Sam K. Arms, 91, died at 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, at his home at
Denver following a brief illness. The son of the late Elijah B. and
Martha Blair Arms, he was born in this county March 26, 1869, and had
resided at Denver for the past forty years. He was a member of
the Missionary Baptist Church and worked as a carpenter prior to his
retirement. He was preceded in death by his first wife Sarah Adams
Arms. His second wife, Mrs. Minnie Rivers Arms, survives. Also
surviving are five sons, Everett Arms, City; Beecher Arms, Baltimore,
Md.; Grady Arms, Columbus, Ohio; Raymond Arms, Denver; Ray Arms,
Leander; two daughters, Mrs. Emma Burke, West Van Lear; Mrs. Erie
Colvin, Denver; one sister, Mrs. Flora Conley, Portsmouth, Ohio;
thirty-three grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and nine
great-great- grandchildren. Funeral service were conducted 1:30 p.m.,
Friday, April 8, from the Denver Liberty Baptist Church with Rev.
Adrian Davis, Rev. Sam Sloan and Rev. E. H. Overman, officiating.
Music was by the Southside Free Will Baptist quartet. Burial was

AUXIER, Ricky Durane

Services Monday For Auxier Infant
Rickie Durane Auxier, 3-day-old son of Carson and Christine Kazee
Auxier of Manila, died in a local hospital at 2:30 p.m., Saturday,
April 23. Also surviving are four brothers, Tommie Lee, Philip, Joe,
and Kenneth, all at home; one sister, Carolyn Sue Auxier, at home.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., April 25 at the home of
her grandmother, Mrs. Lula Auxier, with Lonza Reed as the officiating
minister. Burial was in the Auxier Cemetery at Manila. Paintsville

BURKE, Henry
1877-1960
Auxier Resident Dies Friday
Henry Burke, 82, well-known resident of Auxier, died at his home Friday
evening, April 1, following an illness of fourteen years. The son of
the late Charles and Malvina Jones Burke, he was born at East Point
April 4, 1877, and had made his home at Auxier for the past fourteen
years. He was a member of the Louisa Church of Christ and prior to his
retirement was employed as a clerk. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nannie
Wilson Burke; three daughters, Mrs. Stella Bailes and Mrs. Maggie
Clark, both of California; Mrs. Herma Bailes, Chicago, Ill.; two
brothers, Grant Burke, Van Lear; Robert Burke, Cliff. Funeral services
were conducted Monday at 10:00 a.m., from the chapel of the Jones
and Preston Funeral Home with the Rev. S.C. Honeycutt as the
officiating minister. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery at Louisa.

BUTCHER, H.H.
1960
H.H.Butcher, 73, of Bypro, died at home April 6 of a lingering illness.
He was a native of Johnson County and was the father of former State
Representative Ann B. Hall, of Wheelwright. He was a retired miner. Mr.
Butcher was a son of Frank and Mary Perry Butcher and was married to
Martha Blankenship Butcher, who survives. Besides Mrs. Hall, surviving
sons and daughters are Willard Butcher, Sam Butcher, and Mrs. Goldie
Jones, all of Detroit, Mich., H.H. Butcher, Jr., and Mrs.Edna Johnson,
both of Columbus, Ohio, Jeff Butcher, Boons Camp, Kenneth
Butcher, Robert Butcher and Miss Georgette Butcher, Mrs.
Vonda Bates, and Mrs.June Hall, all of Bypro, Mrs. Bobby
Bates, Jellico, Tenn., and Mrs. Gypsy Brock, Plant City, Fla. Brothers
and sisters surviving are John Butcher and Mrs. Lucy Parker, both of
Morehead, George Butcher, Paintsville, Frank Butcher,
Leonard Butcher, Walter Butcher, Mrs. Amanda Gross,
Mrs. Nancy Caudill and Mrs. Mary Kalup, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Funeral rites were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9, from the
Wheelwright First Baptist Church, the Rev. John Lester officiating.
Burial was made in the Osborne cemetery at Bypro. Paintsville Herald

CLARK, James Matthew
1960
Nephew of Herald Printer Dies Monday; Victim of Burns
Edward C. Clark, printer in the Herald shop, left this morning for
Barboursville, W. Va. To attend the funeral of his 3-year-old nephew,
James Matthew Clark, who died Monday morning in St. Mary’s Hospital in
Huntington from burns. The child received burns on his body April 10
while playing with a companion. His clothes ignited from a trash
fire in the back yard of the Clark family. He is survived by his
parents and one sister, Phyllis Jean and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. today at the Merrits Creek
Methodist Church, and burial was made in the family cemetery at

