Henry
Auxier, 94, retired farmer, and uncle of James T. Auxier of this city,
died Sunday evening, April 19, at the old family home on Johns Creek
after an illness of a few days. He was the last member of the family of
the late Major John B. Auxier and Mary Tilsley Auxier..His father was
the first surveyor of Johnson County, a member of the State
Legislature, and a major in the Union Army during the Civil War. Mr.
Auxier was born January 10, 1865, and spent his entire life on his
Johns Creek farm. He was married on Feb. 24,1898 to Alice Burchett, who
died 35 years ago. A son George Irland, died November 10, 1918. He was
alert and active until a short time before his death, and persisted in
traveling over his farmland to look over his crops and livestock until
a few months before his illness. Surviving is one son, Jesse Brown
Auxier, with whom he made his home, and two grandsons, Henry Irland and
Harold Kermit. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the
Philadelphia Church of Christ by the Rev. S. C. Honeycutt. The body
remained at the Jones and Preston Funeral Home until early Tuesday
where a large number of friends and relatives gathered to pay final

Blair of Southside Dies April 5
Lester
Blair, 48, resident of Southside, died in a local hospital April 5
following a heart attack. The son of Leander and Ellen Montgomery
Blair, he was born in Magoffin County August 29, 1910, and had lived in
Paintsville for the past thirty-nine years. He was a minister of
the Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Merzie
Montgomery; three sons, Jimmie Lester, Larry and Gary Blair, all of
Paintsville; seven daughters; Opaline Castle, Patsy Blair, Hermalee
Blair, Mary Sue Blair, Maxine Blair, Sharon Blair and Loretta Blair all
of Paintsville; two brothers, Lindsey Blair and Lonnie Blair, both of
this city; one half brother, Bill Blanton, Magoffin County; four
sisters, Jewell Collins, Paintsville; Rosie Music and Roxie Pelphrey,
both of Toledo, Ohio, and Maggie Caudill, Dunbar, West Virginia.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 8, from
the Southside Enterprise Baptist Church with Scott Castle, Norman
Roberts and Hood Wallen officiating. Burial was in the family

Mrs.
Laura Ealey Bowman, 74, died at the home of her son, Theodore Ealey at
Staffordsville Sunday morning, April 19, 1959 of a heart attack
following a brief illness. The daughter of Riley and Susan Tackett
Blevins, she was born in this county March 5, 1885 and had been a
lifelong resident of Staffordsville. She was a member of the
United Baptist Church. Her first marriage was to Clint Ealey who
preceded her in death. She was later married to Bill Bowman, who
also preceded her in death. Surviving besides her son Theodore, is
another son, Garland Ealey, Turner Branch. Also surviving are two
brothers Smith Blevins, Staffordsville: Grant Blevins, Waverly, KY. ;
One sister Rosa Lemaster, Lucasville, Ohio. Funeral services were
conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday April 21, from the old Union Church at
Staffordsville with Lonea Reed and Lloyd Williams as officiating
ministers. Burial was in the Stafford Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Burke Sitka Resident Dies Wednesday
Mrs.
Martha Burke, 75, died at her home at Sitka Wednesday, April 22, 1959
following an extended illness. She was born in this county June 18,
1883, the daughter of the late John W. and Ella Tuckett Burke. She had
made her home at Sikta for the past thirty years. Her husband, Richard
Martin Burke, preceded her in death on January 31, 1958. Survivors
include four sons, Clarence Burke, Mechanicsburg, Ohio; Howard,
Douglas, and Raly Vern Burke all of Sitka; five daughter, Mrs. Ora
Kimbler, Mrs. Stella Osborne, Mrs. Ludie McKenzie and Mrs. Dorothy
Crislip,all of Sitka; Mrs. Fay Adams, Walbridge, Ohio. Funeral services
were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday; April 24, from the home with Ellis
Hamilton and Arthur Morris as officiating ministers. Music was by the

