Jeff Allen,
widely
known citizen of this city, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, April 21 at his
home
on Main Street. He had been in ill health about three years, and death
followed a stroke which he suffered a few days ago. Mr. Allen was 68
years
of age and was a native of Lee County. He had been a resident of
Painstville
for the past 38 years where he had served as a member of the city
police
force. He had also been and oil and gas operator and had dealt in real
estate. He was a member of the United Brethern Church, and the
Daughters
of America. He was born Sept. 13, 1889 a son of the late Richard and
Sally
Ann Rader Allen. Mr. Allen had many friends in this city and county who
will be saddened to learn of his death. Surviving are his wife, Ellen
Jane
Dishman Allen, and the following half-brothers and sisters; Mrs. Mary
Haney,
Paintsville; Mrs. Emily Witt, Grey Hawk, Ky.; Mrs. Ella Emery and Mrs.
Pearlie Chaney, both of Irvine, Ky., Mrs. Minnie Flannery, Arvel Ky.,
Andy
Mayse, Baltiomore, Md., and George Allen, Irvine, Ky.. Funeral Services
will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Aprill 24, at the Third Street
Freewill
Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Wells-Buckingham Cemetery here.

Green Blair Dies
Thursday At Thealka
Funeral services
were held Sunday at the Thealka Freewill Baptist Church for Green
Blair,
87, who died at his home at Thealka at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17,
after
an illness of several years. The son of the late Asa and Clinie Phelps
Blair, he was born in Magoffin County February 27, 1871, but had lived
practically all of his life in Johnson County. He was a member of the
First
Baptist church and worked as a miner prior to his retirement. Surviving
are his widow, Lillian Dean Blair; two sons, Walter and Frank Blair,
Columbus,
Ohio; eight daughters, Mrs. Lucille Caudill, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Barbara
Ellen Webb and Mrs. Ruby Hamilton, both of Thealka; Mrs. Martha
Cundiff,
Indiana ; Mrs. Lizzie Jones, Ashland; Mrs. Sylvia Roberts, Columbus,
Ohio;
Mrs. Cora Cantrell and Mrs. Betty Stambaugh, both of this city. Also
surviving
are the following brothers and sisters, Leander Blair and Arbie Blair,
city; Lonzie Blair and Luther Blair, both of Ohio; Mrs. Lucinda Arms,
Sitka;
Mrs Dove Barbery, Detroit, Michigan. Services were conducted at 1:30
p.m.,
with James Lyons and Don Fraley as officiating minsters. Burial was in
the Ratliff Cemetery in this city. This obituary is from the

Herald and I did correct the last name of one of my aunts, Ruby
Hamilton
(was printed as Hampton), also the year of his death was not included
in
the obituary and I added that, there may be other errors that I am not
aware of, if so please contact me so I can correct my records as well.
Green Blair was married to my grandmother (Mary Jackson first and all
but
3 of the children listed are from that marriage). Darrell, This
might
be a little controversial, however, it is history. The above is my
grandfather
and he was married first to my grandmother, Mary Lou Jackson, they
divorced
in 1932 and he married Lillian Dean. The following is my uncle,
William
Jasper Blair, son of Green Blair and Mary Lou Jackson Blair, who was
killed
by Green Blair's step-son who is currently living in Paintsville,
Kentucky

Mrs. L. E. Boggs
died recently of a heart attack at her home in Columbus, Ohio. Her
husband
preceded her in death several years ago. She is survived by one son,
Lonnie,
Osford, Ohio, and one daughter, Lettiza, Columbus, Ohio. Mrs.
Boggs
was the aunt of Ha__y Thomas of this city and a sister of
the
late Mrs. R. C. Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Boggs formerly resided in this
city.