Sarah Daniels,92,Of Tutor Key Dies April 6 Mrs.Sarah Daniel,92
life-long resident of Tutor Key,died at her home at 2:45
p.m.,Wednesday,April 6,after an illness of several months. She was born
July 4,1867,the daughter of the late S.M. and Polly Daniel
Cassady.Mrs.Daniel was a member of the United Baptist Church. She was
married in 1878 to James Daniel,who preceded her in death in
1948. Surviving are three sons,Irvin and Tive Daniel,both of Tutor
Key;Dave Daniel of this city;nine grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 10:30
a.m., Friday, April 8, with Lonza Reed,Florida Lyons and Virgil Daniel
as officiating ministers.Burial was in family cemetery. Paintsville

GIBSON, Nathaniel
1888-1960
Services Friday At Riceville For Nathaniel Gibson Nathaniel Gibson, 71,
retired farmer of Swamp Branch, died at his home at 8:10 a.m., Tuesday,
April 12, after a three months' illness. He was born in this county May
17, 1888, the son of Frank and Hallie Saylor Gibson and had been a
lifelong resident of the Swamp Branch community. He was a member of the
Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Caudil
Gibson; three sons, James F. Manuel and Lee Gibson, all of Swamp
Branch; five daughters, Verna Sexton, Fayettesville, W. Va., Teresa
Ivey, Oak Hill, W. Va.; Velva Jackson, Riceville; Ethel Decker, Salt
Lake City, Utah; Glada Hunnall, Swamp Branch; eight sisters and one
brother. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 Friday, April 15 at
the Riceville Freewill Baptist Church with Scott Castle as officiating

GOBLE, Alka (Crum)

Mrs. Alka C. Goble, 29, teacher in the Tomahawk Grade School, died in a
local hospital at 4:30 p.m., April 2, 1960, of a heart attack suffered
three hours earlier. The daughter of Lon and Rosetta Mills Crum, she
was born May 25, 1929, at Debord, and was a resident of Inez at the
time of her death. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband Wilburn Goble; a daughter, Shelia Kay, at
home; seven brothers, Clayton, Inez; Parker, Debord; Cyrus, Wayne,
W.Va. Jeptha and Ambrose Crum both of Akron Ohio, James H., California;
Clemon Crum, Oceana W. Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Rose Mary Blackburn and
Mrs. Bertha Mollett both of Debord; Mrs. Elgis Manard, Inez. Funeral
services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., April 4, 1960; from the First
Baptist Church with Rev. James Grayson officiating Burial was in the

JOHNSON, Mason
1874-1960
Mason Johnson, 86, lifelong resident of Collista, died at his home at
11:35 a.m., April 13, after a year's illness. The son of W. H. and
Arminta Sowards Johnson, he was born August 30, 1874, at
Collista. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. His
wife, Rhoda Fitzpatrick Johnson, preceded him in death November 7,
1953. Surviving are three sons, Grant, Ivan and L. A. Johnson, all of
Collista; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Little, Collista; Mrs. Bessie
Little, Melvin; Mrs. Carmalee Cantrell, Collista. Funeral services were
conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday from the Rock House Free Will Baptist
Church with Claude Preston and Charlie Lemaster as officiating
ministers. Music was by the Staffordsville Quartet. Burial

KEATON, Tom Jeff
1888-1960
Tom Jeff Keaton, 72, resident of Flat Gap, died suddenly Saturday,
April 9, at the home of Charlie Gamble at Blaine. The son of the late
Richard and Kallie Conley Keaton, he was born March 9, 1888 in Morgan
County and had resided most of his life at Flat Gap, where he engaged
in farming. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. Survivors
include four brothers, Johnnie Keaton, Ohio; Beddie, Paris and Andy
Keaton, all of Morehead. Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, April 12, at the New Salem Church with Robie Ferguson, Addie
Ferguson and Emery Ferguson as officiating ministers. Burial was in the

MCCLAFFERTY, Frank V.
1876-1960
Frank Vinson McClafferty, 84, a retired oil man, died at this home, 80
Boyd Street in this city Thursday, April 28, after an extended
illness. Mr. McLafferty, a native of Sharon Pennsylvania, was
born May 1, 1876, the son of the late John and Margaret Kane
McClafferty. When he was yet a young man he moved to Ritchie
County, West Virginia and became employed by the R. G. Gillespie Oil
Company. In 1925 he and his family moved to Paintsville when his
company transferred him to this section and made him superintendent of
their holdings in this area. Later he became employed by the
Cumberland Petroleum Company and remained with this company until his
retirement. Mr. McClafferty was engaged in the oil business over
fifty years and was considered an authority in his time of work.
His first wife, Anna Monts McClafferty, preceded him in death in
1943. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jane Hughes McClafferty;
two daughters, Virginia Fannin and Mary McClafferty; three
stepchildren, Mrs. Hubert Daniel, Mrs. Eugene Blair and Mrs. Charles
Hammond all of this city; four step grandchildren. Funeral
services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 30, from the
chapel of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Perry,
pastor of Mayo Methodist officiating. Pallbearers were employees
of Cumberland Petroleum Company. Burial was in the Wells Cemetery

