Branham, 18 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Branham, of this
city,
died in a local hospital on April 5, after an illness of two days.
Surviving,
besides the parents, are two brothers and four sisters, all at home.
Burial
was made in the family cemetery at Boons Camp under the direction of
the

Rev. Dewey Brown,
52, died in his home at relief Ky. following an illness of several
months.
Born in Morgan County February 24, 1901 he was the son of W.N. and
Angeline
Hill Brown. He had resided in Relief for a number of years. A
construction
worker and builder by occupation, he was also a minister of the
Enterprise
Baptist Church at Red Bush and the Smokey Valley Valley Church in
Louisa
at the time of his death. He was a former pastor of the Westwood
Enterprise
Church in Ashland. Surviving are his wife, Etta Gambill Brown, four
sons,
Dewey E. Brown Jr., Ashland, Proctor S. Brown, Dayton Ohio, James A.
Brown
and Jackie Brown both of Relief. Other survivors include three
brothers,
Ernest Brown, Catlettsburg, Edward Brown Relief, and two sisters, Mrs.
Maxie Williams, East Chicago, Indiana and Mrs. Effie Coldron,
Fayetteville,
Ohio. Funeral services were held at 10:30 Wednesday morning at the
Paint
Valley Church at Relief with the Revs. A. C. Bradley, Bruce Daniel,
Cason
Davis, Kelley McGraw and Bill Hill officiating. Internment was made in
the family cemetery at relief under the direction of the Paintsville

Funeral services
were held Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cantrell of Fuget for
Mrs. Mary Burchwell, 76, lifelong resident of Johnson County, who died
April 15, following an illness of several months. The daughter of Noble
and Jane Rowland Adams, she was born January 22, 1877, in Johnson
County.
She was first married to John Cantrell, and following his death she
married
Edwin Burchwell, who also preceded her in death. Surviving are two
sons,
Henry Cantrell, Fuget, and Albert Cantrell, Columbus, Ohio, and one
daughter,
Mrs. Beulah Mathews, Hit Hat, Ky. Other survivors include three
brothers,
John Adams, Fuget and Joe Adams and Levi Adams, both of Ohio. Interment
was made in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville

Mrs. Alva Carter,
51, wife of Cecil Carter and former resident of this city, died in a
hospital
in Cleveland, Ohio, at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, April 1, after an illness of
six days. She was a sister of Matthew Gullett of this city. A daughter
of the late Charlie and Cynthia Ann Litteral Gullett, she was born in
this
county, February 27, 1902. Her early girlhood was spent in this city
where
she attended Paintsville City School. She was married in 1921 and she
and
her husband had been making their home in Ohio for the past ten years.
Surviving besides her husband and brother are three children, one
daughter,
Mrs. Elizabeth Towkowski, Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, John and George
Carter,
both of Cleveland; also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Vadie Kimbler,
Evanston, KY; and Mrs. Ida Wagner, Ashland. Funeral services were
conducted
at 2:30 PM April 5, at the Pentecostal Church of Christ in this city by
Rev. Harry Salyer. Burial was made in the Town cemetery under the
direction

Funeral services
were held at the Ventus Branch School in Martin County for James Addie
Cook, 48, who succumbed Monday April 1953 after an illness of several
years.
Death was attributed to a heart Ailment. Born October 24, 1904, at
Debord,
Ky., he was the son of Samuel and Siller Crum Cook. He was a coal
miner by occupation. Surviving are his father, three daughters, four
sons,
three sister and four brothers. Interment was made in the Cook
cemetery,

