Mr. and Mrs.
Lewis Brown Lewis Brown, 80, native of Johnson and a lifelong resident
of Lowmansville, died at his home April 25. He was a member of the
United
Baptist Church. His first marriage was to Ina Castle in 1894, who
preceded
him in death in 1910. To this union five children were born, Mrs.
Beulah Slone, Ashland, Glen, Lowmansville, Ernest, Ashland, Roby, Plain
City, Ohio and Rollie, Hilliards, O. Me was married to Sarah Daniels in
1914, who survives him. To this union two children were born,
Bunia
and Walter, who preceded him in death. He also leaves
twenty-three
grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Paintsville Herald

1951 Rites Held for Aged Lowmnsville Resident Lewis Brown, 80,
prominent
farmer of the county, died at his home at Lowmansville at 7:00 a. m.,
Tuesday,
April 25 of a heart condition from which he had suffered for the past
five
years. A native of Johnson, he was born December 2, 1870, the son of
the
late John J. and Fanny Spencer Brown. His entire life was spent in the
Lowmansville section. He was a member of the United Baptist
Church.
He was first married to Ina Castle who preceded him in death in 1910
and
then to Sarah Daniel, who also preceded him in death. Surviving are
seven
children: one daughter, Mrs. Beulah Slone, Ashland, six sons,
Glen,
Lowmansville, Ernest, Ashland; Robbie, Plain City, Ohio; Robbie,
Hilliards,
Ohio, and Bernie and Waler Brown. Also Surviving is one sister,
Mrs.
Katie Hinkel, Lowmansville. Funeral services were conducted at the home
at 10:00 a. m., Friday, April 27, by Revs. Robert Daniel and G.
W.
Preston. Burial was in the family cemetery under of direction of

Fatal To Retired Miner
Con Castle, 62,
died at his home in Nippa, Ky., on Wednesday, April 4, at 4:00 a.m.,
after
an illness of five years. He was born in Johnson County, Ky., December
15, 1888, the son of James and Sarah Daniels Castle. A life-long
resident of Nippa, he was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and
had
been engaged in mining, from which occupation he had retired. He is
survived
by his wife, Beulah Sadler Castle, three daughters, Mrs. Numa Daniels,
Lowmansville, Mrs. Vonda VanHoose, Nippa, and Mrs. Ruth Daniels, River
and four sons, Edwin, Washington, D.C., Raymond, Springfield, Ohio,
Lofty,
Nashville, Tenn., and Homer, at home. Also surviving are three sisters
and one brother, Mrs. Malta Rice, Sitka; Mrs. Lell Murphy, Seco; Mrs.
Brida
Taylor, Staffordsville and Jonah Castle, Nippa. Funeral services will
be
held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 6, at the home, with Revs. Millard
VanHoose
and Don Fraley officiating. Burial will be in the Nippa family
cemetery

Services Held
Tuesday For Lucian Grace Lucian Grace, 47, miner of Lovely, Ky., died
at
his home Sunday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m., following a two-year
illness.
Death was attributed to a stroke. Born August 19, 1903 in Martin
County,
he was the son of Mrs. Mary Goble Grace now of East Kermit and the late
John Grace. He had resided at Lovely for the past eight years.
Survivors
include besides his mother, his wife, Mrs. Marie Davis Grace, two
daughters
LuLa Mae and Phyllis Ann both at home; two sons John Rae and Lucian,
Jr.
at home. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters;
Curtis
Grace, Lovely; Mrs. Belinda Dillion, Big Creek; Mrs. Virginia Chaffnis,
Wayne County, W. Va.; William Grace, Blaine Grace, Mrs. Carrie Stepp
and
Mrs. Eunice Harmon all of East Kermit, W. Va. Funeral services were
conducted
from the home at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, and burial was in the
East
Kermit Cemetery under the direction of The Richmond-Callaham Funeral

To Robert B. Hager
Robert B. Hager,
69, of New York City, formerly of Johnson County died April 20, 1951 in
a Norton, Virginia hospital of a heart attack. He was the owner of the
Hager Coal Company. Surviving are the widow, the former Goldie Mitchell
of Greenup, Ky., two sons, R. Barton Hager, Jr., Tiffon, O., and V.
Mitchell
Hager, Westport, Conn., two sisters, Mrs. Virgie Geiger and Miss Edna
Hager,
and a brother Russell Hager, all of this city. His stepmother, Mrs.
Jane
Hager of Paintsville and two grandchildren also survive. Funeral
services
were conducted at 3:00 p.m., April 22, at the Greenup Presbyterian
Church
with the Rev. J. Arthur Depew officiating. Burial was made in the
Riverview