Brown, son of Daniel Brown and Art Allen Brown was born May 1, 1886 and
died April 9, 1958 being 71 years, eleven months and eight days of age.
He was married to Hettie Pace. There were eight children born to this
union,
Mrs. Malcum Jackson, Conley, KY; Mrs. Iva Picklesimer, Baltimore, Md.;
Mrs. Herschel Blanton, Charleston, W. Va.; Den Brown, Chicago, Ill.;
Dan
Brown, Baltimore, Md.; Mrs. Curt Bailey, Rochester, Ind.; Mrs. James
Carrol,
Paintsville, Paul Allen Brown, Rochester, Ind. He leaves 24
grandchildren,
3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Henry
Hamilton,
Ashland; Mrs. Linard Blair, Barnetts Creek, and one half brother, Boon
Brown. He also leaves many more relatives and friends. Tom was a friend
to all who knew him. He was always ready to help those in need. He
never
wanted anyone to leave his home hungry. He was a good husband and
father

Fonzie Buchett,
42, Winchester businessman, died suddenly at his home Tuesday, April 8.
A native of Johnson County he was born at Fuget, the son of Grass and

Williams Burchett. Surviving are his widow, Maude Blair Burchett; two
sons
and one daughter. Also surviving are the following brothers and
sisters:

Conley, 35, well-know resident of Volga, died in a local hospital at
6:15
p.m., April 10, a victim of cancer following an illness of one year. A
native of Johnson County, she was born June 6, 1922, the daughter
of
Toble and Grace Lemaster Lavender of Volga. She attended the
Paintsville
City Schools and was graduated from Paintsville High School in the
class
of 40. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and her life was
an inspiring example of her devotion and faith. She was married sixteen
years ago to Oral Conley, who survives. Also surviving are four sons,

Douglas, Steven Donald, Delbert Paul, and Edward Darrel Conley, all at
home; three sisters, Mary Ann Wallen, Clarksville, Tenn.; Edith Kase,
Charleston,
Ind.; Kitty Preston, Ypsilanti, Mich.; one brother, Steven Wesley
Lavender, Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted from the home
at 10:00 a.m., Sunday with Ellis Hamilton and Charles Adams as

Mrs. Teresa K.
Daniel, 61, wife of Jay Virgil Daniel, died at 1:15 a.m. Monday, April
21, at her home in Lexington after a long illness. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel
are former residents of Paintsville. Mr. Daniel is the son of the
late Dr. and Mrs. G. V. Daniel. Mrs. Daniel was born in Pittsburgh,
Pa.,
and was a daughter of the late Timothy and Margaret McCloskey Kenney.
She
was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Altar Society
of
the church. Survivors include a daughter, Miss Suzann Daniel,
Lexington;
one son, J. R. Daniel, Hickory, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. T. H. Easley
and Mrs. Margaret Stark, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. H. J.
Dailey,
Erie, Pa., and two brothers, Ralph E. Kenney, Manatua, Ohio and J. L.

died at his home at johns Creek at 12:52 a.m., April 19, following an
illness
of five weeks. The son of William and Rebecca Alley Delong, he was born
February 17, 1873, at Johns Creek and had been a lifelong resident of
that
community. He formerly worked as a miner and engaged in farming.
Survivors
include his widow, Sarah Sammons Delong; Curtis, Mitchell, and Willie
Delong,

for James Estep, 35, who died in Chicago, Ill. were held at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at the Jones and Preston Funeral Home here. A son of Ben Estep
and
the late Maudie Slabaugh Estep, he was born Sept. 12, 1922 in Johnson
County.
He was a veteran and had been ill for 14 years. Surviving besides his
father
are his brothers and sisters, Mrs Ada Hyslop, Lexington, Neb., Ms.

M. Van Hoose, Sharon, Pa., Joel and Edgar Estep, both of Mechanicsburg,

an illness of four and one half months. A life long resident of Moon,

she was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are her
husband,

Toral Franklin
Dies Suddenly Of Heart Attack
Toral Franklin,
59, postmaster at Staffordsville and well known merchant of the county,
died suddenly about 9:00 p.m., Thursday, April 24, of a heart attack.
The
fatal seizure occurred on the Flat Gap highway as Mr. Franklin, driver
of the car and Mrs. Franklin were returning from Red Bush. Mrs.
Franklin
received minor injuries when the car left the highway and struck a
rock.
The son of Hardy and Susan Hill Franklin, he was born at Red Bush July
17, 1898. He engaged in farming and was a former teacher in the Johnson
County Schools. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving
besides his wife, Fannie Dixon Franklin, are two sons James Franklin,
Staffordsville
and Charles Franklin, Columbus, Ohio. Also surviving are two sisters,
Mrs.
Robert Tschuda, Inglewood, California, Mrs. James Wallen, Red Bush, one
granddaughter and one grandson. Funeral services were conducted from
the
United Baptist Church at Staffordsville at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 27,
with Tommie Barley, Loyd Williams and Florida Lyons as officiating
ministers.