Mrs. Elizabeth
Perry Daniel, 72, Eminence, Ky., formerly of this city, died April 22,
at the Shady Grove Nursing Home at Eminence following an illness of
several
months. Born May 24, 1880 at Paintsville, she was the daughter of
George
and Lavinia Davis Perry. She had been a resident of Eminence for
two years. She was first married to Charles Fischer who preceded her in
death. To this union was born one son, Kenneth Fischer, who now resides
at Ocala, Florida. She then married Dr. D. H. Daniel, prominent
physician
of this city. To this union were born four sons, D. H. Daniel,
Jr.,
of Louisville; Vivian Daniel, Miami, Florida; Jack Daniel, Miami,
Florida,
and Walter Daniel, deceased; three daughters, Mrs. Josephine Sampsell,
Keaton, Ohio; Mrs. Anna Saxton, Louisville, and Mrs. Katheryn Royce,
Eminence.
Surviving besides the four sons and three daughters are the following
brothers
and sisters; Walter Perry and Albert Perry, both of West Virginia;
George
Perry and Mrs. W. R. Meade, both of this city; Mrs. Charles Perry,
Louisa;
Mrs. Alice Hagger, Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Ethel Hall, Catlettsburg.
Funeral
services were conducted at the Mayo Church April 24 with the Rev. J. I.
Meyer officiating. Interment was made in the Mayo Cemetery under the
direction
of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Acting pallbearers were the nephews,

Kenneth

Urchill Daniel,
63, died suddenly at his home at Thealka Monday. Death was
attributed
to a heart attack. Born at Thealka September 1, 1890, he was the son of
Winifred and Sally Adams Daniel. He was a retired coal miner. He
was married in 1910 to Grace Clark who survives. Surviving besides his
wife are four sons, Bill Daniel, Isom Daniel, and Shade Daniel, all of
Thealka, and Bert Daniel, Wharton, W. Va.; three daughters, Helen
Caudill,
Bob-White, W. Va., May Preston, city; Frances Sherman, Thealka; and 25
grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at
the home with the Rev. Raymond Dale officiating. Music will be by
the Paintsville Quartet. Burial will be made in the family cemetery
under
the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. .

Mrs. Elizabeth
Harris Gambill, 74, died at her home at River, Saturday April 24 1953,
following an illness of 7 years. Death was attributed to a heart
condition. The daughter of Harmon and Angeline Harris, she was born May
29 1878, in Prestonsburg. She had been a resident of River for 54
years. She was married October, 1899 to John C. Gambill, who survives.
Surviving besides the husband are three sons, Harry E. Gambill,
Lancaster,
Ohio, Harmon H. Gambill, River, and John C. Gambill, Jr., Ironton,
Ohio;
and four daughters, Mrs. Ida Mae Wigglesworth, Pikeville, Mrs. Huthell
Spears and Mrs. Milford Sturgill, both of Ironton, Ohio, and Mrs.
Thomas
Roberts, of this city; one brother, Malcom Harris, Prestonsburg, 16
grandchildren
and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the United
Baptist
Church at River Tuesday with the Revs. Cullie Sparks and German
Walters

in Wayne, West Virginia, September 11, 1879 she was the daughter of

and Emevah Williamson Bailey. She had been a resident of Tomahawk for

87, life-long resident of Manilla, died at the home of his son, Luther
Lemaster of Manilla, Thursday, April 30, 1953, following an illness of
several months. The son of the late Isaac and Mary Barker Lemaster, he
was born December 28, 1865. He was a retired farmer. His first marriage
was to Nora Williams and following he death he married Elizabeth
Stapleton
who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his third wife, Minta
Estep Lemaster. Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Luther
Lemaster,
of Manilla, Elbert Lemaster, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Auta Lemaster,
Marysville,
Ohio, Perry Lemaster, Ashland; three daughters, Mrs. Alta Pelphrey,
Columbus,
Ohio, Mrs. Carrie Ramey, Volga, Mrs. Effie Lemaster, Win; and one
sister,
Mrs., Sarah Jane Cox, Huntington, W. Va. Funeral services were held at
the Luther Lemaster home Sunday with the Revs. Lonza Reed and Scott
Castle
officiating. Music was by the Paintsville Quartet. Active pallbearers

