Dies In Hospital
Sunday, April 30 Dr. S. V. Azbill, 62-year-old Red Bush dentist, died
Sunday,
April 30, 1950 at a local hospital after several months' illness. Born
in McKee, Ky., Jackson County, July 22, 1888, he was the son of J. M.
and
Katherine Becknel Azbill. He moved from there to Red bush where
he
had lived for the past twenty-five years. He had been married
twenty-two
years to Esta Stapleton and was a life-long member of the Christian
Church.
He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion and
attended
Berea College. He is survived by his wife and two brothers, Dr. E. W.
Azbill,
Hatch, New Mexico, Dr. A. J. Azbill, Las Vegas, Nev., and one sister,
Mrs.
Alson Issiac, Reno, Nev. Funeral services were at 10:00 a. m.,
Wednesday,
May 3 at the home with Rev. Dewey Brown officiating. Burial was in the
family cemetery at Red Bush under the direction of the Paintsville

Blanton,
37, died at her home at Kenwood on April 13, 1950, after an illness of
four years. She was the daughter of Willie and Mousie Osborne and was a
member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are the following
children,
Pattie Frank, Johnnie, Clara, Rilda, Laura and Larry. Her husband,
Oliver
Blanton, died two years ago. Funeral services were held Friday, April
14,
at the residence by Rev. Kendrick Blanyton,. Burial was made in the
family

Wreck Funeral services were conducted Wednesday for Walter Blanton, 23,
of Pal, Ohio, who was killed instantly in a car wreck on Highway 161
near
Mechanicsburg, Ohio, about 6:00 p. m., Sunday, April 23, 1950.
Services
were held at the State Road Fork United Baptist Church by Rev. Cullie
Sparks.
The son of Edd and Mary Salyer Blanton, he was born in this county July
26, 1926. He had resided in Pal, Ohio, for the past several years
where he was employed by the Farmers Exchange. Survivors include the
following
brothers and sisters: Hayes and Jessie Clinton Blanton, Falcon, Mrs.
Clara
Blair and Mrs. Esta Conley, Oil Springs, Mrs. Sarah Shepherd,
Portsmouth,
O., and Mrs. Pearlie McKellip Springfield, Ohio. Burial was in the Bill
Rice cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

35, died in a local hospital at 10:30 a. m., Sunday, April 23, 1950,

a four months illness. Death was attributed to cancer. A resident
of Tutor Key, she was born in this county, the daughter of Sam B. and
Neva
Harmon Castle. She was affiliated with the United Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Fonnie Castle, and seven children;

Albert, Verlin Cecil, Alfred, Ernest James, Sarah Virginia, and Neva
Mae
all at home. She is also survived by the following brothers and
sisters;

Claims Davella Boy John Lester Crump, 19, died at 5:00 a. m., April 21,
1950 at his home at Davella, Ky., of Bright's Disease. He was born
August
17, 1931, at Point Pleasant, W. Va., the son of Clarence and Goldie
Stulter
Crump. He had been a resident of Davella for three years, where
he
was employed as a sawmill operator. He was affiliated with the
Christian
Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters and one
brother,
Joe Ann, Patricia and Clarence Ray, all at home. Funeral services were
held Monday, April 24, at 2:00 p. m., at the Nazarene Church by Rev. C.

Jeff Daniel,
67, retired miner, died at his home at Nippa at 1:45 a.m., Monday April
3, 1950 after an illness of four months. The son of George and
Elizabeth
Helton Daniel he was born in Johnson County May 7, 1882, and had
resided
in the community of Nippa all of his life. He was a member of the
Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Vina Belcher
Daniel,
and six children; five daughters, Mrs. Syble Daniel and Miss Anna Ruth
Daniel both of Nippa, Mrs. Okie Daniel and Mrs. Edith Lyons both of
Lomansville
and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Browning, Chenoe; and one son, Jeff Daniel,
Jr.
Nippa. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Lon and Lilroy
both of Tutor Key, John, City Joe, West Virginia, and Mrs. Frank
Preston,
Tutor Key. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.,
April
5 at the Freewill Baptist Church at Nippa by Revs. Millard Van Hoose

River. She was the daughter of Grant and Missouri Daniels.

