Tom Akers, 70,
a member of a prominent Johnson County family, died Sunday in a local
hospital
following a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of
Stambaugh,
Ky. Born July 25, 1886, in Johnson County, he was the son of the late
James
Henry and Nancy Burchett Akers. Mr. Akers was a member of the
Church
of Christ. He was a retired miner and farmer. Surviving are his
wife,
Lula Stambaugh Akers, two sons, James C. Akers of Lima, Ohio, and Crit
W. Akers of Stambaugh, and four daughters, Mrs. Belva Lauber, Mrs. Mary
E. Baxter, Mrs. Tommy Jean Bacon and Mrs. Malta Cleo Clay, all of Lima,
Ohio. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Millie Daniel of
Stambaugh,
Mrs. Sophia Blankenship of Moncure, N.C., and Mrs. Minerva Chandler, of
this city. Services were conducted at 1 p.m. today from the Stambaugh
Church
of Christ with the Rev. Julian Hunt officiating. Burial was made

Passes Tuesday Rites Held Friday For East Point Woman
Mrs. Cynthia
Ellen Auxier, 39, a lifelong resident of East Point, died Tuesday,
April
2, in a Lexington hospital following an illness of two months. Born
October
23, 1917, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of Lonnie George and
the
late Mary Stepehens George. She was a member of the Church of
Christ.
Surviving are her husband, Sam Auxier, two daughters, Diana Sue Auxier,
at home, and Mrs. Abdeliah Elderwood, Columbus, Ohio, seven sisters,
Mrs.
Beatrice Dunnegan, East Point, Mrs. Okie Payne, Glendale, California,
Mrs.
Emma Wilson, Auxier, Mrs. Maggie Akers, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Opal
Miller,
Mrs. Eva Buck and Mrs. Nina Faye Lilly, all of Findlay, Ohio, and three
brothers, Alex and Herman George, both of East Point and Jackie George,
Columbus, Ohio. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday from the East
Point Church of Christ with the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt officiating.
Burial was made in the family cemetery at East Point under the
direction

Tobe Auxier,
80, retired farmer, and prominent resident of East Point, died at 3:30
p.m. Thursday at his home after a long illness. He suffered a
stroke
four years ago that left him an invalid, but his death was attributed
to
pneumonia. He was born at East Point June 12, 1876, a son of the late
Joseph
and Lottie Spradlin Auxier, and was married to Belle Preston who
survives
him. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are four sons
Frank
Auxier, Collista; Dick Auxier, Sam Auxier, and Edgar Auxier, all of
East
Point, two daughters, Mrs. Lyda Goble, East Point and Mrs. Lottie
Delong,
Hager Hill, also one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Ethel Hughes,
Glasgow,
Ky.,. George Auxier, Allen, Ky., and Sam Auxier, Bennington, Ind.
Funeral
services were held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the East Point
Church
of Christ by the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt. Music was furnished by the Toms
Creek Singers. Burial was made in the family cemetery at East Point.

James Collins,
83, died Thursday morning at his home at Odds following a long illness.
He was born in Johnson County on October 10, 1874. He was a
member
of the Church of Christ. A life-long resident of Odds, he was a retired
farmer. Surviving are his wife, Roberta Ratliff Collins, two sons,
Conrad
Collins, of Dayton, Ohio and Edward Collins of Boons Camp, one
step-son,
Elmo Ratliff of Detroit, Mich. and four daughters, Rsde Dale of
Weeksbury,
Frances Music of Dayton, Ohio, and Bertha and Opal Fields of Van Lear.
Also surviving are two brothers, Buddy Collins of Prestonsburg, and
Marion
Collins, of Dayton, Ohio, and one sister, Margarette Osbourne of Tram.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday from the Church of
Christ
at Odds with Leonard Webb and Herschell Short as officiating
mininsters.

