Mrs. Rosie Blair,
83, died Wednesday, April 20, 1955 at 10:30 p.m. at the home of her
daughter,
Mrs. Dewey Blair of Denver with whom she had been living. Death was
caused
by a stroke following a five-year illness. Born in Johnson County
August
12, 1871, the daughter of the late Ned and Nancy Morton Blair, she had
been a lifelong resident of the Denver section. She was preceded in
death
by her husband, Floyd Blair, September 1, 1949. Survivors include the
one
daughter and two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Conley, Collista and Mrs. Hayden
Conley,
Hager Hill. Funeral services were conducted from the home Friday at
1:00
p.m. by Rev. Charlie Lemastser. Burial followed in the family cemetary
at Denver under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home.

Funeral services
well be held Thursday at one o’clock at the home at Volga, KY; for Mrs.
Addie Blanton, 70, who died Thursday morning April 22, 1955 in a
local hospital following an illness of three weeks. The daughter of the
late Charlie and Mary Ann Cantrell Prichard. She was born march
31,
1885 in Johnson County. Survivors include the husband, George Blanton,
three sons, Charley, Sanford and George Blanton, Jr. all of
Volga,
one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Pelphrey, Volga, Two Sisters, Mrs. John K.
Cantrell,
Flat Gap, and Mrs. Monroe Wheeler , Paintsville. Burial will be in the
family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

CASTLE, Arthur

A coroner's
report
is expected to be made Thursday on the mysterious death of Arthur
Castle,
33, whose body was recovered Sunday afternoon from the Big Sandy River
near the mouth of Muddy Branch. He had been missing from his home
in Thealka since April 19. Born April 31, 1922 at Thealka, he was the
son
of Mrs. Addie Castle Castle and the late Jim R. Castle. He made his
home
with his mother and daughter, Sevilla Sue. The victim was
employed
as a miner at David, Ky, where he had been working for the last six
years.
Surviving besides his mother and daughter are two brothers, Arnold and
Clyde Castle, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; two half brothers, Edgar and
Murner
Castle, both of Thealka, and one half sister, Mrs. Myrtle Kerr, Card,
Michigan.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday morning at the home of Edgar Castle
at Thealka. Burial was in the Castle Cemetery at Rock House under the
direction

Arthur is listed as missing since April 19,
buried the day before the obit which is listed as Wednesday April
20. It says the body was recovered on Sunday. KY Vitals
lists Arthur as dying on April 25 -- which is Monday & the body was
found on Sunday.....All mixed up I guess!

Dies at Louisa Mrs. Martha Lemaster Caudill, 43 wife of Kirk Caudill of
Louisa, KY died Friday afternoon, April 25, 1955 at her home. Born May
4, 1911 in Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Manford and
Ora
Lemaster. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving besides the
husband are two daughters Esthelene and Hermagene Caudill at home;
eight
sons, Kirk Caudill Jr., Fort Gay, W Va. and Ted, Jim, Ivan, Harold,
Robert,
Eddie, Lester and Leland Caudill, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Curtis

Louisa and one grandchild, Graveside rites were conducted Sunday, April

Warnie Caudill,
54, died suddenly Wednesday morning, April 27, 1955 in a local
hospital.
Death was attributed to a heart attack. The son of the late Hayden and
Della Lewis Caudill, he was born in Johnson County July 30, 1900. He
had
been a resident of Auxier for 35 years. He is survived by his wife,
Stella
May Selvage Caudill, three sons, Edmond and Frank Caudill, both of
Auxier,
and Jarles Caudill, Coloumbus, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Wanda June
Pitts,
Hammond, Ind, and Betty Jewel Caudill, Auxier. Other survivors include
three sister, Mrs. Garcia Spradlin, Denver, Mrs Dorthy Blanton,
Leander,
Mrs. Bessie Burton, Cincinnati, Ohio, and one brother, Winnie Caudill,
Auxier, Ky. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Auxier Freewill
Baptist Church witht the Rev. William Horn, officiating. Burial was
made
in the Government Cemetery at Auxier under the direction of the Jones
and

will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday from the chapel of the
Paintsville
Funeral Home for George E. Clark, 79, well-known resident of the city
who
died at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 1955. Although he had been
in
ill health for several months, his sudden death was a shock to his many
friends in this section. Veteran employee of the C. & C. Railroad
Company,
he retired five years ago, after fifty years of service. Before
his
retirement he was general chairman of. P. T., C. & O. Railroad.
Born
in Clay Village, Ky., the son of the late David and Judith Saunders
Clark,
he had lived in Paintsville for the past forty-seven years. His
likable
personality and genial disposition won him many friends and had made
him
a beloved and respected member of the community. He was a member
of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eva Rice
Clark; three children, one daughter, Mrs. Martha Borden,
Lexington;
two sons, Creaton and Ogden Clark, both of Winchester. Surviving also
is
a brother, Caddis Clark, Shelbyville. Funeral services will be
conducted
by the Rev. Ralph, E. Webb, former pastor of the First Baptist Church
in
this city. Burial will follow in the Mayo Cemetery under the direction

