formerly of Paintsville died at her home in Dayton, Ohio, April 1, 1952
at 1:00 p. m., of a heart attack. She is survived by one daughter, Miss
Ruth Adams, formerly a teacher in the Paintsville High School. The
funeral
will be at the Eugene Baker Funeral Home in Dayton Friday
morning.

Passes April 29 Services Held Today For Whitaker Resident
Mrs. Rachel
Blair,
91 Services were held at 1:00 p.m., today at the home of Rex Blair for
his mother, Mrs. Rachel Blair, 91, who died April 29, after an illness
of two years. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Arms, she had lived
her entire life at Whitaker, Johnson County, Ky. She was preceded in
death
by her husband, Joe Blair, who died June 8, 1935, and a daughter, Mrs.
Martha Van Hoose. Survivors include three sons, Leonard, Everett and
Rex,
all of Whitaker, four daughters, Mrs. Ida Litteral, Argillite, Ky.,
Mrs.
Callie Howell, West Prestonsburg, Ky., and Mrs. Cora Fitzpatrick,
Leander,
Ky. She is also survived by 44 grandchildren, 92 great-grandchildren
and
three great-great-grandchildren. Interment was made in the family
cemetery

Saturday at 11:30 p.m. at a local hospital following an operation. Born
July 12, 1905, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Daniels, she had
resided
all her life at Williamsport. She was a member of the United Baptist
Church.
She was married February 22, 1924, to Angus Butcher, who survives.
Other
survivors are six sons; Granville (Bo) Butcher, Williamsport, Marsh
Butcher,
U.S. Army, Angus Butcher, Jr., Joe Butcher, Clifford Butcher, and Donna
Butcher, all at home. One daughter, Bonnie Butcher, at home, one
sister,
Mrs. Jesse Blanton, Thealka, Ky., one half-sister, Mrs. Boyd Polly,
Hellier,
Ky., and three half-brothers, Herman Perry, Auxier, Ky., Everett Perry,
Detroit, Michigan, and James Perry, Jr., Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services
were held Tuesday, April 22 at the United Baptist Church at
Williamsport
with the Revs. U.S. Walters, F.F. Rigsby and W. Meek officiating.
Burial
was in the Butcher Cemetery under the direction of the Preston Funeral

An illness of
one week was fatal to Mrs. Jane Castle, 67, who died at 1:15 a.m.
Monday
at her home at Nippa, Kentucky. Born in Johnson County, August 19,
1884,
where she has been a lifelong resident, Mrs. Castle was the daughter of
the late James and Rena Patrick Saddler. She was a member of the
Freewill Baptist Church. She was married to Jakey Castle, her first
husband
who has been dead about thirty years and later married to Hayes Castle
who succumbed in recent years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs.
Davie
Castle, of Nippa, Kentucky; five sons, James M. Castle, Lenzie W.
Castle,
W. F. Castle, Don Castle and Jakey Castle, Jr., all of Nippa, Kentucky;
two sisters, Mrs. Sallie McKenzie, of Middlefork, Kentucky, and Mrs.
Cleve
Castle, of Lowmansville, Kentucky; and two brothers, Tom Saddler and
Millard
Saddler, both of Nippa, Kentucky. Funeral services were held at 2:00
p.m.
yesterday at the home with the Reverends Claude Preston, Bruce Daniel,
and Don Fraley officiating, and music was furnished by the Toms Creek
Quartet.
Burial was made in the family cemetery under the direction of the

Sudden illness
claimed two-year-old Bobby Clark, infant son of Johnnie and Clotine
Spears
Clark, of Amherstdale, W. Va., who died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 22,
1952,
in a local hospital. The child was born March 8, 1950 in Johnson
County.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 1952, at
the
home of Banner Spears, near Denver, Ky., with Rev. Grover Fannin
officiating.
Burial will take place in the Spradlin cemetery nearby under the
direction

For Prominent Auto Dealer
Ben H. Cox, 63,
prominent businessman of this city, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after an
illness of five years. He suffered a stroke about three years
ago,
but his death was attributed to a heart ailment. Mr. Cox had been in
the
automobile and garage business here for about 25 years and was owner of
the Cox Motor Company, Cox Appliance Company, Paintsville Sales and
Service,
and Cox Auto Parts, all of Paintsville; Valley Motor Car Company of
Prestonsburg,
and Cox Auto Parts of Pikeville. He was an outstanding civic leader and
at the time of his death was a member of the Paintsville Water
Commission
and member of the Board of Directors of the Second National
Bank.
He was also a member of the Paintsville Kiwanis Club and the Odd
Fellows
Lodge of this city. He was born in Wise County, Virginia on
January
13, 1889 and was a son of William H. and Hannah Davidson Cox. A deacon
of the Southside Freewill Baptist Church he was directly responsible
for
the erection of the edifice in the Southside community. He gave
much
of his time and effort as well as material means to the work of the
church.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Wheeler Cox, two sons, James David Cox,
of
this city, Seaman Thomas Newell Cox, Aberdeen, Md., one grandchild; and
one brother and two sister, E.D. Cox, Beuna Parks, California, Mrs..
Mary
McKenzie, Evarts, Washington, and Mrs. J.D. Bond, Red Bush. Funeral
services
will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 18, at the Freewill Baptist
Church,
Southside by the Reverend Homer E. Willis, assisted by other ministers.
Music will be furnished by the Paintsville Quartet. Interment will be
made
in the Cox cemetery under the direction of the Preston Funeral
Home.