Eckles,
78, died at 8:15 p.m. Monday, April 29, 1957 at the home of his son,
Ralph
Eckles, in King Addition. His death was attributed to a stroke.
Born
July 18, 1877, in Nashville, Tennessee, he was the son of William and
Lucinda
Cox Eckles. A resident of Beattyville for several years, he moved to
Paintsville
three months ago. He was a member of the Christian Church and a
retired
oil field worker. He was married in Scottsville on August 12,
1896
to Bertha Louise Dalton Eckles who survives. Surviving besides his wife
and son are two sisters, Donna Harley and Zula Finster, both of Armona,
Calif., three half-brothers, Arthur Eckles, Armona, Calif., Emmit
Eckles,
Fresno, Calif., and Harris Eckles, Coalinga, Calif., and one
half-sister,
Thoeve Shultz, Oreville, Wash. Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday
from
the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Spurgeon Honeycutt
officiating.
Burial was made in the Hall Cemetery in King Addition. Paintsville

Succumbs at Flat Gap Alamander Ferguson, 88, died Tuesday at his home
in
Flat Gap following an illness of several weeks. Born November 1, 1869,
in Johnson County, he was the son of Ferdinand and Margarette Williams
Ferguson. A lifelong resident of Flat Gap, he was a retired farmer. He
was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are one Con
Ferguson
of Flat Gap, one brother, Ora Ferguson of Red Bush, two sisters, Lydia
Bailey of Flat Gap and Malisa Jones of Columbus, OH, and five
grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Enterprise
Baptist
Church at Flat Gap with Ellis Hamilton as officiating minister. Burial
will be made in the family cemetery under the direction of the

Mrs. Rosa Daniel
Gambill, 78, died Friday at the home of her son, D. J. Gambill of
Thelma,
following a long illness. Born February 20, 1879, at Kerz, she was the
daughter of Dan and Rebecca Stapleton Daniel. She had been a resident
of
Thelma for 18 years. Mrs. Gambill was a member of the Primitive Baptist
Church. She was married December 26, 1900 to James M. Gambill who
preceded
her in death January 11, 1956. Surviving are two sons, D. J. Gambill of
Thelma and W. H. Gambill of Ashland and four grandchildren. Other
survivors
are one sister Mrs. Birdie Stapleton of Beaver, Ohio and four brothers,
L. F. Daniel of Ashland, H. R. Daniel of Youngstown, Ohio, Arbie Daniel
of Kerz, and A. M. Daniel of Ashland. Services were conducted at 2 p.
m.
Sunday from the home of her son with Bruce Daniel as officiating
minister.

Mrs. Ella Rigney
Hampton, 60, wife of L. J. Hampton of this city, died suddenly of a
heart
attack in the Hurst Hotel in Hazard Thursday night, April 25. Mrs.
Hampton
was traveling with her husband on a business trip when the unexpected
seizure
occured. A native of Hustonville, Ky., she had been a resident of this
city for about thirty years. She was a loyal member of the First
Methodist
Church and gave generously of her time and energies to its activities.
She served as president of the W.S.C.S. for the past ten years and was
always ready to assist in any way to advance the program and progress
of
the church. Surviving besides her husband is one son, James, New Haven,
W. Va. Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist church
at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 27, by the pastor, Rev. William F.
Pettus.
Burial was in the family cemetery at Stanford. Paintsville Herald

11, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital following an
illness
of one week. Born May 14, 1946, at King Addition, he was the son of

and Goldia Fitch Lemaster. He had been a resident of Thealka for
three years. Surviving besides the parents are four brothers, Larry,
Johnny
Ray, Ronnie B. and David Carl, all of Thealka, two half-brothers,
George
Rowland, U. S. Army and Robert Lee Rowland of Thealka and one half-
sister,
Angie Rowland of Thealka. Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday
from
the Thealka Freewill Baptist Church. Don Fraley and James Lyons
were
officiating ministers. Burial was made in the family cemetery at
Thealka.