Clifton, wife of Judge Clifton of Van Lear, died in a local hospital
Friday,
April 15, 1955, after an illness of a day. The daughter of the
late
Newton and Callie Wallen, she was born in Floyd County. She had
been
a resident of Van Lear for 28 years. Surviving besides the husband are
three sons, Frank D. and George Clifton, Van Lear, Judge Clifton, Jr.,
Hampton, Va., two daughters, Mrs. Flossie Chandler, Lowmansville, Mrs.
Sally Spears, Van Lear,; four brothers, Alex, Will, Shell and Elmon
Wallen,
all of Floyd County; four half sisters, Mrs. Susie Hubbard, Mrs. Fannie
Clifton, Mrs. Lizzie Akers and Mrs. Pearl Moore, all of Floyd County
and
three half-brothers, Jack, Oscar, and Walter Wallen, all of Floyd
County.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Van Lear Freewill
Baptist
Church with Rev. Edgar Hewlett officiating. Burial was made in the
family
cemetery at Van Lear under the direction of the Jones and Preston

1881,
in Johnson County, a daughter of the late Clayborne and Sarah E.
Williams
Bishop. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Besides her
sister
she is survived by her husband, Edward Dills; six daughter, Mrs. Grace
Jordan, Catlettsburg, Ky, Mrs. Alta Powell, Flatwoods, Mrs. Stella
Hackworth,
Ashland, Mrs. Jessie Dixon, Ashland, Mrs. Edna McNeal, Mrs. Irene
Balealtia
of Ashland; three sons, Roy Dills of Ashland, Hubert Dills of Hamden,
Ohio
and Gene Dills at home. One son, Norman Dills, preceded her in death;
four
brothers, George Bishop, Ashland, Moody Bishop of Lodi, Ohio, Claude
Bishop,
Catlettsburg and Clyde Bishop of Springfield, Ohio; one other sister,
Mrs.
Ethel Mills, Springfield, Ohio and 12 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday April 21 from the Miller
Funeral
Home at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Nickell. Burial followed in the Ashland

9 Six-Week Illness Fatal To Malla Frazier
Mrs. Malla
Frazier,
widow of D. W. Frazier, died at 3:20 a. m., Saturday, April 9, 1955 at
her home on Preston Street, after an illness of six-weeks. Mrs. Frazier
was born at Sandy Hook, Elliott County, on October 13, 1882, the
daughter
of Bucker and Lydia McDowell Salyer. When she was a child her parents
moved
to Kerz in this county where she was reared. She was married to D. W.
Frazier
on March 7, 1901. To this union were born two daughters, Cova and
Clova who died in infancy. After her marriage, Mrs. Frazier lived
on the head of Mud Lick Creek at Red Bush until 1924, when she moved to
Paintsville where she resided for the remainder of her life. She was
converted
and joined the United Baptist Bethel Church at Flat Gap on January 26,
1900. Mrs. Frazier was considered a great pillar in the church during
her
lifetime. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Rex Picklesimer, one
granddaughter,
Nelldred Picklesimer, both of Welch, W. VA, two sisters, A. B. Murray,
Louisa, and Mrs. Garland Frazier, Sciotoville, Ohio; three brothers,
Irvin
Salyers, and Minyard Salyers, Adams KY, Herbert Salyers, Kerz, and a
host
of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at Bethel Church
at
10:30 a. m. Monday by the Rev. Lonza Reed and the Reverend Tommy
Bailey.
Burial was in the Salyer Cemetery at Flat Gap under the direction of
the

Sandra Gayle
Green, 11 month-old daughter of Jimmy Green and Carmen Rice Green,
Sitka,
died in a local hospital, Tuesday, April 27, following an illness of a
week. Surviving besides the parents are three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Sitka Freewill Baptist
Church
with Rev. C. C. Hall officiating. Burial was made in the family
cemetery
at Sitka under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home.