April 18, after an illness of a few days. The son of Wess and Dora

Gillem, he was born in Johnson County, August 15, 1919. A carpenter by
trade he was a veteran of World War II and received the following
decorations
and citations: Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal,
World
War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon
with
one Bronze Service Star. Surviving are his wife, Lizzie Fraley Gillem,
Riceville; two sisters, Eunice Spears, Columbus, OH; Nannie Hall of
this
city. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 1:00 p.m.,
Sunday,
April 20, with C.C. Hall and Scott Castle as officiating ministers.

73, died at his home at Relief at 9:30 a.m. Saturday April 5, 1958,

an illness of several months. The son of Franklin and Miranda Lyons
Hamilton,
he was born January 27, 1885, in Johnson County. A prominent
resident
of Relief, he was a schoolteacher and farmer prior to his
retirement.
He was a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his
wife,
Della Cox Hamilton, to whom he has been married forty-five years two
daughters,
Mrs. Ova Green, of this city; Mrs. Kermit Skaggs, Troutwood, Ohio; one

Graden E. Jarvis,
53, manager of the A. W. Cox Department Store and prominent businessman
of this city, died in Charleston Memorial Hospital at 7:45 p.m.,
Friday,
April 11 of a heart attack. The seizure occurred as he was
undergoing
surgery about 7:30 that morning. His sudden death shocked and grieved
his
many friends and associates in this city. The son of the late Anderson
and Rachel Jarvis, he was born June 25, 1904, in Clay, W. Va., one of a
family of ten children, five sons and five daughters. Preceding
him
in death besides his parents were two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Tate and
Mrs.
Mary Pope. He was married January 28, 1928, to the former Elsie
Sponaugle.
They resided in Parkersburg, W. Va., where he was manager of the A. W.
Cox Department Store, until May 1935 when he moved to Paintsville and
became
manager of the store in this city which expanded under his capable
leadership.
He was widely known and liked throughout this section and held in high
esteem by his business associates. A successful businessman, he
always
demonstrated a sincere desire to serve the interests of the public, and
his courteous manner and genial personality won the respect and
friendship
of those with whom he came in contact. He was a member of the First
Baptist
Church and of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his widow, Elsie Jarvis;
one son, Pete, manager of the A. W. Cox Department Store in
Prestonsburg;
a granddaughter, Susan Kay, and grandson, Graden R., Jr.,
Prestonsburg.
Also surviving are four brothers, Cam A. Jarvis, Charleston, W. Va.;
Dr.
Holly C. Jarvis, Cincinnati, Ohio; E. Howard Jarvis, Clarksburg, W.
Va.;
Paul G. Jarvis, Gallipolis, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Osa Hickman, St.
Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. Jesse Thomas, his twin sister, St. Petersburg,
Fla.;
Mrs. Dora Weaver, St. Petersburg, Fla. Funeral services were conducted
at 2:00 p.m., Monday from the First Baptist Church in this city with
the
pastor, Rev. M. R. Thomason, officiating. He was assisted by Rev.
Ira McMillen, pastor of Irene Cole Memorial Church in Prestonsburg, and
Rev. E. H. Overman, pastor of the Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Active
pallbearers were Howard Patrick, Dennis Van Hoose, C. C. Williams, Byrd
Cox, Alex Vaughan, Jr., Escom Chandler, N. B. McCubbin and Te Arnold
Silvert.
Members of his Sunday School class were named honorary pallbearers.

was in the Richmond Cemetery in this city with the Masons conducting

Aaron Meek, 77,
retired miner of East Point, died at 11:20 p.m., April 2, in a local
hospital
after an illness of two weeks. Death was caused by a blood clot.
The son of the late Bart and Julia Penix Meek, he was born at Boons
Camp
June 26, 1880. He had made his home at East Point for twenty
years
and was a member of the U.M.W.A. and the United Baptist Church. His
wife,
Katherine Meek, preceded him in death July 12, 1953. Survivors include
three sons, Edgar Meek, Williamson, W. Va.; Forrest Meek, East Point;
Douglas
Meek, Grand Rapids, Michigan; four daughters, Mrs. Sophia Shannon,

in Martin County. He had lived at Auxier for the past thirty-five
years and was employed as a miner. He was a veteran of World War
I. His wife, Beauty Booth Montgomery preceded him in death. Surviving

