BAYES, Charlie
1964
Charlie Bayes, 77, retired farmer passed away April 24, at 3:00 p.m.
after a brief illness following a heart attack. Mr. Hayes, born in
Johnson County, the son of Jim Jack and Katherine Fairchild Bayes, was
a resident of Oil Springs throughout his life time. Besides his wife,
Charlotte (Vencil) Bayes, Mr. Bayes is survived by four sons, Ted Bayes
of Staffordsville, Herschell Bayes of Wittensville, Wendell Bayes of
Oil Springs, and Herald Bayes of Gratis, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs.
Geneva Williams, four sisters, Mrs. Mintie Long, Fairborn, Ohio; Mrs.
Dewey Conley, Derby, Ohio; Mrs. Sina Fairchild, Oil Springs; and Mrs.
Julie Salyer, Flat Gap; four brothers, Mark Bayes, Paintsville, Prentis
Bayes, Oil Springs; Dard Bayes, Mt. Sterline, Ohio; Moody Bayes,
Catlettsburg, Kentucky; and John Bayes, Derbyville, Ohio. Funeral
services were held Sunday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel of
the Paintsville Funeral Home, with Reverend Bruce Daniels
officiating. Internment was in the family cemetery, Oil Springs.

Bob Blair, 55, died his home in Williamsport, Ohio, at 2:30 am, Sunday,
April 28. He was the son of Frank and Anna Pickle Blair. Survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Daisy O’Bryan Blair; four daughters, Mrs. Floyd
Williams, Jr. Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Ochel Burchett, Stambaugh; Audrey
and Lorraine both at home; five sons, Bobby Joe, Mt. Sterling; Millard
Frank, Flem Wiley, Buddy Eugene and William Hobart Blair all at home
four sisters, Mrs. Dessie Blair, Wheelersburg, Ohio; Mrs. Margaret
Blair, Barnetts Creek; Mrs. Bertha Pickle, Findley, Ohio; Mrs. Delphia
Harman, Springfield, Ohio; two brothers Buell Blair, Barnetts Creek;
Martin Blair of this city. Funeral services were held at a Mt. Sterling
Church with Zollie King, Frank Arms, and Prater Blair
officiating. Burial was in a Mt. Sterling Cemetery. He was the

BLAIR, Lizzie (Hitchcock)
1896-1964
Mrs. Lizzie Blair, 67, died suddenly at her home at West Van Lear at
2:30 p.m., Thursday, April 16. A daughter of the late Milt and Celia
Rice Hitchcock, she was born in Johnson County September 18,
1896. She had made her home at West Van Lear for the past several
years and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Her husband,
Alonzo Blair, preceded her in death July 31, 1955. Survivors include
three step-sons, James Blair, Holden, W. Va.; Rudolph Blair,
Springfield, Ohio; Don Blair, Baltimore, Maryland, A stepdaughter, Mrs.
Lucy Combs, West Van Lear; a brother, Walter Hitchcock, Ashland, Mrs.
Ed Fairchilds, Staffordsville. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00
p.m., Saturday in the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home with
John G. Sammons as officiating minister. Burial was in the Cumbo

BLANTON, Leroy
1929-1964
Leroy Blanton, 34, was killed at 4:00 a.m., Friday, April 10, when he
was struck by a trailer-truck while walking on an intersection of U.S.
Highway 30 and 13 at Pierceton, Indiana. A son of the late Arch
and Thana Blanton, he was born at Oil Springs August 14, 1929, and had
lived in Pierceton for seven months. Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Beulah Marie Conley; two sons, Charles Ray, age 3 years, and Jimmy
Franklin, age 9 months; three brothers, James C. Blanton, Ashland; Gale
F. Blanton, Ashtabula, Ohio; Glen Blanton, Warsaw, Indiana; three
sisters, Mrs. Arthur Ratliff, Springfield, Ohio; Mrs. Carl McGinnie
Billingham, Washington; Mrs. Pearl Spicer, Hamilton, Ohio.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday in the chapel of
the Paintsville Funeral Home with Cline Salyer as officiating minister.
Burial was in the family cemetery at Oil Springs.