Davis, 77, died Sunday, April 30, at his home following a heart attack,
Rites were held at 10 a. m. Wed., May 3, at the Davis Branch Church.
Officiating
ministers were Revs. Marlen and Arthur Preece. Born March 22, 1873, at
Debord, KY., he was a farmer there all his life. He was a member of the
United Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Roxy Ann, two daughters,
Mrs. Elizabeth Cline, Debord, and Mrs. Cary Mullet, Boones camp, three
sons, Brady, and Albert, Debord, and Charles of Stone, KY. One sister,
Mrs. Lou Nester, North Kenova, O., also survives. Services were under
the

Monday,
Dies in Philadelphia Funeral services were held at 2:00 Monday
afternoon
at the First Methodist Church in this city for Winfeld Scott Ealey, 81,
who died at his home in Philadelphia, Penn., Thursday, April 27, 1950,
of complications following an illness of several years. His early youth
was spent at Barnetts Creek where he was born May 3, 1868, the son of
the
late Mr. And Mrs. William Ealey. He later attended a Teachers'
College
in Lebanon, Ohio, and following completion of his course returned here
where he taught in the City School and in various schools throughout
the
county. Widely known in this area where he soon gained prominence
as an outstanding teacher, he had many friends in this section where
his
influence as an educator contributed much to the intellectual
development
of the young people of the town and county. Much of his later
life
was spent in the East, and he and his family had resided in
Philadelphia
for the past several years. He became a member of the Methodist
Church
thirty-three years ago and his life of Christian service was an
impressive
example of devotion to the principles of Christianity. Survivors
include
his wife, Callie Clay Ealey; one son, Virgil; one granddaughter, Mrs.
Glen
Williams; one great grandson, glen Williams, Jr., all of
Philadelphia.
Surviving also are three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Ann Trimble and Mrs.
Cynthia
Sturgill both of Barnetts Creek, Mrs. Lottie Rice, Ashland; two
brothers,
George Ealey, Barnetts Creek, Frank Ealey, Miamisburg, Ohio. Funeral
services
were conducted by Dr. T. B. Ashley of Pikeville assisted by Rev. C. W.
Krebs. Burial was in the Mayo cemetery under the direction of the

William Floyd
Haney, 62, died unexpectedly of a heart condition at his home on Wood
Street
at 1:30 a. m., April 19, 1950. The son of Thomas and Emma Turner Haney,
he was born in Magoffin County March 1, 1888. He was well known and
liked
in this city where he had lived for the past forty years, and his death
came as a shock to his many friends here. He engaged in general work
around
town and for many years had been employed as a janitor at the Mayo
Memorial
Church. Survivors include his wife, Rhoda Alice Spradlin Haney, and six
children; three daughters, Miss Anna Mae Haney and Mrs. Nellie Fay
Johnson
both of this city, Mrs. Josephine Spriggs, Boons Camp; three sons,
Chester
Lee, Estill, Elmer Lewis, all of this city. Surviving also are the
following
brothers, John Boyd, this city, and Fred, Riley, Dorcie, and Leroy
all
of McGuffeey, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p. m.,

HARMON, Adam
1855-1950
Adam Harmon,
95 years of age, a widely known citizen of this section, passed away at
10:25 P. M. Friday, April 21, 1950 at his home on Johns Creek after a
five-day
illness. He was a descendant of the Harmon family whose members
were
among the early explorers in Johnson County where they helped to
establish
the first settlement in Eastern Kentucky, known at that time as Harmon
Station. Mr. Harmon was born February 5, 1855 on Little Paint Creek
near
East Point, the son of William and Mary Jane George Harmon. He
was
a member of the Church of Christ. An employee of the North East
Coal
Company on Johns Creek for many years, he later followed farming as an
occupation. His wife, Rebecca Witten Harmon, died on December 8,
1937. Surviving are four sons and two daughters, John, Layland, W. Va.,
Pitt, Dimmitt, Texas, Luther, Langley and Frank of Wayland, Mrs. Clara
May, Prestonsburg and Miss Anna Harmon, at home. He is survived
by
22 grand children, 26 great-grandchildren and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the
Philadelphia
Church of Christ on Johns Creek by the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt. Interment

Harris,
78, who died at her home at Chandlerville at 1:00 p. m., April 16, 1950
following a stroke. She was born at Chandlerville March 9, 1872, the
daughter
of the late John and Minnie Sparks Green. A lifelong resident of
this community, she was affiliated with the United Baptist Church at
Franks
Creek. She was married in Paintsville in 1930 to Dave Harris who
preceded her in death August 1941. She is survived by four
step-daughters,

years.

83, a prominent and respected citizen of East Point, died at his home

Born
in Jackson County, Missouri, December 14, 1866, the son of Sampson J.