Castle Of Stambaugh Dies Tuesday
Robert
Castle, 64, resident of Stambaugh, died in a local hospital at 11:25
a.m., Tuesday April 14 1959, after an illness of two and one-half
years. The son of James and Katheryn Fairchild Castle, he was born at
Tom's Creek November 11 1894. He had lived at Stambaugh for the past
twenty eight years where he worked as a miner and carpenter. He was a
Mason and a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. He was married in
this city March 18 1916, to the former Minnie Murphy, who survives.
Other survivors include six sons, James Floyd Castle, Eastern, Ky.;
Orville Castle, Stambaugh; Richard Castle, Wittensville; Russell
Castle, Paintsville; Raymond Castle, Lowmansville; Homer Castle, Kansas
City, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Oneida Stambaugh, Kansas City,
Kansas; Mrs. Gracie Pack, Stambaugh; four brothers, Lonnie Castle,
Turner Branch; Willie Castle, St. Louis, Mo.; James Castle, Collista;
Frank Castle, Ypsilanti, Michigan; 19 grandchildren. Funeral services
were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16, from the Sitka Free
Will Baptist Church with Claude Preston and C.C. Hall as officiating
ministers. Music was by the Tom's Creek Quartet. Masonic rites were
conducted at graveside by Chandlerville Lodge No. 858. Burial was

Click, 77, Well known resident of Swamp Branch, died at his home at
5:00 a.m., Wednesday April 22, after an illness of several months. The
son of William and Mary Dotson Click, he was born at Swamp Branch
August 17, 1881, and had been a farmer and life long resident of that
community. Survivors include five sons, Elzie Click, Swamp Branch;
Jerry Click, Riceville; Amos Click, Swamp Branch; Murle Click,
Riceville; Leonard Click, Leander; six daughters, Malta Caudill,
Riceville, Nancy Caudill, Mrs. Okie Conley, Rushie Spears, all of Swamp
Branch; Mary Lee Ramey, Shelby, Ohio; Nova Joe Lemaster, Flint
Michigan; two brothers, Bennie Click, Boyd County; William Click,
Ashland; William Click, Ashland; four sisters, Lillie Frazier, Bonanza;
Mary McCalvin and Lovenia Stewart, both of Boyd County; Martha May and
Carrie Mccoy both of Ohio. Funeral services were conducted from the

Harry
Daniels, 77 died Wednesday, April 29 1959, at 5:00 p.m. at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. Quiller Huff, at West Van Lear after an illness of
four months. The son of the late Josh and Tildie Preston Daniels he was
born in this county June 5 1881. A retired miner he had been a resident
of the West Van Lear community for about forty years. He was a member
of the Church of Christ. His wife Carolina Music Daniels, preceded him
in death in 1953. Besides his daughter, survivors include three
sons, William Daniels, Columbus, Ohio; Cecil Daniels, Martin, Ky; Ervin
Daniels, East Lynn, W. Va.; one stepson, Frank Wells, Columbus, Ohio;
five daughters, Miss Laura Mae Daniels, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Erma
Luzadoer, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Sylvia Demartiz, Chicago Ill.; Mrs.
Lucille Eden, Martin, Ky; Mrs. Virginia Hedrick, Inez; two
stepdaughters, Mrs. Oma Daniels, Wheelright; Mrs. Wilda Demurray,
Weeksbury; one sister Mrs. Sarah Reed, Van Lear. Funeral services were
conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2, from the West Van Lear Church
of Christ with S.C. Honeycutt and Cecil Sherman as officiating
ministers. Burial was in the Cumbo Cemetery at West Van Lear.

Mrs.
Trinia Davis, 80, well known resident of Staffordsville, died in a
local hospital at 7:20 p.m., Saturday, April 11, following a two
year illness. She was a sister of Mrs. W.H. Slone of this city.
The daughter of the late Charles & Lavina Chandler Pack, she was
born at Chandlerville, May 11, 1878 and was a member of the United
Baptist Church. Her husband M.A. Davis preceded her in death in 1941.
Surviving besides her sister are four sons, Connel Davis & John
Davis, both of Winifred; Willie Davis, Ashland; Walter Davis, Sunbury,
Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Isaac Ramey, Galena, Ohio; Mrs. George
Wheeler, Blaine; Mrs. W.A. Stapleton, Staffordsville; Mrs. Elmon Davis,
Flat Gap. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00p.m., Monday from the
Sugar Grove United Baptist Church with Lonza Reed and M.R. Thomason as
officiating ministers. Music was by the Tom Creek Quartet. Burial