Lewis, he was born July 9, 1887, in Virginia. He had been a
resident
of Williamsport for 8 years. Surviving are his wife Gypsie Robinson

one son, Raymond Lewis, North Dakota; and two daughters, Irene Jenkins,
Hunington, W. Va., and Evelyn England, Jenkins, Ky. Other survivors

Forest McCarty,
72, died at his home at Flat Gap Tuesday following an illness of a
year.
Born in Johnson County October 18, 1880, he was the son of the late

H and Sarah Coldiron McCarty. He was a farmer and carpenter by
occupation.
Affiliated with the United Baptist Church, he was baptised at Fish Trap
January 11, 1904. Survivors include his wife, Rosie Curtis McCarty, six
sons, Willie McCarty, city, Emery McCarty, Ashland, Willis McCarty,
Dayton,
Ohio, Jay McCarty, Ashland, Virgil and Burley McCarty, both of Aid, O.
Other survivors are two brothers, Oscar and Clifton McCarty, both of
Manila,

and Mrs. Mollie Lemaster, Manila. Funeral services will be conducted at

Landrum Miller,
87, lifelong resident of Tomahawk, died at the home of his daughter,
Mrs.
G.W. Baldridge, April 4. Born March 11, 1866, at Stidham, Ky., he was
the
son of Sylvester and Elizabeth Williamson Miller. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Mary Ward Miller. Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. W.G. Baldridge, Tomahawk, Mrs. Lucy Roselle, Springfield, Ohio,
and
Mrs. ???? Mills, Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services were held Sunday at the
home with burial in the Baldridge family cemetery. Internment was made

MOLLETTE, Emma

Funeral services
for Mrs. Emma Cline Mollette of Boon Camp, who died in a local hospital
Wednesday morning, April 15, were held at the Boons Camp Freewill
Baptist
Church, of which she was a member, at 10 a. m. Friday. Mrs. Mollette,
78
years old, had been in poor health for several months. Mrs. Mollette
was
born in Martin county, May 18, 1874, the daughter of Jake and Martha
Setzer
Cline. Following her marriage to Elijah Mollette of Books Camp, the
couple
went to Johnson county where they began housekeeping and where they
lived
the remainder of their lives. Mr. Mollette, a merchant and farmer who
died
in 1939, had taken an active interest in politics and was well and
favorably
known throughout Eastern Kentucky. However, Mr. Mollette suffered a
serious
illness which for several years rendered him almost helpless. The
Mollettes
reared a large family, almost all of whom became school teachers.
One son, John B. Molette, served Johnson and Martin counties in the
Kentucky
legislature for three terms. Mrs. Mollette was affectionately knows as
"Aunt Emma". Always ready to praise her, Mrs. Mollette's neighbors
often
declared that, "If there ever was a good woman, Aunt Emma surely is
one."
Throughout her husband's illness, even through Aunt Emma had to be at
his
side at all hours of the day and night, she never lost her capacity for
greeting her family and her neighbors and friends with a smile and a
word
of kindness which everyone knew was straight from her heart. Mrs.
Mollette
is survived by three sons, Fred Mollette, Meally, Ky., John B.
Mollette,
Lorado, W. Va.; Burns Offutt Mollette, Columbus, Ohio; four daughters,
Mrs. Lizzie Colvin, Thealka; Mrs. Stella Fletcher, Books Camp; Mrs.
Amanda
Hollbrook, Paintsville; Mrs. Grance Preston, Williamsport; a brother,
Grover
Cline, Stidham, Ky., and a sister, Mrs. Liza Williamson, Inez. Walter

Meek of Paintsville sang at the services which were conducted by the

Dies; Buried At Zebulon N. B. ( Boney) Morris, 73, of Zebulon, father

Rel Morris of this city, died Thursday night April 9, 1953, at
his
home of a stroke. He had been ill three months. Born May 9, 1880 at
Zebulon
he was the son of Jake and Mary Jane Morris. He was preceded in
death
by his wife, Jenny Maynard Morris, who died last February. In younger
life
he was active as a farmer and lumber merchant. He was a member of
the Church of Christ. Surviving are three sons, Rel Morris,

Erwin Morris, Zebulon, Craft Morris, Pikeville; three daughters Mrs.

