WARD, Daniel Webster
1869-1954
Funeral services were conducted from the Mayo Memorial Methodist Church
today at 2:00 p.m., for Daniel Webster Ward, 85, who died suddenly at
his home on Second Street Monday. Death was caused by a heart
attack and occurred about 11:00 a.m., as he lay down to rest.
Apparently in good health the day before, he had attended both of the
Sunday church services, and his unexpected death was a great shock to
his family and friends. Born in Inez, Ky. March 20, 1869, he was the
son of the late George Washington and Nancy Clay Ward and was one of
triplets. The three lived to celebrate their 75th birthdays on
which occasion a reunion was held at the old home place at Inez.
Two of the triplets, Henry C. and Peter F., preceded him in death and
only one brother, Grover C. Ward of Inez survives from a family of
thirteen children. Mr. Ward had been a resident of Paintsville for the
past fifty years. He was married February 16, 1893, to Stella
Walker, daughter of Rev. John W. and Rebecca Vaughn Walker of this
city, who preceded him in death February 14, 1948. He was a faithful
member of the Mayo Memorial Methodist Church and since early manhood
had been devoted and loyal to its principles. Directing his
energies toward the advancement of its interests, his life was a
testimonial to the quiet strength of his convictions. "Little Dan", as
he was affectionately called by his many friends, was small in stature
only, possessing great tolerance and understanding, a great capacity
for friendship, and a great compassion for his fellow man. His
abiding loyalty to his friends was matched by his sense of honor and
his kindness to all with whom he came in contact. His pleasant
smile and friendly manner won him a host of friends wherever he went.
Following his marriage he lived in Catlettsburg for a short while
and returning to Paintsville became associated with Webb & Preston
of this city. He later became one of the city;s most prominent
businessmen when he established, together with Sam Copley and the late
John W. Preston, the firm of Copley, Ward & Preston, which for
forty- five years was one of the leading mercantile establishments in
this section. He served two terms as Police Judge of the City of
Paintsville and ably discharged the duties of this office in a
conscientious manner. Survivors include besides his brother, two
daughters, Mrs. Freda Willoughby of this city and Mrs. James A. Ramsey
of Ashland; one son, Eugene R. Ward, Cincinnati, O.; three
grandchildren, Miss Jean Ward, New York City; Mrs. J. S. Penn,