Levi
Fairchild, 77, president of West Van Lear, died in a local hospital at
12:20 a.m. Monday April 22, 1959, following a brief illness. Mr.
Fairchild, a native of this county, was born April 11, 1882 the son of
Asa and Sara Ratcliffe Fairchild. He had made his home at West
Van Lear for the past several months and prior to his retirement
engaged in farming. His wife Lucy Hitchcock Fairchild preceded him in
death May 9, 1953. Surviving are six sons, Son Fairchild of this city;
Russell, Walter, Espie, Virgil and Arthur Fairchild all of
Staffordsville; four daughters, Mrs. Alma Conley of this city; Mrs.
Grace Preston; Minford, Ohio; Mrs. Alice Henson, Lexington; Mrs. Alta
Pelphrey, West Van Lear; one brother Ed Fairchild, Staffordsville; one
sister, Nola Hannah, Barnetts Creek. Also surviving are fifty-five
grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Rock House
Freewill Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. today with Claude Preston, Scott
Castle and C. C. Hall officiating. Music was by the Tom Creek
Singers and the Paintsville Quartet. Burial was in the Staffordsville

Evening Apr.4 1959 at the home of her daughter Mrs.Irvin Music of Hager
Hill,following a long illness. The daughter of the late William &
Rebecca Green Ratliff she was born in Johnson County Ky on Nov.25
1868,and had been a resident of Hager Hill for the past 50 years.She
was a member of the Church of Christ in Van Lear. She was preceded in
death by her husband James Fairchild. Surviving are two sons,Dick &
Son Fairchild both of Hager Hill,another daughter Mrs.Minnie Cantrell

Bert
Hall, 72, a well known resident of Paintsville, passed away at 1:00
p.m. April 27 1959, in a local hospital following an illness of five
years. He was born April 30 1886, in Johnson County, the son of Callway
and Sarah Hensley Hall, and had resided in this city for the past
thrity-two years. Mr. Hall was married December 21 1910, at Winifred,
Ky., to the former Zella Wheeler, who survives. In 1927 Mr. Hall became
an employee of the Paintsville Gas and Water Co., holding the job of
serviceman for the past thirty-two years. He was considered a very
valuable employee and it was with regret that the company accepted his
resignation when he was forced to retire in 1954 due to ill health.
Survivors beside the wife include one son, Verner Hall of Lexington;
three daughters, Mrs. Vertrice Skaggs, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Allene
Roberts, Pikeville; and Mrs. Avis Jean McKenzie, of this city; also
five grandchildren and one great grandchild; one brother, Jayson Hall,
Flat Gap; and three sisters, Emma Lemaster, Kertz; Allie Green,
Chandlersville; and Malta Davis, city. Funeral services were held at
2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Third Street Free Will Baptist Church with
Rev. C.C. Hall as officiating minister. Burial was made in the Old Hood

Mrs.
Fannie Louise Hampton, 44, well-known fourth grade teacher of the
Paintsville City School, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lloyd
Preston, Second Street, Wednesday, April 1, at 4:30 p.m., after an
illness of three months. The daughter of James P. and Mary Wheeler
Butler, she was born December 13, 1914, at Staffordsville and had been
a lifelong resident of that community. She was married December
4, 1937, to Galus F. Hampton who survives. She was a member of the
First Church of God and was an active and loyal member, giving
generously of her time and talents in unselfish service to its
interests. She was a teacher in the Sunday School and for several years
she and her husband sang at revival services and were well known
throughout Johnson and surrounding counties. Her life was an
inspiration to others and many lives were touched and changed by her
example of Christian consecration. She attended Morehead State College
and was a teacher for twenty-four years, having taught in the county
schools for ten years and in the Paintsville Elementary School for
fourteen years. As a teacher she gave herself unsparingly to her
students and their interests. It was through her untiring efforst
in 1952 the Elementary Library was established an din recognition of
her contributions, the Paintsville P.T.A. and the Paintsville City
School Board recently placed a plaque with the inscription “Fannie L.
Hampton Elementary Library” over the entrance to the grade school
library. The large number of persons attending her funeral attested to
the love and esteem in which she was held. Surviving besides her
husband and sister are two other sisters, Mrs. Clyde Stevens and Mrs.
John Leake, both of Staffordsville, two brothers, Tom Butler of this
city and Lon Butler of Staffordsville. Funeral services were conducted
at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 4, from the Paintsville High School
Gymnasium with Robert J. Kitchen and Willard Wilcox as officiating
ministers. Music was by the Toms Creek Quartet. Pallbearers were
Oran Teater, Billy Lee Conley, Paul Trimble, Eugene Frazier, Robert
Auxier and Jim Chandler. Burial was in the Butler Cemetery at