MEADE, Teri (Webb)
1876-1960
Mrs.Tera Meade,83, well-known resident of this city,died at the home of
her daughter,Mrs.Protector Evans, Ashland, at 4:00 p.m., Saturday,
April 30, after an extended illness. The daughter of the late
Crate and Jane Reed Webb, she was born at Flat Gap July 24,1876. She ws
beloved and respected resident of this city where she had made her home
for the past thirty years. Mrs.Meade joined the Bethel United Baptist
Church at Flat Gap when she was twenty-two years old and was a
thoughtful and loyal worker in the church, devoting her life to the
religious and social betterment of her community.Being most able at
prayer she shone as a guiding influence to all around her and the
radiance of her life was an inspiration to those who knew her. She was
married at Flat Gap July 6,1895, to Dr.P.P Meade,who preceded her in
death November 20, 1929. Survivors include besides her daughter a son,
Dr.Walter W. Meade, Bricknell,Indiana;a sister,Mrs.W.H.Cox of this
city: four grandchildren, Walter W.Meade Jr.,Linton Parnell Meade,
Dr.Evalyn Georgene Evans and Dr.Paul W.Eans; one great-grandchild Sally
Jane Evans. Funerail servces were conducted at 2:00 p.m Tuesday from
the United Baptist Church in this city with Tommy Bailey, F.F. Rigsby,
and Lonza Reed as officiating ministers. Pallbearers were
WilburDaniels,Lawrence Daniels,Clifford Hughes, W.L Rigsby, McKinley
Baldwin, Jim Pelphrey and John L Spears. Burial was in the Mayo

PRESTON, Hazel (Butcher)
1907-1960
Mrs. Hazel Preston, 52, died at 1:55 a.m., April 21, in the Edward J.
Myers Hospital in Buffalo, N. Y., of cancer after an illness of five
months. The daughter of Mrs. Lura Deboard Butcher of Boons Camp and the
late Ballard Butcher, she was born at Boons Camp August 27, 1907, and
had lived in New York for the past year. Surviving are her husband, Jim
Preston; Orville Swain and James Preston, both of Wabash, Indiana; one
daughter, Mrs. Don Leach, Wabash, Indiana; four brothers, Allan
Butcher, Blair, W. Va.; Earl and Marcus L. and Willie Butcher, of Boons
Camp; three sisters, Mrs. Bill Mollett, Mrs. Millard Preston and Mrs.
Earl Preston, all of Boons Camp. Funeral services were conducted at
10:00 a.m., Monday, April 25, from the home of her mother at Boons Camp
with Fred Rowland as officiating minister. Burial was in the

PRICE, Gertrude (Fannin)
1904-1960
Mrs. Gertrude Fannin Price, 55, wife of Green Price of Thelma, died
Monday, April 25, after an extended illness. The daughter of William
Fannin and the late Mary Essa Butcher Fannin, she was born in this
county July 5, 1904, and had resided at Thelma most of her life.
She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Survivors also include
three sons, Cam Price, Amarillo, Tex.; Carl and Clifford Price, both of
Thelma; three daughters, Mrs. Neva Lee Franklin of this city; Mrs. Eula
Castle and Mrs. Essa Jean Fraley, both of Thelma; one brother, Ernest
Fannin, Thelma; one sister, Mrs. Neva Lee Fields, Beauty. Funeral
services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 28, from the
Thelma School with Nim Sturgill as officiating minister. Burial

TURNER, Charlie
1900-1960
Charlie Turner, 60, resident of Boons Camp, died in St. Mary's Hospital
in Huntington, W.Va., at 3:30 a.m., April 13, after an illness of eight
days. The son of Will and sarah Cheek Turner, he was born April 3,
1900, at Wheelersburg and had lived at Boons Camp for the past forty
years, where he worked as a farmer and miner. Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Mary Blevins Turner; two stepsons, Lewis Gamble, Tomahawk, and
Richard Gamble, Boons Camp; two brothers, Jim Turner and Henry Turner,
both of Washington Courthouse, Ohio; two sisters, Maudie Bolden, Oil
Springs; Kittie Trimble, Jeffersonville, Ohio. Funeral services were
conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 15, at his home with Fred
Rowland as officiating minister. Burial was in the Turner Cemetery at

VANHOOSE, Carol (Conley)

Mrs. Carol Sue Conley Van Hoose, 21, wife of Ernest Van Hoose of
Lowmansville, died in a local hospital at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April
20, following an illness of three days. The daughter of Charley and
Beulah Brown Conley, she was born February 28, 1939, in Lawrence County
and had resided most of her life at Lowmansville where she was a
member of the Enterprise Church. Other survivors include a son, James
Ernest, age two years; one sister, Connie Conley, Lowmansville. Funeral
services were conducted at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 23, from the
Lowmansville Enterprise Baptist Church with Ellis Hamilton and Bird
Webb as officiating ministers. Music was by the Lowmansville
Quartet. Burial was in the Borders Cemetery at Lowmansville.