65, C. & O. engineer, died suddenly at his home at Hager Hill early
Thursday morning, April 8, 1958 of a heart attack. The son of Mortimer
and Catherine McGurn Murphy, he was born April 5, 1893, and was widely
known and liked in this section where he had lived for many
years.
He was a member of the Catholic Church and had been employed by the
C.&
O. Railway Company for thirty-one years. Surviving are two sons, Paul
Murphy,
Hager Hill, Kevin Murphy, San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs.
Margarette
Soelker and Mrs. Evelyn Noltmeyer, both of Louisville. A brother
and sister also survive. Services were conducted at the St. Agnes
Church
in Louisville at 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 12. Burial was in the

were held Saturday for Ernest Ray Preston, 40, who was found dead in
his
car on the Thelma road Wednesday evening, April 30, the victim of a
sudden
heart attack. The son of the late Cyrus and Belle Cunningham Preston,
he
was born in Johnson County, April 9, 1918, and had lived at Thelka for
the past twenty-one years. He was employed as clerk and
bookkeeper
for the North East Coal Company and was a member of the Freewill
Baptist
Church. Survivors include his widow, Alta Lee Van Hoose Preston; one
daughter,
Gwendolyn Preston, at home; one brother, James C. Preston of this city.
Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. at the Freewill Baptist Church at
Nippa with C. C. Hall as officiating minister. Music was by the
Toms
Creek Quartet. Pallbearers were Mils Ratliff, Ed Castle, Arthur Castle,
James Heber Conley, Theodore Miller and Altop Kennard. Burial was in

70, wife of the late Proctor Walters, died Wednesday, April 9, at her
home
after an illness of three years. Mrs. Walters was the daughter of
the late George W. and Julina Brown Boyd. She was born in Johnson
County
November 25, 1887 and had lived at River for forty-one years. Her
husband
preceded her in death April 27, 1955. Survivors include four daughters:
Mrs. Elbert Castle, River; Mrs. Sam Brickey, Huntington; Mrs. Dexter
Castle,
San Antonio; and Mrs. Willia Mae Meeks, River; three half-sisters and

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Aprl 12, at
the
River United Baptist Church with Winfrey Meek, Cully Sparks and German
Walters officiating ministers. Burial followed at the Daniel
Cemetery

RESIDENT DIES WEDNESDAY
Funeral services
were conducted from the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church Friday for
Mrs. Anna Ward, 68, resident of this city who died at her home at 8:30
a.m., Wednesday, April 23, following an illness of two months. The
daughter
of the late Henry and Sue Turner Mahan, she was born November 18, 1891,
in this county and was a lifelong resident of this city. She was a
member
of the Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband,
Smith Ward. Surviving are two sons, Norman and Thomas Ward, both of
this
city; three daughters, Mrs. R. G. Howes, Ft. Thomas; Mrs. Charles
Collins,
New Orleans, La.; Mrs. Felix Harrison, Nashville, Tenn. Also surviving
are two half brothers, Carl and Proctor Stafford, both of this city,
and
one half sister, Mrs. Ida Salyers, also of this city. Services were
conducted
at 2:00 p.m., by Rev. Claude Preston. Burial was in the Mayo Cemetery.

82, NATIVE OF COUNTY, DIES IN ASHLAND
Mrs. Lizzie Davis
Williams, 82, native of Oil Springs, died Friday at the home of a
daughter,
Mrs. Mollie Carroway in Ashland, after an extended illness. Mrs.
Williams
was born April 24, 1875, a daughter of the late Harve and Louise Howes
Davis. She was a member of the United Baptist Church at Fishtrap in
this
county. She had lived in Ashland for the past 20 years. Funeral
services
were conducted Sunday morning at the Oak Springs united Baptist Church
by the Rev. Everett Sloan, assisted by the Rev. Lonza Reed. Burial was
in
the Rose Hill Burial Park. Surviving are four sons, Arnold L. Williams
of Huntington, Clyde C. Williams of Oil Springs; Martin Williams of
Ashland;
and Robert M. Williams, Ashland; Two daughters, Mrs. Carroway, and Mrs.