Mrs.
Dora A. Hubbard, 74, died suddenly early Monday morning of a heart
attack at her home at Auxier. Mrs. Hubbard was born March 20, 1885, at
Blue Creek, W. Va., a daughter of the late George and Allie A. Price
Bickford. The family came to the White House section of Johnson
County where her father was accosiated with a mining concern in the
early days of the coal development. She had been a resident of
Auxier for the past 31 years, and was a member of the Christian
Church. Mrs. Hubbard was one of the most respected women of the
Auxier vicinity. Her husband, L. C. Hubbard, a well-known resident of
this section, died March 18, 1953. Surviving are six sons, Clifford H.
Hubbard, Cleveland, O.; Ted, John, Paul, and William Hubbard, all of
Auxier; Jack Hubbard, Ada, O.; and Charles Hubbard, Macon, Ga.
Also four daughters, Mrs. Charles Trivette, Lexington; Mrs. W. L.
Wells, Auxier, Mrs. J. E. Donovan, Cleveland, and Mrs. C. L. Kephart,
Hagerstown, Md. And the following brothers and sisters: Ora
Bickford, Thealka; Charles A. Bickford, Betsy Layne, Guy and Jay
Bickford, both of Mineral, Wash., Mrs. Floyd Castle, Virgie, Ky.; Mrs.
John Perry, Oak Hill, W. Va., and Mrs. Carl Jordan, Texas. Funeral
services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 16, by the Rev. S.
C. Honeycutt at the chapel of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home.

services for Mrs. Johnny Jerrick, 25, the former Claudine Van Hoose,
daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Claude Van Hoose of Fairborn, Ohio will be
held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at the Mouth of Rush Church. Mrs. Jerrick
died of leukemia about 8:30 this morning in Dayton, Ohio. She was
a former resident of this county. The body will be brought to the

April 22, in the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, of leukemia
following an illness of eight months. The daughter of Claude and
Florence Stambaugh Van Hoose, Fairborn, Ohio, she was born at Nippa May
18, 1933. She had lived in Dayton for the past six years and was
a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving besides her parents
are her husband, Johnnie Jurich; one sister, Mrs. Robert Minton,
Fairborn, Ohio; two brothers, Paul Van Hoose and Wilbur Van Hoose, both
of Fairborn, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m.,
Saturday, April 25, from the mouth of Rush Freewill Baptist church with
Millard Van Hoose and C. C. Hall as officiating ministers. Music
was by the Toms Creek Quartet. Burial was in the family cemetery

A. Lyon, 68, retired merchant of Louisa, and brother of Ross Lyon,
President of the First National Bank here, died Thursday in a Louisa
hospital following an illness of two and one-half years. Mr. Lyon owned
and operated a hardware store after moving from Keaton 40 years ago. He
was born at Keaton, Jan. 30, 1891, a son of the late Sanford and Mary
Skaggs Lyon. He had been a member of the Louisa Freewill Baptist Church
for 19 years. Survivors include his wife, Esta Gillern Lyon; one
daughter, Mrs. Charles Johns, Louisa; one son, Manuel R. Lyon, Louisa;
two sisters, Mrs. S.B. Ball, Jr., Ashland and Miss Opal Lyons, Louisa;
five brothers, Forest F., of Blaine, Roscoe of this city, Buell and
Jesse, boht of Louisa, and Robert Lyon, Orlando, Fla. Funeral services

sisters, Wilma Joyce and Wanda Loyce May, all at home, as well as her

McCoy, 60, resident of Auxier, died suddenly of a heart attack
Wednesday, April 29,. The fatal seizure occurred as Mrs. McCoy,
returning from a fishing trip, was walking down a lane leading to her
home from the highway. The daughter of the late James and Josephine
Marshall Burchett, she was born February 20, 1899, in Floyd county, and
had resided in the Auxier vicinity all of her life. She was a
member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, Leonard McCoy, preceded
her in death November 28, 1957. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs.
Edna L. McNealy, Akron, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Wells and Mrs.
Nett Goble, both of Auxier, two brothers, Robert and Frank Burchett,
Also of Auxier, one grandson. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00
p.m., Saturday, May 2, from the Auxier Methodist Church with Rev. S. C.