Martha Litteral Johnson, he was widely known throughout this section
where
most of his life was spent. He formerly engaged in farming and
was
a member of the United Baptist Church. He was married sixty years
ago to Martha Baldridge, who survives him. Surviving also are five

John Porter,
61, died at his home in Odds, Kentucky at 9:00 a.m. Monday, April 3,
1950
after an illness of six years. He was born in Floyd County, May 31,
1888,
the son of the late John and Matilda Sester Porter. A retired miner, he
had lived at Odds, Ky. for the past 22 years, and was a member of the
Church
of Christ there. He was affilated with the Masons. He is survived
by his wife, Mrs. Rosa Porter and a step-son, Elmer Austin of Boons
Camp,
Ky. Also surviving are one sister and four brothers, Mrs. Dave Collins,
Ashland; Noah Porter, Auxier, Ky.; George Dewey Porter, Theodore Porter

Preston,
89, prominent resident of Tutor Key died in a local hospital at 4:05
p.m.,
Thursday, April 20, 1950 after a two week's illness. Born in Johnson
County
September 13, 1860, the son of the late Greenville and Exer Ward
Preston,
he was a recognized leader in his community where he engaged in the
merchandising
business before his retirement and also served as postmaster. A
devout
Christian he became a member of the United Baptist Church January 23,
1887,
and had served as a minister for the past sixty years. He was
married
July 14, 188l, to Amanda VanHoose, who preceded him in death July 27,
1940.
He later married Sally Daniel Preston who survives him. Surviving
besides
his widow are five children; one daughter, Mrs. Albert Mills, Akron,
Ohio,
four sons Clell, Seco, John, Bert, and Guff all of Tutor Key. A
brother,
I. M. Preston, Ashland, also survives. He also leaves 16 grandchildren,
23 great grandchildren, and one great, great, grandchild. Funeral
services
were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 23, at the Toms Creek
Church
at Tutor Key by Revs. Cullie Sparks and Robert Castle. Burial was
in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral

Home Mrs. Mildred Price, 26, died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Wm.
Wallen,
on April 7, 1950, after a 6 months illness of rheumatic heart disease.
She was born in Paintsville, August 14, 1923, the daughter of Ethel
Williams
Fairchild and the later Joseph Fairchild. Her residence at the
time
of her death was Meally, Ky., where she was a member of the Christian
Church.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Cecil E. Price and
one son, Ronnie Gregory Price. Also surviving are one sister and
two brothers, Miss Betty Jo Fairchild, at home, Byrnes C. Fairchild,
Paintsville
and William Estill Fairchild, San Francisco, Calf. Funeral services
were
held Tuesday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Christian Church, city, by

Dies In Estill
Sunday, April 30 Effie Mayo Salyers, 65, died Sunday, April 30, 1950 at
her home in Estill, Ky., after an extended illness. She is a former
resident
of Van Lear, but has lived in both Wayland and Estill for the past six
years. Born July 1, 1884, in West Van Lear, the daughter of James A.
and
Lorinda Davis Spradlin, she was to become the wife of Frank Salyers.
She
is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Mills, Wayland, one stepson,
Ralph
Salyer, one sister, Mrs. Hattie Webb, Prestonsburg, and two half
sisters,
Mrs. Pattie Barber of West Van Lear, and Mrs. Frankie Auxier, of
Madison,
Ind. Funeral services were at 2:00 P. M., Tuesday, May 2, at the Barber
Home, the Rev. Isaac Stratton, of Banner, Ky., presiding. Burial was in
the family cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home.

Paris VanHoose,
68, a native of Johnson County died in the Methodist Hospital at
Pikeville
at 9:50 a. m., April 1, 1950 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. He
was born April 16, 1881, the son of Lee and Mandy Stapleton
VanHoose.
He went to Hellier twenty-five years ago and had resided there ever
since.
He was an active member of the Freewill Baptist Church and was a highly
respected citizen and a good neighbor. He is survived by two sisters,
Cora
Sammons, Lancer, Susan Yates, Little Paint, and one brother, Sam
VanHoose,
Lowmansville. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Henry
Davis
at 2:00 p. m., Monday, April 3, by Rev. Hobert Spriggs. Burial
was
in the Spriggs cemetery at Allegheny, Ky., under the direction of the
Baker