Jones,
7-year-old daughter of Giddie and Serena Van Hoose Jones of Flat Gap,
died
suddenly in a local hospital, Thursday, April 26, 1951. Surviving
besides
here parents are the following brothers and sisters: Carol Sue,
Myrtle,
Norma, Chester, and Marion, all of Flat Gap, Mrs. Goldie Balls, Gordon,
W. Va., Mrs. Sylvia Kaskay, Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Virginia Anderson, Mrs.
Audrey Salyers and Henry and Ernest Jones, all of Fairborn, Ohio.
Funeral
services were held at the home of the parents at 1:30 p. m., Sunday,
April
29, by Rev. Harry Bruce Daniels and Rev. Don Fraley. Music was

LESTER, C. L.

An illness of
several months proved fatal to C. L. Lester, 76, well-known county
resident,
who died at his home in Southside at 7:15 a.m., Thursday, April 19. A
native
of Lawrence County, he was born at Blaine, April 5, 1875, the son of
the
late Lindsey and Nancy Osborn Lester. A successful farmer of
Denver
for many years, he was an esteemed and respected member of that
community.
He was a member of The New Regular Baptist Church since 1901 and also a
member of the Masonic Lodge. He was married May 13, 1897, to
Della
Hamilton, who survives him. Preceding him in death besides his
parents
were four sisters and two brothers. To his family he was a patient and
loving husband and father always mindful of the little things which go
into every day living and made his home a landmark in the community
where
happiness radiated to all who came in contact with it. To his many
other
relatives and friends he was never too busy to lend a helping hand,
never
too tired to go to any one in distress, never too sick to present his
words
of cheer, his pleasant smile, or his thoughtfulness for every one.
Surviving
besides his wife, Della Hamilton Lester, are three children, one
daughter,
Mrs. Everette Rice, city; three sons, W. E. Lester, Jenkins, Dewey
Lester,
Canada, Ky., and Walter Lester, Salinas, Calif. Also surviving is
one sister, Mrs. Amanda Tilson, Hilliard, Ohio. Funeral services were
conducted
from the Free Will Baptist Church, Third Street, in this city, Saturday
at 2:00 p.m., April 21. The officiating ministers were Rev.
Millard
VanHoose, Rev., Claude Preston, and Rev. C. C. Hall. Hymns were
by
the Paintsville Quartet. Burial was in the Hager Hill cemetery under
the

William Maynard,
50, died at 7:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 18, 1951, in the Memorial
Hospital
at Williamson, after an illness of two months. He was born in Martin
County,
Kentucky, Feb. 25, 1901, the son of Mart and Sara Maynard, and was a
llifelong
resident of Beauty, Kentucky. He was employed by the Earlsston
Coal
Company, Kermit, W.Va., and was president of U.M.W. of A. Local 6449 in
Kermit. He was married twenty- seven years ago at Beauty to his
wife,
Opal, who survives him. He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs.
Sara
Maynard, two daughters, Mrs. Elioise Dulton, and Jean Maynard, both of
Beauty; and three sons, Estill and Glenn of Beauty, and Eliza with the
U.S. Army. Burial services were conducted, Thursday, April 18, at 2:00
p.m at the home with Rev. Allen Herman officiating. Burial was under
the

For Well-Known Woman Mrs. Hazel Talbert Pack, 46, died at her home in
Whitehouse,
Ky., at 4:55 p.m., Monday, April 30, after an illness of several
months.
She was born in Ohio, September 14, 1904, the daughter of Electra
Montgomery
Talbert and the late Harvey Talbert. She was a member of the Freewill
Baptist
Church at Whitehouse. Besides her mother, she is survived by one
daughter
and three sons, Christine Pack, Whitehouse, Russell, West Liberty;
Grover,
Whitehouse, and Joe, Thelma, Ky. Two sisters and three brothers also
survive:
Mrs. Clara Smith, and Mrs. Oliver Hughes, both of Hampton, Tenn., Edd