For Well Known Van Lear Resident Mrs. Emma Hyden DeLong, 61, died at a
local hospital at 10:45 a.m. April 10, after an illness of several
years.
Born June 29, 1890, the daughter of Sam and Alice Rice Hyden, she was a
life-long resident of West Van Lear. She was a member of the Christian
Church. Survivors include her husband, W.M. DeLong, two sons and three

Mrs. Rachel
Estep,
73, Fuget, Ky., died Sunday morning April 13, at a local hospital as
the
result of a heart attack suffered Friday. A native of Johnson County,
she
was born May 3, 1878, the daughter of Lilburn and Rachel Lemaster
Estep.
She had lived in this vicinity all of her life., and she was a
member
if the United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Elza Estep on February 5, 1952. Surviving are five sons and three
daughters,
William, Thelma, Ky., Glenn and Lundy both of Fuget and Floyd and
Lowell both of Fairborn Ohio, Mrs. Clara Frazier, Flat Gap, Mrs. Vernie
Baldwin, Staffordsville and Mrs. Myrtle Burchett, Elna. Funeral

were held Tuesday, April 15 at 10 a.m. at the home of her daughter,

Rachel S.
Estep
was born May 3, 1878 the daughter of Lilburn and Rachel Lemaster Estep.
She departed this life April 13, 1952 age 73 years, 11 months and 10
days.
She was married to Elzie Estep April 27, 1894 who preceded her in
death,
two months and eight days ago. To this union were born 13 children,
eight
of whom are still living and five having died in infancy. Those living
are: Llioyd Estep, Fairborn Ohio, William Estep, Thelma, Ky, Lundy and
Glen Estep of Fuget, Ky and James Estep, Fairborn, Ohio; three
daughters,
Mrs. James L Frazier, Flat Gap, Ky., Mts. Elie Baldwin, Staffordsville
and Mrs. Ray Burchett, elna, also a host of grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
She was converted and joined the United Baptist Church on Jan 11, 1931
and lived a devote Christian life until death. Her life was a shining
light
to all who knew her. Sleep on, dear mother, sleep on, Sweet be the rest
you've needed so long. We loved you dearly, but God loved you best, So

Cleve Howe, 71,
brother of Mrs. I. D. Preston, Williamsport, died April 17, 1952, at
Hayswood
Hospital, Maysville, Ky., after a long illness. He was born in Johnson
County August 31, 1880, the son of the late J. H. and Minta Separs
Howe,
pioneer residents of Paintsville. He had lived much of his life
in
mason County, where he enjoyed high esteem as a fine man and a good
farmer.
His
wife, Mrs. Nora Brown Howe, preceded him in death May 26, 1943.
Surviving
are five sons, four daughters, three sisters and two brothers and
nineteen
grandchildren Those from Williamsport attending the funeral were
Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Preston and Daughter, Patty, and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil
Wallen. Funeral services were held at the J. W. Porter and Sons Funeral
Home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with burial following in the Wedonia

Services
were held April 14 at Regina, Ky., for Elize Hunt, 59 former resident
of
Johnson County. Mr. Hunt died at the Methodist Hospital in Pikeville on
April 11, 1952 following a three months illness. A coal miner, he was a
member of the UMW and a veteran of World War I. He was born on March
11,
1893, the son of Jim and Victoria Franklin Hunt. He was reared at
East Point and had resided at Regina for 25 years. Surviving are three
daughters Anne Mae McCoy, Elsie Justice, and Josephine Hunt, all of
Regina;
a brother, Albert Hunt, Chapman and four sisters, Anna Lee Hunt, Dolly
Thacker, Tennie Thacker, all of Regina, and Toode Bolden, Beaver Creek.

for Mrs. Emma W. Jollifee, 70, formerly secretary t the late John C. C.
Mayo for 25 years, were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at the Louisa, Ky.,
Methodist
church with the Reverends E. P. Swann and Charles Perry
officiating.
Burial was made in the Pinehill cemetery. She died last Thursday,
at her home, Route 1, Louisa, following an illness of nine months.
Since
her tenure for a quarter of a century here as an office aid to Mayo,
pioneer
in developing the coal industry in Eastern Kentucky, she became an
active
worker in civic, church and political circles in Lawrence county. A
member
of the First Methodist Church for 45 years, Mrs. Jollifee was past
president
of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the church and a charter
member of Louisa Chapter DAR, and the Louisa Woman's Club. She was born
in Louisa, March 13, 1882, a daughter of the late Eugene and Josephine
Layne Wallace. Her husband, J. U. Jollifee, died in 1942.
Surviving
are one daughter Mrs. Joe Willis Pigg, Louisa, one brother, Laban E.