Walters
Dies At Williamsport. Mr. Robert " Uncle Bobby" Walters died at he age
of 82 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jeff Davis at Williamsport, at
7:45
p.m. Thursday April 6, 1950, after an illness of about three
weeks.
Death came as a result of a leg fracture " Uncle Bobby" received in a
fall
March 16, 1950. Born the son of the late John M. and Sarah Litteral
Walters,
he was never married during his long life. His occupation was
that
of a farmer. In additon to his sister, Mrs. Davis, with whom he
resided,
he is survived by another sister Mrs. Van Graham who lives at Cherokee,
Ky. Burial services were Sunday April 9, 1950, at the Old Friendship
United
Baptist Church at Williamsport under the direction of the Preston
Funeral
Home. Presiding at the funeral were Elders Leonard Walters, Flem
Arrowood,
Glenn Arrowwood, Lafe Preston, and Sam Preston, he was buried in the
family

Mrs. Charles
D. Wells Funeral services were held today at 2:00 p.m. for Mrs. Charles
D. Wells, who died Tuesday in a Huntington hospital of acute gastritis.
She was buried in the Ridgelawn Cemetery immediately following services
in the Emmanuel Methodist Church, Huntington. She was born in Cabell
County,
a daughter of the late Dr. Henry G. Sowards and Katherine Spencer
Sowards
now of Huntington. She lived with her family in Paintsville the greater
portion of her life. The late Dr. Sowards was a president of Jno. C. C.
Mayo College and a former pastor of Mayo Memorial Methodist Church. For
her early education, Mrs. Wells attended Margaret Hall School in
Versailles,
Ky., but returned to her home here and was graduated from Mayo College.
She later attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She was a
member
of Mayo Methodist Church. Survivors include the husband now living in
Paintsville,
partner of the Wells, Williams Insurance Agency, the mother, who lives
at 1755 Fifth Avenue, Huntington; two brothers, E. Chatham Sowards and
John B. Sowards of Huntington, and a neice, Deborah Sowards,
Charleston.
The Rev. Charles S. Perry of Louisa and the Rev. D. L. Snyder, pastor,
officiated at the services. Burial was under the direction of the
Kincaid

Mrs. Flora White,
78, of Ashland, former resident of Paintsville, died Sunday at 10:30
a.m.
in a Lexington hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. White was
born
in Paintsville, a daughter of the late Jack and Rhoda Branham Robinson.
She was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were held in
Ashland
with the Rev. Donald Wells, pastor of the Pollard Baptist Church,
officiating.
Burial was made in the Ashland Cemetery. Surviving are three sons,
Gaylord
and Marion White, Ashland and Frank White, Cleveland, Ohio, a brother,
Willie Robinson, Paintsville, a half-sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Runyon,
Rock

93-Year-Old Man
Passes At Nippa Thomas Wilcox, passed away at his home at Volga April
24,
1950, only one day after he had passed his ninety-third birthday.
He had been ill for about four years. Mr. Wilcox was born April 23,
1857,
in Wayne County, W.Va., the son of Jack and Angeline Lemaster
Wilcox.
He had been a resident of Volga for the past 25 years whre he followed
farming as an occupation. He was a member of the Missionary
Baptist
Church. Surviving is his wife, Cynthia Lemaster Wilcox, to whom he was
married in 1933. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. at
the

after an illness of five weeks. Born the daughter of Noah and Loveta
McCombs
Moore in Lawrence County, she lived practically all of her life in
Johnson
County. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Besides
her parents, she is survived by her husband, Virgil Wiley to whom she
was
married in October 1944, one daughter Eva Mae, two brothers, William G.
Moore, Gallup, Ky., Harm Moore, Richardson, Ky., two sisters, Mrs.
Jesse
Watts, Huntington, W.Va.and Mrs. Mandy Hardman, Gallup, Ky. Funeral
services
under the direction of the Rev. Millard Van Hoose were held at the Lick
Log Freewill Baptist Church at 1:p.m. May 1, 1950. Burial was in
the Sugar Plum Cemetery in Lawrence County by the Preston Funeral Home.

Young, 32, died at her home at Debord, Ky., at 5:00 a. m., Monday,

24, 1950 after an illness of three years. A resident of Debord for 15
years,
she was a member of the United Baptist Church there. Born

15, 1918, she was the daughter of Steve and Margaret Honeycutt Ward.
She
is survived by her husband, Bernard Young, a daughter, Elaine, and a
son,
Monroe. Also surviving are four sisters Mrs. Ocie Butch, Debord;
Mrs. Alka Mae Shears, Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Rena Davis, Stone, Ky.,
Miss Pearl Ward, Debord; and five brothers, Douglas and Delbert Ward,
Debord,
Ky., John Ward, Van Lear, Kermit Ward U. S. Army, and Steve Ward, Jr.,
Debord. Funeral services were held at the home of her parents, in
Debord
by the Rev. Martin Preece. Interment was in the Ward Cemetery under the