Tenn. Funeral services were held at the Hammond Freewill Baptist Church
today at 10:00 a.m., by Revs. Charley Bailey and Doc Rowland. Burial

Samuel Patrick,
45, died at his home at Beauty, Kentucky, Wednesday, April 25, at 4:30
a. m. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was born May 14, 1905,
in Martin County, the son of Samuel and Matilda Nichols Patrick.
His occupation was that of a coal miner, and he had resided in Beauty
the
last twenty years. He was a member of the Church of Christ and
was
also a member of the Masons. His wife preceded him in death.
Surviving
are two daughters, Shelby Jean Patrick and Mrs. Naomi Maynard, one son,
Donald Lee Patrick; one brother, J. W. Patrick, Garrett, Kentucky; and
four sister, Mrs. Emma Dameron, Warfield Kentucky, Mrs. James Preston,
Kermit, W. Va., Mrs. John D. Whitman, Portsmouth, Ohio, and Mrs. Ida
Shortridge,
Portsmouth, Ohio. Funeral services were held Friday, April 27, 1951, at
the Warfield High Gym, with Rev. Hershell Short officiating.
Burial

Jan. 29, 1907, in Johnson County, the daughter of Sam Van Hoose and the
late Lou Verna Daniel Van Hoose, and was a resident here all her life.
Surviving besides her husband are seven daughters Dora Mae, Darlene,
Helen,
Joan and Jane Patrick all of East Point, KY.;; Mrs. Geradine Freeman,
East
point and Mrs. Jean Goble, Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Billie Ray and
Robert
L. Patrick of East Point. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
Cora E. Hall, Russell, Ky., Mrs. Marie Green, Drift, Kentucky; Mrs.
Marie
Green, Drift, Kentucky; and Mrs. Neva Gullett, Paintsville; Five
brothers,

Rites Held Monday For Volga Resident Schuyler Rice, 81, prominent
farmer
of Volga, died April 14, 1951 in a local hospital following a six-month
illness. He was born at Little Mud Lick, November 21, 1868, the son of
the late W. B. and Elizabeth Butler Rice. He was a member of the
Freewill Baptist Church and was a respected member of the community in
which he had lived for forty-three years. He was married February
14, 1890, at Staffordsville to Rosa Witten who survives him. He
was
preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Rice, Sitka, and a grandson
Pfc.
Charlie McKenzie, who lost his life in World War II. Surviving besides
his widow is one daughter, Mrs. Roy McKenzie, Volga. Also
surviving
are a sister, Mrs. Kitty Estep, Georges Creek, and a brother Willie
Rice,
Sitka. He also leaves four grandsons, Hobert, Marvin, John S.,
and
Wade McKenzie all of Volga. Funeral services were conducted at the home
of his daughter at 2:00 p. m., April 16 with Revs. Millard Van Hoose,
Don
Fraley, Claude Preston, officiating. Burial was in the family
cemetery

Isabelle Cummings Shannon, 79, former Lawrence County school teacher,
and
wife of Ernest E. Shannon, president of the First National Bank, of
Louisa,
and former state treasurer, died at her home in Louisa, at 6:30 a.m.,
April
4, following and illness of one week. Mrs. Shannon, a resident of
Louisa
for 60 years, was born at Peach Orchard, Ky., March 4, 1872, a daughter
of the late William C. and Margaret Suzanne Isabelle Cummings, natives
of Scotland. The family moved to Ashland when she was four years old
and
moved to Louisa when she was nineteen. She was a graduate of the old
Ashland
Academy. Mrs. Shannon was a member of the First Methodist Church of
Louisa,
a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the
church
and a member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union. Funeral services
were conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church with
the
Rev. E.P. Swann, pastor, and the Rev. Charles S. Perry, pastor of the
Louisa
Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Pinehill Cemetery.
Surviving
are the husband, one daughter, Mrs. Robert Ripley, and a brother, John

Mrs. Alice Slone,
80, died in a local hospital at 11:10 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 1951,
after and illness of five months caused by complications from a broken
hip. She was born in Elliott County, Kentucky, December 8, 1870, the
daughter
of the late John K. and Rebecca Grizzel Pennington. She was
preceded
in
death by her husband, Isaac Slone, jailer of Johnson County from 1918
to
1922. She had resided in West Van Lear, Kentucky, four years
prior
to her death, and was a member of the Cedar Grove United Baptist Church
there. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Picklesimer, West
Van
Lear; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Holbrook, Portsmouth, Ohio, Mrs. Mary
E.
Slone, Ashland, Kentucky, and Mrs. Belle Davis, Hager Hill, Kentucky,
and
five brothers, Norman Pennington, Portsmouth, Ohio, Charlie Pennington,
Russell, Kentucky, John and Ora Pennington, Ashland, Kentucky, and