John A. Horn,
80, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the home of his son, Robie
Horn,
of Rock House, following an illness of several months. Born December
23,
1874, he was the son of Tom and Mary Combs Horn. A lifelong resident of
Rock House, he was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Freewill
Baptist
Church. He was married to Minerva VanHoose Horn, who preceded him in
death
in January 1951. He is survived by two sons, Norman Horn, city and
Robie
Horn, Rock House; two daughters, Mrs. Martvel Stone, New Boston, Ohio
and
Mrs. Olna Harris, Portsmouth, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 26
greatgrandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Jess Horn, Staffordsville, Albert
Horn
and Walker Horn, both of Rock House. Funeral services were conducted at
1 p.m. today at the home of his son, Brobie Horn. Officiating
ministers
were Claude Preston and Charlie Lemaster and music was by the Tom`s
Creek
Quartet. Burial was made in the family cemetery under the direction of

77, died at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 1955, at his home in Thelma
following
an illness of a year. A resident of Thelma for 15 years, he was a
retired
miner. Surviving besides his wife, Martilie Bowens Smith, are three

Sam Smith, Williamsport, Estill and Carl Smith, both of Thelma; and
three
daughters, Mrs. Ruth Robinette and Mrs. Lora Wilburn, both of Alvin,

p.m. today (April 13, 1955) at the home with Rev. Henry Caudill
officiating.

IN OHIO MISHAP

For Clifford Spencer Clifford (Charles) Spencer, 32 was killed
instantly
Saturday night, when he was struck by an automobile near the
intersection
of US Routes 24 and 20 near Toledo, Ohio. Sheriff's Sergeant Walter
Reed
of Toledo, Ohio, said Mr. Spencer was struck by a car driven by Vincent
J Rachowiak, 60, also of Telodo, Ohio. Mr. Rachowiak said he did not
know
he had hit the man until he stopped his car after feeling a bump. He
was
booked as a witness at an inquest but was released on his own
recogniance.
Sergeant Reed said complaints had been received shortly before the
accident
from motorist who said a man answering Mr.Spencer's description was
walking
in front of cars in that vinicity. Spencer a native of Johnson County,
was the son of Dick and Recie Montgomery Spencer of Blackberry section
of Paintsville. He was a veteran od World War II, having served two
years
in the European Theater. He was awarded the EAME Theatre Ribbons with
two
Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. Surviving
besides his parents are one brother, George Spencer, city; and two
sisters,
Verlittle Poe, Ashtabula, Ohio and Lizzie Castle, city. Funeral will be
held Thursday at ?:00 p.m.at the family cemetery under the direction of

Spradlin, 77, died Saturday, April 16, 1955, at her home in Denver

a long illness. Her death was attributed to a stroke. Born July 19,
1877,
she was the daughter of the late William and Rachel Adams. A lifelong
county
resident, she was a member of the Denver Missionary Baptist Church. She
is survived by her husband, George B. Spradlin, eight sons, Clemons

Albert Spradlin, Wayne Spradlin, Earl Spradlin, Walter Spradlin,
Raymond
Spradlin, Georgia Spradlin, all of Denver, and Irvin Spradlin, City;
and

Spradlin 81, died suddenly Thursday morning at the home of her
daughter,
Mrs. Hobert Salyer of Oil Springs. The daughter of the late Elijah and
Nancy Adkins Cantrell, she was born in Johnson County November 2, 1873.
She was married November 2, 1894 to Andy Spradlin, who preceded her in
death August 13, 1921. Survivors include one son, Shay Spradlin,
Piketon,
Ohio, two daughters, Mrs. Hobart Salyer, Oil Springs, Mrs. Linnie
Lemaster,
Manila, one brother, Tom Cantrell, Win, Ky. thirteen grandchildren and
eight great- grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sundat at

Fish Trap Church with Lonza Reed, Oscar McCarty and John Pelphrey as

72, well known resident of River, Ky, died at his home Wednesday, April
27 1955, following an illness of three months. Born January 29, 1883 in
Johnson County, he was the son of the late James and Sarah Frances
Daniels
Walters. He was a farmer by occupation and a minister of the United
Baptist
Church. Surviving are his wife, Maude Boyd Walters, and four daughters,
Mrs. Elbert Castle, Ashland, Mrs. Sam Brickey, Huntington, W. Va., Mrs.
Dexter Castle, Tucson, Arizona, and Mrs. Don Meeks, River. Other
survivors
include five brothers, Oscar Walters, Jesse H. Walters, and H.R.
Walters,
all of Ashland, German Walters, Georges Creek, and Vint Walters,
Patrick,
and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Stambaugh, Ashland, and Mrs. Miranda