BUTCHER, Melvin
1892-1964
Melvin Butcher, 71, resident of Van Lear, died suddenly in a Pikeville
hospital at 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, April 8. A native of Johnson County,
he was born April 30, 1892, a son of the late Simon and Clarinda Webb
Butcher. He had been a lifelong resident of Van Lear. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Ida Bowling Butcher; eight sons, Ira, Elmer, Arnold,
Granville and Everett Butcher all of Van Lear; Hubert Butcher,
Wittensville; Allan and Bernard Butcher, Wabash, Ind.; three daughters,
Mrs. Maggie Moore and Mrs. Virginia Triplett both of Wabash, Ind.; Miss
Mimmie Butcher, Van Lear; two brothers, T.H. Butcher, Van Lear; Willie
Butcher of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Jude Banks and Mrs. Maggie
Music both of Van Lear. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m.,
Friday at the Upper Millers Creek School with Elzie Banks and John Crum
as officiating ministers. Burial was in the family cemetery.

CANTRELL Sarah Margaret (Nichols)
1882-1964
Mrs. Sarah Margaret Cantrell, 83, resident of Wheelersburg, died in a
local hospital at 7:30 pm, Friday, April 10, after an illness of ten
days. A daughter of the late John and Julia Welch Nichols, she was born
in Elliott County January 27, 1882 and had resided at Wheelersburg most
of her life. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of
Christ. She was preceded in death September 7, 1942, by her husband,
John Clinton Cantrell. Surviving are two sons, Ivan and French Cantrell
both of Salyersville; four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Wheeler and Mrs. Ruie
Williams of Wheelersburg; Mrs. Maxie Gannon, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs.
Mildred Prater, Detroit, Michigan; two sisters, Dulsie Williams,
Albany, Ohio; Eliza Nichols, Russell. Funeral services were conducted
at 10:30 am, Monday April 13, at the Flat Ford Freewill Baptist Church
with Cline Salyer as officiating minister. Burial was in the

CASTLE, Troy
1891-1964
Troy (Traw) Castle, 72, retired miner of Nippa, died at his home at
12:46 a.m., Wednesday, April 8, from the effects of a stroke suffered
seven days earlier. Mr. Castle, a son of William and Betts Daniel
Castle, was born October 8, 1891, at Tutor Key and had lived at Nippa
for twenty-seven years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Laura McClure
Castle, whom he married at Louisa September 20, 1920; three sons, Arlie
Castle, Columbus, Ohio; Paul B. Castle, Nippa; Odis Castle,
Williamsburg, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Ollie Mae Adams, Cincinnati,
Ohio; Mrs. Marsha Meade, Oil Springs; a brother, Lindsey (Cap) Castle,
Barnetts Creek; a sister, Martha Castle, Nippa. Also surviving
are twenty-three grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren. Funeral
services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday at the Tutor Key United
Baptist Church with Foster Grim, Virgil Howard and Florida Lyons

CONLEY, Hobart G.
1964
Hobart G. Conley, retired postal employee and former resident of this
city, passed away at his home, 134 Junefield Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio,
Sunday evening, April 12. Mr. Conley was a son of the late John Milton
and Mary Woods Conley. For several years prior to his leaving
Paintsville, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church and
was also a member of Paintsville Lodge No. 381 F and AM. While a
resident of this city he served as assistant postmaster. Survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Ethel Preston Conley; two sons, Gary Conley,
Sioux City, Iowa; Tom Max Conley, Cincinnati, Ohio; five brothers,
Harry Conley, Bloomfield; Forrest Conley, Clearwater, Fla.; W.E. (Deak)
Conley, Allegan, Michigan; Ralph and Everett Conley both of
Staffordsville; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Picklesimer, Volga; Mrs.
Lillie Dixon, Paintsville; Mrs. Ivel Daniel, Dural, Australia.
Also surviving are three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at the Paul R. Young Funeral Home, Mt.
Healthy, Ohio, Thursday, April 16, with the Rev. Harry Wainscott
officiating. Interment was in Arlington Memorial Gardens in Mt.

CONLEY, Walton L.
1964
Walton L. Conley, 63, Native of County Dies Suddenly Walton L. Conley,
63, died suddenly with a heart attack Wednesday, April 29, at his home
in Logan, West Virginia. Mr. Conley, son of the late Attorney B. H.
Conley and Celia Cooper Conley, of this city, had spent the past thirty
years in Logan, where he had been associated with his brother, Othie B.
Conley, as owners and operators of an electrical shop in that city.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bacon R. Moore, Harrodsburg,
Kentucky, and one brother, Othie B. Conley, Logan, W. Va. A
brother, A. H. Conley, preceded him in death. He also had many
relatives in this county to mourn his passing. Funeral services were
conducted Friday, May 1, at the Harris Funeral Home, with burial in the

FARMER, Willie L.
1896-1964
Mrs. Willie L. Farmer, 67, resident of Van Lear, died in Memorial
Hospital in Pikeville at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, after an
extended illness. A daughter of the late Scott and Clara Miller Martin,
she was born November 6, 1896, in Lawrence County and had lived at Van
Lear for the past forty-five years. She was a member of the Van Lear
Freewill Baptist Church. She was married July 4, 1924, in this city to
Elic Farmer, who survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs.
Ethel Daniel, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Nora Nicholson, New Carlisle, Ohio.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday at the Van Lear
Freewill Baptist Church with Edgar Hewlett and Ellis Hamilton as

JAYNE, Minnie (Bunyard)
1874-1964
Mrs. Minnie Jayne, former resident of this county, and mother of Mrs.
V. S. Williams of this city passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs.
Cyrus VanHoose in Tulsa, Oklahoma, April 23. Death was attributed
to a recent fall. Mrs. Jayne, daughter of John and Lydia Bunyard of
this county, was born March 19, 1874. She was the last member of
this family. She was the widow of the late W. H. Jayne, prominent
merchant of near Flat Gap, Kentucky where they lived for a number of
years. She was member of the Baptist Church and a devoted Christian,
Mother, and neighbor. Besides Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Van Hoose, she is
survived by the following children; Mrs. S. B. Reynolds, Ashland, KY.,
Ora C. Jayne, Albuquerque, New México, Charlie Jayne, Franklin
Furnace, Ohio; two step-children, Sam Jayne of Salt Lake City, Utah and
Mrs. Lum Brown of this city who preceded her in death. Funeral services
were conducted, Monday, April 27. Interment in the Garden of the
Apostles Cemetery in Tulsa. Mrs. Jayne has many friends in this

Alton Litteral, Former Resident, Dies in Tampa Alton B. Litteral, 59,
retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, died in McDill Air Base Hospital,
Tampa, Florida, Thursday morning, April 30, of a heart attack following
a two weeks' illness. A son of John H. and Pearlie Whitt Litteral, he
was born in Magoffin County August 31, 1904, and formerly resided in
this city. He had lived in Florida for the past four years and
was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs.
Ruth Daniel Litteral; a stepson, Don Daniel of this city; a
stepdaughter, Mrs. Ishmael Grim of this city; a brother, William
Litteral, Fowlerville, Michigan; three sisters, Mrs. G. E. Lowrey,
Charleston, W. Va.; Mrs. Roy Gerlach, Wheelersburg, Ohio; Mrs. Fannie

MCKENZIE, M. O.
1873-1964
M. O. McKenzie, 91, retired farmer and school teacher, passed away at 6
a.m., Friday, April 24, at a local hospital after three months'
illness. Mr. McKenzie, son of the late John and Serviller Seagraves
McKenzie was born April 7, 1873, and spent his entire life in Johnson
County. His wife, the late Clista Green McKenzie, preceded him in
death in October 1914. Survivors include two sons, Ray McKenzie of
Ashland, and Nelson McKenzie of Flat Gap, four grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m.,
Sunday, April 26, at the Flat Gap Enterprise Baptist Church, with Rev.
Bruce Daniels and Reverend Ellis Hamilton officiating, with burial in
the family cemetery at Flat Gap. Pall bearers were Paul McKenzie,
Nelson Hamilton, Tive Lyons, Con Lyons, Kerlin Lyons and W. H.

PATRICK, Jewell (Litteral)
1892-1964
Mrs. Jewell Patrick, 70, a retired school teacher widely known
throughout the county, died of a heart attack Friday, April 3, at the
home of a grandson, Sam Griffith, Turner Branch. A daughter of the late
Henry Harrison and Mary Elizabeth Moore Litteral, she was born in this
county September 25, 1892, and had lived at Riceville most of her life.
She had been residing with her grandson for the past six months.
A teacher in the Johnson County School system for many years, she
received her A. B. degree form Morehead State College in 1958. Her
husband, Sam M. Patrick, preceded her in death August 10, 1953.
Survivors also include a son, Samuel Harry Payne Patrick, Columbus,
Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Billie M. Johnson and Mrs. Mary A. Edwards
both of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Dallas Litteral, Millersburg, Ohio;
three sisters, Mrs. Rice May, New Port Richey, Florida; Myrtle
Litteral, Shreve, Ohio; Mrs. Hazel Calvert, Atlanta, Ga. Also surviving
are eight grandchildren adn three great-grandchildren. Funeral services
were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday at the Third Street Freewill
Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Castle and Charles Stapleton officiating
ministers. Music was by the Toms Creek Singers. Burial was in the

PHIPPS, Ashford
1882-1964
Ashford Phipps, 82, former resident of Southside, died at his home in
Beaver, Ohio, Sunday morning, April 12, after an extended illness. A
native of Magoffin County, he was born February 18, 1882. After
moving to this city he was employed as a carpenter and worked for the
Paintsville Packing Company. He became affiliated with the Rockhouse
United Baptist Church in 1911, and remained throughout the years a
devoted and faithful member. He moved to Beaver about twenty
years ago, and his membership for the past few years was with the
Beaver Valley United Baptist Church. He was married in 1902 to the
former Betty Tackett, who survives. Other survivors include five
sons, John Phipps, Clearwater, Florida; Ron, Sammie and Luster Phipps,
Willington, California; five daughters, Mrs. Nettie Rigsby, Jackson,
Ohio; Mrs. Mary Conley, Russell; Mrs. Martha Mast, Cincinnati, Ohio;
Mrs. Floria Dozer, Miami, Florida; Mrs. Nancy Davis, Upper Heyferd,
England; two half brothers, Albert Phonix, New Boston, Ohio; Wirtu
Phonix, Lucasville, Ohio; a half sister, Mrs. Mary Tackett,
Chillicothe, Ohio. Also surviving are thirty-seven grandchildren
and thirty-five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted
April 14 at the Beaver Valley Church with Elders F. F. Rigsby, Charles

PHIPPS, Delphia (Rigsby)
1906-1964
Mrs. Delphia Phipps, 58, of Clearwater, Florida, died at 11:30 p.m.,
April 20, at the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Betty Phipps of
Jackson, after suffering a heart attack. She had arrived here a
week ago to attend funeral services for her father- in-law, Ashford
Phipps. Born in Magoffin County, March 29, 1906, she was the daughter
of Sanford and Frances Montgomery Rigsby. She joined the United
Baptist Church of Paintsville, in the year 1934. She was a
faithful member until her death. She had many friends and was
loved by everyone who knew her. She was united in marriage to John
Phipps in the year 1924. To this union were born 8 children, 7
living and one deceased. Surviving are her husband, John Phipps, six
sons, Woody, Thomas, Billy and Gary all of Clearwater, Florida; Melvin
and John Jr., of Ashland; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Coolin of Ashland;
three brothers, Floyd of Jackson, Lundy of Waverly, Ohio and Hayden of
Peebles?; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Howard of Waverly, Ohio; and Mrs.
Ona Montgomery of Beaver. Also surviving are eleven
grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at Beaver Valley United
Baptist Church on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., with Elders, F. F. Rigsby,
Charles Roark and Harlan Montgomery officiating. Burial was in