81, died at the home of a son, Virgil Stambaugh, Tutor Key, Ky., at
8:00
a. m., Saturday, April 7, as the result of a stroke suffered three
weeks
ago. He was born in Johnson County on January 24, 1870, the son of
Jonathan
and Mima Holbrook Stambaugh. A respected and well-liked member of
the community, he had been a resident of Tutor Key for the past five
years
and was a member of the United Baptist Church. He was a retired
farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Belcher Stambaugh, in 1929.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Mima Castle, Tutor
Key,
Mary Ellen Stambaugh, Hazard; Julia Stambaugh, Tutor Key, Mary Ellen
Stambaugh,
Hazard, Julia Stambaugh, of this city, Virgil Stambaugh, Tutor Key, and
John Stambaugh, Cincinnati, Ohio. Also surviving is a brother,
Dr.
H. M. Stambaugh, of Youngstown, Ohio. Funeral services were held
Monday,
April 9, at 10:00 a. m., at the Toms Creek United Baptist Church by
Revs.
Foster Rigsby, Cullie Sparks and Florda Lyons. Interment was in
the
family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

Marshall
Wagner, wife of Rolla W. Wagner of West Van Lear, died in a local
hospital
April 15, after an extended illness. She was born in Salyersville, the
daughter of Lewis and Rena Patrick Marshall, who preceded her in death
several years ago. She was married October 23, 1923, to Rolla W. Wagner
of Marietta, Ohio, and to this union seven children were born: Mrs.
Geraldine
Burke, Van Lear; Mrs. Marguerite Webb, West Van Lear; James Lewis,
Charles
Douglas, Betty Jean, Rolla Williams, Jr., and Paul Bradley at home. At
a very early age she became a member of the First Baptist Church at
Salyersville,
Ky., and in her latter years moved her membership to the West Van Lear
Baptist Church and remained a consistent member until her death. Her
devotion
to her family and her church and her willingness to serve them at all
times
were outstanding characteristics of her Christian life. She was patient
and enduring in her suffering, faithful in her prayers, and faithful in
her Christian duties. Her influence for good will long remain in the
lives
of her family and friends. Surviving besides her husband and children
are
a sister, Mrs. Harry Frontz, Tucson, Arizona, and three grandchildren

conducted
at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday in the First Baptist Church at Salyersville
with

Native Of Johnson
Dies At Ashland Home
Dr. Pleasant
H. Williams, 78, a native of this county and a practicing dentist in
Ashland
for 50 years, died suddenly at his home in Bellefonte, Tuesday morning,
April 24, 1951. He was found dead in bed by the maid who was making the
rounds of the house. Dr. Williams was active in his practice
until
a few years ago when he retired. Death was attributed to a heart
attack. He seemed in food spirits the night before and had dinner with
his sister, Mrs. W. H. Salyer and family. He was born June 6, 1878, the
son of Dr. Henderson and Melissa Holbrok Williams. He attended
school
in Johnson County and later was graduated from the Catlettsburg High
School.
Upon his graduation from high school, Dr. Williams taught school in
Ashland
public schools and was principal of the Pollard school for several
years.
He resigned from the school system and entered the Cincinnati School of
Dentistry, now a part of the University of Cincinnati, and obtained his
degree of DDS. Dr. Williams taught in the dentistry school for two
years
before beginning his practice in Ashland. In 1898 when war broke out
with
Spain he joined Company L, First Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. The
company
was inducted into the United States Army at Lexington on June 3.
On August 3, they boarded a transport for Puerto Rico where the company
was stationed all during the war. He was a past department commander in
1944-45 of the United Spanish War Veterans and took a great interest in
the organization. He was a member of the First Methodist Church,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a past president of the Kentucky
State
Dental Association. He is survived by one son, Pleasant H., Jr.,
attorney,
Ashland, two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Salyer, Ashland, Mrs. Mollie Elam,
Washington,
D.C. and one brother, Lon W. Williams, of Ashland. Paintsville Herald