Born July 3, 1873 in Lawrence Co., KY, he was the son of the late

H. and Liddie Pack Preston. He was a farmer and miner. Surviving are
two
brothers, Frank Preston, Paintsville and Melvin Preston, Patrick, KY.
Funeral
services were held at the home of Melvin Preston at Patrick Friday with
the Revs Arthur Preece and Leonard Walters officiating. Interment
was made in the Preston Cemetery at Patrick under the direction of the

Dies Sun. After Long Illness Funeral services were held at the East
Point
Church of Christ Monday for John W. Ramey 79, who died at his home at
East
Point Sunday, April 8, 1953 following a long illness of 15 years. The
son
of the Late Henry and Adeline Tackett Ramey, he was born June 4, 1872
in
Pike County, Ky. He head been a resident of East Point for 65
years.
Surviving are three sons, Willie, John H. and Walter Ramey, all of East
Point; two daughters, mars. Adeline Lily, East Point, and Mrs. Florence
Webb, Auxier, one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Elizabeth Hall, Meally,
Kelson Ramey Logan W.Va. and Jack Ramey. Internment was made in the

of two years. A life-long resident of Barnetts Creek, she was the
daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Will Mart Trimble. She was a member of the
Freewill
Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, John E. Ratliff; three sons,
Farmer Ratliff, Barnetts Creek, Freddy Ratliff, Staffordsville, and
Gordon
Ratliff, Jackson, Michigan; three daughters, Mrs. Glade Fraley, city,

SKAGGS, Edwin

PFC Edwin Skaggs,
Native of Johnson Killed in Action Rev. and Mrs. Brack Skaggs of
Gallipolis,
Ohio, have been notified that their son Pfc. Edwin Skaggs, 21, was
killed
in action in Korea April 17, 1953 Pfc. Skaggs was the grandson of Mr.
and
Mrs. Kennis Hatfield of Lowmansville and a nephew of Rev Walter Skaggs,
Jonah and Van Skaggs, also of Lowmansville. He was born at Lowmansville
February 22, 1932, and moved with his family to Gallipolis in
1948.
He hellped his father on the farm for some time and later went to
Columbus,
Ohio, where he worked in a bakery. He became a member of the Ohio
National Guard two years ago. He was sent overseas in December
after
training at Camp Polk, Louisiana. Pfc. Skaggs was engaged to miss
Lucille
Seagraves of Columbus, Ohio. The young soldier was a fine
Christian
boy, and well liked by his many friends. Surviving besides his parents
are the following brothers and sisters; Rev. Thurman Skaggs, who was
wounded
on Okinawa in World War II, Pfc. Arnold Skaggs and Pfc. Ernest Gene
Skaggs,
both now serving in Korea, Mrs. Annalee Borders, Columbus, Ohio, Roseta
Eunice Dean, Marvin Ray, and Floyd All at home. The body is expected to
arrive at the home of his parents some time in July. Funeral services
will
be conducted from the Enterprise Baptist Church in Gallipolis, Ohio,
with
Rev Fred Evans, and Rev. Bruce Daniels in charge of the services.

were conducted at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, April 11, for Mrs. Sarah
Turner,
wife of Will Turner of Oil Springs who died at her home at 6:45 p.m.,
Wednesday,
April 8 1953 after suffering a heart attack. She was an aunt of
Mr.
Carl Wynn of this city. Born in Virginia June 18, 1875 the daughter of
the later Mr. And Mrs. James W. Cheek, she had lived at Oil Springs for
the past fifteen years. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist
Church. Surviving besides her husband are five children; two daughters,
Mrs. H. C. Bolin, Oil Springs; Mrs. John Trimble, Jeffersonville, Ohio;
three sons, Charlie, Tomahawk; James, Ocala, Fla; Henry, Washington, C.
H. Ohio. Surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Della Wynn,
Ashland,
Mrs. Ira Cantrell, Ironton, Ohio, Mrs. Ollie Cantrell, Sunbury, O.,
Budge
Cheek, Tomahawk, Billy Cheek, Oil Springs. Nineteen grandchildren
also survive. Services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Bolen,
at Oil Springs with Rev. Claude Preston officiating. Burial was

