, Mrs. Sanford Damron, Catlettsburg,
James Gillespie, Meally, Mrs. H. C. Arnett, City Mrs. David Daniel,
City, and Earl H. Gillespie, City, and Gertrude Gillespie. J. W.
Robinson and W. F. Robinson preceded him in death. Funeral services
were conducted Tues, April 6, at 2:00 in the Mayo a memorial Church by
Rev. Krebs. The largest crowd gathered for a funeral in the city in
recent years gave evidence of the affection and esteem with which he
was regarded in the community. Former classmates acting as pallbearers
were: Jim Hall, Corky Kirtley, C. T. Butler, Earl Meeks, Jr., James
Paul Gillespie, Richard Sparks, E. T Sherman, and Harry Wheeler. Burial

SPARKS, John H.
Dies April 29
John H. Sparks, 72, died Friday at his home at Davisville on Hood Creek.
Mr. Sparks’ death was sudden although he had been in ill health for the
past few years. He was born September 17, 1875, the son of Henry and
Dideno Bently Sparks. Except for nine years spent in Arizona, he
had been a lifelong resident of the Hood Creek section where he
followed farming as an occupation. He was a member of the United
Baptist Church. On February 25, 1909, he was married to Bertha Pack who
survives. Also surviving are two sons, W. D. Sparks, Louisa,
county attorney of Lawrence County, Marvin T. Sparks, Winifred, two
daughters, Marjory Slone, Kerz, and Jewell Ross, Flat Gap, and the
following brothers and sisters, Daniel Sparks, Safford, Arizona, Rinda
Wheeler, Minford, Ohio, Angeline Chandler, Beaver, Ohio, and Dellia
Sparks, Safford, Ariz. Funeral services were held at Old Hood Church at
Davisville on Sunday, May 2, by Rev. Foster Riggsby and Rev. Culley
Sparks. Burial was made in the Old Hood Cemetery. Paintsville Herald

VANHOOSE, Julia (Helton)

JULIA VAN HOOSE DIES MONDAY
Mrs. Julia Van Hoose, 85, widow of Bascom Van Hoose, died at her home
in Nippa Monday, April 12, after an illness of more than a year. Mrs.
Van Hoose was the daughter of the late Nathan and Fanny Pack Helton and
was a well-known and beloved resident of her county. She was affiliated
with the Freewill Baptist Church and was a devoted member. She is
survived by seven children: Arthur Van Hoose, Glow; Burns Van Hoose,
Thealka; Beulah Van Hoose and Mrs. Nellie Preston, both of Nippa,
Charles Van Hoose, Leslie Van Hoose and Zelda Bailey, all of this city,
and Mrs. Francis Bellamy of Jenkins, Ky. Funeral services were
conducted at the Freewill Baptist Church at Nippa at 2:00 P. M
Wednesday, April 14 by Revs. L. E. Colliver, and C. C. Hall. Burial was

MARY VAN HOOSE DIES APRIL 16 1948
The many friends throughout eastern Kentucky of Mrs. Mary Van Hoose
will be sorry to hear of her death at her home in Huntington, W. Va.,
at 11:30 A.M. Friday, April 16. Mrs. Van Hoose was born at Paintsville
Oct. 16, 1859, the daughter of Timothy and Elizabeth Spears Cunningham.
Surviving are five children: four daughters, Mrs. Neva Forrest,
Huntington, W. Va.; Mrs. Charlotte Cales, Chesapeake, Ohio; Mrs.
Elizabeth Hurt Russell and Mr. Ruth Lambert, of Charleston, W. Va.; a
son, A. W. Van Hoose of Huntington; three sisters, Mrs. Jane Conley of
this city, Mrs. William Lauten Slager of Newark, Ohio, and Mrs.
Gertrude Anderson of Huntington, and 15 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. The services were conducted Saturday night at the
Klingle-Carpenter Funeral Home. Due to flood conditions burial was
postponed until Tuesday morning at 10:00 A. M., where graveside rites
were conducted at the Ridgetown Cemetery in Huntington. Paintsville