Glen McCarty,
47, died Thursday in a local hospital following an illness of several
months.
Born July 28, 1909, at Manila he was the son of William and Caroline
Clark
McCarty. He was a resident of Barnetts Creek and a member of the United
Baptist Church. He was a miner by occupation. Surviving are his wife,
Ellen
Reed McCarty, five sons, Arvil, Roy, Edward, James and Charles McCarty,
all of Barnetts Creek, one daughter, Anna McCarty of Barnetts Creek,
two
brothers, Espa McCarty of Ashland, and two sisters, Mrs. Irene Hayes

Mrs. Merida Moore, both of Blaine. Services were conducted at 10 a.m.

wife of Burns McKenzie, died at her home in Bridgeford at 8:15
Saturday,
April 13, a victim of cancer. She had been ill for the past two

one-half years. She was born June 8, 1899, in Lawrence County, the
daughter
of George and Mollie Smith Taylor. She was a member of the Freewill
Baptist
Church. Surviving besides her husband are four stepsons and one
stepdaughter,
Clyde, Sitka, Arnold and Guy, both of Circleville, Ohio, Delbert,
Laurelville,
Ohio, and Mrs. Arnie Murray of this city. Also surviving are two
sisters,
Elizabeth Ratcliff, Van Lear, and Sally Wilcox of this city; one
brother,
Bascom Taylor, Nippa. Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 15,
at 10:00 from the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church with C. C. Hall
and Claude Preston as officiating ministers. Music was by the

Creek Quartet. Burial was in the Taylor Cemetery at
Staffordsville

Ray R. Patton,
49, of Buchanan died April 15 in a Louisa hospital following an
extended
illness. Born December 14, 1908, at East Point, he was the son of the
late
John Henry and Martha Tackett Patton. He was a veteran of World War II
and had been employed with the C & O Railway Company. Survivors
include
his wife, Mrs. Mary Price Patton, three daughters, Mrs. Ray Copley of
Buchanan
and Misses Ruby and Patricia Patton at home; one son, John Patton of
Buchanan;
two sisters, Mrs. Martin Bender of Elwood City, PA, and Mrs. Phillip
Bentley
of Le Mesa, CA; two brothers, Sam Patton of Buchanan and Charlie Patton
of Prestonsburg and six grandchildren. Services were conducted at 2
p.m.
Friday from the Buchanan Chapel by the Rev. R.S. Derifield of

Resident Dies Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs. Belle Preston
Mrs. Belle
Preston,
69, died at her home in King Addition at 12 p.m., Sunday, April 14, of
a stroke following an illness of five weeks. The daughter of George W.
and Angeline Porter Cunningham, she was born at Millers Creek, January
15, 1888. She had made her home in King Addition for the past
twenty-seven
years and was a member of the United Baptist Church. Her husband, Cyrus
Preston, preceded her in death April 14, 1939. She is survived by two
sons,
Ernest Ray of Thealka and James Cyrus Preston of this city. Also
surviving are two brothers, George W. and William E. Cunningham, both
of
King Addition, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted
from the United Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 16, with
Cully
Sparks as officiating minister. Burial was in the family cemetery at
Thelma

Frank Reed, 66,
resident of Manila, died in a local hospital at 7:00 a.m., Tuesday,
April
23 after an illness of ten days. He was born July 12, 1890, at Manila,
the son of Asa J. and Elizabeth Gullett Reed. A veteran of World
War I, he was a well-known farmer of his community and was a member of
the United Baptist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Malta and Dorothy
Reed, both of Manila, and one brother, Lonza Reed of Flat Gap. Funeral
services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 25, from the
Fish
Trap United Baptist Church with Foster Rigsby, Tommie Bailey, and Oscar
McCarty as officiating ministers. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Otis Richmond,
son of Elijah and Zora (Webb) Richmond was born May 1, 1900, and
departed
this life April 4, 1957, age 56 years, 11 months, and 13 days. He was
married
to Bessie Delong on October 16, 1923, and to this union were born two
sons,
Hobert, of Shelby, Ohio, and Paul at home. He was baptized into Christ
on May 30, 1952. He lived his entire life in this
community.
He served his district as magistrate, and was always interested in his
home, family, and community. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife
and
two sons, and two grandchildren. He leaves the following sisters
and brothers: Mrs. Jane Newsome, Paintsville; Mrs. Julia Brickley, Van
Lear; Mrs. Fannie Doyerlock, Fort Wayne, Ind.; John D. Holden, W. Va.
and
E. B. Jr., Dayton, Ohio, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Salyer, 54, practicing dentist here for twenty-years, died at 10:00
last
night in a local hospital. He had suffered a heart attack only
five
days ago. A member of a prominent Magoffin County family, Dr. Salyer
had
many relatives here and throughout Eastern Kentucky. He was the son of
the late D. B. and Maude Patrick Salyer of Magoffin County. He
was
married to Margaret Rose of Floyd County who survives him. Dr. Salyer
was
a member of the B.P.O.E and was a past president of the Mountain Dental
Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Daniel Boone
Salyer and William Lynn Salyer, both at home; two daughters, Mrs. Hans
Frey, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. John E. Chandler, Havelock, N.C., one
gradson also one brother, H. Glen Salyer of Cleveland, Ohio and five
sister,