services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday from the First Methodist
Church for Marcus O. McGinnis, 63 resident of this city who died at
7:30 am Wednesday, April 15 1959 in a Middlesboro hospital following a
brief illness. Mr. McGinnus, a driller had made his home in Paintsville
since 1926. He was born January 10, 1896 in Pennsylvania, the son of
Mack and Adelle Thomas McGinnis. He was a member of th Methodist
Church. Surviving are his wife, Daisy Sedgwich McGinnis, four
daughters, Mrs. Gabe Takncs of this city, Mrs. A. J. Wright, Baltimore,
Md., Mrs. Joe Bass, Breman, Ga., Mrs. Robert Hayes, Forty Fort, Pa.,
four brothers, John McGinnis of Gallapolis, Ohio, Newell, Owen and
Zeldon McGinnis all of EauClair, Pa. Services were conducted by the
pastor, Rev. O. M. Zimmerman. Pallbearers were Vance Mills, O. O.
Roberts, Clarence Cooper, Edward Lemaster, Jr., Charlie Albrocht and
Charles M. Mckenzie. Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery in this city.

Held Sunday For McKenzie Infant Stevie Lyn McKenzie, 2-year-old son of
Paul and Mary Ruth Conley McKenzie of Flat Gap, died at 3:34
p.m., Thursday in a local hospital of pneumonia after a ten-day
illness. Surviving besides the parents is a brother, James Paul.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 Sunday, April 5, from the home
of his grandfather, John J. Conley at Flat Gap with Ellis
Hamilton and Cline Salyer as officiating ministers. Music
was by the Toms Creek Quartet. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Elizabeth Moles, 79, wife of Jeff Moles of this city, died Sunday,
April 26, in a local hospital after an extended illness. The
daughter of the late Edwin and Nancy Flannery Friend, she was born in
Carter County January 4, 1880. She has been a resident of this
city for the past eleven years. Survivors include besides her
husband a son, Francis Moles, Ashland and a sister, Mrs. Lewis Conley,
also of Ashland. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m.,
Tuesday, from the Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. C.E.

M. Preston, 73, well-known farmer and miner of Williamsport, died
Saturday, April 1, in a local hospital of a heart condition following
an illness of three weeks. He was a brother of Charles E. Preston
of this city. The son of Gerald Lafayette and Julia Pack Preston, he
was born April 6, 1886, at Williamsport and had lived in that community
most of his life. He was a member of the Toms Creek United
Baptist Church. His wife, Rosa Daniel Preston, preceded him in death
September 8, 1950. Surviving besides his brother are four sons, John
Mitchell Preston, Ypsilanti, Michigan; Roy Preston, Dayton, Ohio; Elmer
Preston, Williamsport; Hoy Preston, Barnetts Creek; one stepson,
William Austin of this city; two other brothers, L. T. Preston,
Thealka; I. D. Preston, Williamsport; one sister, Mahalia Daniel,
Williamsport. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday
from the Old Fellowship Church at Williamsport with F. F. Rigsby and
Nim Sturgill as officiating ministers. Burial was in the family

Eschel
Rice, prominent Oil Springs merchant, died unexpectedly at his home
April 4, at 8:30 a.m. Death was attributed to a bloodclot. Mr. Rice was
a life-long resident of the Oil Springs community, having been a
teacher in the Johnson county school system for a number of
years, and a merchant at Oil Springs for the past forty-seven years. He
was a member of the Barnetts Creek Baptist churc and Masonic Lodge of
Paintsville. He was born at Oil Springs January 29, 1890, an only child
of the late James F. Rice and Emily Prater Rice, who survives. Also
surviving are his wife Hazel and three children; Willie, Mary Grace and
James Douglas. Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday,
April 6 at 11:00 a.m., with the Revs. Lonza Reed, Scott Castle and
Millard O'Bryan officiating. Singing was by the Tom's Creek Quartet.
Burial was made in Rice family cemetery at Oil Springs under the

Robinson Dies Monday In Huntington
Homer
Robinson, 65, prominent resident of this city, died in St. Mary's
Hospital in Huntington, W. Va. at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 13 1959,
following a brief illness. The son of the late Martin and Pauline Wells
Pobinson, he was born in Logan W. Va., October 24 1893, he had resided
in Paintsville most of his life and for the past ten years had been
employed as a salesman by the Big Sandy Hardware Company. He was a
member of the Mayo Church. The unexpected and untimely passing of Homer
Robinson leaves an aching void, not only in the hearts of his family
and relatives, but in the entire community, which has lost a friend.
Homer was never too busy or to tired to help others who needed him. He
grew in stature as he bravely faced life, always going far beyond the
line of duty. His place in his church and community will be difficult
to fill, and his family will forever love and cherish his memory.
Survivors include two sons, Homer Preston Robinson, Inez; John Paul
Robinson, Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Allen, Inez;
three sisters, Mrs.Kenneth Miner, Albany, N. Y.; (unreadable sister of
Knoxville, Tenn); Mrs. Walter Lewis of this city. one brother, Bruce
Robinson, Tampa, Florida; two grandchildren. Funeral services were
conducted at 2:00 p.m., today from the Mayo Memorial Church with the
Rev. Charles Perry, pastor, and Rev. James H. Grayson of Inez
officiating. Pallbearers were Deward Kazee, Jack Vickers, William H.
Clay, Floyd Wallen, Oscar Wells, and Malcolm Shearer. Burial was in the