Rowland, 74, died at her home at Red Bush, Monday, April 14, 1952, of a
heart ailment and pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the home
Wednesday,

officiating.
She was the daughter of Preston and Nancy Trimble Bollin, and the widow
of Armstrong Rowland. She is survived by four children, Vesta Salyer,
Pearlie
Salyer, both of Red Bush, Dessie Lewis, Eldridge, Ky., and Eckell
Rowland
of Red Bush. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bessie Rowland .
Other survivors include 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She
was a member of the Red Bush Interprise Baptist Church and a
devoted
Christian. she was a kind and loving mother and loved by all who
knew her. All you do for Jesus is all that counts she said. These words
she often repeated while she lay on her death bed. Then she said
good-bye
to those she did adore. And went to live with loved ones who have gone

cancer, after an illness of six months. She was born at River, November
17, 1881, the daughter of James A. and Miranda Ward Spears. She was a

of the United Baptist Church. Her first husband, W.J. Preston,
Sr.,
preceded her in death, October 09, 1924. She was later married to
Julius Spears, who died July 31, 1947. Surviving are four daughters and

were held for Mrs. Sarah Jane Spradlin, 79, wife of Sheridan Spradlin
of
Kingsport, Tennessee, at the Christian Church at East Point, Kentucky,
with the Rev., S. B. Honeycutt officiating. Mrs. Spradlin died early
Sunday
morning at a Lexington, Ky., hospital after being critically ill since
Christmas of a lingering illness. Prior to entering the Lexington
hospital, she was at a hospital at Fleming after becoming bedfast at
the
home of a daughter, Mrs. Ted Blankenship, Neon, Ky. Affectionately
known
by her many friends here as "Sally" , she was well-known and widely
related
in Johnson county and Eastern Kentucky. The daughter of John and
Minerva
Music, she was born in Johnson county February 25, 1873. She was
a member of the Christian Church. Surviving besides her husband are two
sons, Cecil Spradlin, Dorchester, Va., and Taft Spradlin, Dayton, Ohio,

STAFFORD, Jimmy

Jimmy Stafford,
14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Stafford, died at St. Mary's Hospital
in Huntington, Tuesday, April 8, at 11:30 p.m., after an illness of
several
months. A life-long resident of Paintsville, he was a student in the
seventh
grade when he was stricken with Hodgekins Disease last year. Despite
his
serious illness, Jimmy had been active in neighborhood
activities.
He had taken a paper route and had taken photography as a new
hobby.
He suffered a fatal attack last week and was moved to the Huntington
hospital.
Survivors besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Webb and
Mrs.
Dorothy Reid, both of Charlotte, N. C., one brother, Gordon Stafford,
of
Charlotte, N. C., and one half-brother, Earl Stafford, of Ashland,
Kentucky.
Funeral services will be in the Stafford Cemetery at Staffordsville
under

Funeral services
for Mrs. Anna Salyer Tackett, 72, of Wheelersburg, Ky., were held at 10
a. m. Monday at the United Baptist Church at Wheelersburg, with the
Reverends
Lonza Reed, Ham Jenkins, and Dona Conley officiating. She succumbed at
11 p. m. Friday at her home after an illness of only a few days. A
native
of Morgan county, she was the daughter of the late Preston and Ellen
Holbrook
Kimbleton. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. She was
first married to Levi Salyer and later wedded to George Tackett.
Both preceded her in death. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ira
Cantrell, of Minefork, Ky., Mrs. Clyde Bayes and Mrs. Jim Cheek, both
of
Mechaniesburg, O.; four sons, Tona S. Salyer, of Wheelersburg, Ky.,
Granville
Salyer, of Springfield, O., and Fonza Salyer, of Mechaniesburg, O.; one
brother, Lee Kimbleton, of Paintsville, and one sister, Mrs. Croshie
Blanton,
of Rice, Ky., in Greenup county. Following the services, burial was
made
in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral
Home.

Funeral Services
Sat. for Tutor Key Woman Mrs. Louisa (Aunt Lou) Van Hoose, 88, died at
her home at Tutor Key, Ky., at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning after an
illness
of several months. The daughter of Wes and Lina Wellman, she was born
January
22, 1864, in Lawrence county. She had lived at Tutor Key most of
her life, and was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Van Hoose, who
died in August, 1912. Surviving are eight daughters and three sons,
Mrs.
Matt Sublett, of this city, Mrs. Robert Castle, Tutor Key, Mrs.
Lawrence
Fairchild and Mrs. Lewis Isaacs, both of Lowmansville, Mrs. Frank
Witen,
Sitka, Mrs. Earl Daniel, West Van Lear, Miss Gypsy Van Hoose, Tutor
Key,
Mrs. Verner Castle, Chas. Ky., Hansel VanHoose, Wittensville, and Guy
and
Wes Van Hoose, both of Tutor Key. Funeral services will be held at
10:30
am, Saturday, May 3, at the Free Will Baptist Church at Nippa, Ky.,
with
Revs. Millard Van Hoose and Claude Preston, officiating. The Toms
Creek Quartet will sing hymns. Burial will be in the family
cemetery