the Litteral cemetery at Oil Springs under the direction of the Preston

Funeral services
were held at the Meade Memorial Gymnasium Sunday for Lowell Mack Ward,
21, of Boons Camp, who died on April 18 from wounds received in action
in Korea. Henry Stamper, Dunlow WV and Newton Daniel, McDowell, Ky.,
were
the officiating ministers. Born September 8, 1931 he was the son of
Mrs.
Vinnie Fitch Ward and the late William Jeff S. Ward of Boons Camp. He
was
married July 6, 1951, to Lois Avonell Wallen, who survives. Surviving
besides
his wife and mother are three brothers, Seldon Hank Ward, Charleston
WV,
Jeff Sherman Ward, Williamsport and John P. Ward, Boons Camp; three
sisters,

Elmon (Wad) Webb,
58, was killed Saturday night in a truck accident near the Tomahawk
Post
Office in Martin County. Details of the accident were incomplete. The
son
of the late Harmon Boone and Martha Burtchwell Webb, he was born in
Johnson
County January 6, 1895. He was a resident of West Van Lear at the time
of his death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Moore Webb, two
daughters;
Mrs. Roberta Meade, Richardson, Ky., and Mrs. Dorthy Thacker, Detroit,
Michigan; two brothers, Garland Webb and Jake Webb, both of West Van
Lear,
and one sister, Mrs. Margie Crum, of Fairborn, Ohio. Funeral services
were
held Tuesday at Wells Chapel at Boons Camp, with the Elders Leonard
Webb
and J.H. Short officiating. Burial was made in the Wells Cemetery at
Boons
Camp under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home. Paintsville Herald

84, PASSES APRIL 20 IN MONTANA Services at Great Falls For Native
of County Jasper M. Wheeler, 84, native of Johnson County, died in a
hospital
at Great Falls, Montana, April 20. He had made his home in the west for
the past thirty-four years, but was well known in this section as he
had
returned frequently for visits with many relatives and numerous
friends.
He was born August 17, 1868 at Chandlerville, the son of the late Bill
and Nancy Green Wheeler. His early life was spent in this county, where
he was married fifty-seven years ago to Luella Williams, who survives
him.
In April 1919 at the age of forty-nine, he moved to Cut Bank, Montana,
where he and his son-in-law, Arthur Davis entered the mercantile
business.
He retired from this business in 1943 and moved to Kalispell and Big
Fork,
Montana He was a member of the United Baptist Church at Mt. Olive, Ky.,
and was a deacon of this church. His interest in the church continued
throughout
his stay in the West, and he remained active and devoted to its
services.
He often held prayer services in his own home and was the leader in
these
meetings as well as in many other Church services. In later years
failing
health forced him to refrain from active participation in church
affairs,
but he continued to be a constant reader of the Bible and also derived
much enjoyment from the gospel songs. Besides his widow he is survived
by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Davis, two grandchildren, Dr. Jasper
Wesley
Davis, McNary Az. and Mrs. C. N. Youngstrom Great Falls, Montana. Four
great- grandchildren also survive. Officiating ministers at the
services
were held in Great Falls were Roscoe Stevens, Dutton, and Perry Daniel
with many others from Kentucky in attendance. Internment was in the
Great

Dies In Ohio Hospital Mary Louise Williams, infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Williams, Jr., died April 05, at a Columbus, Ohio, hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at the United Baptist Church at
Barnetts
Creek with the Revs. Lonza Reed and Foster Rigsby officiating. Burial
was
made in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville
