Funeral Services Today for Ella Davis Hall 91-year old Mother of
Prominent Family, Wife of Educator, was Former Teacher Mrs. Ella Davis
Hall, 91, the last of 12 children of a pioneer family of Johnson
County, died at her home near the Country Club on Davis Branch at 10:45
a.m. Monday, April 17. Mrs. Hall had been ill for a number of
weeks. She suffered a heart attack in early December from which
she never recovered, though she showed signs of improvement on numerous
occasions and maintained her intellect to the very last. She was the
wife of the late Judge J. Melvin Hall, well known educator and civic
leader, who preceded her in death September 21, 1951. Their
descendants are each successful in their fields of endeavor and
representative of the ideals of this respected couple who spent their
entire lives in their community. Many persons, some national
figures, enjoyed their acquaintance and friendship. Mrs. Hall was the
daughter of James McHenry and Naomi Price Davis, faithful and prominent
members of the United Baptist Church in which she too was a
member. Her father lived to be 88 and her grandfather, Elias
Davis of the Fishtrap Church area on Big Paint Creek, also lived to the
ripe age of 89. She was for thirteen years a teacher in the public
schools of Johnson County. She was a woman of strong Christian
character, patient, loving, self-sacrificing, and very devoted to
her family. Life will never be quite the same to those who knew
Mrs. Hall. Her life was gentle, but like the still waters it was
deep. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Nelson Gullet, city, and five
sons: Dr. Paul B. Hall and Reverend C. C. Hall, city. Dr. Lloyd
M. Hall, Salyersville; C. Mitchel Hall, P. E., Washington, D.C. and Dr.

Herald Wednesday April 19, 1961 OBITUARY Ella Davis Hall Ella Davis
Hall was born, January 10, 1870, and passed into the Great Beyond April
17, being 91 years, 3 months, and 7 days. She was the last of twelve
children born to James McHenry and Naomi Price Davis. Her
husband, Judge J. Melvin Hall, preceded her in death in 1951. To mourn
her passing she leaves one daughter, Mrs. Nelson Gullett and the
following sons; Dr. Paul B. Hall, Paintsville, C. Mitchel Hall,
Washington, D. C., Dr. Lloyd M. Hall, Salyersville, Rev. C. C. Hall,
Paintsville, and Dr. Lon C. Hall, now of Boston, Mass. Also, 13
grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive. More than 70 years
ago she confessed a hope in Christ and her Christian Spirit has shown
out as a light of a city built on a hill – on her death bed she said
she was going “home”. What more consolation could be given her
family and friends. Everyone will miss her, but not one will
forget her. The angels in Heaven are waiting to give her the same
reception that she gave others. Life will mourn her the same, for her
family will long for mother’s counsel and advice. Her life
was gentle, but like the still waters, it was deep. All the care and
love that could be given for her comfort were always brought at first
hand. Peace and happiness in her home were a joy to her and her
family. The following grandsons acted as pallbearers; Dr. Maurice
M. Hall, James E. Hall, Dr. John Melvin Hall, Paul Ronald Hall, Bryan
Davis Hall, and William Mitchel Hall. “We will weep for the days that
some no more. For the sunbeam gone from the heart and door; For a
missing step, for a nameless grace, For a mother’s form, for a mother’s
face; But not for the soul whose crown is won, Whose infinite joy has
only begun; Not for the spirit enrobed in light, Crowned where the
angels are. Paintsville Herald Wednesday April 26, 1961