Ward, 82, former resident of Paintsville and a native of Martin County,
died April 26, in an Asheville, N.C., hospital after a long illness.
She
was the wife of the late Wm. A Ward, former postmaster and chief of
police
of this city. She resided in Asheville since 1930 and was a member of
the
Methodist Church of that city. Surviving are three brothers, Willie
Cassidy
of Paintsville; Garfield Cassidy of Inez, and Alex Cassidy of Dayton,
Ohio;
one stepdaughter, Mrs. J. T. Powell of Graham, Ky., and four sisters,
Miss
Lucrettia Cassidy of West Asheville, N. C., Mrs. W. A. Cumbo, West Van
Lear, Mrs. H. T. Pack of Charleston W. Va., and Mrs. Ernest Frith of
Martinsville,
Va. Funeral services were held in Asheville and burial was made in
Green

Sunday For Mrs. Loveta Wells Services were conducted from the Auxier
Freewill
Baptist Church Sunday at 2:00 p.m., for Mrs. Loveta Jane Wells, 77, who
died at 9:45 a.m., Friday, April 8, (1955). Death occurred at the home
of a son, Russell Wells, and was caused by a stroke, following an
illness
of five weeks. Born January 28, 1878, in Floyd County, she was a
resident
of Auxier at the time of her death. She was a member of the Church of
Christ.
Her husband William Riley Wells preceded her in death October 25, 1949.
She is survived by three children; one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Goble,
Jamestown,
Ohio, and two sons, Russell and Jay, Both of Auxier. Surviving also are
a sister, Mrs. Jerry Goble, and a brother, Jerome Crider, both of
Auxier.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt and burial
was in the Auxier Government Cemetery under the direction of the Jones

81, died suddenly Friday, April 15, at his home in Winifred. His
death was attributed to a heart attack. He was the father of O.L.
Williams prominent merchant of this city. Born Oct. 9, 1873, he was the
son of the late Robert and Betty Evans Williams. He was a
lifelong
resident of Winifred and a prominent farmer of that section. He was
married
to Dora Wheeler July 12, 1895. Surviving are his wife, seven sons Henry
and Hood Williams, Huntington, W.Va.; Herbert Williams,
Claremore,
Okla; O.L. Williams, city; Loy Williams, Staffordsville, KY; Odie
Williams,
Ashland, KY; Wayne Williams, Ceredo, W. Va.; and two daughters,
Mrs.
Foster Shepherd, Ashland, KY; and Mrs. Shelby Fyffe, Blaine, KY.
One son, Kendall Williams, preceded him in death in 1946. Also
surviving
are 32 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, and one brother, Jim
Williams,
Springfield, Ohio. Six sisters preceded him death. Funeral
services
were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, at the Bethel Church at
Flat Gap with the Revs. Leonard Walters, Lonza Reed and F.F. Rigsby
officiating.
Burial was made in the Williams Cemetery at Winifred under the
direction

Son Victim of Leukemia;
Services Held
Sunday Walter Witten, 18, son of Chief of Police Bill Witten and Hazel
Risner Witten of this city, died Friday afternoon (Apr. 15, 1955) in a
local hospital following an illness of four months. Death was
attributed
to leukemia. A popular member of the sophomore class at Paintsville
High
School, he played baseball for Hensley's Tire Service, Oil Springs High
School and Paintsville High School. He was named on the 1954 All-State
Baseball Team while playing for Hensley's Tire Service, and he was an
active
member of the Fish and Game Club and Hi-Y Club. Surviving besides the
parents
are two brothers, James and Francis Witten, both of Paintsville and one
sister, Mrs. Rhule Hazelett, Jr., also of Paintsville. Funeral services
were held Sunday afternoon (Apr. 17, 1955) at the First Church of God
in
Stafford Addition with the Revs. Joe Zavadsky and Woodrow Frisby
officiating.
Active pallbearers were Jackie Williams, Jimmie VanHoose, Jimmie
Williams,
Rodney Oney, Jimmie Colvin, Phillip Combs, Herman Hensley, and Donald
Patton.
Burial was made in the Richmond Cemetery under the direction of the
Paintsville