PICKLESIMER, Martha Lynn (Stone)
1964
Mrs. Frank Picklesimer, 34, wife of Frank M. Picklesimer, Jr., of 1107
Winchester Road, Lexington, died at Good Samaritan Hospital at 11:30 P.
M. Sunday after a short illness. Mrs. Picklesimer, a native of Ohio had
lived in Lexington for the past 20 years. The former Martha Lynn Stone,
she was a daughter of Mrs. Maude Bradley Stone and the late Harrison
Stone. She was the daughter-in-law of Dr. and Mrs. F. M. Picklesimer,
Sr., of this city. In addition to her mother and husband, survivors
include two sons, Frank Picklesimer, III and Bradley Harrison
Picklesimer; two daughters, Stephanie Stone Picklesimer and Elizabeth
Ann Picklesimer, all of Lexington, and four sisters, Mrs. David Phelps
III, Mrs. Robert Shearer, Mrs. Ann Meyers, all of Lexington and Mrs.
Dalton Caldwell, Miami Shores, Fla. The body was taken to Whitehall
Funeral Chapel, where services will be conducted by the Rev. Bob W.
Brown at 2 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.

PRESTON, Frank M.
1964
Frank M. Preston, 89, well known retired farmer and miner of Tutor Key,
died in a local hospital at 12:05 a.m., Sunday, April 5, after an
illness of several months. A lifelong resident of Tutor Key, he was
born in this county a son of the late Charlie and Alsie Daniel
Preston. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war and a
member of the United Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Julia Daniel Preston. Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Bert Van Hoose, Tutor Key; a grandson, L. O. Van Hoose,
Cincinnati, Ohio; a granddaughter, Mrs. Franklin P. Conley of this
city; one great-grandson and three great-granddaughters. Funeral
services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday in the chapel of the
Paintsville Funeral Home with O. I. Williams and Charles Saunders as
officiating ministers. Member of the choir of First Christian Church
furnished the music. Burial was in the family cemetery.

1897-1964
Mrs. Georgia Price, 67, resident of River, died in a local hosptial at
9:00 p.m., Friday, April 17. A lifelong resident of River, she was born
in this county February 20, 1897, a daughter of Mose and Alice George
Boyd. She is survived by her husband, Kent Price, three sons, James
Price, Sitka; Mose Price, Itmann, West Virginia; and Billy Joe Price,
River; four daughters, Marietta Borders, Auxvasse, Missouri; Eula
Parsons, Tampa, Florida; Louella Price, Mullens, West Virginia; and
Alice Mae Ashby, Washington, D.C.; one brother, Joe Boyd, Thealka; and
one sister, Lula Fitch, Gallipolis, Ohio; two half brothers, Charlie
and Frank Blessing, Patrick. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren
and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10:00
a.m., Monday, at River, with Cullie Hager officiating. Burial was

THACKER, Gayle
1964
Funeral Thursday for Grandson of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Walters Gayle
Thacker, 16, son of Curt and Georgia Mary Walters Thacker of Louisa was
killed in a motorcycle accident about 5:45 p.m. Monday. The
accident occurred on Route 32 near Louisa when the youth’s motorcycle
is reported to have skidded and wrecked. He was thrown to the
highway and was run over by an oncoming automobile. He was traveling
with three companions at the time of the accident. He did not regain
consciousness and died shortly afterward of head injuries. The youth
had resided with his family in Paintsville for several years and was
the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Walters of this city.
Surviving besides his parents, is a brother, Joel, 11. Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist
Church in Louisa. The body is at the Young Funeral Home. Burial will be
made in Greenbrier Cemetery in Louisa. Paintsville Herald Thursday

WALTERS, Mary (Mollette)
1874-1964
Mary Walters Rites Sunday At Flat Gap Mrs. Mary Mollette Walters, 89,
died at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, April 30, at the Castle Fork Rest Home
after an illness of two years. Born at Boons Camp on July 25, 1874, she
was the daughter of the late James H. and Jane Wells Mollette.
She had lived at Offutt for the past few years and was affiliated with
the United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
(unreadable), September 13, 1963. Survivors include an adopted son,
Jack Davis, City; a foster daughter, Della Fairchild, Ashland.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were
conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, at the Old Bethel United Baptist
Church at Flat Gap with Cully Sparks, Foster Rigsby and Bud Wiley
officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery, Flat Gap.