Lum
Salyer, 90 year old farmer of Flat Gap, died at the home of his son,
Chandler Salyer, at 4:10 p.m.; Sunday, April 12, following an illness
of eleven days. The son of the late Samuel and Ursley Evans Salyer, he
was born February 3, 1869, at Flat Gap and had been a lifelong resident
of that community. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. His
wife, Genetta Williams Salyer, preceded him in death February 20, 1943.
Surviving besides his son, Chandler, are two other sons, Ray Salyer and
Ralph Salyer, both of Flat Gap; four daughters, Mrs. Hollie Williams
and Mrs. Ellllrwin Conley; both of Flat Gap; Mrs. Conn Ross and Mrs.
Dola Willliams, both of Bell Center, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. G. W.
McKenzie, Rushsylvania, Ohio., 18 grandghildren and 23
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday, April 14, from the Bethel Church at Flat Gap with Timmie
Bailey, Lonza Reedf and Arthur Morris as officiating ministers. Burial

Hodley
Salyers, 63, well-known resident of Hager Hill, died in the Veterans
Hospital, Huntington, WVa., Tuesday, April 14, at 9:10 p.m., after an
illness of ten months. A resident of Hager Hill for the past fifteen
years, he was born at Flat Gap June 6, 1895, the son of Gardner and Lou
Anna Fairchild Salyers. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church
and a disabled veteran of World War 1. He was married in this city
September 19, 1919, to the former Maude Johnson, who survives. Also
surviving are three sons, Edgel Salyers, Dayton, Oh., Brooksie Salyers,
Columbus, Oh., Rev. J. Paul Salyers, Inez; two daughters, Mrs. G.R.
Witten, Cincinnati, Oh., Mrs. Heber Preston, Wittensville; two
brothers, Ben J. Salyers of this city, Sammie Salyers, West Van Lear;
four sisters, Mrs. Leo Daniel, Ashland, Mrs. Lon Hall, London, Oh.,
Mrs. Julia Caudill, Ashland, Mrs. Laura Williams, Flat Gap; five

Delilah Tackett, 80-year-old resident of Staffordsville, died in a
local hospital at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 24, following an illness of
several months. The daughter of the late John H. and Ellen Boggs
Osborne, she was born March 23, 1880, at Staffordsville and had been a
lifelong resident of that community. She was a member of the
Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death six years ago by her
husband, Sam Tackett. Survivors include three sons, Flem Tackett,
Springfield, Ohio; Ray Tackett of this city; Dennie Tackett,
Staffordsville; four daughters, Mrs. Homer McFaddin of this city; Mrs.
Bill Blair, West Van Lear; Mrs. Ray Kitchen, Springfield, Ohio; Mrs.

Mrs.
Murzie Stapleton Vaughn, 85, died Sunday April 25, 1959, in Colcato,
Minnesota, after a short Illness of a few months. Daughter of the late
Samuel and Jane Williams Stapleton natives of Johnson County, she was a
resident of Minnesota for approximately 50 years. She was a
member of the Methodist Church and lived a devoted Christian life. Mrs.
Vaughn was very active until her recent illness, having visited
Paintsville, Kentucky in October 1958. During her visit she was
the guest of an aunt, Mrs. W. H. McKenzie, and a niece, Mrs. Harry
Davis, both of this county. While she was here she visited
various other friends and relatives. Mrs. Vaughn was the daughter of
the late Sandy Vaughn, brother of Miss Maude Vaughn and the late Mrs.
Jennie Williams, both of Volga, KY. She is survived by three daughters
and two sisters, Mrs. Mayme Carey of Washington and Mrs. Christian
Gilmer of Minnesota. Funerals Services for Mrs. Vaughn were held in
Cokato, Minnesota, on Wednesday, April 23, 1959. Paintsville Herald