Dies After Long Illness
Harley Sanders,
52, died Wednesday at his home at Thealka following a long illness. He
was born July 25, 1904, in Martin, Tennessee. He had been a
resident
of Thealka for eight months. By occupation, he was a maintenance
man. He was married April 21, 1947 to Mandy Tackett Sanders, who
survives.
Other survivors are two stepsons, Vernon DeBoard, U. S. Army and
Charles
DeBoard of Dayton, Ohio, two brothers, Harold Sanders of Detroit,
Mich.,
and Harry Sanders of Martin, Tenn., and two sisters, Pauline Roberts
and
Anna Lee Turner, both of Dayton, Ohio. Services were conducted at 10
a.m.
Saturday at the West Van Lear Church of Christ with the Rev. Spurgeon
Honeycutt
officiating. Burial was made in the Cumbo Cemetery at West Van
Lear.

Mrs. Matilda
Stambaugh Spencer, 88, died Wednesday at her home at Stambaugh

an illness of three weeks. Born February 14, 1869, at Stambaugh, she
was
the daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Spencer Stambaugh. She
was
married May 26, 1895, to R. C. Spencer. He preceded her in death May
29,
1955. Surviving are two brothers, Lewis Stambaugh of Stambaugh and Fred
Stambaugh of Wittensville, and one sister, Mrs. Kelly Rothwell of
Stambaugh.
Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday from the Locust Grove United
Baptist Church with F.F. Rigsby as officiating minister. Burial was
made
in the family cemetery at Stambaugh under the direction of the Preston

Marcus Spradlin,
51, son of Mrs. Ben J. Spradlin, of this city and the late Mr.

died Monday, April 1, in the King’s Daughter Hospital in Ashland,
following
a brief illness. He was born March 17. 1906, in Johnson County. Mr.
Spradlin
had been employed in the combustion department of the Armco Steel
Corporation
since moving to Ashland in 1943. He was a member of the Central Baptist
Church. Surviving besides his mother are his wife, Mrs. Allie Spradlin,
two sons, Randolph Spradlin of Ashland and Ben Mar Spradlin with the
U.S.
Navy, one daughter, Mrs. Ralph Boggs of Ashland and four brothers,

C. Spradlin of Van Lear, Henry F. Spradlin of Homestead, Fla., Charles

FATAL TO YOUTH
Jackie Young,
17, of Lowmansville died Wednesday of an accidental gunshot wound in
the
head. The youth succumbed in an ambulance of the Jones and Preston
Funeral
Home near West Liberty while enroute to a Lexington hospital. He was
the
son of Leroy and Ivory Hackney Young and had spent his entire life in
Johnson
County. Surviving besides the parents are the following brothers and
sisters:
Mrs. Lenora Cyphers, Ypailanti, Mich; Richard Young, also of Ypailanti;
Mrs. Lois Capes, Lowmansville; and Charles, Kenneth, Larry, Joan and
Joyce
Young, all at home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday,
April 27, at the home of his parents, by Rev. F.F. Rigsby and Rev.
Florida
Lyons. Burial was in the Hackney family cemetery at Lowmansville.
