Born in Inez, Ky. March 20, 1869, he was the son of the late George Washington and Nancy Clay Ward and was one of triplets.  The three lived to celebrate their 75th birthdays on which occasion a reunion was held at the old home place at Inez.  Two of the triplets, Henry C. and Peter F., preceded him in death and only one brother, Grover C. Following his marriage  he lived in Catlettsburg for a short while and returning to Paintsville became associated with Webb & Preston of this city. He later became one of the city;s most prominent businessmen when he established, together with Sam Copley and the late John W.
